That tuned flat-6 was a pure engineering symphony. A true driver who loves hard driving and an awesome power-to-weight ratio coupled with second to none car control/design of the 911 platform can appreciate this car. It's not for everyone.
They hadn't gotten a chance to wire them up yet. I actually like it: "No officer, as you can see my gauges are not working, so I have no idea how fast I was going"
mzondi1970 same, my first car was a '85 944T. wasn't expensive a few years ago- especially when it was running but was down on compression. Re surfaced head, and new head gasket; ran like factory. only has 35k original miles, was going to be 5.3 swapped with a Renegade kit. I regret selling that car almost daily.
I'd do the same thing if I were building it for myself. I don't need carpeting, but a headliner of some kind really makes a difference, and maybe some custom rubberized flooring.
I cant believe how idiotic some of the comments and people are on here. 99% of you are just jealous basement trolls. The guy is doing a review for you to watch. I cant see how calling him fat and change your glasses has anything to do with the video. The music fits very well especially after the 2 minute mark. How's this for an idea: go out and make a better video... it takes balls to do this stuff. Love the reviews. Keep it up.
I happened to drive up on this amazing 911 in Newport Beach as Joey pulled into the Rusty Pelican. Heard this beast from down the road and my car is fairly loud. Instantly it struck me as the PERFECT blend of RACE, STREET and ICONIC VINTAGE PORSCHE.
One of my favorite episodes, not necessarily because of the car (although it is a beautifully constructed, piece of art) but the use of the music to differentiate this video from the others since this car's nature IS that of the 80's. Matt, having done his homework, clearly conveys what he feels while behind the wheel as well the difference between the original and this tuned model. Great work guys!
The tach and speedo hadn't been wired yet. We bumped our schedule up to get the film done earlier and they just didn't have time to get the wires on. In my original in-car I said it, but it just didn't make any sense to keep it in, as it didn't add to the film.
Congrats Joey on doing something with so much restraint and taste on the outside (eg the 935 style rims!) but so much passion on the inside. Thanks Matt (and team) for showing us this great car.
I really like this new direction for tuned. It's almost like you guys are doing themed seasons. Season 1 was all about looking for the best finished cars, season two was all about power, and three could be all about driving enjoyment/ purity. These are all perfectly valid ways to think about what tuning is, and if that's what you're doing now, it's completely awesome. Keep up the good work.
Just because they aren't working at the moment, doesn't mean you need them to work if it's your own car. It's one of those things that he said he would get around to eventually, but, like he said in the video, he spends his time on customer cars. Look around that shop, you don't think they can get a tach to work there? He hasn't gotten to it, that's all.
The AE86 of Mt. Akina Well, they're INSPIRED by the wheels from a 935 race car, but that's not really the same thing as "period correct." Period-correct would be an actual set of OZ wheels from a 935, since that's what someone might have done at that time... I'd like them better if they were an inch or two smaller in diameter. That 80's look is pretty cool and does suit the car, but I think it throws off the effect when you go that big.
i got that vibe from the 997 BBi video, how Joey was saying they usually interview new customers to find out the goals of the build.... i like them, they're not cookie cutters, which is fine, but they just take it to another level with how unique their work is
i clearly remembers the first Tuned. i LOVE Porsches. absolutely 100 % love them. I live in Denmark, and are going to the N24 alone to droll and cheer for Porsches. I hope i will one day drive one.
My favorite generation of 911, love that platform! The car docent really need a lot of power cars of the 80's are like that. Love all the race-car details on it an the wing! I'm glad tuned is back!
usually no one, unless the engine is something you've never used before and because of it's super-light internals, revs up and down more like a literbike than a car. It matches perfectly if you're driving as fast as you can drive, but if you're shifting any slower than "as fast as possible," it's very difficult to rev match because the gearbox is heavy and a little clunky, and the engine changes speed so quickly. Then, a tach might be helpful.
been going through Matt Farah withdrawal ... the Smoking Tire podcast is just a tease that gets me fired up but no physical action - so glad to see Tuned back =D
Welcome back Tuned and thank ypu for kicking off the new season with such a perfect car. Love to see what it would look like without the huge rear wing but.
They are called Dillon Optics, who mastered the anti-glare lens when making scopes for sniper rifles. They are the official eyewear of the smoking tire.
