I would have thought he would have on a KU 🏀 Jersey since hes known to wear the Jersey of the professional basketball teams anywhere tool plays. This is a great video. As someone who actually played drums in the high school band, this is how we did sporting events at school. Nobody in the band was 🎤ed. Including the drum kit. I would imagine that they do it the same way in the US as we do in Canada.
so, something my dad taught me, he was one of buddy rich's 1 on 1 students, when buddy used to hold those classes teaching kids how to play. anyways, he taught me that when you understand the dynamics of how both heads on a drum reverberate, having them so that the bottom will always be directly opposite to the top as they vibrate when you hit them, it gives your set a "cannon" like feel to it, because you're always going to be hitting the heads so that they push the most air possible when they reverberate after being hit, and sound is nothing more than air being compressed until it runs out of momentum. thats why some sets are just loud, and others you can feel punch through your chest when you listen. thought someone would find this little knowledge passed onto me as interesting as i always have.
Danny Carey is from Kansas, and this is the KU "pep band" - a shrunken version of a university marching band, which usually plays outdoors at football games, for indoor use at basketball games. It's a big part of college sports culture in America. The KU pep band has also invited Chad Smith to play the same song before - there's a clip out there.

I went to KU and Danny is a legend. He loves KU (university) and Kansas City sports like people love Manchester United. Just a dude who loves jamming and loves his home sports teams.
Andrew, they don't typically mic up the drum kits at college basketball games which is why you have to hit the drums so damn hard. I used to play the kit for my old college team's games (Southeastern Louisiana University) and we didn't mic anything. However, we did have an electric bass and guitar setup (with big amps) along with my drums, an additional conga player, and the typical horn section...Great times!
Danny Carey is a Lawrence, KS native and lifelong Jayhawk. In the States this is a "Pep Band". Very common at high school and college sporting events. I played trumpet in several when I was younger and I've done live play by play of football and basketball games via radio for 15 years... and not once in at least hundreds of ball games in or outdoors have I seen anybody mic'd up who's instrument wasn't already plugged into wall. The only way the sound is bad is if the band's no good. The mix is perfect to not have to mic the drums. High ceilings in a basketball gym. Great acoustics. Drums and brass were born for to live and eat in those venues. I've actually seen drum kits at basketball games muted with those plexiglass shields.
Funny story...It has been said in the media that after this "performance" Danny Carey got arrested for "assault" in a altercation he had with a police/security officer. He looked a bit intoxicated in the photos I saw, but I'm still waiting to hear his side of the story if/when he gives his own statement about what happened. However, I for one would find it awesome and hilarious if after this jam with the Kansas Univ. band that he drank a few too many beers while watching the game and then got in a little tussle with an airport security "rent-a-cop". LOL! 🙂 I can't wait to hear what Danny has to say about it.

What's unfortunate is that most people who were there probably had no idea who he was.

As others have mentioned...Danny was born in Lawrence, home of KU (University of Kansas) and grew up in a small town east of there called Paola. This was the border war game, between KU and Mizzou, which hasn't been played since Missouri left the Big 12 conference. KU absolutely killed MU in the game, but this is the highlight for me! To see Danny doing his thing on a small kit totally impromptu, look for him playing "The Pot" with a kids talent show band.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Silly me...I have of course watched that! On a side note, DC got himself into a bit of trouble leaving Kansas City the other night and was arrested at the airport. :(
So you're reaction is the 2nd time I've listened to this performance. Carey is great as always, and really rose to the lame gear situation with aplomb. But after two listens I'm callin' it, those horn players fucking blew the pooch. They were hitting tons of wrong notes, blatting, and just coming in and cutting off super weak. Clarinets were pretty shit too. I know it's lame to call out fails in public, but great jebus, that was rough. It's maybe just imagination, but I think they knew it was really possible that this was going to go viral with Carey there, and they choked.

My girlfriend is a huge DMB fan. I can't say that I am though...I have a lot of respect for them as musicians and Dave is a great guy, but their music just doesn't do it for me...and their fans are insufferable, lol.
No reason to get angry. He's great. It's just like, as poppy and teen angsty as John Mayer is on his albums, he's one hell of a guitar player live.
I'm surprised the kit didn't fall apart
HAHA
26th??? Lmao...more like #1. He's on a pedestal all his own.
Rolling Stone Magazine is a joke.
@@MrDuanepalmer True. Anybody putting DC in that spot is high on something.
Impossible to rank drummers. But he has left a massive mark/legacy on drumming/music forever
No one gonna mention oboe boy in the background playing through his covid mask?!
There are not 25 people on earth who can beat those drums better than Danny
Danny went to The University of Missouri-Kansas City, fyi, all cocky KU fans💯
Was this the gig just before he got arrested?
Please react Austin Archey from Lorna Shore🔥🤘
Crazy he got arrested at the airport after playing this.
Danny got arrested in the Airport after this.
I've done a vid on The Pot with the younger kids! AWESOME
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Silly me...I have of course watched that!
On a side note, DC got himself into a bit of trouble leaving Kansas City the other night and was arrested at the airport. :(
Next reaction: New Kendedes - Kidung Wahyu Kolosebo
Thanks
Thanks for the tip!
Have you ever checked out Danny's side project Volto? Very jazzy ua-cam.com/video/FoMhucdn_a8/v-deo.html
Yes I did a video on it Ed!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums the "in a silent way" video?
I meant the song Tocino, or the link I posted to bhp/ glitz 👍
He studied music at KU
Incorrect. He attended UMKC.
Danny Fkn Carey!
YES SIR!
I think he got arrested at the airport after an altercation
Like Andrew said: Danny Carey looks REALLY FRICKEN WEIRD on a normal kit!
🤣👌
The kit also looks tiny 'cause Danny is 6'4
So you're reaction is the 2nd time I've listened to this performance.
Over heads?
I think there's nothing!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums he is abusing the shit out of that kit. But Tbf he’s a known heavy hitter and in his own words… I have my hihats on remote and in the middle so I can wail on my snare harder::..
