    Hi Zabrena. I'm a certified skincare specialist, and I highly recommend you take these lists with a grain of salt. Individual ingredients are unfairly demonized because of lists like these on the internet and social media. Yes, some alcohols are drying and you wouldn't want to apply them undiluted to your skin. In a formula, they act as solvents, emulsifiers, and preservatives. Sulfates can be harsh and irritating if not properly formulated. It's best to look at the formula as a whole in addition to the individual ingredients. Using the right products for your skin type is key. The primary ingredients I try to avoid are phthalates, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde donors.

    • @sigh_anna
      @sigh_anna 2 місяці тому +7

      There are companies that make the extra effort to create beautiful, elegantly formulated products that are effective, without the use of drying alcohol. The so-called high end brands that use alcohol in their products have no excuse to do so. Avoiding all irritants results in happier skin. Phthalate is such a broad category, and they aren't present the way fearmongers would have you think.

    • @BearScowe
      @BearScowe 2 місяці тому +11

      Yes! I agree that more research needs to be done by everyone. I would also really like to know the source of this list because I guarantee it’s from some green washing site.

    • @LoraA81
      @LoraA81 2 місяці тому +26

      @@sigh_anna understood. As I said, it entirely depends on the formula and what is needed to bring it together. I wasn't recommending high-end or any brand for that matter. Any ingredient has the potential to be irritating. Everyone is different, there is no one-size-fits-all for skincare and makeup products. Phthalates are known hormone disruptors, and yes there are lots of them. So knowing how to recognize them in an ingredients list is important. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water is my point.

    Yeahhh some amounts of alcohol, especially in skincare is usually there to get products to set better, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to automatically dry out your skin. Formulation is key

    Please be clear that *some* alcohols are drying. Others like cetearyl alcohol are actually moisturizing,
    Another place to watch out for sulfates is hand creams and body lotions.

    I like to follow cosmetic scientists and stuff, because brands really prey on our minds due to our beliefs in the science of things and there are some cosmetic scientists and dermatologists that are trying to debunk the marketing tactics. You may notice that in some articles they'll also suggest products to buy that don't have these terrible ingredients with them, some articles aren't being written by scientists just paid writers and sometimes it will be a scientist, but the article won't be in their field of expertise, but our trust in authority is being utilised too.
    I use sulphates, silicones, mineral oils etc. I'm finding a lot of our believes in certain ingredients are because a paper with no peer review and dodgy experiment interpretations says so, I've found there are papers where the scientist that wrote it is trying to tell everyone that the conclusion that's going around is not what their paper said, but the misinformation has gotten bigger than their message. I've found that some companies are sponsors of some papers because they have a commercial interest.
    Things like mineral oil are not 100% occlusive either and if you have really dry skin, can aid in better moisturisation, (moisturisation is the act of stopping water loss, using occlusives or even a natural oil on dry skinn is not moisturisation ).
    The ingredients being used to replace parabens are less researched and are causing more cases of contact dermatitis. The paper that showed parabens was in cancer tissues did not check healthy people.
    I've gotten more ongoing skin and scalp issues than before going after the "natural" alternatives that suddenly start popping up after an ingredient is cancelled by the media... Which now seems like suspicious marketing campaigns to me.
    I just do what works for me now lol, for example love that you've noticed a personal difference in not using your previous sulphate shampoos. (On the other hand, sulphates aren't harsh on their own, depends on the other ingredients in the shampoo, because of marketing, there are other ingredients that are just as harsh... But adding "sulphate free" is a good money earner these days for companies.)

    Not All alcohols are drying some do help with holding other ingredients together and longer on the skin so it can be absorbed so depends on what alcohol it is and what percentage of it is in it

    I also wanted to mention Hyaluronic acid if you’re using it as a serum make sure you’re mixing it with a good moisturizer or face oil because if there’s no moisture for the acid to pull into your skin then it will actually pull it from your skin and staying hydrated also helps this serum work better but definitely please use it with a cream or moisturizer of some type or else it won’t be able to do its job correctly and could cause the opposite effect even if you have oily complexion still use a light moisturizer if you’re using Hyaluronic acid serum because it doesn’t actually add the moisture itself it just helps your skin absorb any moisture so you get the most out of it but if not used correctly it can cause more dryness therefore more wrinkles

    With so much misinformation and disinformation circulating social media and propped up by people's ignorance, I think you should really be careful about demonizing common skincare ingredients. This just adds to the fearmongering because you don't have the expertise to offer an informed opinion here. Makeup tips - I'll gladly take your opinion. But this? No.

