I’ve come to the conclusion that Uplander is the only grouse-oriented channel worth watching on UA-cam. The other channels either try too hard to be artsy with long sequences, are Canadians who exclusively ground pound (people find that entertaining?), or hunters uploading shoddy footage from the field. This is a special thing you’ve got going on with your dogs & the quality of content. To the point, candid, and none of that fluff. Thanks!
This is real grouse hunting! I love the missed shots, the brush dance and the nice shots. Keep it up man! Excellent. I agree about the artsy crap. This is fun to watch 👍
Dude….the self defense grouse is some amazing footage. I think this episode is really some of your best footage yet. Thanks for taking us along. Got me excited for the weekend.
This is the first I’ve seen your vids. I’m an old guy that grew up in far northern WI. Does my heart good to watch someone rough hunting. Anyone thinks this is easy shooting hasn’t been there. I’m pretty good and I’ve hunted with some of the best guns. This is how it is in the real world. Nice dog work, too. Thanks.

Great video! To be honest, its really refreshing to see you miss a couple. I went through a terrible shooting slump during the middle of the season this year. Its reassuring to see some footage that shows that I'm not the only one who struggles sometimes. As I have started to film some of my own hunts, I continue to be amazed at the quality of footage you get and how great you are at editing it all together. Thanks for all the inspiration!
Appreciate that and the comment man! It happens, and sometimes it’s easier said than done to just shoot better when you can’t seem to hit the broadside of a barn. Good luck out there the rest of the season 👍🏻
@5:49 That right there was insane. Very cool. I was up in the western U.P at the beginning of October and moved a few birds. Dogless this season but hopefully have a started pup to take up next fall.
Nice footage and lots of birds. Just got back from a week in MNW busting brush for birds. Had a great time with a young dog. Experienced dog cut his pad 1st hour in camp so could not use him for the week. Thanks for sharing.
I'm planning to head out in another three weeks to begin a new season. So this video is a good refresher for me. I limited out in ruffed grouse all three times I went out last year. That is fabulous grouse country with all the deciduous cover being down, and you've got a marvellous hunting dog there! I'll be watching this video again very shortly!
@UplanderLifestyle unless you hunt guys don't get it. Those grouse when cripple and still able to run get under the nastiest cover there. They bury them selves in. You would never suspect the bird was hiding right next to you on the forrest floor if not for the dog.
Very nice job brother! I love the respect and appreciation that you show for the king of the gamebird! Also love your dogs and how you’ve trained them! Keep up the great work!
Grouse flushes always used to scare the bejesus out of me. By the time I got done being rattled the grouse was long gone. I'm convinced the best way to hunt grouse is with a good pointing/setting dog. At least that way you have some idea of a grouse sitting and can be ready for the flush.
Awesome video, killer footage, Cliff! 👍 excellent dog work, especially on the one that went down with a broken leg! Love to see that tenacious fire, further exemplifying the teamwork of man and beast 👊💯

Some great dog work nice to see. Hitting pheasant tomorrow morning grouse Saturday. Picked up some spreader loads from flocchi.. talking cuts we have few different cuts going on. 3 state game areas ubly Pontiac and Lapeer . Years ago that ubly area was outstanding grouse cover but they let them Aspen stands go . We ran it last year full of deer but no birds . They are clear cutting it right now.. needed a net for that one bird those are hard to hit sometimes..
Thanks man, appreciate that 👍🏻it’s always good to see new habitat being created, we were able to have a small helping hand in some of those areas through donations we made. We’ll be after pheasants tomorrow as well, good luck!
I bought a used Remington 12 ga 1100 with a modified choke barrel. I wasn't satisfied with it for pass shooting on ducks and had a vented Poly choke put on it. That was not satisfactory for grouse so I bought a vent ribbed used skeet barrel and had it cut down to 23 inches. As I have read, a skeet barrel is choked the entire length of the barrel, so even tho I had several inches cut off where the traditional choke would be, the barrel still was choked. The combination was deadly on grouse, from close in to 35 yds. out. Being shorter was an advantage in brush. I put a side mounted scope on the gun and found that the barrel would shoot slugs and sabots for deer every bit as well as a rifled barrel I bought. This was the only shotgun I needed for many years. I discovered something quite by accident. I also discovered that if I practiced with clay pigeons before grouse season opened, I learned to take my time and get out ahead of the bird. My kills increased.
Another great video and pleasure to watch. Would love to hunt with you and your great Britts. What a day! Fantastic cover. Question: I’ve always hunted smaller covers in New England. When I had a dog years ago it was a close working Brittany (inside 40 yards). You are often calling a GPS alert out at 40-55 yards. You are hunting big covers from the looks and you obviously and justifiably trust your dogs. Do you ever hunt smaller ones and do your dogs quarter in close for you? That was one awesome retrieve under the log. Impressive. And the close point was more reminiscent of a Woodcock point! Wow. Good stuff. Thanks.
Thanks for the comment! 👍🏻 my dogs do run a bit bigger, and I like to drop them into bigger areas because of it. We will hunt some smaller spots if the cover is right and I feel like we can go in and find some birds on a short route. But for the most, we don’t because in the areas we’re in they will only produce a bird or two. It’s worth my time to go into bigger areas and find 8-12 birds on a walk vs going from multiple smaller spots to achieve the same bird numbers.
Some of the footage in this video looks just like where I hunt in northwestern Michigan. Would this be in Wexford county? Just subbed ... love looking at the great grouse habitat and "riding along" down good ol' Michigan 2-tracks. God bless.

