This guy's precision is unreal. When it comes to this, he and Thomas Lang are just something else.
He's a once in a generation player. One of the few players whose solos I actually get through. I adore his playing and his humility.
100% agree
That drum solo section was nuts. With his band hanging on for dear life, Gavin merrily somersaults around the groove, shuffling rhythmic modulations, moving the downbeat all around, turning it inside out, dismantling it, exploring polyrhythms, then just as their tenuous grip on the groove is about to fail, he rescues his band from the yawning abyss of rhythmic chaos and goes on his funky way like nothing happened. I just love this guy!
Haha! Yup
I have to imagine that the musicians tasked with playing comp under Gavin’s solos are well aware of where the 1 is at all times. We drummers are often charged with keeping the time, but it’s actually everyone’s responsibility. I’ve had the opportunity to play with a few really well seasoned musicians and they couldn’t be made to lose the count, which allowed me to stretch a little at times. That’s been the exception in my experience. I’m a local guy with a bit of talent on the drumkit, so I’ve played a lot. It’s pretty rare that I have an opportunity to do something creative with the time feel. I stopped arguing decades ago because I understand that the level of skill my compadres have doesn’t accommodate for a drummer who enjoys a little eighth note beat displacement from time to time, or the occasional odd note grouping. That’s fine, it’s still a lot of fun to play music without the tricks, but it definitely stifles creativity. Have you ever experienced a lead guitarists who goes for an odd phrasing, maybe on accident, and then waits for the drummer to play a phrase that sets them back in context? I’ve done that a lot. At the end of the day, it’s up to the drummer to be responsible for maintaining the flow. There’s definitely an argument to be made whether it’s a fair deal, but that’s pretty much always been the case in my view, right or wrong. I’m sure that a player like Gavin Harrison has dealt with that kind of limitation in his bandmates. Must be particularly frustrating for players like him who have the capacity to really go off the grid and do something amazing.
Smooth
And that, my friend was a very cool bit of descriptive prose.
That little double-kick syncopation through the motif is so goddamn filthy and I am INTO IT
Technically they're single kick triplets.
@@evankeal How does he even do that? Unreal.
personally i love when the groove is locked down and nice little
tasteful fills in tasteful places. this is to busy.
@@Trail_Explores Yep, uses it way way too much. Nice skills, poor taste...
Gavin is always a joy to watch. Super creative while being effortless, funky, clean, and in the pocket. You know that he prepared well for this song. Truly world class.
The keyboard player kept it together brilliantly during the drum trickery 🫡
He's so seamless it's sick. He is a true master of the art.
One of the greats
Sc@@AndrewRooneyDrums
The sound, the tastefulness, the technique, the groove is just amazing. My favourite drummer all time. Thanks! Great reaction!
I'm not a musician, I come here to listen to the best Drummers. Gavin is downright flawless.. !!
💯👌
Gavin is amazing-- he has become my favorite of all time
I think Gavin might just be my favorite prog drummer of all time. His musicality and precision is just so tasty all of the time!
I can see why Gavin Harrison has been my favorite drummer for 16 plus years now.
The most well rounded and musical drummer alive today! GOAT
Beast! 🙌
Gavin is my absolute favorite. i have never seen a drummer play the way he does. Brilliant!
Great video and reaction Andrew! Gavin Harrison is definitely one of the best drummers out there today. I became a huge fan of Gavin after seeing him drumming with Porcupine Tree on the Fear Of A Blank Planet tour. I have also seen Gavin drumming for The Pineapple Thief and for King Crimson. I have had the good fortune to meet and chat with Gavin on a couple of occasions after shows. He is a very kind and generous man with his time.
Those modulations were off every scale. Wow. And what a bass player he's grooving with there! Insane pocket. Insane groove(s). And Gaving makes it sound like it's so darn easy. I feel like I have four left legs now, and all of them broken.
Every so often a drummer gives me an ear worm where hours later I can still hear it. This is one such case, thank you so much for reacting to this Andrew. Time now to dig out more Barrie "Barriemore" Barlow.. 👍
Gavin will be in Seattle in December with PineApple Thief, not only do I have tickets, but I bought the VIP package and get to meet the band prior to the show. Can't Wait!
Get it!!!!
Let us know how it was
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Will do, I have seen Gavin with PT 4 times, Pineapple Thief twice and King Crimson twice... He is my all time favorite drummer.
I bought the VIP package for TPT last time they were in Portland and watched the whole show 8 feet from his kit. Incredible doesn't even come close. And he's a nice guy. I have been seriously thinking about doing it again at this upcoming Seattle show...
