*** UPDATE: July 25, 2017
After receiving the update to patch the 911 rebooting bug, the touch latency is no longer as evident as before. Scrolling through twitter and taping to stop has immediate response, unlike what was happening prior the update. Some have mentioned in the comments regarding the Magnification Gestures to cause the lag... not sure what that is and how it would have been enabled but perhaps. I double checked after the update and it's set to OFF by default.
HardwareCanucks is it as good as the iPhone 7/ Galaxy S8 now. Kinda worried as I just ordered one a couple hours ago
You'll love it. I do :) I've used it for 2 weeks now.
HardwareCanucks thanks for the update! I was worried because lag in the screen would be very annoying
yeah its suposed that the op5 has a better touch latency than de s8 or s7 and the same than the pixel xl, curretly i dont have any latency rom 4.5.8 might was fixed, and now also has a really good 4k eis :) good review.
This is the first time watching a video from you. Your review style is different than others and your video style too I like it. Subscribed immediately. There's also this guy named Flossy Carter his reviews are also unique and somewhat funny. BTW which camera do you use to make these youtube vids?
that intro was extremely well-shot
Welcome to HardwareCanucks
3xplosiv0 Yes I thought it was an adv from OnePlus themself .
you must be new here
Do you guys know Brandon Havard?
Their b rolls are getting better every episode.🤙🏻
There is no touch latency issue. That happens on loads of phones, the problem is that you have an accessibility setting called magnification gesture on which you must turn OFF. After that I promise your touch latency issue will be fixed. Please like this so he sees and hopefully I can improve his experience with the OnePlus 5. Great video.
Is this true? I was planning on buying the op5, but that touch latency thing he mentioned really scared me off. That and the jelly scrolling
Yes it can be fixed like that, it probably isn't even enabled by default and he enabled it by accident I think. The jelly scrolling is annoying though, and I'm not sure if I believe OnePlus that it is only on some devices.
Yahya Rahman Thanks man! It works
Rodolfo Guerra You're welcome. Glad I could help you.
Yup, this is the first ever review that say OP5 have performance issue
You know why there isn't a one plus 4? Because in mandarin, one plus 4 is "一加四" (yī jiā sì) which sounds nearly identical to "一家死" (yī jiā sǐ) which means "whole family dies".
Whoops i never heard that before. Thanks.
Ares Or you know. The OnePlus 3T was the "OnePlus" 4.
wolfstar yes it is the fifth phone
They didn't name it One Plus 4 and it was more of a refresh than a whole new model. Also many Chinese people are very superstitious and One Plus is Chinese owned.
wolfstar People in China are highly superstitious and skipping the 4, which is very common in parking lots and building floors in China, can't possibly be a coincidence.
You kinda rapped there for a bit.

Hamza Kasim hahahaaaa dimitry the rapper...lol
Omg yessssss
yes or no
let me know
in the comments below
lol... weird
Love how Dmitry does more with $5k of equipment than LTT does with $50k. Fantastic work man!
It's all about technique and skills, the gear wouldn't make you a better content creator, maybe expensive gear would make you videos look better but you still use more of your skill for that.
Keep in mind LTT releases one video a day. It's a different approach to reviews in general.
LTT is "cut the bullshit and let's talk about this thing"
Dimitri is much more eye porn and in depth in the review, similar to MKBHD
Alberto Restifo Yeah but if you're the kind of company who can buy $500k worth of gear to get that 8k e-peen then hiring an extra camera op or two to a allow you to shoot better content shouldn't be an issue. LTT aims for the minimum required for success, which is really disappointing with what they could be doing with their gear.
That argument doesn't entirely fly, since LTT has a LOT more people working there. You have people whose job is nothing more than shooting gorgeous B-roll footage.
Then you probably haven't seen some of their amazing videos. They don't make it as fancy as Dmitry all the time, but when they do it's extremely good. Brandon is exceptionally skilled. Also keep in mind that everyone has their own style.
I don't upgrade my phone very often and always look for a good deal when I do. Still rocking the 1+1 and very happy with it. Until I see a breakrough in new battery tech or some new feature that is really worth it. These yearly refreshes aren't very interesting. 8gb ram? Thats overkill for a phone. The dual lenses is a gimmick.
