  • Rock of Ages: An unauthorised story on the Rolling Stones traces the personal ups and downs, professional twists and turns in the epic journey of the world’s most enduring rock band.
Cast: Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Ronnie Wood. Brian Jones.
The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. Diverging from the pop rock of the early 1960s, the Rolling Stones pioneered the gritty, heavier-driven sound that came to define hard rock.
Their first stable line-up was vocalist Mick Jagger, multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones, guitarist Keith Richards, drummer Charlie Watts, and bassist Bill Wyman. During their formative years Brian Jones was the primary leader: he put the band together, named it, and drove the sound and look of the band. After Andrew Loog Oldham became the group's manager in 1963, he encouraged them to write their own songs.
Jagger and Richards became the primary creative force behind the band, alienating Jones, who developed a drug addiction that interfered with his ability to contribute meaningfully. He left the band shortly before his death in 1969, having been replaced by guitarist Mick Taylor, who in turn left in 1974 to be replaced by Ronnie Wood. From Wyman's departure in 1993 to Watts' death in 2021, the band continued as a four-piece core, with Darryl Jones playing bass on tour and on most studio recordings.

Charlie was an enigma. Great drummer, but not flashy; no big kits or drum solos; a quiet man but amazingly witty; one of the biggest rock drummers in history - hell he kept time for the Rolling freakin Stones for 50 years! - but was a true jazz player at heart. Just so damn cool. RIP Charlie Watts; you are deeply missed.

After this documentary I realized, how often a Stones-era came to an end and at the same moment they re-invented themselves and came up as a new kind of a Rock'n Rolling Stones - and after all those years (60), they are a grand institution of their own image.
But there is one thing, which never died and still exist - their deep love to play music. It's only rock'n roll but I like it, like it - yes, I do!

From the off they made a great decision getting Charlie in..all the best RnB acts from the states used jazz drummers because that's all there was..there was no such thing as an 'RnB drummer' per say..it's what gives RnB it's swing and groove..Charlie did all that but kept it simple..he was a class act to be sure..an inspiration to many then and now..any drummer worth his salt will agree..RİP Charlie..you will be truly missed!

Brian Jones was a very gifted and talented musician. His love for Mississippi Delta and Chicago blues spawned the Rolling Stones in tribute to one of his idols Muddy Waters.
His vision for spreading the gospel of blues music to an uninitiated global audience was ill-fated from the beginning. The demons he fought along the way robbed him of the greatness he never achieved, along with his life. Rest in peace.

Brian was a very accomplished musician, so well spoken wth that distinctive lisp. Without Brian there would have been no Stones & I feel the rest of the band treated him badly & the reason he turned to drugs.
It's so sad Brian's life ended so soon & wth the right treatment & respect im sure Brian could have turned his life around.
I'm not biased as Brian wasnt my fave Stone but just see it the way it was. I loved the Stones as a schoolgirl & now as a pensioner still love them. I've seen them live a few times & they were legend. Just a terrible tragedy Brian was not in his rightful place to this very day.

    • @itallia666
      @itallia666 3 роки тому +3

      @@freebee8221 yes i agree, however in the 60's & 70's there was such a cultural & musical
Explosion & drug culture became synonymous with the territory no one was aware of the damage that continued, long term use & the experimentation of different stimuli would have. It was a time of revolution & excess
I was an art student in the early 1970's & i can vouch for the Amazing times they were & how being young & never being aware anything we did then could have devastating results.
While it was a privilege to be young in those times, the incredible amount of brilliant music exploding from everywhere the freedom my generation had to explore things that were all new to us. It was very easy to get sucked in to areas that was hard to break free from.
Today we have rehab places, people who are experienced in weaning people off drugs or harmful substances & families made aware of signs that a young member needs counselling
Back then, no one thought this way. I took mind altering substances mainly to experiment in my art work. I even remember some of my art lecturers smoking dope outside like you would smoke an ordinary cigarette today. If our elders did this, why would we consider it wrong? And that was just for ordinary people! When you got to the celebs, rock musicians, lord knows what the temptations were! & while its easy to condem those times from yr easy chair today, it was different being there. As i said, many musicians have been able to kick the habit by rehabs etc.
Brian was a complicated person full of doubts & overshadowed by mick & keith. Many very talented artists are vulnerable, sensitive because of the demands of their creativity & so are prone to drugs/alcohol to cope with their lives. I lost a few very very talented friends who were so creative in art or music but couldn't cope with life & drugs so dont you sit & pontificate.
Drugs are bad & yes no one forces you to take them but when yr young & in the times of the 60's 70's & 80's wanting to fit in for whatever reasons, it was a deadly trap for some.
I wasnt that fussed with drugs after a few LSD trips & didnt smoke dope. My family life was excellent & supportive, homelife wonderful, great mates so maybe my need for drugs wasnt applicable, who knows?
With better knowledge of drugs & help to kick them maybe Brian could have had help. Thats all i meant.

@@itallia666 they never got Brian into drugs 😂 and they were kids themselves and Brian was older. Families can’t even do anything about family members with addiction problems nevermind band mates that never even really liked him that much and why would they like him he hit women.

It's funny how The Stones were seen as The Anti Beatles. Whereas The Beatles were portrayed as clean cut & wholesome The Stones were the gritty dirty sex n drugs fuelled Rockers. Yet when u hear Mick talk around the 10.45 minute mark he sounds like a posh english schoolboy. So different to the 'hard' working class accents of The Beatles.
It's incredible how good marketing can shape your public image to such an extent everyone believes it.

Great documentary. It's fun to play with street view and find these homes; at the 13:59 mark, finding Mick's old home - if it was his - was easy. Other band members also owned houses on that street. Those places are valued between £8million and £11million or more, today.
