    VW owes one sale to you. I was going to hold my nose on the CVT and buy the Subaru...until I watched the drag race vid on the Alltrack v the Subaru. Love my Alltrack

    Sweet Wagon!!! VW did a damn good job with this one. I test drove one today and was impressed with refinement, power, and handling. Something the Outback no longer has.

    With Volkswagen's 4Motion cars, you need to press on the gas for the Awd system to send power, it does not work by barely pressing the gas pedal and waiting. 4Motion splits 90/10 on most occasions but will transfer power to any wheel who needs it.(haldex) a very efficient AWD,that allows you to move well in light,medium off road and snow/ice.

    • @JM-nz8gw
      @JM-nz8gw 7 років тому +5

      It's the same Haldex in the Audi quattro system. I have my Audi TT with it and it works well, but like you said, you gotta press the gas and wait for it to come on.

    • @mc_sim
      @mc_sim 7 років тому +2

      not all audi quattro systems based on haldex. only on a1/a3/tt/q2/q3. eg. mqb platform. the rest use torsen.

    • @intrepidmilotic5999
      @intrepidmilotic5999 7 років тому

      Maxim L. yes most of the more expensive Audi and Volkswagen are Torsen regardless of the naming 4Motion or Quattro like the Touareg or Q5.

    • @intrepidmilotic5999
      @intrepidmilotic5999 7 років тому +2

      pikepeak1 Haldex Gen5 should be enough unless you will go into heavy off roading, in addition you should not floor it, you should hit the gas hard enough for momentum and 4Motion will start switching power and Traction between your tires.

    • @makimoko
      @makimoko 7 років тому +1

      Audi will be changing their Torsen based AWD for electronically controlled, Haldex-like clutches. It starts with the new B9 A4 and will continue to the other vehicles, exception made of RS models. Look up the « Quattro with Ultra » system, which is essentially a FWD biased part-time AWD. Looks like true permanent AWD is getting extinct...

      Just helped my parents purchase a new 2017. They had the A3 tdi with the S line package and the two sunroofs. We loved this car. There really was nothing comparable to it on the market when we bought it. Then the tdi foolishness happened. We bought the car used for 25K in August 2015 and Audi is going to buy it back for over 33K. So not a bad deal.
      They got a new Alltrack SEL with every bell and whistle. originally 36K and purchased for 26K. It is a great car. Again, I don't think there is anything comparable to it on the market. There are only a few wagons from which to chose in the US, and none in this price range with that massive, and I do mean MASSIVE sunroof.

    whats funny is that this is pretty much the same exact idea as the AMC Eagle wagon.
    except the Eagle could drive on a real off road trail. all it needed was lockers in the axles and it would've walked that trail as easily as a parking lot full of speed bumps.
    i wouldn't mind that AWD system if it was faster at adapting to different grip situations rather than taking an entire 5 seconds to realize a wheel is in the air

    Subaru Outback does come to mind for competing with this Golf All-Track, with similar price range, standard Symmetrical AWD, X-Mode, and available 6-cylinder Boxer engine. The 6-cylinder Boxer engine only gives up 3 MPG overall compared to the Golf All-Track, but the 4-cylinder Outback is more fuel-efficient with less horsepower. The Outback will of course be reliable, despite having a CVT.

    No an Outback isn’t a crossover. It’s just a lifted stationwagon with more off-road/rugged styling. It’s essentially a lifted Legacy wagon with a facelift also.
    WTF is that “I’m stuck” comment ½ a second after losing traction?? Seriously. You’re not stuck just because you spin a wheel or lose traction momentarily. You apply some juice and the Haldex system will move you on.

  • @mikeh0222
    @mikeh0222 7 років тому +2

    From the looks of it the AWD system takes a while to finally send power to the rear wheels. At least form those short clips it doesn't inspire confidence if it is needed in ice and snow and it doesn't have the same amount of time to make a decision. I'd like to see a snow setting and the off-road setting automatically send 50/50 power when selected.

