Gesture Drawing Tips

- My first advice to any aspiring artist is to get proficient at gesture drawing. Once you have a figure mannequin worked out, you need to play with it, and learn how it moves. Gestures are the fastest and best way to do that.

For all of us who drew/copied Dave's figure gesture examples from his Gnomon videos a million times and wished for more...well here you go! Thanks Dave! I personally would like to see a regular gesture drawing video. There's magic here and it's never enough, and it never gets old.
Heck yeah, more videos of him just doing gesture would be GOLD
So he's giving you free stuff, and you write a post stating that you would like to see more "regular" free shit. How about you just say thanks for the original free stuff and leave it at that.
You can do the same type of gesture drawings from any figures you see!
THANK YOU for coming back to UA-cam! I couldn’t pick any other better pro artist to upload tutorials to learn from!!
Definitely agree with this comment
@@bluebirb1408 zhc was so helpful, I learned how to draw the torso and arms because of him👌 I don't really like what he's doing nowadays tho
He made a lot of good tutorials and now just does stuff that can go viral. Money talks, which is what a lot of people want in life.

I remember having the same anxiousness and excitement learning from what you're doing as i did with the old Wizard magazines with Bart Sears back in my younger years. Thank you for this Sir!
Thanks! I loved the Bart Sears Wizard stuff. I got so much of my anatomy from that!
I recently bought a Book with the How to Series from Wizard Mag. Man, that brought back some Memories.
I always love David Finch work, so glad he runs a channel now
I'm working on improving my gestural figure drawing in order to create some character sketches for a novel series I'm co-authoring. I must've skimmed thru 10 videos are more before I came to this one.... and it stuck! I immediately pulled out my pencil and just started sketching multiple figures in different positions without really thinking about it... something I don't usually do! This is just the type of video I was looking for!
Priceless information and a glimpse into a world that most artists never get a chance to see. Bravo! Thank you so much! All of your hard work on these videos is greatly appreciated!
Yes, you and Jim Lee are my favorite and now I get to watch and learn from both of you.
Same i started a month ago and i started getting serious ik how to draw chest, legs, hands and rn in with faces to draw superheroes from comics with shadows, anatomy and the line
@@goldenhd9656 you gotta mentor or help me man ;-; I'm having trouble with it rn
@@FarikoGalaxy looking at artists you look up to and trying to replicate their work to learn from their techniques is the ultimately fastest way to improve in my opinion. watching how the pros do it before doing it yourself is such a great method of learning that some people overlook because they think it's "cheating". i legit learned anatomy by doing nothing but watching Jim Lee's streams and looking at Yusuke Murata's hyper realistic bodies, and also managed to learn lineweight and crosshatching by looking at Kishimoto's manga panels, all by myself. I am a literal monkey in a human body, so if I can do it, you can probably do it twice.
Stay strong my man, art is something that takes time and patience to learn. There's a reason for why people like Kim Jung Gi took 30+ years to get where they are right now - they didn't just come out of the womb knowing how to do perfect 5-point perspective, they had to learn it.
@@RandomThings12 "I am a literal monkey in a human body," i love this
I think it's pretty incredible that I'm getting into gestural drawing again and hitting some snags, so I head over to your channel... and here's a video on gestural drawing. If I was an art teacher I'd be sending all my students to your channel. What you're presenting here is such a beautiful gift to the art and comic community. Thank you.
Great video! I've recently decided to go back to the basics and learn how to gesture draw. It's so relaxing and freeing. It's such a fun way to squeeze in drawing time during a busy day.
Thank you so much, David!! This was AWESOME! Really looking forward for the next tutorials!!
so glad I get to learn from one of the best! your videos are always an inspiration!
Honestly, this is my favorite part of the drawing process. Thanks for the video 🙏
Thanks for all these tutorials David, you are one of my favorite artists i would never have imagined that you would upload this type of videos to UA-cam 😊❤️❤️

I have a question can we use Gesture LINES
@@mariamwamburi1999 i guess
@@mariamwamburi1999 This is my method, but I just wasn't comfortable with stick figures. If they work better for you, then they are better! Definitely do it the way that gets you the best result.