I was there! gavin and the whole band were pure class.
One reason why I think his kit always sounds good is that in one interview I saw him say that he realized that the audience always hears him play through microphones, whether live or in the studio. So he set out to learn as much as he could about mics and their placement. Really great insight. Playing with how his playing sounds to his audience rather than himself.
Great insights
The fact that he plays top of the line Sonor drums has a lot to do with how good they sound.
Gavin is one of my favorite drummers, his precision is just mind blowing! It feels like you can take a ruler and meassure every hit with milimetrical accuracy... If I could choose a Drum teacher, he would be my first option.
Gavin demonstrated in just one song many of his concepts that he is known for - over the bar line playing, odd grouping phrases, tom melodies, implied rhythmic modulation and illusions. Studying any one of these concepts would open doors to creativity. Studying them all (well) makes next level improvements.
So tasty, so musical!! And he made it look so easy, what makes it so fantastic and fun. I hate when musicians make the audience feel how technically difficult their part is.
Andrew, thanks for introducing me to Gavin Harrison! I'm not a drummer but I very much appreciate when you introduce me to amazing musicians like him! Really inspiring & makes me want to play drums myself.
Go and do it!

Thanks Andrew, for bringing us both phenomenal material like this, and the best "Dad Music Memes".
Gavin's work as a part of a trio of drummers in King Crimson was absolutely spectacular.
It seldom happens that a performance makes me throw up a little into my own mouth but this was such an occasion.
I really love syncopated, complex patterns but when he whipped out those three modulated grooves near the beginning; that's when it happened!
King Sir Gavin is truly one of the all-time greats, for sure.
Incredible player
I was lucky to be at this.was a great evening.it even had Ben thatcher playing along to easy lover by Phil Collins!
Great track!
Love ur expressions every time Gavin Harrison does that lovely triplet bass drum groove
Gav's a craftsman. He's been working since he was a kid, pretty much like Sucherman, Carey, etc & they honed their sound in their younger years. This is nice progressive funk.
Yup he's one of the best to do it
That second fill in that final solo trade with the double bass, was freakin amazing!
Yup!
Two of my favorite Gavin things ..1. During his Pasic 2008 performance of Slippin Away.He does a fill near the beginning of the song.He just lays both stick tip into his first rack tom then proceeds to drag them onto the the second and third toms down to the floor tom. It is so cool, like a drunk guy doing a fill that is about to pass out and fall on the seat. 2. During that same performance he starts doing a side stick beat. While doing so he starts playing ghost note tapping drum patterns with 2-3 of his fingers that are holding the side stick.Tapping quickly on the snare head inbetween the side sticks rim hits.
Yeah this guy is amazing. He makes it look so easy but the best performers/athletes/etc always do!
You nailed it.
Pros make it look and sound easy
That's just ridiculous. The snare sound is off the charts! I love it! ❤
I actually went to see him live , he did a big band version of one of my favourite songs..not only his sound but the accuracy.Enjoyed myself so much
That snare tone is what I hear in my dreams. Just so good. 🔥🔥
And he gets it every hit!
I watched this in my car and when he was done I got out and gave him a standing ovation.
The correct thing to do!
I enjoyed your reaction, Andrew! It's the element of surprise with which Harrison always delivers. He's an architect on drums. I've seen him 20+ times live now and he manages to never play a song exactly the same. If you'd like to listen to more of his amazing stuff, you can check out Sanity and Gravity and Cheating the Polygraph. Both are solo albums and the last mentioned contains re-arranged Porcupine Tree songs wrapped in a big band style jacket. Veeeery exiting stuff! His collaboration albums with 05Ric and Antoin Fafard are also worth checking out.
-
So no need to worry Andrew, I'm on your promote-gavin-harrison-team before you even mentioned it! 😁
Really appreciate the insight about the fundamentals at the end. It's something I noticed with Sugarfoot Moffett as well. The beats he plays are "simple", but there's an otherworldly quality to it that I couldn't find the words for. Gavin has that too in spades.
People left the clinic feeling like they have been to the shower because gavins drumming is so clean
🧼 🙌
Seen him live 4 times, 3 with The Pineapple Thief and 1 with Porcupine Tree and it is incredible!
Cheers, Andrew! I'm glad you enjoyed this as much as I thought you would. I totally agree with you -- if you have a chance to see Gavin play, GO!! I went to see the Porcupine Tree tour, and spent a mint on a front-row seat right in front of Gavin. What a night!! And I owe it to you for introducing me to his playing with your Sound of Muzak reaction!