The main thing OnePlus had going for them was price and they've lost that advantage now.
I agree with the dual lense thing. I say have the most powerful single one you can get before even considering 2.
LeJimster agreed
Mate 9 is really good. It does everything a phone needs to better than all. I get about 2 days of battery life with medium to heavy use.
i like the dual lenses, you can make awesome portrait pictures with the background blurred
a wise businessman once said to me, the more you feed the customer, the more hungry you'll be. this 1+5 is obviously just a cash grab. just to keep the company live. hopefully they will release new flagship killer just like how they made 1+1
Gratz on 666k subs. Satan rejoices!
lol
ohhh yeah
Spooky O.O
stfu
close one, 667k now
Touch latency might be better if you try turning off magnification gestures in Accessibility options. That made a huge difference on my OP3T.
I bought the OnePlus 5 the day it was announced with the special price and fast shipping and I love it. I'm surprised Dmitry didn't mention the super fast fingerprint detection (or did I miss it ?). I was not planning to use it myself at first because I thought it would probably miss most of the times or be too slow but it works so well it surprised me and I love it. I tried replicating the jello effect but I can't, which is wierd because I would have thought that all phones would be affected if it's caused by the AMOLED screen. I have the 6GB version but I would not think it's different than the 8GB one besides having less memory and less storage ? The touch screen also seems fine to me but maybe it would be more apparent if I would try the iPhone right next to it, not sure... In terms of actual usage, with near stock Android, Snapdragon 835, it's super responsive. The only negative point for me is no wireless charging, since I was using it before with my previous phone and I liked it. The camera is good, but not as exceptional as the marketing material would lead you to believe. In conclusion, I would say it does pretty much everything very well, and the price is decent, so it's not a revolution but a solid buy for the price.
I've got the OP5, I see little jelly scrolling, not as much as in the video. But I sence NO TOUCH DELAY AT ALL... Actually I used my friends Galaxy S8 and that phone was much much slower at EVERYTHING...!
I saw a guy in Portugal with one of these before watching and I was like shit this looks nice
Still with muy OP3T and very happy, no lag, no nothing
same here, just a well made piece of tech! :)
Jerooski Still here with the Oneplus One, its a great phone so far :)
Same still get near 6+ hours of screen on time
I'm also still using my OP3t. Zero reason to upgrade for at least another year.
still having my op1, happy with it
Wait... On my OnePlus 5...I didn't notice the screen latancy despite using a iPhone 6s for past one year.., nor the 911 bug.. nor jelly effect is present... What's worng with my phone...😣😣
WhatsUpOnMobile same
Same. My OP5 has none of the deficiencies people complain about. Definitely concur about OIS though, videos are jerky.
I'm planning on buying a Oneplus 5 but i need your opinion. Is the touch latency really that bad?How is the battery life and camera?
Tahmid Arham its very good but you should maybe test it before buying. Battery life is very good and it charges REALY fast i personaly like the camera but some people seem to not like it
Tahmid Arham I'll have a full review on my channel soon.. till then ....
1.) Touch latency is not at all present at least on my unit... After watching the video my eyes were looking for touch latency but I didn't find any....
2.) Battery life has been just awesome... According to Android Authority.. it's has the best battery life amongst One plus 3, Galaxy S8 or the Google pixel XL... But the real game changer is the dash charging.. which charges your phone considerably faster than any phone out there... Just in 67 minutes in my testing...
3.) Jelly effect is not there on my unit.. but even if it's there it's not a game changer at all...
4.) Camera in my opinion is great.. I still prefer iPhone for it's consistently great images... But I love one plus more because of it's Manual mode and the 2x(cough cough 1.6x) optical zoom is awesome.. though it tends to soften the front camera..
5.) Speed is a major factor at least for me and OP5 absolutely nails that as well and till now no game could I find on play store could I find the could make this phone lag..
Overall a great phone for the buck and one of the best phones out there.. the Android purist and the speed demon inside me absolutely loves this phone...
