It makes me smile that you're eyeballing things instead of using all these crazy measuring tricks like in Scott Robertson's book. I used to overthink perspective so damn much when I first started, now it's a lot more intuitive and I can tell when proportions are off just from practicing
Studying perspective still helps you eyeball things though, so don’t neglect it. The more you study perspective, the more you will internalize it, which in turn helps you more easily and accurately eyeball something. At least it was for me, I’m nowhere near professional but when I first started drawing, I always tried to eyeball things thinking this is art and I shouldn’t need to measure things, my perspective was very off almost all of the time. After I started to study perspective, my eyebally drawings started to improve too.
I think it is good to know how to do both, Scott also works with vehicles and design, and perpective is a must have, 'you have a bit of lee way in comics, if it looks good, that's good enough
I was thinking the same thing. I use to draw in my teens (mainly copied) and stopped in my 20s...I started back up, last year (I'm 33 now) and I've grown so much because of youtube and I've branched out to multiple medias...love these free "classes"

Hi, amazing tutorial! Although I am not a professional by any means, I would want to point out a few mathematical errors in perspective in case they would help anyone. Of course, as you said, measuring is generally overtaken by good intuition and you have good intuition. 1) At 3:00 , you rotated a box and said the vanishing points should move an equal length from their current vanishing points. However, in this case, the left vanishing point would move faster from its current vanishing point than the right vanishing point. For example, if you think of rotating this box towards an angle that directly faces us, one vanishing point would go towards the center of the page, and the other vanishing point would move to a point infinitely far away. 2) At 6:40 , you showed how to replicate a box using its diagonal. However, I think it should be noted that since these boxes' diagonals are parallel, they would converge on a new vanishing point (in perspective, all parallel lines not directly facing us would). The vanishing point here should lie on a vanishing trace (a vertical vanishing point) directly under the right vanishing point (not on the horizon). The standard method to do this would be to draw a line from one corner of the box to the midpoint of the opposite edge and extend it to the bottom/top edge of your new box. The lines will meet at the far edge of your new, identical box. (sorry, explaining is hard without diagrams) Once again, these ideas matter less for someone with great intuition and practice, but I still thought I'd share this information with anyone interested!
Is there any videos that cover what ur trying to explain? Im having a hard time trying to picture it in my head.. I dont dislike going on going off intuition, but I want a more concrete foundation with accuracy and consistency, if anything I would love to know all the math behind perspective to draw anything 100% proportionate to the perspective

Thanks a lot Dave for this tutorial (and the previous ones of course)! Everytime I do foreshortening I draw and erase my lines several times until I feel satisfied with the result. I never quite manage to effectively achieve what I want in one go. I mostly struggle with extreme foreshortening, the end result tends to be flat, with my hand, forearm, and shoulder looking very stiff. Your advice is just great! Thanks again!

I followed your video today while sketching and it definitely help me understand the depth and thickness of what’s closer or farther with foreshortening. Especially when I ink or pencil think and thin lines.
Yet another incredible tutorial - I can see my own drawings improving after every one of these! You make everything so easy to understand, to the point where I know that all I need to do now is practice, practice, practice and I will end up with pages I won't be afraid to show to other people! Totally picking up on more than expected, thanks Dave. So happy with how you have presented your lesson, to see the measurements in practical application sure did it for me!
In a orbital type foreshortening, you can draw a circle with the radius of the length of the arm, then draw line in a the direction you want your arm to go, then bring down the line. That is where the fist will go.
Wow! What a great vdieo! In the beginning of 2019 I actually took a course on how to draw concept cars, and it helped me draw perspective lines well without actually doing a grid with a ruler. But for the buildings i still think the best way is to use the full grid like you do. Thanks so much for having such a great channel, it has helped my art in ways I could never imagine!
Other tutorial B like "Yea eyeball all of em" While other B like "Measure it with these rules" But your tutorial combine them in the right balance, and giving us a way to check whether or not our persepective is correct is just what i've been looking for
I think you could get the measurements for the forshortened arm by using a top view and drawing lines straight down from each joint that way you would be able to visualise where to draw what from the front view because they would be in the same place if viewd from the front

In a orbital type foreshortening, you can draw a circle with the radius of the length of the arm, then draw line in a the direction you want your arm to go, then bring down the line. That is where the fist will go.
A very important topic. Thank you for the tutorial David ❤️

This cleared literally everything for me, wow
I'm going to treasure this video forever.
Other tutorial B like
"Yea eyeball all of em"
While other B like
"Measure it with these rules"
But your tutorial combine them in the right balance, and giving us a way to check whether or not our persepective is correct is just what i've been looking for

I think you could get the measurements for the forshortened arm by using a top view and drawing lines straight down from each joint that way you would be able to visualise where to draw what from the front view because they would be in the same place if viewd from the front
This was incredible. Thank you