    • @sewitseams5632

      Exactly! Totally agree with you. She should just stick with makeup tutorials instead of fishing for content that she has no expertise in. I was really disappointed she went this route. I am not supporting “clean beauty” just so cosmetic companies can get us to buy more products while our makeup has a 6 month shelf life. Zabrena needs to get properly educated from dermatology or cosmetic chemistry channels. This video was a huge let down, and I usually love her content.

    Before finally discovering non-US sunscreens, I was trying to use a La Roche Posay sunscreen. My skin just seemed to get more and more irritated, and I usually have super smooth skin (good genes.) I finally figured it out….. the sunscreen had denatured alcohol. It took a lot of hard work and at least a month to repair my skin barrier. This makes it difficult to find a setting spray, as most of them use alcohol to mattify the skin and keep oils in check. NEVER AGAIN!! Thank you for making this video!❤❤❤❤

    This info isn't new to me, however, I've been researching hyaluronic acid, and have since tried to cut it out of my routine. It's almost impossible as it is trend to throw this stuff into almost everything we put on our faces. It's actually drying to our skin, unless you live in a humid climate and do not use AC, or have a humidifier running in your home. In a dry environment, HA will pull water from your skin, not bring it to your skin. I wish brands would stop with the hyaluronic acid madness.

      No need to be cautious of sulfates if you can have effective conditioners and moisturisers. I think dry hair/skin is showing that our moisturisation products and methods aren't good enough as opposed to our cleansers are terrible (some can be though, not trying to recreate the Sahara desert on my skin)
      Unless you're allergic/it's causing contact dermatitis but there are non sulfate surfactants that clean just as well.

    I’m not able to use products with denatured alcohol because it dries out my skin really badly. It’s in a lot of products so I always read the labels. For example most setting spray contains alcohol which dry up the oils in the makeup so it lasts longer. Many popular setting powders, both drugstore and high end do contain talc. I have noticed that some brands are now replacing the talc with cornstarch or mica. I do enjoy face creams with mineral oil as a final step in my evening skincare routine. It is definitely an occlusive ingredient that seals in the other products so that they work better. My skin is still soft and hydrated when I wake up.

    • @lookingatdaisies9901
      @lookingatdaisies9901 2 місяці тому +1

      That's because (as you may have already discovered) oil is not hydration so oily skin can be dehydrated. Our natural oils aren't very good at stopping moisture loss either But most people look at oily skin and think it doesn't need more stuff on it. Thereby dehydrating (removing the moisture) trying to remove the oil... Then not adding back moisture... But the face also needs oil.... It's like a chicken egg situation... Or is that catch 22🤔
      Also what I found out the other day
      Dry= no oil
      Dehydrated = no water
      It explains why we are all confused😅 Even the marketing team of brands apparently.

    Mineral oil in products in America are NOT carcenigenic. Yes maybe when we buy products off Temu, etc but not when they are made by American companies, even when the products are made in other countries. We still have US Federal Bureaus that oversee our safety re: skin care and cosmetics. I love you and I wanted you to know this so you wouldn't be afraid of Ponds Cold Cream and old products like that. (I'm an old person and I use Pond's to take off my waterproof mascaras). Peace out.