You Can check out my channel for it's unboxing and Gaming review...
after watching so many reviews of the phone, i thought i would probably not see anything new. This review was very good, kept me interested till the end.
- Input lag on a touch screen? Ouch. Glad to see this was addressed in a patch.
Cinematography for the intro was so awesome I thought I was watching an Ash Tailor video.
Ash is king... can never touch his level
-D
+Hardware Canucks what is that track in the intro, cos its definitely not Rogers and Dean- No Doubt
I don't have any of the issues stated. 1 to 1 scrolling and typing. Wonder if there is a software revision or update that resolved this.
Watching this on my OnePlus 5 😍
Sarath Ramakrishna how is it any issues?
Check out my review too :)
Considering it's supposed to be the flagship killer that undercuts the big guys, it doesn't do that well. It's a good phone, but considering the price in most countries, there is no reason for anyone to get it over the S8, especially considering the lack of more mainstream features such as water resistance, OIS, wireless charging, and how it's stock android (though personally I prefer as close to stock as possible) in the OP5. It's not what we were expecting, though some expectations could never have been met, and that kills it.
BOSK the Xiaomi mi 6 is better
Piter Ambrosy No headphone jack, bloatware UI, not even close to better.
BOSK lol what? t's $479 compared to 800. It does in fact undercut the "big guys" for the other. And the S8 has stock Android? Lol no.
I had the S8, switched it for an OP5, much better.
S8 is just laggy, and tbh the screen is like pretty womanly, the easiest way to describe it, lol.
Currently the S8 is $580USD, with $724USD without this promotion. The S8 has wireless charging, IPS 68, OIS, and doesn't have stock android, the OP5 has none of that and stock android, not many are fans of stock android. It's not innovating in any way. 8GB, while nice, doesn't have a big enough impact for someone to spend $100 on their 8GB vs their 6GB. There's nothing special about the OnePlus 5, even though the 835, headphone jack, and front facing fingerprint sensor are nice. The OnePlus 5 is a good budget phone, but it just doesn't compete with flagships. Had OnePlus not marketed it in such a manner that it did, it'd be fine.
I went to the HTC U11 after the floop of the One plus 5. 2 weeks later, I'm in love with the HTC
There's a video of the waterproofing here on youtube.. the guy puts it in a glass of water for 30 seconds or so, while it's on, pulls it out and dries it off and it was fine.
You forgot to mention that the stereo audio recording is reversed on the OP5. ie. audio coming from the left sounds on the right channel and audio coming from the right sounds on the left channel.
Uh...I'm going to have to disagree with everything you said complaining about the screen. I've had my OnePlus 5 for over a week. I've never had any issues with the screen having any "touch latency", just tested and do not get the "jelly effect", and this is the brightest screen I've ever had on a smartphone, both at the lowest and highest settings.
It's the best phone I've ever used and it's a steal at $540. Also, the battery life is miles beyond other phones.
Same here. Came from a nexus 5 and have not experienced any jelly scrolling or input lag. Great phone so far.
So in day to day experience, it doesn't ruin your experience. Your not saying "what a piece of shit phone i can't even use" ?
I'm planning on buying a Oneplus 5.Can you plz tell me how is the touch response and battery on the phone?
It's the most responsive phone I've ever used and the battery life is insanely good. I use my phone heavily and can usually get through a work day with a single charge.
thankyou for ur opinion
Finally had a chance to watch! Very beautifully shot and great review!
+Matthew Moniz thanks man :)
Great review Dmitry!
Loved the filmic intro, maybe some shots were a bit soft wide open but that bokeh looks so unique!
I agree with mos of the review but I honestly can't see any response latency on my unit, I don't know if it's just because I don't have an S8 or iPhone 8 though.
yes, my latency comment is in comparison to the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S7. If you dont see it, good for you :) better stick with what you think is best for now.
I've been using it for the last 5 days and touch latency is not an issue in my unit. It even feels like it responds to my touch before I touch the screen... battery life have been amazing, never in my life I reached more than 7 hours SOT.
Been thinking of picking up the official style cover, can't choose between sandstone and carbon though...