That's so good to hear Mike!
Yup I think it's really worth it. One of the best to pick up sticks
Whole band was superb here too
I was honored and blessed as well to see Gavin live! He’s definitely my drum god.
The best version of Pick Up the Pieces I have ever heard!!
That's Gavin for ya!
The way he moves through the different time signatures underneath the band shows an insane understanding of meter & rhythm. I was right there with you, Andrew, when you said, "How's he gonna remember the original?" Great reaction.
I was lucky enough to be at this gig at the Clapham Grand. Gav was just epic as always and completely in a league of his own. Feel very privileged to be there
One of the great things about your take on GH is your own sense of wonderment. That you don't 'compete' with GH, but rather -- what's the word -- celebrate his gifts. Well played, sir.
I’ve seen Gavin 5 times. First at a clinic, twice with Pineapple Thief, once with King Crimson and, a wish come true, with Porcupine tree. All but King Crimson I had to travel to see him. Such a unique, amazing musician. Worth every effort to witness.
Love how they execute the fills I can’t even think of ❤️❤️❤️
I was hoping you would check this out. I never expected to hear Gavin do a funk rhythm, but this is exactly as I would have guessed it would be like.
So tight, so funky, whole band in the pocket😎 hell yeah
Sooooo good
I'm no musician, but Gavin is my personal GOAT drummer. I don't normally gravitate to the drummer in bands, but whenever Gavin is playing, I cannot take my eyes off him. He never fails to impress, but it never feels like he's trying to impress. He does all these crazy things, but it's always very tasteful and kind of understated.
I used to watch Gavin do drum clinics back in the early 80's at my local music shop, he was a monster even back then...
Saw him finally with KC... I think a lot of people were blown away when this somewhat unknown drummer showed up on Letterman's drum feature. series...
Absolute beast
I first saw Gavin when he was 18 in NYC and the touring drummer for Renaissance. He took my breath away then.
The Annie Haslem Renaissance?
@@darylfoster7944 Yes!
My buddy and I just picked up a kit for his 8 year old son for Christmas. I hope he runs with it and becomes a monster drummer like this guy.
Way ahead of you. The Pineapple Thief coming to Dallas in December and we got tickets the day they went on sale. Saw them last time they came through Austin and they were sooo good
I bet!
I was fortunate enough to catch a Pineapple Thief gig in Bristol UK a few months ago and was pretty much 10ft from Gavin immediately stage RHS - I have to say, honestly one of the most amazing live drum experiences I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing, a genuine GOAT.
Neil Peart is the GOAT
@@KimDuty-i8e well, for me Neil was the greatest drummer for Rush, really not so versatile across genres. He may be the most popular drummer, for for me - not the greatest. A good debate however.
Smooooooooooooovvvvvv. Dude's the smoothest traps man I've ever seen.
Crazy good!
Love your channel. I used to play drums in a basement band. I can't decide if your channel inspires to pick it up again or say I'm not worthy😂
Go for it!
Dude is millimetrically perfect 🤌
Love watching Gavin drumming. Seen him live many times with Porcupine Tree, Pineapple Thief and King Crimson. Last time I saw him was with Pineapple Thief at a moderate sized venue in Bristol UK and I was thinking that there didn’t seem enough folk there to appreciate his mastery!!
This is great but you simply can’t ignore the greatness of Robbie on the original 🤘🏻
Spot on....this may be funkily good, but there's stuff in here that (to me) is over played. Robbie Mc played it as he heard it!
That performance was…”rude, crude, down and dirty, mean and clean”….😂😂😂OMG what did i just witness…i think i just had my first eargasm ever😂
I went to a Gavin Harrison clinic about 10-11 years ago. He was amazing of course. But before the clinic, I really had to hit the restroom, and walking to the door was almost bowled over by someone leaving. It was Gavin. He apologized. I realized who it was and just looked at him and said, "GAVIN."
🤯
I think that is the best drumming I have ever heard!!
The drumming, the song. Perfectttt
Yup!
Yep, I agree that you should drop everything to see him live if you can. A friend and I are driving to Seattle (from Portland) this December in order to see him [again] with The Pineapple Thief. Almost made the trip to SF Bay area to see Porcupine Tree in Sept 2022 but just couldn't make it happen - major regret.
Holy crap, amazing. Love Gavin's work.
Me too!
I j ust saw The Pineapple Thief in a small venue outside Pittsburgh on a bitter cold November night. There must have been no more than 300 people there and Gavin and the guys never let up and the tiny crowd was grateful and I'm soo very glad I went.
