My dark skin ladies not all treatments work for our skin. We are not one size fits all not even between the same color skin because we are bio individuals. Hydroquinone once stop the spots will come back with a vengeance. Cassandra knows her science but each one of us knows that the real proof of these outcomes is our own experience even when using products the “correct” way. Tretinoin can cause dry eyes too. All based on my own experience with products. Sooo, please be aware of side effects and do your own research. Once again we are not one size fits all. We need to figure out what is best for each one of us as individuals.
Yes i used both products (listed in description haven't watched vid yet) and neither worked for me. Chinese skin. Am finding salicylic acid w aloe for healing seems to be fading a melasma patch. Plus an AHA toner at night. I discovered not washing face for one night (yes had makeup on !) Made it peel off much quicker.. ie dried it I think.
This video was so well organised and succinct, you really have a gift with your communication skills, the way you package and categorise each concept, and deliver it without the use of jargon or any fluff is so refreshing and appreciated. Sometimes when I see videos almost hitting the 20min mark it completely puts me off watching because there is usually so much rambling that it really jumbles up the learning/takeaway points of the video, but never with your videos, they are so jam packed full of information that if you lose focus for a second you’ve missed something important. Thank you so much for what you do, Merry Christmas and happiness always 🎄💕
I was checking on other UA-cam skin care tips, care & explains products uses & efficiency. I love how you go over everything thoroughly & ur easy to listen to. Ty for sharing! Love ur content 😊
Please tell me if you sang a specific melody to this! Hyperpigmentaion can be brow, it can be blue, it could be violet in the face. It could be purple it could be hurtful it can do whatever it likes!
Cassandra, I've been watching your channel since you started and you truly are something special. Your contribution to the world not only with knowledge, but also zeal and kindness is unparalleled. Thank you for existing ❤
Excellent information. I’m especially glad that you spoke to people that should not treat something that isn’t just hyperpigmentation, it’s related to something like diabetes. Cassandra shows such true medical professionalism, not just going for the cash grab views. Love your content, you’ve truly helped improve my skin!
While I agree with everything In this video. I was actually shocked to discover that lavender oil faded my hyperpigmentation QUICKLY. Within a few weeks it was gone!
That's crazy and interesting. Was it an 'essential' oil, or just a 'regular' (not essential)? I have hyperpigmentation too, and have been using a vitamin c serum off and on. Also, alpha Burtin? Or butrin? Its from the ordinary. Has been ok I guess. I can't really notice it too much, as I live in a very sunny place, so aside from me using sunscreen, I do get a lot of sun I feel, which might change the results of just using regular products that target that without any other factors
Because of this video, I switched my discontinued Curology account to Agency and have been using my Dark Spot Formula and Future Formula for about two weeks. Interesting that I’ve been using Tretinoin 0.05 for six months on a regular basis, but this last week a retinal rash has developed and I’ve had some flaking. I just rewatched this video and your other on retinal rashes…thank you for providing succinct and informative videos that we can trust.
Thank you so much for talking about hypopigmentation. It seems like no one talks about it on any other channel. I have mild hypopigmentation from my eczema but because I'm so obsessed with taking very good care of my skin that most people cannot see it.
I'd love to know more about the skin structures and cells involved in dark spots.❤ My dermacologist said we need to treat deeper layers of the skin to treat my dark spots, so harsh peels would only work in the short term. She mentioned those cells that make melanine, but hadn't time to tell me much, just that sometimes they get so dammaged the creat something around them. 😮
It's true, I'm using tretinoin (Retin A) right now and it's amazing how my hyperpigmentation is going away. I've only been using it for 2 weeks now. I love this stuff!
Thank you. But I prefer receiving this kind of info from a very melinated person to speak to all of our beautiful and milllions of skin hues starting with Milk chocolate complexions and darker. Our skin tones are so much more than light skin or dark skin. Thanks. Respectfully!