Can you drop Open Camera onto this and see how it does ?
i currently have a samsung note 4 and i am looking for an upgrade now. my note 4 is damn slow and i cant spend a single day without my phone doing a random reboot on its own. should i upgrade to oneplus 5.?
How would the microphone handle recording loud concerts/music???
I think the latency issue might have been with your model specifically, because on my model it's pretty responsive
Isn't there an update for OIS or EIS for video recording ?
Can any one please tell me that intro's song name.
I've been using a OP5 since June 26th, and have never had a problem with latency, or responsiveness. Otherwise, great review Dmitri :)
I must say the camerawork and editing work is on point as is Dmitry's laser focus on the review and humour throughout. Thanks. Thumbs up.
I haven't ever noticed screen lag and I've had it the day it came out. Seems super quick to me. Best phone I've owned.
How can we change the font in one plus 5?
Does anyone know the brand of watch that appears around 3:10 in the video
finally someone mentioned that touch latency. I knew u was able to type faster on my iPhone
I was getting sick of the touch screen latency with my one plus 2. I was considering the one plus 5 to upgrade. Thank god you pointed out the latency problems.
Coming from a motorola turbo two that I purchased about a month after its release in 2015, the only actual reason I made the jump to the op5 was the ram (and you could say the processor too, though that might not be as relevant). It started out fast, but as I added more and more apps that I couldn't live without, it really slowed down. Even to the point where a factory reset didn't return it to its speed it used to have.
The only things that disappoint me about the op5 is the lack of an sd tray and no IP rating. While wireless charging and a 4000mAh battery would also be nice, dash charge is a new feature that I really love so those later two conveniences I can happily go without.
Which back cover are you using?
Why didn't this review come out earlier? I'm currently waiting for my op5 to ship. No other review (from what I remember) talked about the touch latency....
Damn Eric ah thanks for the info I'm usually just paranoid about spending money and waiting for something for a couple of weeks and it disappoints me.
What music did you use in the intro?
Gr8 review! Covered a lot of things that other reviews didn't.
Most beautiful camera work yet.
thanks!
I always appreciate the effort to make any HWC videos.
So, i'll never skip ads on this Channel.
The Quality is excellent.
Appreciate it very much!
-D
Can you turn off the vibration for the fingerprint scanner?
I ended up picking my Nexus 5X apart and taking out the whole vibration engine to stop it.
You cannot... it's very subtle though, almost inaudible and only there to notify the user it's being activated.
Ok, I think it's a bit less annoying than on my Nexus 5X that used 100% power and made a loud noise. However I still dislike the idea. Vibration should only be used when the login attempt failed imo. There's no need to vibrate when I can clearly see that I'm already logged in.
Does anyone remember the OnePlus 3 or 4 or are those only existent when Dimitri mentions them?
Great video man, thanks for talking about usability of dual lense , i do also think that wide angle would be more useful.
And yes, the typing delay and keyboard related problem is more considerable too. That would be very annoying .
👍👍
Been using the S7 since launch and i can honestly say i can see myself using this phone for atleast 2yrs more. Its that good, perfect size for me too.
Thinking of picking up an OP5 soon. Biggest concern is the touch delay/latency and the jelly effect. Anyone with the OP5 can comment on it and share experiences please?
one of the best review after watching maybe 10 review videos of the same phone and having one in the hand.
My S7 edge doesnt have jelly effect
It slightly visible in power saving mode when you put upside down
Exynoss dual sim version
Great review as always. Phone reviews on this channel are amazing. The cinematography is stunning! Sticking to my G6 though
Thanks for making this video!
Very well balanced video!
I've seen about five other reviews before yours and nobody was talking about the Touch Delay issue.
Now in retrospect, these other videos all seem a bit biased.
I found lots of people complaining about the lag issue on XDA.
Thank you for keeping it real, I was about to get a 1+5, but now I'm looking for alternatives.
Liked + subbed.
Great content nd excellent elaboration, i hardly subs any channel except some of the best ones, you are the one...
