I really appreciate all the work you guys at tfl do to show us the capabilities of these vehicles.
No doubt they did a fine job to show cars capability but they choose the wrong VW model.. for this comparison they should get the Passat Alltrack.. ;0)
@@poplaurentiu4148 late reply but the Passat Alltrack is not available for the United States not sold here
Volkswagen is such a capable vehicle. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. Good stuff.
All I got from this mashup is that Nathan can't drive stick. Hah.
Frank White 3 minutes into the video and i already know that too
Frank White awful lol
even at a simple 0-60
You gents consistently have the most interesting, informative reviews. Keep it comin'
Finally. :-) Thank you guys for a great video
Dude doesnt know how to drive manual
Interesting video guys! But it is important to note these cars are for snow roads not mountain climbing, more for commuting. So you have more choice than just Subaru. Too bad you don't get the A6 Allroad in USA. Or SEAT. Or Škoda. :-D
madant1977 we did get the A6 All Road for a couple of years I believe, not anymore though
By 2022, we will have the A6 allroad in the U.S. in addition to the A4 allroad we already have.
For the 2020 model year the A6 Allroad is available in the US.
Keep up the good work! Love your videos!
Andre with the "That's what she said" joke. Priceless.
Great video guys!
I want a full review of that manual Alltrack! Please?
I'm here for the Alltrack...What terrain setting were each car in for the respective tests? Quattro ultra is not that ultra, as others have said...think Quattro-lite.
Great review! Love my VW Alltrack
i love the Switzerland trails area. Beautiful video
Another great video. What are your thoughts on a Sportwagon with AWD, vs the VW Alltrack? In 90% city driving in the Midwest so the only real need for AWD is winter months. My bigger concern is it being a fun to drive practical vehicle. Lotta roundabouts in my city that are a blast to zip through.
I would say sportwagen lower ride height mean and feels more nimble not by that much probaly but certainly more, but if i recall coreectly the transmission are different, I think you get a regular 6 speed auto instead of a dual clutch and i believe some safety tech is not avaliable on the Alltrack, correct me if im wrong someone, i have taken a look at the updated 2018 versions.
The biggest thing in my opinion is that the Alltrack has a significantly nicer interior than the Sportwagen. Either one would be a really interesting platform for mods, especially with a 6MT.
Love it! Got my alltrack last year, so far so good.
I've never been drawn too hard to vw, but that wagon is awesome! I had to say that because It means a lot for me to say that. It would be a serious contender if I had to start looking for a newer vehicle now. I'll have to remember it when used prices come down. Good luck with yours!
Is it fun to drive day to day around town? Did you consider the regular Sportwagon before going with the Alltrack?
Josh Kelnhofer yes it's very fun. Low end torque makes it an enjoyable driver. And yes I did consider it because its a great way to save a couple thousand, The dealer just didn't have the package i wanted.
I considered it but it was 36K to get it similarly equipped to the Outback Limited I end up buying for 6K less. Maybe that’s why I’ve seen like 3 Alltracks in the Pacific North West - am area where Subies dominate.
George T. Intersting. I can't stand subarus horrible interior and bad driving dynamics. But congrats on the new car. I love the Pacific northwest
Thanks for the video. I also own a 2019 vw alltrack. Really love awd with the manual transmission. The 4motion works great. It has no issues navigating Snowy mountain roads in Colorado and for the money I think its a very great car. If you are a fan of german machines. I think the all road is a beautiful machine. But your average family man like me the volkswagen is alot more practical for the money spent.
Just bought a 2018 CPO A4 allroad good through Oct. 30 2024 and 120,000 KM, has squeaky clean Carfax. 37,000 KM. For you milers, aboot (hehe since I live in the GWN) 23,000 miles. With tax and fees, just under CAD$50,000.00, and we certainly pay taxes here and its a privilege. This is your suggestion from a three year old video. Thanks for this. You guys are great!
Were you using the “off-road” mode for the Alltrack? It makes a big difference. You demonstrated this when you guys originally tested the Alltrack.
I'm really enjoying your videos and the work that you put into it. P.S Nathan please please please take care of your health. moderate exercise and clean diet!
Quattro Ultra is basically a cheapened version of the previous Quattro. Clearly demonstrated by the lack of rear power transfer when actually needed. Purely FWD until AWD is required!
How much difference is there really between the regular A4 allroad TDI and a A4 allroad 3.0 ? big difference ?
own one, love it. no manual cept flippers. dig that aspect too. its fun off the line. it gets going. love the 4motion always.
Is this the first year Audi started using this new AWD system in the Allroad? Thanks for the video.
"See, that's what I was worried about" Just feather the clutch man when revs drop, but dont ride it ffs.
You guys should try the Q5 and Q7 up gold mine hill
Love my Golf Alltrack (3 pedal version with a JB1 piggyback chip installed)
For sure! A stage 1 tuned Alltrack with DSG will definitely be just as fast, if not faster than a stock Allroad.