Thank you for this! I also really love how youre teaching us exactly how they work and whats best specifically for my skin as well as recommending some products on the way! Im so glad i found you!! Ive been struggling with hyperpigmentation lately
I’ve tried everything. That Topicals Faded cream didn’t do anything for me….Didn’t even fade my hyperpigmentation a little bit. The combo that completely cleared my large hyperpigmentation on my cheeks is The Ordinary Lactic Acid, The Ordinary Salicylic acid, an AHA/BHA toner of any brand, and Tretinoin. I did this every night and morning, and my hyperpigmentation cleared in 4 months. Oh….and using sunscreen every single day
That's bc you had melasma. 🤦🏾♀️ Ppl aren't listening. She said certain ingredients that work for acne scarring /sun spots WON'T WORK on melasma. Glad you found what works for you but others here under your comment need to know that all hyperpigmentation isn't created equal and what worked for you may not work for them. However, if any of you DO have melasma, use the thinnest product first. Then let it dry completely before applying the tretinoin. Tretinoin drying you out? Sandwich it... I.e. Apply lotion first, let dry completely, then apply tretinoin, let dry. Then lastly apply another layer of lotion.

I use Agency tretinoin and hydroquinone. It really is effective. Both the Future Formula and Dark Spot formula are excellent. I cannot use any vitamin C with these because my skin becomes sensitive, and that is counterproductive to my skincare goals. I use EltaMD UV Physical Tinted sunscreen and found it has been very helpful in reducing my melasma.
I love Agency! I have been using it for just over a year. Both the Future Formula and Dark Spot Formula. I get melasma on my cheeks and forehead and it has helped so much. I also use Timeless Skin Care’s 20% vitamin C + E Ferulic acid. Sunscreen is EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46.
I appreciate this video. I'm an Advanced Licensed Skin Care Specialist and Medspa Instructor so I seek out this type of information. Your skin looks great!!!
Brands that cost a fortune...often work better than affordable ones. Unfortunately...most of us cannot afford to spend 100 dollars on a one month supply of pigmentation serum. I appreciate Cassandra showing less expensive options. I have mature damaged skin and need serious formulas that I can afford. I use a lot of products. I have also incorporated a couple of home remedies containing Tumeric which is long known to help with pigmentation. I also use the Ordinary Vit C cream and Azelaic Acid, which is affordable and helpful...but does not offer awe-inspiring results. If I was rich, I would have procedures and spend hundreds of dollars on beauty products that truly work. I am grateful for The Ordinary and DECIEM which both offer affordable options for those who are NOT wealthy. There are products that I also splurge on...but by "splurge" I'm referring to 50 bucks MAX for one product.
Cassandra, I truly appreciate how much effort you put into your content, how you break information down and how caring and considered you are with your words 🫶🤍✨️ you're like a dose of the red pill for the fallacies of social media and the media industries in general 💥
Olive green skin over here. I get hyperpigmentation BAD. I have tried a lot of products. I have not gone to a dermatologist, insurance would not pay for it. The number one product that WORKS for me is differin gel with adapolene!!! I am in my mid 40's and never had acne until I started the premenopause. Then 2 years of cystic acne, my face literally hurt. I cleared it up and tried and tried different products until differin gel with adapolene ❤. Pimple patches help me because ... Sometime I pick .
ive been using faded topicals for more than a year now. When i was running low and ready to purchase it again, I just realized that I don't need it anymore. It works!!! of course use your spf
Amazes me that in the UK you can't seem to see a dermatologist without going through a doctor referral. I have skin issues and I have no idea what they are yet I can't see a dermatologist without paying £150 just for a consultation and having to go over 100 miles to London
I have dark skin and what I learned today is that we prevent, treat and stop hyperpigmentation. I never thought of stopping the process and didn't realize some products or ingredients could do that. I know each of us is unique and products and ingredients bear different results but going forward I now know how to research and buy the items I need to resolve my skin problems. I was trying different things and different routines and always forgot what gave me good results but now I know what to look for so, thanks.
Besides Cassandra's product reviews, Dr Vanita Rattan's (UK-based) unsponsored UA-cam page is my other go-to for the basics of dark skin care and her unsponsored INKY-list based review of products suitable for dark sin. There are a few other US-based dermatologists, but most are sponsored, as are many bloggers/influencers.