    • @davidmcleod5133
      @davidmcleod5133 3 роки тому +1

      I know I’m replying to this comment long after it’s relevant, but you were correct... it isn’t all that great in snow. I drove an 03 WRX on summer tires one time that did better in the slippery stuff, than my Alltrack does on all-seasons it came with. And to me, it’s due to the difference between full-time AWD, and power-transfer AWD; by the time the car’s detected slippage, it’s too late.

    I’m looking to buy one of these as I can’t find a new wagon with a manual transmission. I was kinda horrified by the poor AWD performance compared to my ‘07 Forester, but the comments seem to agree that slippage actually has to occur before the system can transfer torque. I am consistently aware of the individual tire grip on the Forester with its viscous center diff and mechanical limited rear diff and no traction control features. I was hoping that the AWD would prevent the modern traction control from cutting power or applying brake as I always feel these actions are counter to how I’ve already adjusted to the situation. Other than a little less power, I’m hoping for a better daily driver with better gas mileage than my Subie. 🤞

    • @brettpanzer
      @brettpanzer 2 роки тому

      The EJ253 has less power than the 1.8tsi. I traded my outback for an alltrack and I don’t miss the outback at all. The difference between Subaru CVT AWD and 4motion is almost nonexistent.

    • @sidpark1695
      @sidpark1695 2 роки тому

      @@brettpanzer Of course my Forester has the EJ255 and has more power than the 1.8 in the AllTrack.
      I did buy a low mileage 2019 (manual of course) and it is very poor performance-wise in comparison to the Foz, but I do like how quiet it is and I can get 30 mpg in it, where I can count the fill-ups that I got over 20 mpg in the Forester in 15 years on one finger.
      The handling is definitely comfort and not performance, and the rebound on the shocks is similar to a ‘70s American sedan on low frequency bumps or dips. Driving it 4000 miles so far, I reckon I’ll keep it, but I couldn’t sell my old car as the VW is so daft. I was right about the traction control and delay in both engine power and power transfer to the rear. I will try performance shocks first. But I don’t believe I will chase performance out of this car - I’ll just have to keep a second car for fun-to-drive.
      Cheers

      A loaded version of this car in Canada is over $46k with destination and taxes. For that kind of money you can buy a lightly used ANYTHING, including a Range Rover, Mercedes, Audi, or what have you. This VW has limited headroom for tall people, rock hard seats, and so-so MPG. Not to mention, VW has had many issues with their 1.8L turbo engines burning oil. Pass.

Why? Are you against it? Last I checked in 04'-06' Volkswagen spent quite a bit of R&D time making it pretty competent off-road(at least for the Mk1 which Americans can still buy brand new from Osnabrück), even more so than this Golf with a slight lift.

      The Alltrack (and all MK7 Golfs) use the MQB platform. The US Jetta uses the previous platform (will be moved to MQB in a year or two I believe).

    With apolgies to all ... don't mean to throw cold water on all the "gushing" ... but I had a 2012 Jetta TDI SW ... and this looks pretty darn similar to my old eyes ... and they (VW) had issues getting it noticed by consumers and it sold poorly ... I can only hope they (VW) fixed some of my concerns ... very cramped rear seating ...so-so stereo (Radio III if I recall) ... DSG (seemed to lack the normal automatics torque multiplication at low speeds which you may need for offroad crawling...or for getting unstuck) .... and yes I understand the JSW was only FWD and this is AWD (sort of) ... 170HP??? ... seems a little thin ... especially if you fill it with folk-n-gear and long uphill sections ...mine had the panoramic sunroof which sounded "romantic" but was actually noisy when opened and broiled the tops of my kids heads if left uncovered ... I'm sure for VW fanatics this car is "Wunderbar", though probably a few "clicks" away from "fahrfergnunen" ...