Great video, and great concept car. Having owned several porsches and now a 996 997 aficionado and can still relate to the raw sound and feel of the earlier 911s with less weight and more power than provided by the manufacturer. A purposeful car with the driver in mind. Thanks
completely different goals. Most people (as much as they love Singer cars) think Singer 911's are pretty silly. They are so expensive, and who even knows if they will be worth anything in the future or if all that money translates to an un-sellable car. Joey's done the car his way, and modernized some of the same touches as a Singer car would, but it's really just a clean race car whereas singers are ultra-luxury vintage road cars.
For a Porsche fan this is just fantastic. I've ridden in several 80's 911's growing up. I think he should have at least kept the air conditioning. I used to have a 914/4. Thank you.
I love these air cooled 911's. Especially in the early 90's when they went solid body color bumpers. It would drive me nuts that the tach and speedometer aren't working though and I would fix that ASAP.
they have a few basic bolt on packages for 996's and 997's, but with the older car or bigger builds it's catered more to the personal taste of the customer.
When I say "driving a 911 is hard," I mean that, if you don't know what you're doing, it will crash. Same as any other big power vintage 911's (especially the turbos). If the back end gets lose, and you lift, you crash. That's the rule with an old RWD 911.
Stunning car, and really nicely engineered, and those HRE wheels look simply amazing on it!! If I were lucky enough to own a car like that, I might have the engine detuned just enough to be able to run on pump gas, and perhaps a headliner and carpet to help make the car a little more comfortable as a daily driver. Yes, it adds some weight, but there can be a fine balance between comfort and performance. That being said, Joey's car is simply amazing!
I am so glad you guys are back. I have been using TSRE podcasts to tide me over for the meantime :-) Loved this video and the 80's theme is awesome. Once again so happy you guys are back :-D
You'd be surprised how often someone who shouldn't be concerned with value retention is absolutely terrified of it. On the flip side, the people who tend not to be so concerned with it are the people who can barely afford the car in the first place.
I just completed a very similar build with a 87 Carrera with the G50 transmission, all the suspension is old school like the car, the 3.2L engine is stock with a 911chips set up for 91 octane @ 220hp to the wheels, equal length headers, no heat or AC... full cage but accessible to get in and out, solid suspension all around, solid engine mounts and trans mounts... strut tower brace, hollow torsion bars 22mm in front 28mm rear, Porsche Factory original 993 rsr Momo steering wheel and more,,,
Nice to see you kept your promise on presenting balanced cars vs just high hp cars (not that anything is wrong with high hp). Resto-mod 911 is best platfprm for this type of wellrounded everyday sports car. Good selection.
Excellent vehicle. Only scratched the surface. Please more video footage of the car (exhaust plumbing, trunk and suspension mounts, etc.). Thanks for the video.
Every time I see one of those custom 911 gems, I want one. I need one. And I will not die before I build one. Great video, and another awesome car. Cheers!
Another thoroughly enjoyable TUNED episode Matt and fantastic shots from your team, keep up the good work. That 930 really is something special, I hope one day to do something like that but maybe with a mk2 996 gt3 when I get some money behind me. :)
I was thinking: he sits quite high, that sucks... bit later you said they put in the "big boy seat" that explaned. It's a great car with awesome mods! Love it, Fing jalous!
you're missing the point: "No, officer, I have no idea how fast I was going, you see my speedo and rev counter aren't working properly." It's called plausible deniability, and although Joey is going to hook up that stuff eventually, he's perfectly happy without it.
Congrats to joey.. THE best sounding 911 i have ever herd and aso the best!! Even better than the 911 classic limited edition!! Also awsome story for tuned!! Just loved it, summed it up perfectly!!
The guy who wants us all to drive cars powered by hundreds of pounds of batteries says that a 2,100 lb car is too heavy. Congratulations on being the first-ever winner of the "Guy Who Contradicts Himself While Looking Like a Child Molester Award"
some of them are (certainly Nakai-san's is), but actual performance isn't a requirement for them to sell you body work, so not all of them are actually fast.
yeah well at the end of the day, we choose the music we like that fits the cars. If you don't like it, you're welcome to not watch. You won't be missed.
Great video as usual. I think I might like the complete package car videos more than the crazy horsepower ones. Maybe because I can appreciate the craftsmanship easier. High HP I only try to think of the fastest car I've driven and double it that feel. Keep up the great work with both and glad you guys are back!
I come back and watch this video from time to time. Dream car
Funny how in 2013 "old porsches where a lot cheaper than new 911 GT3s"..
agreed. unfortunately our dream got 10x more expensive.
That tuned flat-6 was a pure engineering symphony. A true driver who loves hard driving and an awesome power-to-weight ratio coupled with second to none car control/design of the 911 platform can appreciate this car. It's not for everyone.
love the 80's synth pop back ground music - suits the video! nice one!