No 1 thing I stay away is hydroquinone. According to dr. Karam a cosmetic surgeon on UA-cam, he said using it too long , it can cause rebound. That just confirms why I don’t use that!
That's just misinformation. If you use something and stop using it without further preventative measures, obviously the same thing will happen again. Otherwise, there is no actual evidence of hydroquinone CAUSING a rebound.
Agency's dark spot formula worked great on a large sun spot on my cheek. It did nothing for melasma on my jawline. I was abandoned by one personal dermatologist assigned to my care and given another. Between the both of them they did not listen to my concerns and I felt they couldn't care less. I have since canceled my subscription with Agency because of this.
QUESTION: I am currently using the mandelic acid + HA from the ordinary for hyperpigmentation. I use it about 3 days a week. Would this be a good pair with something like the ordinary Ascorbic acid + alpha Arbutin? I don’t want to create too much irritation 😭
I used The Ordinary Lactic acid, The Ordinary Salicylic acid, and CosRx AHA/BHA toner every day and my hyperpigmentation was gone in about 4-5 months. It takes a long time to clear hyperpigmentation. We have to wait until each layer of those skin cells shed off our face, which is a very slow process 😢 But if you stick with AHA/BHAs day after day, it WILL clear eventually 🙏🏼
Yes its a good combination. I would use the alpha arbutin daily and mandelic depending on % once a week as an actual chemical peel. Vit C during the day, and start a retinol at night ( do not use retinol on the chemical peel day) as usual all new products should be started progressivly 2 times a week 3 times a week 5 times a week then daily. If you have sensitive skin use a good moisturizer fragrance free with anti inflamatory ingredients such as liquorice, niacinamide and soothing ingredients like panthenol hope this has been useful
I have a pretty simple routine, and I love it. a nice toner, niacinamide moisturizer, and of course sunscreen. sometimes I use a chemical exfoliant once every other week because I can't be bothered lol.
I have malasma on my upper lip (so I have a permant moustache), I have brown spots around my eye area. All came when I was pregnant with my son (but I also have pcos). I've been having chemical peels help speed up fading. When I get acne its purple and turns brown. After the peel my skin look tan. Before the peel I couldn't hide the discolouration under makeup, now makeup can cover it.
I love Faded, but the smell… oh good grief it’s foul. I threw out half a tube after having waited three months to get it because it was sold out. I just can’t. Switched over to Peach Slices azelaic acid serum and Sephora C+E Ultra Glow Serum to replace it. So far so good.
thank you sm for this video. my mom struggles with hyperpigmentation and doesnt have as much knowledge and resources to really know what to get so this video was very educational
Great video, I was just looking into these ingredients in several anti-hyperpigmentation/brightening serums! Queens 7 in 1 brightening serum has four of those great ingredients in it (Transexamic Acid, Alpha-Arbutin, Kojic Acid, and Niacinamide) and Fade Bright Lightening has three (Alpha Arbutin, Azelaic Acid, and Kojic Acid). Also, LOVE LOVE LOVE your nails today 💖
In my experience really the only thing that permanently breaks up stubborn hyperpigmentation (and not just fading or brightening) are more invasive treatments like lasers, deep peels, microneedling, mesotherapy etc. You need to kill off the melanocytes that are producing the excess pigment (without eliciting a rebound response) and it's hard to do with just topicals, at least for me - I have dark skin. Excessive use of topicals sensitized my skin and made the pigmentation worse because of a rebound inflammatory response. What I've learned is that I must use products that have anti-inflammatory, anti-redness, soothing, etc. properties for any of these other ingredients to work.
I’ve heard microneedling can cause an inflammatory response but I read one of the benefits of microneedling is getting rid of hyperpigmentation. So I don’t know what to think .