Really these two cars aren’t in the same class, the VW Golf Alltrack is based on the MQB chassis, where as the Audi A4 Allroad is based on the MLB chassis which is a class up size-wise in chassis and in overall dimensions and is also much heavier and uses a longitudinally mounted engine set up over the MQB’s Transverse engine set up which also lends to two completely different all wheel drive systems (front wheel drive adapted into all wheel drive system which electronically sends power to the rear vs. a mechanical all wheel drive system that now has an electronic coupler to disconnect the rear when cruising). I do understand their reasoning behind the transmission choice for the Allroad as generally manual is regarded as the better transmission choice for off-roading but just like they said the manual in the Alltrack is built for economy not off-roading so it wouldn’t actually be an advantage and if they would’ve chose the other transmission choice it would’ve been a dual clutch transmission as well just a 6 speed instead of 7 speed.
Chris Lim Obviously that’s the point. They wanted to see how close they were even though they aren’t in the same class, yet identical design briefs.
The MQB is a newer platform as well. The engine they have in the Allroad is the same one the Golf GTI uses. Really similar idea anyways. RS3 uses MQB too.
That’s why the video is called a mashup.
But they're both awd wagons... and I'm in the market for either one, and that's why I'm here
@The Fast Lane Car
When are you going to drag race a 2018 Accord Touring 2.0T and a 2018 Toyota Camry XSE V-6? There has been a lot of back and forth between fanboys on which is faster.
Is it the Accord with less HP and more torque with a quick shifting 10-speed auto? Or is it the Camry with more HP and less torque and a slow shifting 8-speed auto?
So the Quattro ultra decouples the rear when awd is not needed. Alltrack does the same. Both are Haldex units. Hmmmm....sounds like the same system to me (although I'm sure programming logic would be different). If anyone has actual proof one way or the other...please share!
Well to start, one engine is transverse, the other is longitudinal. Obviously has to be different.
2 completely different AWD systems. Haldex and Quattro.
Allroad was traditionally Torsen no?
When are you going to take Andrew's outback up Gold Mine hill?
I know I am a little late to the conversation here, but the 0 to 60 time should be done by the same person so there is as little human error as possible as the 2 people drive differently. Also the Altrack was minimum half a second off from its actual 0 to 60 speed of 7.5. I have been lucky enough to get mine as low as 7.25 with my 2017stock Alltrack automatic. I am very pleased with my Alltrack, it feels extremly zippy on the highway, much more so than my former 2016 chevy cruze that I had before it.
I agree the guy in the All track was a Goober... Aw shucks... Oops whoops... Uh oh...
Came here just to say Happy Valentine's Day
Rdrummer 2 Happy Single Awareness Day!
Double JJ Wut??
Rdrummer 2 My meteorologist said today is Single Awareness Day. Had a good laugh about it.
Double JJ oh XD
Put an IS20 turbo from a GTI on that Alltrack, and it'd be at least as fast as the Audi, maybe faster. Those little 1.8T engines are surprisingly impressive.
No hill assist on the golf? My 2016 GTI base model has it, weird.
It does have hill hold. Least the 2019 Alltrack I test drove had it.
Hey they passed Nutnfancy on the way up the moutain...
WoodshavenPatriot really?
You guys know a lot about cars and your reviews are usually very good. Until any of you sit behind the wheel, then it's cringe after cringe after cringe....
I like the shirt Nathan :)
Try the Buick Tour X !!! Please.
Bury that redline, Nathan. Alltrack don't care!
Isn't VW based on the Haldex AWD system while Allroad is Torsen which is considered much more reliable..? At least I think this was traditionally the case but perhaps this is no longer the case.
It depends on production year, engine/transmission and market. There are A4's Allroad with torsen or with quattro ultra.
I love the all track
Nathan is such a grump! :)
Andre needs to learn how to left foot brake, right foot gas.
I like nathan's assessment at the end. the VW is a great entry level vehicle.
Here in Europe, the Golf Alltrack has a 2.0 liter diesel. However, the manual has 150hp, whereas the automatic has 180hp, which is really a shame for manual lovers.
I would take the DSG. Changes gear much better than I ever did.
Why not a diesel for offroad?
Well gentlemen, I just bought a 2018 A4 allroad with 34,000km. You guys can figure out what that is in American. CPO to October 2024 or 120,000km. And I promise you that it will not see anything even close to Stage 2. This is not the the design for it but nice to see you test those limits. We have vehicles that can crush Stage 3 but really, I need to buy some property in CO, build a home then invite the cars. Might invite you guys as well!
13:01 - 13:07 "That's what she said". HAHA
I just love the fact that VAG is recognising that the C5 Allroad was a car worthy of emulation. What other car maker so blatantly builds and improves upon it's history.
