I watch Norwegian Football regularly, and one of our main weaknesses as a league is that almost every team sucks at pressing, there is always pressing by few players, but it’s always easy to pass around if you have any sort of plan, very frustrating to watch professionals be so bad at this concept
I share this notion. The combination of players having very varying abilty and willingness to press, and the lack of organized pressing is dragging the overall tempo of the game down so much. I'm convinced the key reason for Bodø/Glimts success this season has been their vastly superior ability and willingness to press hard and high, exposing just how bad players in the league (especially in the back four) are at retaining posession under pressure.
These videos are some of the most relaxing, informative, and well put together videos on the internet. From the background music, to the illustrations/animations, to the knowledge behind the videos themselves. Perfection.
I used to coach a very quick, but also pretty lazy, 3 man front line. Once they realized that through co-ordinated pressing they could create more scoring opportunities for themselves, they immediately bought into the idea. They were triggered to press whenever an opponent played a backwards pass in their own half... I had to keep it relatively simple for them! The first proper game we tried this in the opponents had kicked off and, of course passed back into their midfield. The 3 lads raced after the ball and the potential passing options, the oppo. midfielder upon seeing this also passed back to the centre back. He panicked and hastily attempted to pass back to the keeper, but put too much on it and scored an own goal!!!... less than ten seconds into the game! We were 4-0 up by halftime and all down to the pressing!
This video reminded me of the game at Etihad when Jesus and Sterling pressed Varane whenever he was on the ball resulting in the two goals scored by City Pep defiantly used press trapping on Varane that was some smart tactics by Pep and it truly paid off.
@@Tifo I appreciate your work guys, you guys have enlightened my knowledge and tactics of the game and showed me things that I truly didn't know before about this game and football has evolved into a game of mind and tactical prowess and it's no longer about the technical brilliance of individual players.🙏🏻
Yeah, I believe it's because pressing high leave space behind which especially deadly against team like united who can utilize space behind centerback with quick foward on the break. That's why united are usually find it more difficult against lower table team that using lowblock/conservative pressing. Also if you watch the match again, there are quite a huge gap of space between Lepzig defenders and midfield giving Pogba a lot of space to exploit before making through pass to Rashford upfront who done well to get off the marking of Upamecano and Konate. And the other time it was like the first goal, where the CB are too pushforward that are easily exploited by opposition. Lepzig done quite bad off the ball positioning on that game which can't compensate the risk of high press system.
@@rizzz___ yh the reason why man utd ran away with it is that they beat the press, therefore could put longballs forward to rashford, who could easily get in behing
I can now say I have obtained my coaching badge from tifo football. U guys should make an exam. There is one thing that I never see teams do when pressing and that is to press when the opposition have a throw-in this is a kind of unsettled 10-15 seconds of any team
Norwich City's third goal Manchester city in their 3-2 home win last season is a typical example of a pressing trigger. Have a look at that goal. Stones played the ball to Otamendi's weaker (left) foot which meant he was always going to take a torch before releasing the ball. That pass from Stones triggered Norwich's press and from it they scored their 3rd goal.
I remember last seasons FA Cup semi finals game between Man Utd and Chelsea Man Utd weak backline passing was exposed by Chelsea's pressing all goals came from weak passing that gave Chelsea easy scoring opportunities
I'm still waiting patiently for the introduction to set up certain traps and triggers in football manager - probably similar to how you'd set up set pieces combined with opposition instructions.
Hello Tifo, I would like to request AC Milan tactic explained. I'm really impressed by their form in recent games & really curious how they did a good job
They could add so many subtle but game changing additions and make the game much more dynamic and fun. Right now the only trigger available is press after heavy touch, but it's not very effective.
this was literally how Barcelona scored against Real Madrid in Las Vegas today. They pressed Militao into making an error and Raphinha dumped it in the top corner. That's great
Off course pressing is one of three keys for the attacking football style especially for possession based such as total football and tiki taka. It allows to steal and win ball whenever a team loses possession.
That's why team tend to struggle when the coach and press philosophy changes.. press become their instinct reaction and fail to counter their own instinct.. eg a switch from guardiola to ancelloti in Bayern.. from too instructive press to situational press.. and they struggled till they got flick(who's using another variation of guardiola's press)
I was coaching “the press” team concept to American kids (Yes, it was football not soccer) back in 2002/08. They’d pick up the concept due to a majority of them learning the art of pressing in other US Sports... Basketball etc etc. Maybe now since the game has evolved US players will finally have their big break???
I hope Frank Lampard sees this video so he can understand how to structure a press. His press is too erratic and extremely disorganised. How can you tell your team to press and then have the defensive line sooooo deep?
its a balanced approach in Frank's case. Personally I think Frank wants to use Thiago Silva as much as possible. And its not possible to play high line with Silva since he likes to defend deep
@@nsd781 Having the defenders set up deep and the forwards press high is not a balanced approach. It's a poor approach. If only 3-4 people press, then the opponent will find it easy to play around them and get upfield. Then because there's a huge gap between the forwards and the defense, they can run at the backline at speed, which is the worst thing you can imagine. That's why every good pressing team presses with the whole team, not just a couple of players. Vertical compactness allows the team to protect each other.
Chelsea need to forget about the press, it is not a foolproof system, and Chelsea actually have enough skills to beat the press, Lampards 'system' leaves their defense to open, especially if he only uses two midfielders
Flying Squirrel I have seen some really great performances from Chelsea using a midfield press. Organized properly, you can achieve a stronger counterattacking threat as the midfielders are in a better position to support the strikers for very rapid progression, while achieving sufficient defensive compactness. I think the problem for Chelsea is their back line is not quite solid enough for this, but Mendy between the sticks will boost their confidence. There are options other than high press or low block, after all.
A lot of the younger fans will think Pep started The Press Tactic around 06? I remember Ian Rush as the spearhead of Liverpools press back in 88' England under Hoddle 97/98 were also employing this & were excellent exciting Team still Gutted The Hod Got the sack!!!