@@user-es4ri5zu4k you’re saying microneedling with the miracle BR is ok even though it’s got Vitamin C? I read that you should not be using retinols and vitamin C right after microneedling but you’re saying it’s OK to do that ? Can you give me instructions on the proper way to microneedle with it ? I have the Dr Pen M8. Can I use a numbing cream beforehand ? Can I use HA afterwards? Please share protocol. And the Dos and Donts.
You did not mention Cyspera (cystamine) which many dermatologists are saying is the only thing that addresses hyperpigmentation. Have you tried this and did it not work for you?
Tried Cyspera and into my 2nd tube. Amazing result! The hyperpigmentation just turn skin tone but slightly different from your original colour… so if someone goes really near to u, like almost wanna kiss yr face they will see it.
Cassandra I LOVED this video. I can’t say enough about Agency. It has helped transform my skin. I was wondering if you could make a video about Bader’s TFC8? So expensive… but I bought the cheapest product available in the line. I can’t believe the depth and life it’s brought to my complexion. It’s wonderful. Your videos help me to use my skincare so efficiently. I’m 47 years old and look like a FAIRY!! Thank 🥰🥰🥰
U hit it on the head! Sometimes others don’t readily see what gives us insecurities. Tho I only wish to clear pigmentation in certain spots, I saw a UA-camr this morning who uses Permanence skincare, which extremely lightened her skin within 11 yrs. She also mentioned a seemingly questionable skincare called Petals + Gloss. I love ur expert education.
I started using azelaic acid when my Dr prescribed it to me. It worked like magic for me. I was so happy after a few days. I would start using it every other day though. So I alternate between my azelaic acid and the geek and gorgeous retinal. Skin takes time to see the results with the retinal but it's worth it. The azelaic acid worked within a few days for me though. 100% recommend.
I used The Ordinary azelaic acid for well over a year with no changes in my rosacea or dark spots, just tons of irritation. I switched to Paula’s Choice azelaic acid, it calmed my redness some but was still irritating. I set it aside for now to try Maelove Fade Away Brightening Serum. 🤦🏽♀️🙄
I have listened to tons of videos with Cassandra-my main concern is anti-aging (too late-haha), wrinkles and especially hyperpigmentation. I have several spots that are quite dark. I would pay Cassandra to look at my skin, tell me what I need specifically and when to use each product, layering them with The Ordinary. I have my list of The Ordinary products I should be using, but very confused about which one to use on top of the other-should some be used only every other day, etc. etc. My head is spinning!! I bought the Vitamin C cream-and this HAS to work, because I can feel the tingle!! I want to stay with The Ordinary specifically because of the high percentage of good ingredients, but the price!
What would you recommend for melasma? I was on a really strong birth control and didn't read the warning that I should avoid the sun so have melasma in the middle of my forehead. I've had it for 3 years now and cannot figure out how to get rid of it 😭
Luv your videos their so informative and funny at times 😅I’m an Aesthetician and I love learning about products that I can recommend to my clients if they don’t purchase products from me.. thanx casandra.. I always say knowledge is power and thanx for sharing your experience and knowledge ❤ keep shining 🤩
Great information, but you definitely spoke really fast and it was hard to keep up with the information. I can understand the need to want to get it all in under a certain time marker, but we need to be able to hear and process what you’re saying. Thanks, but I’ll have to continue to watch Dr Dray.
Regimen Lab’s Vitamin X and Level serum. I’m surprised those weren’t included considering they don’t have any problematic ingredients unlike faded serum
I have loved the agency dark spot formula. The vast majority of the age spots and freckles have gone in less than 3 months. I wish the future formula would erase the wrinkles as quickly.
Licorice root extract is proven to help uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. Unfortunately there's no affordable product available so make I just mix SPF30 sunscreen with the liquid licorice extract. I also recommend gentle exfoliation with Boots own brand scrub
Thank you for providing so much helpful information in one video! Do you or anyone reading this have any recommendations for treating melasma on the forearms? Having lived in Los Angeles since 1985 and even though I worked indoors and had very little exposure to the sun, I still developed melasma on the entirety of my forearms when I went through menopause. It's not safe to use hydroquinone on large areas of the body like the arms.