This was fun to watch. Curious how the Outback 3.6R compares to these two.
Well the Alltrack is faster and drives better than the 3.6R. We drove a 3.6 for a week and the VW is simply the better car and MUCH more affordable.
Why comparing a manual with a dual clutch ? Why didn't you choose both dual clutch transmissions?
Lucas Côté It's a mashup video. The cars are supposed to be different. It's not a 1:1 comparison.
Holy shit you can buy that with a real manual?!?!
Shane Martin duh
Chase Short with so many manufacturers doing away with manuals surprised me to see a manual on something other than an entry level cheap car
Yes and it's one reason it's probably my top choice so far for a winter/utility/commute vehicle to supplement my 1 series
Can’t help but think the Quattro ultra system hindered it here since the regular Quattro in the a4 is mechanical and truly full time.
You keep driving into the hole?
Regarding the comments on impressive high altitude 0-60 times...The turbocharger compensates for the lower air density at altitude. With a naturally aspirated engine, you'll lose approx. 3% of your engine's power output per 1k ft of elevation gain. A turbocharged engine, in contrast, can modulate boost pressure to compress more air and compensate for the power loss (within the limits of air volume/intake capacity/maximum turbo shaft speed)
TL;DR turbo engines lose less power at altitude compared to non-turbo engines
You must test the SKODA Octavia scout to the gold mind hill , I believe that kind of vehicles are the best. Boxy suv,s suck on the road and on the off road aren’t a lot better than off road wagons.
Andriy my Russian brother, always a pleasure to watch the episode when you’re on :)
This isn't a fare comparison for the slow climbing sections manual (VW) vs DSG (Audi) would have been better if both were DSG equipped cars. Smelling clutch burning not a good thing.
$26K price difference WOW! VW is better bang for the buck IMO. I wish VW would abandon the halogen headlights LED headlights are only available in the SEL
They both need to provide more engine options...there's like 5 or 6 in Europe!
Great review guys! Now, in the GWN at 230'ish meters above SL, and certainly more capable off-roaders in our fleet, we bought the allroad last month. Nice CPO. We first bought a used 2002 A6 allroad, then a 2006 A6 Avant that wouldn't even do the entrance to Stage 1 and not by a long shot. Maybe not even the parking lot. Had it for 13 years and 300,000 KM (figure it out guys). Almost cried when I sold it for $3,000.00 after a new driver in our home backed it into our house and DRS quarter panel pushed in. Ugly. Well, maybe a little tear and it was time and there are likely hundreds of parts finding their way to their next home at this very moment.
15% grade on a paved, 205 ft. (love to play with Imperial and Metric) driveway and took over a week to sort the winter tires and wheels.
Finally! Snow and freezing rain last night. This A4 allroad is new to us as we only own one Audi at a time - so far. My lovely wife went to pickup our daughter at her PT (believe it or not in the GWN) Dairy Queen job and I showed her the hill descent control function. I should have filmed it. 15% (yes, more maths) grade and it just sorted the entire descent. Just for shits and giggles I sent it - well sent my wife - down the grade checking the ride with the winter tires. I highly recommend winter tires. Or a the very least TRUE four season tires if perhaps you use a pickup truck and use Rotivas. Trust me, people. They work and around 10% of the K02 tire roar.
Buy a good CPO of either one of the alltrack or allroad as North Americans in general don't like wagons and you can always use a wagon over any small crossover and get a deal. Just get the CPO if you are on a fixed budget and maintain it well. Our experience with Audi has been great for decades. Just have to be ready to pay for out of warranty and know you have done the best to keep that preventative and actual maintenance over the time you've owned it, then decide if you still love it.
13:05 “that’s what she said”
Alltrack seat belt looks super tight around 3:30.....
both the same haldex drivetrain, the 4cyl a4 allroad isnt quattro system anymore its adopted the haldex from the vw group. I believe the a4 allroad v6 tdi in europe is still quattro
Haldex was never ever used in any A4. Some versions got quattro ultra but that's entirely different drivetrain.
Why not Passat alltrack?
the new audis are quick 5.89sec is pretty good. It’s possible to get as low as 5.2 sec
Doesn't the alltrack have hill-hold?
Pretty sure it does. I think you just have to come to a complete stop first. Test drove a manual one and it definitely held me on an incline when the light turned green.
Trails with no crawl ratio gear and a manual.... Poor clutch
Love a well executed DCT.
Is Nathan the big schnitzel?
Schnitzel ist gut (Schnitzel is good). Very nice Canal. Greetings from Germany
Große Schnitzel sind mir egal? (Big schnitzel don't care?)
It's the MK4 Baltic Green
Should have used the DG transmission.