I've watched your channel for a couple years now and enjoy the videos, I have a Brit so I enjoy the dog work. Wondering what loads you are using for grouse.
Thanks for following along! Always good to hear from another Brit guy 👍🏻 I don’t use anything special, just target loads, 7.5s and 8s when the leaves are up, then 7.5s and 6s when they fall.
Very nice, another enjoyable video. Really enjoy watching all your dogs work, but again must confess to being especially enthralled with Ember. I really like her look, size, style on point and certainly her productivity. How is Fox progressing? Any reports from any of the owners of Embers other pups?
Thanks a lot! Fox has been good, still a young dog, but her enthusiasm to go hunt has never been questioned. She’s still working on handling birds, but all of the pups have been doing great. Everyone has been out hunting and shooting birds with their pup.
Really nice job with this video man. I love grouse hunting but you dont see too many videos out there, especially of ruffed grouse hunts. Wish i still had a dog. Where i live im lucky to flush 2-3 a day, without a dog you will not see a thing.
Finding unpressured birds these days is fairly easy. Just go where the roads and 4wheeler trails arent. Im up alond canadian border by crane lake mn and if youre more than 50yards iff a trail or road its virgin birds. Always can wrangle up a limit by 9am most days.
Nice man! We’re not that far north and the birds definitely get hit even off the trails. When you find a spot that hasn’t been touched it can be magical 👌🏻 thanks for following along and good luck the rest of the season!
Cool video, good tips. I’m learning the game and get into grouse in fair numbers, but I know I can do better. I normally target prime aged stands of of aspen adjacent to aged out stands. In your experience, do you ever have luck finding concentration of birds in smaller isolated cuts, independent of other aspens in the area? I’m looking at. Few 10-15 acre younger cuts. Second question, what kennel did your dogs come from? I like smaller pointers, I have a Munsterlander. A Brittany is on my list. Your dogs hunt like mine does. They are good little dogs.
No, not really. Wolves, porkys, grass seeds, wire fence, disease/illness, torn ligaments etc... there's always a level of risk involved when running a dog. Just one of the things you have to accept if you're going to hunt with a dog.
We are so close to having them back in stock! They are on order and should be here next week. Thanks so much for the support and best of luck this season!
I am moving back to Northern Michigan andI want to get into bird hunting again. I always used a single shot 16 gauge, shooting number five or six shot shells in the past. I picked up a 28 gauge over under. For bird hunting, what shot would you prescribe, seven and a half, eight or nine? Also what choke, full, improved/modified?
Thanks for following along! For ruffed grouse hunting specifically I really like 7.5s and 8s, especially earlier in the year when the foliage is up. The small shots whistles through the leaves much better without losing energy compared to bigger shots. Plus the smaller shot gives you more BBs in your pattern, a huge upside when shooting in the woods. I will shoot open chokes because I want my pattern to be as big as possible. Skeet and Improved Cylinder. When the leaves fall I'll switch to a modified choke and If I'm really feeling frogy I'll throw a #6 in the second barrel.
@@UplanderLifestyle When I was growing up in Manistee in the 60-70's, the smallest I could find was #6. I have plenty of #6 for the 28, guess I better keep an eye out for 7.5 & 8's Thanks for explaining the chokes you use. Very helpful.
Mainer here man, absolutely love the videos on grouse hunting. One of my favorite hunts for sure, nothing like jumping a nice fat bird. Good tasting too lol
There are different species of grouse, some only live in the mountains and high elevation like Blue and Dusky Grouse. Ruffed grouse can be found in most areas of the US, as long as the habitat is there, unfortunately there's not much left in most states.
Man, you got some awesome footage! Its the stuff like that, that happens usually a couple times a season that I wish I had a camera for. Are your dogs French brits or American?
Thank you! You are right, there are always one or two hunts every year that stick out with some really cool details. This was one of them. My Brit’s are American. Thanks for following along and the comment, good luck out there 👍🏻
The one grouse you got with the red tail feathers... Ive gotten a few like that in one particular area that i hunt and ive always wondered what the meaning if the red tail feathers is. Perhaps someone in this comment section is alittle more educated than me on grouse hunting.
There are two phases of ruffed grouse red and gray. I've hunted ruffed grouse from Minnesota to Alaska and they are always two color phases. In my experience it's always random and is one more attraction to these beautiful birds.
There's a few different color phases... Red, gray, brown, chocolate, a few more I think too. The most common are Gray and Red. I don't find as many red birds, but the areas that I do find the red ones in will consistently produce red colored birds every year.

There are different species of grouse, some only live in the mountains and high elevation like Blue and Dusky Grouse. Ruffed grouse can be found in most areas of the US, as long as the habitat is there, unfortunately there's not much left in most states.
Great hunt, but a couple of of those shots I would never take that close to my dog
Is your sxs a CZ bobwhite?
That was awesome.... What state are you hunting in?
Great video. What GPS tracking collar are you using on the dogs?
Thank you! Garmin T5 mini collars and an Astro 430 GPS handheld unit.

Thanks for following along and the comment, good luck out there 👍🏻
Well.. shotgun hunting is slightly different from airguns haha
I definitely need to give this a go eventually

wow ,that area is positively polluted with birds, and man they are out to peck your eyes out!
Yes they were! It can be magical when you find them grouped up in an area and birds are flying every direction! Thanks for the comment 👍🏻
Nice video. What state is this?
Thanks for following along! 👍🏻
That didn't answer my simple question.
@@mikeveine Does it matter what state?