Hopefully ul be upto the mark always
Tbh I really like the effect of jelly scrolling. Touch latency is an issue on all phones but not as prominent as on the OP3T, which I'm watching this video on right now. However it can be fixed by going into settings, gestures and tweaking the magnification gesture. The no OIS is a really big bummer though. OP3T ftw
What u did here i call it art. Plus the best critics about this phone. Easely the best 1+5 review i have seen... 👏👏
Is the touch latency also present in OnePlus 3/3T? Please answer someone
just got a note 5, found a really good deal on brand new unlocked 64gb version. only reason I got a new phone is the microphone on my old xperia z2 is crapping out. I don't feel the need, nor have the money to get the latest and greatest flagship phone, but getting an older flagship phone turns out to still be a really good phone and costs way less.
Hey Dimitri could you elaborate on how the Onplus 5 drives the HD6xx headphones? Does it manage to fully drive them, ie get 90%-95% of the quality you could with a dedicated amp? How would that compare to say a budget $100 dac/amp combo? Does the oneplus 5 give about the same audio quality, at least in terms of driving the HD6xx?
+Dimitar Ivanov volume wise on the OP5 its as much as I'd comfortably drive from my JDS Labs the Element amp. So quite powerful. Detail wise, also impressive. Not as rich low end pick up and reserved soundstage but satisfying detail with body. It also absolutely crushes the iPhone 7 that has so little power.
But they said in the launch event that they improved the touch lag :/
I've had the op5 since release I don't get any tocuh delay or jelly scrolling?? I think you have a bad unit
I've already picked up mine, 6gb of ram is enough for me for games and heavy social media use
the phone is really good for where I am coming from: galaxy s6.
I think most reviewer who gave it a bad review compared it to the newer phones like the galaxy s8 or iphone 7, forgetting that most people are not using these newer phones and are upgrading from much older phones like myself. So in my case it's a huge upgrade and not a compromise by any means
I have not experienced any touch latency or jelly effect. So I am happy with my device. The only area I m a bit disappointed is the Camera but then, at this price, it nails it. I hope they will release some Camera updates too!
Loving my OP3T. However, battery life is not living up to what reviewers have been saying. I only get around 3.5-4 hours of screen on time (100% - 10%). Screen is at auto brightness, moderate use of web browsing and media consumption. Is this normal?
I got minimum of 7 hours on my OP3T, no idea what you're doing. I get more on my OP5.
The first thing i thought when I saw that intro was...Ash Taylor?
Great vid as usual Dmitry!
there is now image stabilisation for 4k with new updates
I live in a place where you need to work more than half a year to buy a high grade phone. So, I have a Lenovo Vibe K6 I paid like $200 US on it and it have less touchscreen delay that this phone on the video... Makes me fell good because when I bought it were people complaining about some screen delay, but I think they fixed it.
I think they have update the os with EIS which really improve a lot.. It is much cheaper than other phones.
I have the same OP5 8gb ram, to be honest I did also test the twitter app by swapping up and down and tourch the screen to stop, there was no delay. It just stops right as my hand touches the screen without any sluggish weird stuff. I don’t know mb its just my device😊 only
I had this paused in another tab so i forgot it was a HW Canucks video. Then the intro started playing and I thought this was an Ash Tailor video until I heard Dimitri's voice.
How do you like that G-Shock? Is that the MTG-G1000D? I've been keeping my eye on that, might pull the trigger at some point. Great video, btw.
I love your intros for the Oneplus reviews are amazing!!
Can touch screen latency be improved with software updates?
I would like to say, as I type this on my OP5, the touch latency, at least for me, is great. No issues here. Probably just early models being a bit buggy.
I ordered my 8gb/128gb OP5 within a few minutes of the release press conference completing. I've had my OP5 for over a month now and I never had any latency issues with scrolling. With nearly 2k images saved to my phone, rapid scrolling and stopping for the images to render never produced an issue since day 1. Scrolling Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or any news article never produced any latency issues either.