Just wanted to clarify...are you saying that the same list of ingredients for hyperpigmentation can be used for HYPOpigmentation? Specifically I'm dealing with post surgical red marks. Thanks
I asked my GPs about something that helps with hyperpigmentation which tends to stay for weeks or even a year or more after any cut, and they told me that there's no such a thing and they cannot neither prescribe nor recommend anything OTC unless I want to spend money just for the sake of spending. Same thing told me dermatologists. Same thing in Spain and in Israel - two countries with high healthcare level.
You forgot about cysteamine in your cheat sheet. This is also a very potent ingredient that had been proven to be effective on skin pigmentation. It's safe on all skin type and can be used forever without side effect. Cysteamine are considered to be an alternative option replacement for those have bad reaction to hydroquinone which is considered to be the gold standard for treating hyperpigmentation.
Hi Cassandra, I learned a lot from this video and I wanted to say thanks. But I have also been struggling with hyperpigmentation and I have these spots on my cheek that don't go away (its been over a year). Is this normal? I've been using vitamin c and sunscreen everyday and I have a good enough skin care routine, do you have any recommendations? I'm also in my teenage years, if this helps. (Love your content btw!)

Yes. Finally i'll try to save money and do laser. Cream against hyperpigmentation often take revenge or benefits fade away once you stop using it.

This is gonna be helpful for us pcos hirsutism babes!
Ok ive seen hundreds of agency ads now im getting it today because of this video !!! Thank you 😊
Cassandra your hair looks so great!!
You can add that one in your morning routine. It's not too much as long as your skin is not sensitive to those ingredients
Urban Skin Rx Brightening & pH balancing Toner has 6 of these ingredients. Licorice, alpha arbutin, niacinimide, tranexamic acid, Azelaic acid, and kojic acid.
And vitamin c serum also
I have a pretty simple routine, and I love it. a nice toner, niacinamide moisturizer, and of course sunscreen. sometimes I use a chemical exfoliant once every other week because I can't be bothered lol.
Look up Dr. Vinita Rattan, she specializes in making videos about skin that reacts like that.
@@Kaibigan39 I'll definitely check out her channel
Did it work?
Can you mention what products you used and what procedures you’ve had done ?
@@SleeplessinOC The most effective treatments have been mesotherapy and microneedling with a product called Miracle Touch BR
Topicals are a big no no for my hyperpigmentation that's almost all over my body
Cassandra you should review the Theraface Pro by Therabody. It's a 6 in 1 facial tool with microcurrent, led light and a bunch of other attachments.
You did not mention Cyspera (cystamine) which many dermatologists are saying is the only thing that addresses hyperpigmentation. Have you tried this and did it not work for you?
Why pay so much money? I used sunscreen in the winter and that solved it for me
@@betsyc6055 Because it doesn’t work for everyone depending on how much melanin they have.
Tried Cyspera and into my 2nd tube. Amazing result! The hyperpigmentation just turn skin tone but slightly different from your original colour… so if someone goes really near to u, like almost wanna kiss yr face they will see it.
It works very well.
Bought it and it doesn’t work
Loved agency! The dark spot treatment was awesome! 🙌🏽 Such great info in this vid!
You mentioned hypo pigmentation at the beginning, but I didn’t see any recommendations, what should I do as it’s under my lower lip, thank you.
pretty sure there's nothing over the counter u can do regarding hypo pigmentation.
I use agency and it has been a game changer dramatically!! hydrocanone , tretinoin and acylic acid yes 😘😘😘😊
Oh, I could watch and listen to your videos whole day. Arghhhh very informative videos
Thank 🥰🥰🥰
Can you use HSA dollars for this?
I would like the routine you use in times you use them and when you stop using it. Like a second video with your picks and routine. Thank you❤
I'd love a video on skin care for tattooed skin. There are lots of guides to healing tattoos but is there any skin care specific for tattooed skin?
You are a gem!!! You have helped me so much with figuring out my skin issues! I love your energy and vibe!!! Keep doing what your doing! ❤
Doc your face is something new.
