2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack - Redline: Review

- With crossovers flooding the market, buyers in need of versatility that aren't interested in blending in have a few more options to choose from. Volkswagen hopes to lure in those buyers with the very popular Golf family, the all-new Alltrack wagon promises all the capabilities of the SportWagen with a bit more ground clearance and standard AWD. Keep in mind, some competitors offer more interior room and value, but few can match the Golf's car-like driving dynamics.

I think you were a bit too critical of the looks, and they are certainly subjective. I happen to think it's fairly good looking in its minimalist styling, without the overdone creases, fake vents, and excessive trimming of the competitors. Also, the 1.8T engine is silky smooth and returns very good fuel economy for being coupled to an AWD system. The interior, again, it's minimalist in design so it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but in a few years the competitors will look silly while this one will have aged well.
I disagree with his view that the design is boring and bland. Other car journalists on UA-cam don't seem to have the same opinion about the design. To me it looks more upscale and sporty than it's price point would indicate. The silver side mirrors, the cladding, good looking rims, the dual exhaust tips.... It's a clean design that looks classy and will still look good 5 years from now. I would rather have a crisp and not overdone German look like this than some of the latest swoopy curvy designs different brands have been introducing. Something along the lines of a less expensive version of the Audi A3 or A4 in a wagon design with the benefit of more cargo space.
The conservative design is a good thing. The Japanese brands are very outlandish now, and American cars and crossovers now look like potatoes
JackalopeTX Agree 100%. I got a 19 Alltrack as soon as I found out they were being discontinued. Was considering a Crosstrek, but it looks so dumb.
I actually like the way it looks. Alot
I fully agree with you.
I completely agree as well
I just bought an SE in 2020. Best looking “car” I have seen in I don’t know how long! I love all of the features the SE has. Great performance with a six speed manual. Too bad VW stopped production. I’ve got mine, though...couldn’t be happier!
See I like the simple design. I appreciate the conservative look VW goes for. Room for improvement...of course, but when isn't there?
My wife is in a wheelchair and cannot get into an SUV. This car is perfect for getting offroad where our FWD car will not get. I believe there will be many people using it to go camping and fishing. I also like how it looks. Thanks for the review.
So bland? You mean not tacky mess like so many SUV's or the Outback or frankly most of Subi's lineup that is overstyled and seems like someone with A.D.D designed it. Looks good, interior fit finish and equipment for the price is head and shoulders above just about anything else. You can always by a Std Sportwagon if you want classic and even better value. It also has more cargo space than 90% of the mid sized and compact SUV's. More than Q5, RDX, X3, GLC300...Only other wagon as well thought out I've send time in is the BMW 3 wagon but its $ is almost double well equiped
Did you see his new car ??😄😄
You do great car reviews. I appreciate your quality videos.
your energy is really chill this review :)
He seemed tired.... too much party....
So nice and stylish. ....and very practical and sensible. Sure want one.
I'd rock one
same but its too expensive
Me too
I Love the look, glad it kicks too!
Compared to the new Jetta, I love the way this car looks. Such a cleaner and more crisp design
To me the design looks upscale and refined, especially when compared to the Japanese and American competition. I'm in the market for a lightly used Alltrack and plan on holding on to it, as it should age nicely
The 1.8TSI Engine consistently dynos at about 170whp and I agree, the engine feels underrated. VW could've easily rated it at 210hp.
Bland? What do you suggest as a bench mark in styling?
Thoughts on the Alltrack vs the "regular" 4motion Golf Wagon?
I have a 2015-16 Golf SportWagen. Everything mostly the same. One question: Is it possible to close all windows using the key? I can do that only by keeping my palm on a door handle.
You can thru a vag-com
i heard this 1.8t actually puts out around 190hp, forgot if thats to the wheels or not. but wow that 2nd gear is taller than i'm used to
Fantastic review! This vehicle is designed for active lifestyle....it makes more sense if you test it both on road and off road. This review is more like for GTI or Si, instead of outdoor sport wagon.
I was hoping to see the paddle shifters in action. This is one of very few cars with a DSG gearbox, it seems like a major selling point
I love it's clean minimalistic look. I think it's way more handsome than the clownish alternatives.
Nice review - i agree - a car on the outside and features dosent add up but then you drive it.
I have exactly the same car a 2017 Tornado Red Alltrack SE without Driver Access. Awesome driving dynamics , the DSG is the best Tranny I
Have driven. No regrets, love the car. I like the exclusiveness , I recommend the Subaru, the Alltrack I prefer it to be fewer on the road
Do you want to review a 2016 DSG Golf R?