Audi is the vehicle most likely to chase me on my motorcycle in heavy traffic
I don't understand why you used a manual on the VW wagon. Using an automatic would have produced a better comparison test with the Audi. I actually think the VW looks better visually and the car will fit most people's needs for a lot less money !
Gregory Trane manual is better at controlling downhill speed, and you have also more control over how you apply power to the wheels via clutch. Automatic could be hunting for gear (though you could switch it to manual mode, but it still auto-upshifts for you).
You wouldn't use the auto in auto, use the paddle shifters in manual.
They can only test drive whatever they are given.
If the Audi was a DSG they're both clutch based. The DSG is hopefully the wet clutch version, which won't smell as bad, but will still overheat if you inch it along. Torque convertor autos are nicer off road in cars without a low box, though not as good for controlled descending (Without a low box you'll probably be on the brakes in both cars anyway though) but you pay for toque convertor autos it in crappy fuel economy for the whole life of the car - the modern autos are probably competitive on efficiency, but cost more to buy and repair.
Agreed I have a VW that has a DSG transmission and it runs just like an Audi just less horsepower. Can't wait for APR to get new 18 2.0T tunes out so I can go troll some Audis. And I got a feeling VW is lying about the HP ratings, hopefully I'll be able to get it on a dyno late April and see if that 174 hp is accurate cause it moves a whole lot faster then it should.
If only VW threw away the halogen reflector headlamps across their model line up. Yuck! They look positively 1990s.
Not buying the SEL package saved us 6k It will cost me less than $1500 to upgrade my front and rear lights when i want, i'd rather have paid $22k for my All track vs 30+k
A Passat Alltrack vs this Audi Alltrack would be more fair. A Passat alltrack has the 2.0Turbo too!
But check out this motorcycle guy up here
Why are you putting the same brand against it's self
Audi should have offered the Allroad with the air suspension available everywhere else. It's disappointing they don't offer that feature here. It would drastically improve this vehicle's ground clearance and overall ability and comfort.
Known to be junk that’s why they switch to coil overs in the newer models
@@jimmywoo7875 everywhere but the U.S. you can get air suspension
Is there really a old gold mine on top of that hill?
Yes
DAT *T E A L*
I think Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo beat the Audi can you try them to race.
what i got is he says he can drive stick right as he stalls
you actually could just put in auto hold then you wouldnt rokl backwards with the golf...
If car manufacturers really want to increase fuel efficiency by disabling an axel, disable the front wheels then not the rear!
Powerwagon Don't Care! Love Nathan's T-shirt.
you can make the alltrack faster than the allroad with an apr tune
tune them both and see what happens then ;)
This comment just made me want an Alltrack really bad.
@@compunerd Fudge yeah!
Do an APR Plus tune on the a
Allroad and get + 35hp and +105 #ft. All for $1100.
Why do you drive into that dam whole every time? Gee’s!
Both cars were TURBOCHARGED and therefore not nearly as affected by altitude change versus an aspirated engine . Hers your video on the subject : ua-cam.com/video/6j9Vyt0UqTU/v-deo.html
Why would you drag these...? Getting worse and too previsible.
I don't understand why you compare audi a4 to golf...that's not the same class :D
man that audi is fast
I have an Audi A6 Avant and Audi A4 1.8T, both amazing cars I ever driven and I refuse to buy anything else other than an Audi😭💖
Pretty poor shifting on the drag race. The DSG in manual mode with paddles and launch control would have got him away faster and down the line quicker.
Learn to drive with Electronical Differential Locking System guys! (12:50 wtf?) just stay on gas for a few seconds.
Get the all track save and 15,000 but just get the automatic transmission
The Audi has much less cargo space that the VW (50.5 sq. ft. versus 66.6 sq. ft.). Even a regular Golf has more cargo space. What's the point of a wagon like that?
They should get the Passat Alltrack for this test..
58.5 att road vs 66.6 all track. Just so your numbers are correct
Doin't blame the VW cause Nathan needs more seat time with the "man" pedal. lol
Nathan is 500 lb you should consider that too
The Alltrack DSG version would have done better in this race, thanks to its launch control.
Yeah, my Alltrack's best time is 7.25 0-60, just a hair off the Car & Driver test of 7.5 seconds. I Noticed from launch the VW had a horrible start. When ever doing 0-60 tests you always do at least 3 tests.
If I was on the market a for a new ride Alltrack will fit the bill, There's no doubt in my mind the Audi is way more capable and way more refined but of course, I'm just a simple man.
It's also $10k+ more expensive, so you're better off with the VW in most cases
VW all the way i have a skoda 1.2tsi estate with 7 speed duel clutch DSG and it is just as good at off road as these 2 are
I would think for offroad you would be better off with a torque converter transmission, but then again these cars aren't going to be going offroad.
DSG on a 1.2 tfsi estate.. Like a spoiler on a Yugo?
Comparing a dsg car with a manual is a bit silly.
