Hi guys! Here is the analysis of Liverpool's pressing, Gegenpressing is a simple concept, but let's detail what Liverpool actually do on the pitch. (And PSG definitely should feel the blow). Can PSG stand a chance against Reds? This is honestly fascinating, Liverpool make other teams play against themselves. So many of their opportunities come from defensive mistake assists. It's awesome.
Mane is a not selfish. He's just not great at making decisions when he's given too much time. He makes right decisions when he's fast. I guess he's similar to sterling in that way.
Something that i think you should have mentiond .. tottenham's fullbacks usually play really high of the pitch and the defendsive midfield (Dembele) drops back to help the defenders with possession and to support them when needed .. with normal pressing Salah and mane should have tasked with the fullbacks but Kloop told them to make pressure on the defenders and on Dembele . It was a risk because the fullbacks are usually free but as you explain the front 3 (Salah , Mane and Frimino) know how to block the passing options and the midfielders who know when to make pressure so tottenham didnt know how to expliot this spaces .. Really good explanation 😁😁 i subscribed
Is it just me or this guy clearly knows his football more than TNM?? Good job with the video and the jazz songs playing. And btw, I was actually surprised how easy it was for us to bypass Spurs’ midfield press.
Holy shit I love looking back through the match in these vids, it helps me understand why they're good and know what to look for when I watch football.
The kind of high intensity pressing which has even unsettled Pep's teams over the last few years and imo that says a lot. Another top notch video from you. I'm looking forward to PSG's tactics tomorrow, they might go long and try to bypass Liverpool's press, something that Tuchel can learn a lesson or two from Pep's Bayern which destroyed Klopp's Dortmund not too long ago. I was surprised when Pep decided not to use one of those tactics against them in the CL last season.
notice in the last play with mane going backdoor and making the run on left wing - he signals to robbo to move the ball to the other side. trippier relaxes for split second. and mane makes the quick move behind him. robbo knew exactly what he needed to do. brilliant chemistry.
Would be very interested in seeing some analysis on Trent Alexander Arnold's role in the team. Seems to enter the final third quite rarely, and it seems to be a central midfielder, mostly Milner I'll before his injury Oxlade Chamberlain, that occupies the space of a typical attacking Fullback, once the front three have narrowed up. Seems to sit there and play a lot of passes from deep, as opposed to Robertson, here is a much more orthodox attacking Fullback - obviously a very promising one that's already performing well. I imagine Trent's style of play is at least partially to do with him coming into the team from being a midfielder, his crossing doesn't seem to be great at the moment, but he plays some lovely long/drilled passes to the front players. Also non-Liverpool related, would be interesting to see some analysis of Marcos Alonso, very unorthodox full back. A lot of his game seems to revolve around his underlapping sometimes before the final third, to try and make space and one on ones for Hazard, then just being a nuisance in or just outside the box. Weird player because he doesn't look particularly fast or athletic, but obviously must have some of both of those traits, seems to keep running the whole game at least, but he's so lanky I can't really work how how quickly!
Thank you for this interesting work! I also want to know what are the ways to unlock or bypass these types of pressing? It would be great to see a video in his topic. Thank you in advance! :) I do not know football well but I try to think of solutions: wider positioning of the fullbacks to make Mane or Salah marking two men more difficult? a set of quick passes (like PSG vs United)? one extra midfielder goes back to help (if a defender follows, then use his left free space)? Looking forward to your expert opinions.
To counter the effectiveness of the high pressing in the game against Liverpool at Old Trafford last season, every time the ball was at de Gea’s feet (in the first half, at least) he played a relatively flat, direct ball up to Lukaku. Lukaku had purposely positioned himself against Lovren who, though only slightly shorter, was obviously deemed weaker in the air and also perhaps easier to bully than van Dijk (and he followed Lovren across the pitch even when Liverpool tried to remedy that by switching the CB positions). Rashford and Sanchez were instructed to make penetrating runs in between the full backs and centre backs hoping to latch on to any flick on’s. It certainly wasn’t Tiki Taka, but it turned out to be a pretty effective counter measure.