They hadn't gotten a chance to wire them up yet. I actually like it: "No officer, as you can see my gauges are not working, so I have no idea how fast I was going"
"Objects in the mirror are losing". Nice one!
the engine noise sounds makes life worth living. when i grow up i want to own and drive a Porsche
It's called 80's theme song music, and it fits perfectly.
They drive and handle exactly as well as the owner wants them to. RWB is body work only; it's up to the owner to do the rest.
about my 7th or 8th time watching this
Old school TUNED is still the best car show ever. BRING IT BACK Matt!
I come back at least once a month to watch. I love this car. I hate red but would still drive this car
lol meanwhile your picture is a red 911 :)
anon1561 Nah but one can dream. Ive had 944 turbos and 914 6 before they were worth anything.
mzondi1970 same, my first car was a '85 944T. wasn't expensive a few years ago- especially when it was running but was down on compression. Re surfaced head, and new head gasket; ran like factory. only has 35k original miles, was going to be 5.3 swapped with a Renegade kit. I regret selling that car almost daily.

Love the reviews. Keep it up.
somebody got their panties in a bunch because people are making fun of his MCM, LMFAO!!!
Does Matt even see anything through those sunglasses?
Because they look more like solid steel than glass.
Surprised the tach and speedo don't work.
I love watching the owners of these cars talk about the cars. You can really tell how much they love the car by how wide they smile.
2:47 song name? God I love this car (:
Mister K In for the response! I came down to comment the same thing!!
Mister K i need this song
I'm more interested in the song at 2:30
Best air cooled "street" 911 (964 3.6 RSA) build I have ever seen. Including Singer.
Great Job BBI.....hope u build more of them.
What is that song? I heard it at the airport today and Shazam won't tell me what the hell song that is.
Bailey Snow ROOSEVELT have a similar sound .. I just tried to Shazam it too. No luck
The tach and speedo hadn't been wired yet. We bumped our schedule up to get the film done earlier and they just didn't have time to get the wires on. In my original in-car I said it, but it just didn't make any sense to keep it in, as it didn't add to the film.
Tacho and RPM gauge isnt working, weird...
I think that's deliberate so they don't go to jail haha
Same gauge...
tach and speedo hadn't been hooked up yet. All the other ones worked fine.
shame the gauges don't work...
Congrats Joey on doing something with so much restraint and taste on the outside (eg the 935 style rims!) but so much passion on the inside.
Thanks Matt (and team) for showing us this great car.
Proud to be German !!
I really like this new direction for tuned. It's almost like you guys are doing themed seasons. toss the white rims bro.
Just because they aren't working at the moment, doesn't mean you need them to work if it's your own car. Great car, ugly wheels.
***** What do you mean? The wheels are awesome and period correct.

really? I love those wheels

Joey's been using it as a daily driver since last November when it came back from SEMA. It's his only car.
It can not get any better than this, absolute perfection. I can't take my eyes off it
I like how you guys went with the 80's esque sound in the background. Good show!
Looks like a 964 which is probably my single favorite car of all time, and this is far and away my favorite car ever featured on /TUNED.
My favorite generation of 911, love that platform! The car docent really need a lot of power cars of the 80's are like that. Love all the race-car details on it an the wing! I'm glad tuned is back!
Possibly the best-looking 911 I've ever seen...those wheels, damn!

The music is flippin' perfect. Spot on for this car, and what a car it is! Great to have you back Matt!
been going through Matt Farah withdrawal ... the Smoking Tire podcast is just a tease that gets me fired up but no physical action - so glad to see Tuned back =D
I'm glad tuned is going in this direction! I love the transition from huge HP cars, to more driver-oriented cars.
What a great opening episode, Matt this season is already shaping up to be a great one. Cant wait for more...
Welcome back Tuned and thank ypu for kicking off the new season with such a perfect car. Love to see what it would look like without the huge rear wing but.
One of the BEST episodes of Tuned EVER!!!
Keep doing it like this guys...excellent!
i was referring to a complete build. That's just a race car they are maintaining.
Thanks

notice the carbon fiber ducting for the brake coolers where the side marker lights used to be?
Great stuff. Love the minimalism, simply raw to the bone. Envy the suspension and brakes.
What an absolutely stunning car, more like this please! I could listen to that exhaust all day.
For a Porsche fan this is just fantastic. I've ridden in several 80's 911's growing up. I think he should have at least kept the air conditioning. I used to have a 914/4. Thank you.
Perfect track car.
I never thought I'd enjoy 80's cheesy tunes. Whoever chose the music was brilliant Matt!
