    North Central BC here. Just starting my new buddy (English Setter) George, turned one year in July, we picked him up in April. His recall is poor right now as he is having too much fun. Unfortunately cold wet spring wiped out the chicks this season, not the best conditions for a rookie. Last year it was insane, the numbers we had to shoot at. My Gordon got very ill and was put to rest Jan. 12. Lucy was in her prime at seven so it was very tough. George is going to be good, hunts close. Retrieve is OK and will improve. He had training at his kennel and responds well to the whistle. Watching your dogs work is a treat. I had two Brittanys in the past and they were a lot of fun. Enjoyable video's.

      @UplanderLifestyle  Місяць тому

      Best of luck to you and George the rest of the season, fun times ahead! We had similar rains early summer that I think wiped out some broods. Bird numbers seem ok, but up and down in certain spots. Happy hunting and safe travels.

    Do you notice different tendencies while hunting in those dryer Oak environments? (scrubby, as you call it) I just moved from clay country of NE Minnesota to a sandier area further south. The crops have been very interesting. I’ve found picked apart acorns, oak galls, and hazelnuts as opposed to clover & other greens.

    • @UplanderLifestyle
      @UplanderLifestyle  Місяць тому

      The cover definitely looks a lot different between sandier and darker soil areas. I typically don't hunt sandy soil areas very often, as they just don't seem to hold as many birds. But when I do, I typically don't hunt aspen as the cuts do not have much cover in them besides just aspen. I like finding brushy areas around aspen, these areas where I'm at usually have big thickets of autumn olive (invasive) but the birds like them for food and cover.

    • @UplanderLifestyle
      @UplanderLifestyle  Місяць тому +1

      7.5s, and even 8s if I have them. Smaller the shot size the better for early season with an open choke tube. The open choke gives a really wide spread, and smaller shot side gives you more pellets in the spread, plus the smaller shot size goes through the foliage better without loosing energy.

First thing that happened the feds came in and took over our bird camp camping area,then Alcona cty let ATVs on the snow mobile trails,the Mi raised the non resident tags to $150,then Mi brought in ALL these new gun laws. No matter how bad I want to come up,I just cannot bring myself to fight all these problems. It seems Michigan just keeps shooting themselves in the foot!!!!

      There haven’t been new gun laws here in years and if the USFS came and took over your land then it sounds like it was public to begin with and not actually yours. There’s also tons more public land here in the state than in Alcona county, don’t hunt here fine but don’t complain that people are taking it away from you when opportunities have never been better in Michigan for grouse especially with the GEMS