Been wating to ask this for a while if I may, are those Garmin cameras that you are using to film your videos, and if so, would you mind advising me what kind those actually are?????? Thanks
Andrew Silva It's called the Auschwitz Action Pro 2
I feel that added height affects the styling a LOT. I have a 2016 Sportwagen (same body) and it's much more sleek-looking.
The wagon stigma is a 1990s thing, ain't it? It was pretty common to have wagons as family vehicles before that. I hate the headlights on this car! The HID/ LEDs make a big difference.
Dongi agree... you can still find some early 2000s wagons that are very appealing but rare. Most new cheap cars now has projector headlights!
I have the fully loaded 2018. 18 Wheels are very nice and the 8 inch infotainment looks much better. Also got the LED's. the 18 has blind spots and rear cross traffic if you get the drivers assistance package. Well worth it IMO. Agree it should be standard though.
You loving it? Currently driving a 2010 Ford Escape and looking at all the damn compact SUVs is mind-numbing. Love the 19 Cherokee and was pretty set on that and then this wagon caught my attention...
Yup. Handles very well and is perfect for my dog. Easy jump in and out. Awesome sound system as well. Lots of base and no interior rattles. Better sound than my harmon kardon in my last car. Much easier to wash than my SUV's as well. Only drawback is the blind spot symbol is orange which is the same colour as the in mirror turn signal blinker.
get one of those Camera Sliders -- would be realy nice touch to your videos
The slots in front of the shifter is for parking pass, not credit cards,
Funny, I didn't know that.
Cheers
Halogen......really?
It's the old Model, new one got full LED, Digital Dash, etc.
Royhan and in 2017!! unacceptable
I have the 2017 Jetta and i hate that VW took away the HID it was so stupid at least i have the led strip they added in 2017.
Stfu before I switch your LEDs for halogens.
Lights don’t make a car.
That’s what I said. BORING
Look awesome
I don't know why car reviewers comment on a car's looks. From the video, we can all see what the car looks like and we can judge for ourselves.
It's pretty sad that here in America we have to disguise wagons as SUVs and call them something else besides a wagon to get people to buy them. It's yet another thing on a long list that baby boomers ruined for everyone else.
That was the Magnum.
KentB27 they need to label them as *Estates* like it Europe rather than wagons
blame Hollywood
It's stupid wagons are better in every way. Younger people are fools and I'm young. I have an R8 btw.
I like the car
I think that the DSG should be an option on the majority of their models.
what about comparing with Impreza wagon
Bought a 19’ SE 6 speed. APR tune wakes this car right up 🥹💕
so much hate for this car in the comments XD besides being a bit expensive id take it over a legacy or crosstrek easily. much more fun to drive while being super practical
Nice Review Of 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack. 😁
i just wish the Audi allroad 2.7t was in the USA, my mom had one for a few years before the gas pump broke, and that thing went like bonkers, and it sounded pretty good, but Audi needs to do something if I want to buy one of their products
for the cost of sacrificing some interior plastics quality a VW T-Roc seems like the more obvious choice
Accord 1.5t please??
Right now in the Oregon area, the Alltracks are going for 26k.
I got my '15 Sportwagen se tsi automatic at Armstrong VW in Portland, OR in May '15 for 27k through Costco. Added 1100 for Clear Bra and 400 for tinting.
Have gotten 40mpg on road trip.
Glad I got mine before they are discontinued. Love the practicality, performance and economy.
Plenty of power, fully loaded with camping gear and 21 cf roof box.
Fender premium audio rocks and panoramic sunroof hasn't leaked yet..lol
Best car I've ever owned!
Cheers
Can already see people buying these and throwing on the golf nicer lights etc. Feel like a lot of Subaru wagon owners found their next car since Subaru abandoned wagons. Outback is not a wagon even if Subaru says so
nice. this is like VWs subaru outback
The constant backhanded compliments 😂
300Ibs or 400Ibs which one is it!
I’m guilty....I like conservative design
Once again VW of America entered a potentially lucrative market segment years after they should have. After a slightly less than 3 year run the Sport Wagon and the All Track version of it are being pulled from the U.S, market.
Sounds like Sofiyan (hope I spelled that right) really didn’t care for reviewing this car at all. Haha
I really enjoy this model, much better than Tiguan & Atlas
Sounds like a "wait for the redesign" model year. I almost prefer my 2007 Focus to this.
The '18 is coming out in like a few weeks, lol...waiting for the Mk7.5 GTI
ArcadianGenesis The Euro spec VW’s, especially the Golf is so much better than the cheapened US spec car
Maybe so, but the US spec is still a very good car. I actually prefer the touchscreen display on the US spec because it has physical knobs unlike the Euro spec (while being a little smaller).