    Hi Zabrena! So, I absolutely adore you, and in no way am I trying to be contrary here. So, I’m pretty sure that I’m an adult who has undiagnosed high functioning Autism. My point is that I get hyper fixated on my interests. From 2016-2020 I was Obsessed with the Makeup community and makeup. From like 2020 to present, I became obsessed with skincare. Everything on this list has been talked about by Dermatologists and Cosmetic chemists, and many disagree with these claims. These are all stemming from “Green washing” and fear mongering. It’s entirely up to the individual if they feel better avoiding certain ingredients…that’s totally fine. Dr. Dray, for example, has the exact opposite opinion of Mineral Oil. It’s BECAUSE Mineral Oil is an occlusive that it’s an effective skincare ingredient and it actually holds moisture IN your skin. The cancer causing claims really hold no weight. Also, the ONE thing on this list that I am going to push back on, because I feel like this specific misinformation is actually harmful to people…is the one about Sunscreen. There is absolutely zero evidence that Chemical sunscreens cause cancer..and, as a matter of fact, people being advised to skip Sunscreen is extremely harmful and that is what will cause cancer and, more superficially, serious aging of the skin. That one part just really kinda made me grit my teeth, and it’s not your fault Zabrena, I just really recommend doing your own research on these topics/ingredients. Im going to link a few videos under my comment from highly educated women about these topics. Also, PLEASE WEAR SUNSCREEN YALL ❤

Well recently, I was wondering why Ive been getting redness on my face and sensitivity. Turns out Thayers also makes a version WITH alocohol, and I accidentally grabbed that last time I picked some up. I remember when I switched over to mostly alcohol free products, and it took months to fix my skin, but only about five days of using an alcohol based product to ruin it again.

      I have seven nieces and nephews all in one family, all home schooled. As one of them commented in adulthood, " Never underestimate the power of a woman who can home school seven children. "

    Sunscreen, bug spray makeup , body lotions and candles and air fresh so toxic. I hope the makeup industry is hearing this push for cleaner ingredients. It is very hard to find clean makeup and if do it is not cheap . Refreshing video glad you are putting it out there.

      There’s no such thing as “clean” makeup, it’s not regulated and it’s a marketing ploy.

      I have removed as many carcinogens from my life as possible. One that is rarely talked about is synthetic fibers in our clothes. You know that smell you get from the Tupperware drawer? That's plastic off-gassing. When you open your closet, you are inhaling those same gasses from your clothes. When you wear synthetic fabric you absorb it through you skin as well as inhaling it. I have been slowly but steadily removing synthetics from every area of my life. Since i removed most of these from my closet my asthma and other symptoms have become much more manageable. I have fibromyalgia and I need all the help I can get!

    I love you and your channel soooo much, been subscribed a long time. So I want to speak the truth in love. I think you should do a little more research on these ingredients. You have oversimplified the facts and I suspect you have inadvertently read too much biased information rather than real scientific research. I recommend watching content from No BS Beauty, Abbey Yung and Dr. Dray on these topics.

    I disagree with some of this, Zabrena. Please watch some of the videos on Lab Muffin Beauty Science, Dr. Michelle Wong is a cosmetic chemist and debunks these myths. I also follow dermatologists like Dr. Dray and the Doctorly channels that cover these topics. I ONLY trust people that are doctors covering the science and health risks of ingredients. Most of what was covered in your video is purely myths and can be easily debunked by doctors! Please watch Dr. Wong’s videos for better insight, she has all the science data in her presentations.

    A lot of people avoid those alcohols in skincare and makeup.
    That said what matters most in skincare and makeup is the formulation. The ingredient list is a good start but doesn’t tell you everything.

    I follow this list 4/6. I am not strict about sls or parabens. Alcohol is a cheap way to make a formula have an appealing texture but it eats your skin barrier. Most setting sprays are loaded with it. The paraben studies have been widely debunked if I recall correctly. I don’t do preservative free and am not a “health nut” but I have seen my skin less irritated by removing those one by one. When I use them now I notice it!

    The alcohol in products is intriguing. Sulphates don’t surprise me. I stopped using them in my hair years ago and always got hairdressers impressed and noticed I didn’t use them. I also didn’t start wearing makeup till 2021 so I wasn’t exposed to them in makeup. Paraben damage has been known for so long I’m glad most places don’t use them anymore. Talc…I can’t believe moms were told to use that on their babies butts. I never did cause that info had been going around for more than 20 years too. I’d love to hear more and what big products to avoid that contain them

    And no, parabens are not bad for you as well, this info was based on an old and flawed study. Just because there’s a study doesn’t mean that it’s validated, peer reviewed or not biased. Yikes, don’t believe everything you’re told. Dermatologist, Dr. Dray, has debunked tons of this and will go into depth about this.