I love the sound of properly tuned sonor tom toms.
That really cool double stroke with the bassdrum I first heard in "We need the money" by Chuck Brown. Very refreshing and surprising. I could play it 25 years ago... :D
That dude is filthy good. Great breakdown. Sub’d!
Adds a new meaning to "heal and toe."
🤣🤣
This sounds so superb🎉👍🎶🖖
Yup love it!
Great drummer and a really nice guy.
Saw GH with King Crimson many times. He really did make it look easy. Reminded me of Bill Bruford .
Yup that's a smart comparison
Bruford is probably my fave drummer and I love Harrison (seen him multiple times with Crimson), but I hear very few similarities between the two, other than the fact that they are world-class musicians.
This level of funkiness cannot be measured and is unfair, so epic!!
Precision musicality attack direction simply everything brilliant ... 😊😅😂😊😊😊😊
10:45 thats the message.. i scraped the side of my car on the way to see a gavin harrison clinic and it was still one of the better days in my life 😂
Something to remember it by
see him with PT abt 10 years ago,,, mindblowing
I was hoping you'd react to this video! This made my night
I think I injured something just listening.....Gavin is so damn COLD....
Bloody hell Andrew! This was phenomenal!!!
What a wonderful reaction..fantastic drumming
7:49 I love when he goes nuts with those little splashes!
Does anyone know who's the Bassist there?
He's killing it too!
Yeah not sure on bassist. Whole band is mad good
Thanks a lot Gavin 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙏🙏🙏🙏🤜❤️🔥🤛 🎉
Fortunate enough to see Gavin with Porcupine Tree and Pineapple Thief. Took my son too who was just blown away by how good he is
The band were amazing in that section near the end keeping the timing. Must have had a click track in ear
Killer players! 💯🤘
Have to give this the honorary horns 🤘
Do it! lol
Gavin used to rehearse in a studio I ran so I just stood by the door listening all the time. The precision of this guys playing is insane !! Apparently people set their metronome to gavin rather than the other way round XD
Any time I'm listening to a band with Gavin, I have a confession: I'm always actually listening to just Gavin... 🙂 the other players don't have a chance LOL
It's so perfect it hurts.
Saw him yesterday in Montreal with Pinapple Thief, a masterclass!
I always love your breakdowns at the end of the videos I watch of yours.. I'm not a drummer but a music lover who listens to everything that is being played by the whole band so I pick up on that sort of stuff like Gavin when my mind was blown after hearing my first Porcupine Tree song... It was about 4 years ago now and of course it was Anaesthetise...!! And I was 66 at the time. I came away wondering how the hell I had never heard of this band before.... Of course I caught up fairly quickly and now have more PT and Steven Wilson records that my favourites The Beatles... Lol... ANYWAY... I guess I was trying to get to the fact that I am a little stuck in my ways too, even though I am not a musician... I will readily listen to anything from the UK... But Have yet to actively go and listen to a Rush song for instance or Tool... Even though I know in my heart that they are brilliant... I just had the bad luck to be born in the era of Ringo Starr & Keith Moon & Charlie Watts & Nick Mason & Phil Collins (the Genesis drummer Phil)... & Kenny Jones & Ian Paice & Bill Ward & Bill Brufford & Alan White & Jim Keltner & Steve Gadd & Bernard Purdie & ANY drummer attached to a Steely Dan record.
Sorry for rambling but I do proise to try and do better.... Keep on Rocking young sir.
Go check out Andrew's reaction to Danny Carey playing "Pneuma". That was my Tool introduction, and I'm hooked.
@@MikeKobb Thanks... I will do.
Have had the privilege of seeing Gavin 3 times with Porcupine Tree and once with King Crimson.
He is an amazing drum!
Andrew as great as this is you've missed the supreme GH drum video.... "King Crimson - Indiscipline - Live in Mexico City" here on YT
He is on tour with Pineapple Thief over next few months
lesgoooooo!!!❤🔥
Thanks for that! Just picked up a ticket.
Great band, The Pineapple Thief! Saw them in Nashville with Gavin in 2022! 👍🍻👍
igot frikin chills man!!
Yup just crazy pocket
Insane snaredrum sound 🥁
A perfect example of how the discipline of mastering technique allows for performance freedom. It appears that whatever came into his head he could do and that is true freedom.
Never heard of this guy but woah. Best thing I can say is that it sounded completely effortless, like he was just sitting at home exploring his kit.
Yup. Smashed it