I *do* wish we had more color and wheel choices, though.
ArcadianGenesis you can get the screen with the knobs on the EU spec car, the one without the knobs is optional.
Yea man
Me: Golf, what have they done to you?!?! D:
Golf:_With dying breath_ Avenge me......
in what world is this a suv? this is a wagon. i mean i would say its competition is the audi version, subaru crosstrek, and very distantly competing with the outback. it is too bad the american market doesnt like hatches. i really watch a hatchback but not enough options that fit my needs.
The turbo Crosstrek that Subaru won't give us.
With a dual-clutch, not a CVT.
Hey if you truly want it you can put the wrx powertrain in it.
No. Subaru's FA 2.0DIT is 268HP.
Have an 18 Crosstrek Limited and love it. If you have a full load of people or gear, yes you definitely need more power but driving myself or with the wife, it is fine. Great off-road ability and the 18 year is so much better then the last generation Crosstrek.
lmao great off-road ability? It's literally just a raised Impreza, nothing more.
My much cheaper 2016 sportwagen limited has alllll the drivers tech including adaptive cruise. All for about$25k
Why would they give you such a basic version as a press car?!? Not even a lighting package or tech package? Yowsa.
The Euro spec golf is so much nicer and better equipped than the cheapened US Golf
This guy you can tell is not a VDub fan, and I wish he wouldn't keep comparing it to an SUV, Its a wagon. Apples to oranges. To me, its basically what the Outback used to be,and aggressive wagon, where the new Outback is essentially now what an SUV crossover used to be 10 years ago.
Halogen lights.. also roof rack with a giant glass on top? Uhh
This is a car I want to like, but I just can't get behind it. Sized closer to the Crosstrek, but priced more like an Outback. If it had a more premium look and feel, it could work, but it doesn't.
niuhuskieguy this car will not sell in very high numbers. Not even the regular Golf sells very well in Muricah. I purchased a regular Golf back in June and got about $7000 off the MSRP. It was an SE with the LED Lighting Package and stickered for $27,000 and I only paid $20,000. I barely even haggled and had dozens of dealers calling to get me to buy. VW is hurting right now due to their tutonic behavior regarding diesel gate but that aside, I guarantee if you are interested in the car, you should be able to get a sharp price on it. Most people are purchasing SUVs so a car like this will definitely be more niche and will be heavily discounted. The local dealer here by me is always advertising $5,000 off of MSRP. I would also probably wait until the 2018 models arrive because VW is supposedly adding a 6 year/72,000 mile warranty with every car except the E-Golf but if you’re ok with the Russian Roulette reliability then go for it. Or buy a Subaru Crosstrek, the more sensible choice.
A Google User I'm also not a fan of the interior. For me personally, it does not look as nice as my Subaru. I do like that panoramic sunroof though, Subaru can't touch that.
niuhuskieguy I was contemplating the Subaru Impreza hatch when I was looking at the Golf. I personally like the look and feel of the Golf. It’s simplistic in that German kind of way. The Subaru interior is also nice but one big drawback for me was that all the Subaru Impreza interiors I looked at were black and I really wanted a lighter colored interior, which the Golf satisfied. Both are nice at the end of the day.
I like the Golf, just not the station wagon version..
early crew
I'd get the new '18 XV so quick if they had a bigger engine
Jeffrey Kim. Turbo would be nice...
i prefer the golf sportswagon 4motion wjth dct
Bong Lim... I prefer the GSW S w/4 motion and 3 pedals...
VW is so reluctant to put LED headlights in their economy cars. Meanwhile the Corolla has had them for years.
Fanboys will say it's classic and doesn't need any updates.
Usually like your reviews but this one is subpar. It’s very clear you don’t like this vehicle. After this review I’d be surprised if VW PR keeps sending you vehicles.
VW designs last long long after any other brand. The internet may grow old but never the exterior
Discontinued... 😥 He called it, no match for SUV demand
Stop calling that an suv
There isn’t a single VW model in their lineup today that I even like.
31K for a partial power seat, wow.
Ivan Vojt and no blind spot monitoring, no mention of heated seats, so probably doesn't have them, no rear cross traffic alert , half assed electric seat, no rear camera dynamic guide lines, 0 led drls, unbelievable for that price. and mediocre to poor gas mileage to boot. what is vw thinking. Probably all those millions they paid out in diesel gate hurt them so hard they can't afford to put these on the the car for 31000 bucks!
i'd rock one but its too expensive
Ivan Vojt guys they don't care because nobody is gonna buy them in America, look at this car in Europe.