How about high players on the wings to take long ball from the back and organize it from there? One high+tall might be easy for Van Djik but 2 or 3 can be challenging.
being a Tottenham fan it really hurts to see but very good video. i have a question for you do you think klopp doesnt play with the midfield? the only midfielders job on offence is passing the ball to the front 3? im writing a paper on it it will help alot if you can answer
This is great analysis I think LFC can win the league if they play like this and win consistently Vvd is top defender with out him LFC will concede more goals
Next level analysis: I never knew “effort” and “defensive quality” were the secrets to pressing. The fact that Spurs were playing with the inverted fullback: irrelevant; not worth discussing how this changed the pressing situations. Effort is key. Smashing stuff here.
These tactics resulted in what should have been two additional goals. I love seeing the opportunistic goals basically stolen from the opponent. Totally demoralizes them. Gotta finish, my sons-if you want to win the league, and the UCL.
I don't know if Manchester City can win again this season with this Liverpool. Manchester City need to be at their peak form in terms of possession and have equilibrium- slow build up with well positioned players to prevent a counter attack. This Liverpool pressing will force mistakes and create counter attacks. This will be really interesting to watch in a few weeks.
In my opinion pressing comes at a very high cost. If you play against a top level opponent who is composed and won’t make defensive mistakes then the attackers just keep running around and they get depleted faster than the opponent. This was evident against Madrid in the UCL final. The second half was sluggish for Liverpool. Pressing wasn’t the only factor, of course Madrid was better overall. Against Madrid pressing did absolutely nothing.
Abdisamad Hassan why would I comment on something I didn’t watch? Of course I watched the game. Mo salah did have something to do with it. I clearly stated pressing was not the only factor.
Piotr Foot Dude I’m a HUGE fan. I love your Griezman analysis. I had been thinking that for years. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. I want to start an analysis channel too any advice? Software? anything?
@@abdisamadhassan2011 Liverpool was exceptional for the first 15 minutes. As a Madrid fan, I could see the team trembling. But, then the intensity reduced and was completely lost after Salah went out. Real has quality players and great players. They kept composed and controlled the game thereafter

Interested to see Tuchel's selection ahead of the match. Does he go back three to have another man in build up? Does he start Marquinhos or an aged Diarra? Excited to see.
You should have also pointed out that Spurs just plays out of the back very badly. Their is not enough players in their own half to play out of the back constructively. they allowed Pool to dictate how they play when it should have been the other way around
That is true. When we look at how Sarri, Biesla or Pep build out we realize how Pochetino had Spurs do it, it wasn't fully commited it was more let's try this but if it don't work kick it long while the others have commitited their players to play out hence they look to create a trap for players in the press and use the side where the press is less weak to escape it.
Klopp didn't win 2x Bundesliga with BVB by accident...:) i like his style of football. Hope he is going to be the new coach for germany when Löw retires
i personally dont agree with this, they have triggers to press and they try to box players in and create a trap normally with a midfeilder coming in to press just after someone has passed the ball this creats an overload normally and easy to create chances from
Psg will win exploit gegenpressing i think with their incredible offense,Until we make sure every chance is crucial and not waste em we can win. other than that we might as well kiss the 3 points goodbye.
Liverpool's pressing is great but tottenham were making some terrible pases, against a team like barca or madrid that can play out of the pressing they will have problems
Are people not really seeing the pattern? Tottenham are comfortable playing possesion, but every time pool faces a possesion team they struggle (ex city thrice) last season. Why?because they press intelligently, thats what this whole vid is about
@@helloitsme5812 yea I know their pressing is excellent, maybe the best in the world but still some of those passes were shocking. And city are not that good with their feet as people think, they have a lot of creativity but their execution isn't perfect apart from silva or de bruyne.Im just saying that if liverpool face a team that is perfect with their feet, they will struggle
i disagree because liverpool can set in different ways and it's pretty hard to bypass not only the midfield but the defence too as they have fast centre backs. Also if that was the case, then why did barca get trashed by liverpool 4-0 in preseason, ik it's only pre season but you can see liverpool would rather have less possession as they are more dangerous, try to pass your way out through a low block with liverpool's attackers waiting for any moment is just suicide waiting to happen. you can't be doing that against liverpool