Amazing job! Thank you for always being so informative 🙏
A M A Z I N G video!! I can watch it over and over. Thank you!!
Y😢😢 😊
Great info. Too many creams to select from. Pls let me know one or two that do the job for reducing hyperpigmentation. Which sun screen is the best.
YOUR HAIR IN THIS VIDEO 😍😍😍
I've had it for 3 years now and cannot figure out how to get rid of it 😭
You better work that curly hair honey😍😍
Cassandra! I really love your content. And the main reason is your personality. keep going!
Thank you for sharing these amazing products. All the best in the New Year.
Loving your hair 😍 🤩
Luv your videos their so informative and funny at times 😅I’m an Aesthetician and I love learning about products that I can recommend to my clients if they don’t purchase products from me.. thanx casandra.. I always say knowledge is power and thanx for sharing your experience and knowledge ❤ keep shining 🤩
Great information, but you definitely spoke really fast and it was hard to keep up with the information. I can understand the need to want to get it all in under a certain time marker, but we need to be able to hear and process what you’re saying. Thanks, but I’ll have to continue to watch Dr Dray.
You can adjust the playback speed to slow it down. I actually speed up her videos since I’m short on time.
For my acne problems, I always use Monsia products, which dry and clear them up without leaving blemishes on the skin 😎
Regimen Lab’s Vitamin X and Level serum. I’m surprised those weren’t included considering they don’t have any problematic ingredients unlike faded serum
Your hair looks so gorgeous curly!
I love you wearing your hair naturally curly! It looks so good!🔥➰
I have loved the agency dark spot formula. The vast majority of the age spots and freckles have gone in less than 3 months. I wish the future formula would erase the wrinkles as quickly.
I used hydroquinone for a year and didn’t see a difference. Trentinoin also didn’t help hyperpigmentation or melasma. It did make my skin look shiny!
Me too! Pretty disheartening that the spots don’t budge
This me, 2 years of tretinoin hyperpigmentaton still the same
perhaps bad diet, or using a bad sunscreen
@@alonaampuan6834great diet, lots of sunscreen, and full coverage hat. My face never sees the sun 😆.
At 0:21 my brain started singing: I could be brown, I could be blue, I could be violet skyyy!! 😂
Hey Cassandra, video request here please. Please can you make an informative video on Kojic Acid for hyperpigmentation? Pleeeeeaaaaase ☺️
Excellent video. A lot of info well organized and presented.
Licorice root extract is proven to help uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation.
Unfortunately there's no affordable product available so make I just mix SPF30 sunscreen with the liquid licorice extract.
I also recommend gentle exfoliation with Boots own brand scrub
How u used liquirice pls reply ,is it effective
Thank you for this information Cassandra! Great as always!
The silver lining is that the car burglar is now going to have amazing complexion!
Hello, great video! You didnt mention Vitamine E, does that mean you dont think its helpful?
I'm usually not a fan of hyperspeech (yes, I just made that up, lol), but you're good at what you do. (And I love the cheat sheet! Thank you!)
Can you make a video talking more about Vitamin C derivatives please ♥️
Low ferritin level
HypoThyroid
Insuline resistance
Sugary foods
All are triggering factors
You forgot about cysteamine in your cheat sheet. This is also a very potent ingredient that had been proven to be effective on skin pigmentation. It's safe on all skin type and can be used forever without side effect. Cysteamine are considered to be an alternative option replacement for those have bad reaction to hydroquinone which is considered to be the gold standard for treating hyperpigmentation.
name a product with cysteamine
Cass, your videos are so good and educational. You nail it every time!
Get a prescription retinoid
Vitamin c is actually one of the least effective ingredients for hyperpigmentation due to how unstable it is.
This is an amazing video, Cassandra, thank you. All the info I need to know!!!
Ladies dint forget first n foremost you have to fix it internally .watch out if you stressed out or suffering from adrenal fatigue...nothing will help if uts not addressed or fixed internally .
I loved all the info. But as a beginner I don’t know where to start. Hyper pigmentation is my main problem.
Love you Cassandra. Thank you for sharing the tips.