      I agree that it's far too small to be an Outback competition, but then Crosstrek is also too small to be its competition.
      I consider a car to be a "wagon" if it's longer than the equivalent sedan. For example, Outback is longer than Legacy. Crosstrek/Impreza is merely a hatchback because it's shorter than Impreza sedan. This Golf Alltrack appears to be a proper (raised) wagon.
      If raised Levorg existed, that'd be similar, but then, Levorg isn't even available in the US/Canada (sad). And besides, Levorg would completely whip the Golf Alltrack in everything. :P

      This is one thing i don't really get. Why car makers keep doing these allroad/alltrack/cross-country vehicles. People are really buying them ? They won't see anything close to offroad anyway. And if you have to do some more than occasional offroading, why not buying a compact SUV? Like a Tiguan, which i believe it's about the same height as the alltrack golf there. I really and truly hate this type of cars because they serve no useful purpose.

    • @hirmizb
      @hirmizb 7 років тому

      This can be, however I would recommend and allroad if you have been already looking at it as the Quattro system has better technology than the 4motion, and on the allroad it's standard

    • @copbikeralex
      @copbikeralex 7 років тому +1

      The new A4/Allroad and the AWD Sportwagen/Alltrack both share the same AWD system, Haldex. Same as the Golf R, Tiguan, A3/S3, Q3/5; though there are minor tweaks here and there. Then you get Torsen AWD systems in the Touareg/Q7/larger Audi sedans. Then there is an entirely different AWD system for the R8. 4Motion and Quattro really is just marketing and branding.
      I'd say a "cheap" Audi Allroad is a great way to describe it. Less features and a little less power, but same general idea.

      Francois DuJour I know this comment is old but I figured I would share that the all road and the alltrac are two completely different cars. Different engines, transmissions and AWD systems. The all road is an actual Quattro system. Also while Audi and VW are part of the same company, the interior styling of the two are not similar in any way.

    It is a cool wagon. But i wouldnt say its a station wagon. Atleast when i think station wagon I think an old b body chevy caprice wagon or the old pontiac wagons. Full size and rwd. I find that a station wagon. This is a mid size wagon id say. But still cool nonetheless. I like wagons personally better than crossovers. I think it be cooler if more manufacturers brought back the full size wagon. Like something the size of the new chevy ss but in wagon form. That would be interesting to see.

    I was going to get an '18 Crosstrek, but Subaru did nothing with the god awful engine. In my '16 Crosstrek, I feel like I am going to die whenever I merge onto the highway or pull into traffic. It is awful, slow, and unresponsive. The Alltrack is looking more and more like my next car. It is slightly more expensive, but what you get for that couple thousand more seems to make up for the price difference in droves.

    Hhhmmm... I have a 2008 Subaru WRX 5 door. I want another wagon that is AWD and I'd buy another Subaru but they make them all way too high. The VW is very appealing to me but... 170 hp? My WRX has 228 so I think I'd be disappointed in the power difference however, the thing that makes me question the VW's AWD vs my Subaru is how the tires were spinning on the dirt road in this video. I'm going to have to take the VW fAlltrack or a test drive in the wet and punch it off the line. I'm afraid I'm going to be really let down in what they call AWD. I thought I had found a replacement for my Subaru WRX in this but, this video tells me probably not.

      VW's AWD is definitely not as grippy as Subaru's good oldschool tech. 90/10 until it thinks something else is needed pales in comparison to Subi's pretty even split right off the bat. People keep calling VW's AWD the same as Audi's Haldex stuff, and a lot of people have said it's a pretty dang good AWD system, though I'm no car expert, so I can't say much about how accurate either of those points are.
      Nor have I really gotten either car I've owned in a tough off road situation. I bought a 2017 Alltrack to replace a crashed '15 Impreza 5D. The interior is far better, and it has noticeably better ground clearance (at least it feels like it), though the AWD system even on the road feels a bit lesser. That said, it seems to have a lot more getup and go, although that could be that I have a manual with the VW, so it's me controlling it and not some damn economical computer.