I now have two reasons to watch Drive. Great work Matt! A 911 will always be THE car.
When I say "driving a 911 is hard," I mean that, if you don't know what you're doing, it will crash. Same as any other big power vintage 911's (especially the turbos). If the back end gets lose, and you lift, you crash. That's the rule with an old RWD 911.
Matt and the crew delivers once again! Tuned is the finest show on Drive!
THUMBS UP
It's like the naturally aspirated rs version of the yellow bird. It's one of the best looking 930's I've ever seen. Good job man.
12:45 that is a nice touch... the wiring is amazing
Project Nasty makes me question everything I do in my life and need to prioritize my life for more crazy fast aircooled 911s.... beautiful car!
The video and the music were great! I really missed this show.
I am so glad you guys are back. I have been using TSRE podcasts to tide me over for the meantime :-) Loved this video and the 80's theme is awesome. Once again so happy you guys are back :-D
I 100% approve of the 80's soundtrack to this entire video.
Keep up the great work Matt and crew!
You'd be surprised how often someone who shouldn't be concerned with value retention is absolutely terrified of it. On the flip side, the people who tend not to be so concerned with it are the people who can barely afford the car in the first place.
I see an exhaust that looks like that and I simply bow down & worship...
I just completed a very similar build with a 87 Carrera with the G50 transmission, all the suspension is old school like the car, the 3.2L engine is stock with a 911chips set up for 91 octane @ 220hp to the wheels, equal length headers, no heat or AC... full cage but accessible to get in and out, solid suspension all around, solid engine mounts and trans mounts... strut tower brace, hollow torsion bars 22mm in front 28mm rear, Porsche Factory original 993 rsr Momo steering wheel and more,,,
Would love to see it next to the 'Singer' Porsche. Thanks Matt good to have you back.
Love the behind the scene of your crew. Really cool you include them. in the end and while filming.
That's a very very raw car, and I love it (probably can't live with it everyday, but love it)
Nice to see you kept your promise on presenting balanced cars vs just high hp cars (not that anything is wrong with high hp). Resto-mod 911 is best platfprm for this type of wellrounded everyday sports car. Good selection.
Excellent vehicle. Only scratched the surface. Please more video footage of the car (exhaust plumbing, trunk and suspension mounts, etc.). Thanks for the video.

loved the sweet camera swingin skills at the end there by Zack
gas, temp, and oil pressure worked, speedo and revs not hooked up yet
The wheels look so beautiful and fits perfect
Another thoroughly enjoyable TUNED episode Matt and fantastic shots from your team, keep up the good work. That 930 really is something special, I hope one day to do something like that but maybe with a mk2 996 gt3 when I get some money behind me. :)
80's bgm was a nice touch, A great return for the new series!
I was thinking: he sits quite high, that sucks... bit later you said they put in the "big boy seat" that explaned.
It's a great car with awesome mods! Love it, Fing jalous!
I love the personality in this car. It's flawed, and so perfect. Nice to see you guys back.
because quieter would mean slower, and thats not a compromise joey wants to make.
you're missing the point: "No, officer, I have no idea how fast I was going, you see my speedo and rev counter aren't working properly." It's called plausible deniability, and although Joey is going to hook up that stuff eventually, he's perfectly happy without it.
Congrats to joey.. THE best sounding 911 i have ever herd and aso the best!! Even better than the 911 classic limited edition!! Also awsome story for tuned!! Just loved it, summed it up perfectly!!
I'm 5 minutes into the video and it's already brilliant. Thank you DRIVE.
That engine sound....owww it's good. Love the aircooled 911s.
those wheels complete the build perfectly
The guy who wants us all to drive cars powered by hundreds of pounds of batteries says that a 2,100 lb car is too heavy. Congratulations on being the first-ever winner of the "Guy Who Contradicts Himself While Looking Like a Child Molester Award"
glad to see tuned back,,,like the lil behind the scenes footage at the end
BBI is an official Recaro Dealer.
The music was so fitting. Great editing too. This is my favorite TUNED episode yet. Great job guys.
it sounds so beautiful. it's great this guy built for power to weight, instead of just adding power and aesthetics.
some of them are (certainly Nakai-san's is), but actual performance isn't a requirement for them to sell you body work, so not all of them are actually fast.
Terrific, Matt, and a beautiful car to boot. A labor of love.
Bring back Tuneddddddd
super-light flywheel, no tachometer, funky 930 pedals, it's not as easy as it looks to heel-toe that car without practice.
yeah well at the end of the day, we choose the music we like that fits the cars.