Thanks, David. I'm so glad I found this channel. Your figures look like Bridgeman's "wedging" construction. I'm a big fan of teaching with Bridgeman & Loomis, but especially Bridgeman bc I feel like the act of merely copying it is effective. If we get an artist who is weak on gesture or construction I make them copy Bridgeman 3x. It never fails to yield improvement. I think it's how he puts the figure in a box & makes u imagine it as lego type blocks & columns
Great advice, I love quick gesture drawing. Its ideal for future reference. I have loads of sketch books with pages of poses. Then I have a few that on each page I deliberately made each page into a scene that I still use as reference/ideas.
Great videos David.
Thank you! Making them into scenes is a really great way to put them into practice, and think about them as part of a whole image.
vẽ messi ua-cam.com/video/0oYubp7sDvA/v-deo.html
Fantastic study! And I couldn't agree more. Studying different comic books has helped me learn so many different dynamic poses. Especially when I have a complete blank on what to draw.
Yes!! This is the exact video I needed, thanks, David. Would appreciate if you could make one on anatomy especially the forearms and stomach and and how the shapes change as the body moves.
Keep ‘em coming! LOVE seeing your process and tips, you’re literally my favorite artist!
Thank you!
Excellent information here and thank you for sharing. I like how you stressed the importance of drawing hands and creating a visual library just based on them, the idea that referencing everything is not efficient, and that sourcing from various artists is the thing to absolutely take advantage of in the times with the overloads of online information.
You have no idea how much this has helped me out
Thank you for uploading these videos and sharing your process with all of us! We really appreciate it especially since everyone’s in quarantine :))))
Thanks so much David, this tutorial has been really helpful, since I'm writing a Graphic Novel, but also doing the panel layout and rough sketches of the panels to check how the script is gonna look . 😀👍
Than you David for taking the time to share with all of us this tips... Highly appreciate it!!!

This is brilliant and I could watch this daily!
Thanks and keep them coming
I love David Finch. He bought his Gnomon courses long time ago. Even in this course he did say that reference is a bit of a waste. Listened to him and got stuck. (This video might be an extract from the Gnomon Video)
While he said "Reference is tedious", he also said to go out and look at people, to look at comic books. For drawing in the environment he did say to check comics, magazine and life.
One way or another, you need to build your image bank in your head to be able to draw poses on command like he does and reference is the way go to. Now reference can be from the web, go sit in a café, comics, magazine, from life drawing classes, etc.
He worked for a long time in the industry and this is why he can just draw from imagination like this.
Maybe discrediting reference is okay for a pro artist like he is, but for a beginner, use life, use comics, use reference. Build your Visual Library.
It depends on the art style, concept artists for example use a lot of reference and textures to create their artwork.
It really depends on your goals. You don't suddenly gain the ability to draw from your head after only practicing from reference, so if your end goal is to do dynamic stuff from imagination, you need to primarily practice from imagination. Of course, you still need knowledge of reality. You still have to take the time to study each new thing (whether by observational drawing or looking at an anatomy book etc), incorporate that thing into your regular imaginative practice to cement it, rinse & repeat. I think that's what he was trying to communicate. Practicing only observational drawing teaches you to think and see in 2D, which has its benefits but is not the core skill needed when making things up on the fly.
Third day doing these exercises and i can already feel a difference, i think i'll keep filling up pages for the time being until i get my mind straight for my next game.
Really appreciate the teaching style. Your videos have been very helpful. ive been struggling with the planning stages of my drawings for some time now.

you still have to know your anatomy to do this. my super quick gestures look good and are full of energy by they are so simplistic that once i go back in to try to tighten them, especially if i have them in a composition, often times I find that they don't work because my anatomy knowledge isnt where it should be
Thanks for the tips see you next time
