I’m trying to wake up while I’m at work and this definitely got me there. I’m a casual fan of these guys but never heard this particular song. Thanks! I’ll be listening to this one again.
I view it as Conan-core dude; never got sludge, which I think of Eyehategod or something along those lines, most high on fire is way too fast. Hence the non ironic conan the barbarian classification. Reminds me more of a motörhead/venom style approach to speed and energy, with my apologies for saying so, but some slight power metal influence seeped in somewhere I would think.
Speed/Stoner. In my opinion sludge Is more alternative, underground. High on Fire is more Classic metal than Grief, Eyehategod, Soilemt green, Buzzoven or Crowbar. But i love It too. The Borders between these subgeneres Is thin.
A guy I used to work with stopped and listened for a minute, then asked "What is this? War Metal??". I had a good laugh and refer to it as such to this day.
For sure. No shade on Dave Grohl, but Dale Grover is the standard to judge grunge/heavy rock drummers by. Top 3 most powerful drummers of any genre I've seen live, hands down.
Yes. Andrew totally needs the Melvins in his life. I’d love to see his reaction to the dual drummer years of Dale and Cody Willis, the latter now being the current HOF drummer.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Kurt Cobain, being from the same home town of Aberdeen, WA, was absolutely enamored with them, and followed them around for a while, even wanted to be in the band, before deciding to form Nirvana. They arent always the easiest listen, though. Like High On Fire, they were essentially a sludge band, and perhaps one of the first to be called such, but while most of the music is very similar, it can range from “slower than molasses in January” to near Hardcore Punk levels of speed. To “ease” you into them, Id say try Night Goat, Euthanasia, or Honey Bucket. Also, another Grunge band that I dont think you’ve covered yet, is Mudhoney. Before Nirvana came along and recorded their first album, Bleach, Mudhoney (and their immediate predecessor, Green River, which also spawned Mother Love Bone, which eventually became Pearl Jam) were the darlings of Seattle, and Sub Pop Records biggest sellers! They, too, occasionally can be sludgy, such as my fave song of theirs, “Sweet Young Thing Aint Sweet No More”, but really they were much closer to punk and garage, like “In ‘n’ Out Of Grace”, “Touch Me Im Sick”, and their biggest hit, (if you can call it that, having just missed out on the top 20 of the Billboard Alternative list), “Suck You Dry”.
A WALL OF GREASE AND GRIME.....HELL YES!!! Love this album the most. They are the beautiful filthy underbelly of sludge/doom/metal. It is a visceral feeling to their raw primal style. Bloody Knuckles is a great Sabbath worship track on this album.
High on Fire live are awesome. Absolute destruction. Other bands that tangentially hit similar buttons: Neurosis (tribal), Clutch (crazy understated groove), Eyehategod (turns the sludge up to 666).
Seen them once in a theater type venue in my town. The singer/guitar player had a wall of orange cabs and amps behind him (9 cabs, I think) I was told he was quite mad the venue techs prevented him from putting anymore on stage!
this would not get my attention any other day but thought , give it a shot yeh! wow , wow , scuse me while I go 'n' find my socks coz they just got blew off. WE BEEN ONSLAUGHTED . Kinda reminded me of BLUE CHEER , But sooo much better .
I agree this is one of their slowest, most crushing songs, and they have many. If you want the other extreme, I would check out the songs Luminiferous and Slave the Hive, both from their album Luminiferous which was the follow up to this album. They are fast and crushing.
Oooo please dont say post-grunge... Post-grunge is nickelback, creed, puddle of mudd dont make me list more or else i will throw up. Post-stoner or post-sludge or a mix thereof mebs.
@@spekenbonen72 yeah I'm pulling terms out of my ass here. I just took a little offense to high on fire being called post-grunge. Yeah there isn't a post-sludge or post-stoner or anything...not that I know of anyway. Just saying if post- anything it wouldn't be grunge. (Shitty dad joke inbound) Post-malone maybe. He had to have already been a basketball player before high on fire was a band right? Ok I'm being a dad joke douche. I should stop now.
Andrew needs to hear Sleep. Matt Pike was the guitarist there before forming High on Fire, and is currently with them after the reunion.
Seconded.
Yep...
I hear a lot of Celtic Frost references in this song
Yeeeeeah, baby!!!!!!
Well they did a cover of the usurper on their first album...good ear!

EXCELLENT!
I’m not big on the classification/differences of metal genres, but I usually hear HOF referred to as Sludge Metal
GREAT call

Pike is just as good here as in Sleep. Highly recommend checking out Sleep's Holy Mountain. Favorite HoF album is The Art of Self Defense
good taste
Agreed.
Saw him live a handful of times and love his tribal drumming. Dude will be missed in HOF for sure.
Matt Pike and Jeff Matz are back. With a new drummer. Check it out. 🔥
Sounds good 👀
For comparison of HOF to Grunge bands, you want the Melvins, definitely

That's a group I'm not familiar with.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Great live band, an aquired taste i admit.
Major influence and peer (not commercially) of Tool, Nirvana and Soundgarden.

I love Bloody Knuckles, interesting you'd characterize it as Sabbath worship, always sounded like a mix of Slayer/Celtic Frost to my ears
@@gratuitousfootnote1183 the riffs have that Sabbath Bloody.../ Symptoms of the Universe vibe I guess. Yours assessment is good also.
Matt Pike has more riffs than yer Mom has names of dudes that might be yer Dad.......
🤣👌
post grunge xD this is what they put nickelback in
that shit is groovy as hell

Thank you!
Always reached for Sleep over HoF but this track GOES...
High on fire rules! Thanks Andrew! The song Turk really shows off Des's skills, and killer song❤
Is this a reupload of an old video? 75k subs, when you're at 125k?
I just love that old plaque my Son made for me when I hit 75!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums has he made you one for 125k? If not, get him on to it!
the first riff is E5150 by Black Sabbath after all
THE YETI is another good one by HoF.
Heavy grungy stuff. Cool.
And they won a Grammy.
Awesome pick!

Not all post-grunge bands are shitty butt rock. I used to think so until I heard Failure's Fantastic Planet. Amazing and way ahead of its time!