The only problem I've had is the jelly effect (which honestly is barely noticeable now), and 2 pain points which is occasional oversaturation of some photos, and the lack of optical image stabilization. Otherwise this phone has been a beast. I also have the OP3 which was a great phone, in addition to the Note 5, and recently had the Note 3 & 4, the S6 & S7. This is heads and shoulders the best all around phone I've owned by wide margin, excluding the OP3 where the OP5 is incrementally better. And the 5 OTA updates is not inaccurate. OP does a phenomenal job of releasing updates quickly. For such a small company they do a great job getting things updated and listen to user feedback and actually do something with it. Unlike Samsung or Apple.
If you're looking for a phone you can hang on to for more than 1 year and still have it be a dynamic device after that time, you'll be very hard pressed to find something better overall than the OnePlus 5.
Well maybe I'm just not switched on enough but I find my OP5 as smooth as silk, no jelly effect, at least that I can find, and latency never seems an issue. Build quality seems really very good and I like the slim design that means that even with a case it is still compact, I'm not over bothered about water proofing so long as it will survive normal use. The smooth near pure android OS is another plus, heavily commercialised OS such as Samsung use is just awful. The camera? It's seems pretty good so far haven't used it a lot, it would have been nicer to have a super wide angle option instead of the zoom.
thanks for pointing out that touch latency, I'm never getting a phone THAT slow. Looks like iPhone or Samsung are the only options if you want a good phone.
After I heard the issue with the screen, I had to cross it off my list of possible candidates for my next smartphone and the 3T will take its place for now.
Finally an honest review which doesn't hype up the phone which just didn't meet its promises. Very good review, glad I'm sticking with well known companies which have experience in making smartphones.
Someone who gots the phone, do you recommend it ??
any one plz tell that intro song.
I cannot live without that Alert slider on my OP3. Transitioning to another phone for a week was really hard for me
Wow, you really upped your cinematography game, Dmitry. Ash has brought a good influence on you!
Sorry, but I think you got a defective unit. My OP5 has no touch latency at all, and the color accuracy of the screen is great, even at low brightness. Also the jelly effect is there on my unit, but is hardly noticeable. I would even argue that it feels somewhat natural as it makes moving through long pages more 'fluent'.
The weird thing about holding other AMOLED phones upside down is also complete bullshit. The same deformations occur when you hold those phones right side up, it then only is more apparent on the bottom instead of on the top.
Still, the OP5 isn't perfect of course. I would've liked waterproofing for example, and also an option to use the second SIM slot as a microSD slot would've been great. But hey, it is way cheaper than other flagships and offers a similar (if not better) experience for that lower price.
Want to upgrade to the ip7 from my s7, but I gotta wait for the new ip.
I've been looking for something good enough to replace my Nexus 5. Still haven't found it.
Its amazing how, with a gh5 and not a Red camera, you manage to make these amazing shots which look even better than MKBHD's.
Intro was awesome and it made me wonder on the few subscribers for this channel but as the video moved along i kinda got why it's like that
Care to elaborate?
HardwareCanucks the close up shots of the smartphone itself were on par. screen of the smartphone in these shots looked terrible. Edited filters might have to be blamed for that. Vice narration quality was also not impressive. It did not have that X factor which some of your shots in the beginning and some outdoor shots had in them. Sequencing of main points was a bit random as well. I'm a huge fan of budding emerging tech UA-camrs and you're one of them for me. Ash tailor in this regard is doing a phenomenal job. Your videos also have some amazing potential and i have strong hopes that you'll improve further.
You have anymore cellphone reviews coming soon?
Can add a segment in your phone reviews where you review the vibration motor. I think a phone should have a strong vibration motor unlike my OP3 has. I can't feel it vibrating in my pocket which is really annoying.
I know you mention the vibration but I'd like you to compare phones with each other
That was honestly one of your best videos cinematography wise ever. I watched it twice just to appreciate it enough.
thanks :)
-D
Oh my gosh Dmitry replied to me, I guess all that build up on twitter for this video was well worth it
Wow I've sent like 20 reviews on this phone and this is the first time someone mentioned anything about touch latency being poor.
+HardwareCanucks The 4K video stabilization was added recently
this vodeo reminds me some kind of old style new tech mix, nice!
does the OnePlus 3t has the touch latency issue
that intro is luv
agreed!