Ivan Vojt who cares just adjust the seats manually
what do u expect VW invested all the R&D into timing major mechanical and electrical failures right outside of warranty windows.
This guy is so NEGATIVE. Yeah sure, you can point out some of its flaws, and a little of your own opinions. But, focus on the positives of it! It's such a cool car! Working with Ellen, be kind to things, not mean.
TRUMP 2024
The Acura TSX/ Accord Wagon will definitely be a better buy.
Joel Fuentes Can't buy those new, thos arent in production anymore, even the Crosstour I believe is discontinued as well.
Jonathan Washington I know, but even a used one from the ones I mentioned is still better looking and overall better value for your money by being used.
Joel Fuentes there engines are pretty meh and there used
My 2012 TSX Wagon is a unicorn.....excellent utility and build quality...high compression Civic SI motor, forged crankshaft, very exclusive with so few out there. If you want one, look for a low mileage CPO sample and jump on it.
The problem with the tsx wagon is the transmission. That old 5-speed auto is really dated compared to the dual clutch.
Wow what a negative Nancy review.. I bet you think the Civic R looks good!! All the Japanese crap you were praising has styling that will be outdated in four years. You complain about everything this car doesn't have, and then complain about the price. Show me a car that has everything you said this car should have, that doesn't cost $10,000 more than this. VWs are great cars. My current Jetta with the 2.0T, and DSG, now has 270,000 miles. Never opened the engine, and has the original turbo.
Larry S please don’t be a VW apologist, this cars shit and you know it.
I thought VW was kicked out of U.S
Pocha S Lying about emissions didn't hurt anybody. GM fucked up to the point where people died.
Pocha S we can't say they didn't try 🙃
i wish :/ i hate how they pretend to be luxury
only the diesel models, they polluted too much
Pocha S Literally speaking, that was Suzuki. Financially speaking, that was Mitsubishi.
I actually like the no non sense styling, boxy is practical to get in and out of. Too bad its a VW and not a reliable toyota.
i would rather have a subaru h-6 outback wagon
Ill take a crosstreck over this. even lowest trim lol.
They are cool, but you will use twice the fuel and get identical 0-60 times.
Dave if u care about 0-60 times then don't get a wagon at all lol.
Except not really a wagon anymore
Danjan K the Mercedes E63 AMG wagon would like to have a word with you...
What's the obsession with LED, they look terrible
check out savage geese vids. so good and so much better.
Silver painted mirrors on a different colored car? WTF!!!
Thats a classic VW and Audi thing, nothing new.
This is WAY overpriced, as equipped, for $31k. VW needs to get real with their pricing.
You keep talking about mazda but nobody is buying them and i prefer the simple design that VW has
Mazda sells 300,000 cars per year in USA, same number as Volkswagen despite being several times smaller than Volkswagen. So I have no idea what you're talking about.
no one What are you talking about? I see new Mazdas all over the place. They're everywhere now. Mazda is selling more cars right now in the US than they ever have before.
I see plenty of new Mazda’s on the roads here in California. Not sure what you are talking about
no one lololol the fu I see Mazda everywhere 😂😂😂 more new Mazda CX crossovers than VW crossover especially
SnoBoardnRN Mazda is a small manufacturer compared to their rivals. Relative to their size they sell really well.
It’s looks like a 1990 car
STOP SMACKING YOUR LIPS ALL THE TIME. IT'S VERY ANNOYING
Ahmed Jawed you're annoying. Go away!
nice comeback
lmao, good comeback, illegal b!tch
It's the worst
Don't you mean "The wurst"? HA!
looks like you have something in common with the car
The whole VW lineup need a redesigned especially the inside 🚮🚮
The interior of VW looks the same all the time for years now 🚮🚮🚮🚮🚮 need a refresh asap
THIS GUY AS A SALES PERSON DOES NOTHING FOR THIS CAR.....
Fail....
After owning 3 Volkswagens, I'm done with them. They're crap now... Very unreliable and boring.
Not a fan 👎🏽
Ugly, only has half of an engine, less tech than a car from 1902, fake leather, fake carbon fiber, cheap plastic, and probably has some sort of cheating way to pass emissions. What were you thinking vw??
Remix Island Music It's hard to fault VW for fake leather when some luxury cars use it as their standard seating.
... It's built to a price and will handle daily duties all day long... There really isn't much more capability than the GSW S w/4 motion...big prob w/the alltrack is no 3rd pedal
K03sport Where did you get that information from? You absolutely can get the Alltrack with a 6 speed manual.
Who would buy this over a Subaru, oh wait no one does
someone who wants a more fun to drive wagon. although its definitely overpriced
