This is the industry leading standard camera review , no one else offer what you do. thank you Juan.. I was expecting more in the lines of black and white sensor and not telephoto and needless 20mp. a bit dispointing .
The resolution difference was a bit surprising...
JuanBagnell I just managed to get my hands on a op5 and do my own quick comparison and I was actually really surprised with the results compared to my 2015 galaxy s6: it can not compete, simply the dynamic range is worse on the op5, but the biggest disappointment was the way they process the image , if you soon in to the picture 100% there is an art filter like color and detail rendition this is not acceptable in my opinion . Juan, did you notice this in your test? especially in high contrast situations .

You know Juan, specs, camera quality and all aside, I kinda miss when OnePlus did wood-backed phones.
It does absolutely nothing to improve performance, but wood backed phones like the OnePlus 2 or the Moto X Pure from Motorola were really attractive. It made the phones look beautiful in a sea of glass and metal, at least to my eyes. I honestly miss that
No joke. I miss ALL the experiments. Leather, wood, carbon fiber, kevlar. So many ways to differentiate. Bummer so many just land on glass...
True that! Now that you mention it, I do miss seeing leather backs too like the ones on the LG G4, or that self-healing cover on the G Flex. And of course, the signature sandstone backs from OnePlus phones of old. Again, i genuinely miss them all, they made for a really nice variety in the smartphone market :-/

when is the audio review coming out. I am looking at LG V30 or HTC U11 at this point tho. I love to take long exposure shots handheld on my OnePlus 3 (I do everything, including white balance in manual so the improved colour science isn't a big deal for me) and the lack of OIS on this thing is a deal-breaker for me. I can pull off handheld 2 second exposure quite well on my op3 and at times can even pull off 3-4s exposures!!

Juan Carlos, HTC U11 or this if money were no object? I'm leaning towards HTC this year. Coming from OP3, and it looks to me like the U11 is more of an upgrade than the OP5.

i got oneplus 5, phone is doing really great job but problem is occurring in camera, when i zoom it at 4* its pixels starts cracking and at 8* zoom it shows the worst.
please share information about it

Hi Juan. Curious, have you tried to put an extra tempered glass on the camera lens on phones (for extra-protection reason)? If not, what do you think, does it gonna decrease the photo quality significantly (increases lens flare perhaps?)?
It's tough to say, but putting cheap glass in front of a camera is usually a bad idea.
I can get a G6 or V20 for considerably less than this phone. about $100-200 off on eBay (still new) to be exact. would you say the LG cameras are better though?

I'm not sure why but when I cover up the 20 megapixel camera it affects nothing (portrait or Zoom), it's like it's redundant. Why is that?
How does this compare to the P10 plus or the new Honor 9 to the OP5? camera quality better or similar?
You can see our P10 Plus RCR to compare many of the same style shots. Me personally? I like the P10 camera better, but that's not super surprising given the price difference.
JuanBagnell the price is relativity close compared to the other brands out there. but the P10 plus isn't available here in the US. I love your reviews and just wanted to know your opinion since you just used the OP5. Great job and great work as usual

@pocketnow, @Juan if I quickly took a photo of an object 10 feet away in moderately lit indoor condition, will the first shot be clear? Or only after a bit and you realise you gotta be completely still
How reliable is the camera when trying to take a quick shot?
Tough to predict, depending on what you consider "moderately" lit. It's one of those things you have to get a feel for.
Are there any android phones with high quality microphones as those from the lumias? I'm waiting to get an android to be able to record concerts and watching it on my home theater pleasantly...

cameras on phones are getting better and better nowadays. wonder which brand will get into the top in the near future
Given the small sensor and inherent deep depth of field of phone sensors, the only smartphone camera that makes sense to me is the ultra-wide setup (around 15-20mm full-frame equivalent FOV).
For someone who already uses a large sensor camera, the only way I see a phone supplementing my shoots is if it had a sharp, ultra-wide, infinite DoF camera with software enhanced wide dynamic range.
So, instead of trying to fake physics with a cheesy software blur, more work should go into HDR videos, high-res slow motion and better wide lenses.
In the camera app on my OP3T, I can tap to focus on the shaded area. I'm running OOS OB9. OnePlus should add it back on OP5. Although its kinda annoying when I'm trying to start recording but tapped to focus.

That camera app feels a lot like the Google Camera app.
I don't know how to say. The camera performance is solid, but I feel that it's more of a sidegrade to the 3T.
Still think the Huawei approach is the best dual-cam approach, but that's just me.
Agreed. I think wide is more flexible, but I'd rather two cameras work together on every shot.

i wonder if they fixed the camera in the 5. i have a 3t and taking pictures of my 2yr old all come out blurry, especially her face.
iPhone 8 will have a 3X Optical Zoom and i wish the other lens was a wide angle lens like on the LG G6 or the upcoming Note 8. Also the front camera needs to be wider and lower lux .
'never settle' they said....so I won't.... will wait for the note 8's dual camera as this one isn't all that it was hyped.
Man I feel like optical image stabilization would have been better than the electronic. The video quality is pretty shaky. Great review as always sir.

Reviewers get the phone about a week or so before the launch events. They are allowed to use and review the phones but they have an embargo, meaning they are legally prohibited to post any videos or comments on the phone until after the launch. This is why so many reviewers already have their videos ready by today.

the panorama part is not realky a "software gremlin which needs to be addressed"... it's like that since oxygenOS4 it seems and on my OP3T, i have never known any different... it's been reported many many many times on the forum but i guess OP won't "listens to its custommers" sometimes :)
I knew y'all had the goods before this announcement. That's the correct way to build good buzz for a new product launch though. I can't wait to see what summer/fall of 2018 holds as I'll have my V20 firmly locked into my permanent collection then.

Great review, I now realize what a real big deal the camera on this phone is. I think my standards for smartphone cameras is much lower than yours. So long as the picture does not look like it was taken by a drunk in a vert fast car, its all good.
so my OP2 is quite great with big pickels at 12MP and OIS...despite the lack of Nougat
great looking phone but again this is a cheaper flagship not a flagship killer for a budget.shame that one plus messed up on this one i could ignore the low screen resolution but not bad a bad camera.great video as always juan ;)

Really depends on what you need. I like the OP image processing in low light better, but I think the wide angle shooter is more useful. LG has better video quality IMO too. It's all pros and cons. All depends on what kinds of photos and videos you like to shoot.
JuanBagnell .... photos of the kids (fast moving toddlers, indoors, often in low light... especially with Britain's often dank and dreary weather)
To my eyes, not 100% sold on qhd but loving the security of the ip68 on g6
