- Rock of Ages: An unauthorised story on the Rolling Stones traces the personal ups and downs, professional twists and turns in the epic journey of the world’s most enduring rock band.
Cast: Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Ronnie Wood. Brian Jones.
The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. Diverging from the pop rock of the early 1960s, the Rolling Stones pioneered the gritty, heavier-driven sound that came to define hard rock.
Their first stable line-up was vocalist Mick Jagger, multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones, guitarist Keith Richards, drummer Charlie Watts, and bassist Bill Wyman. During their formative years Brian Jones was the primary leader: he put the band together, named it, and drove the sound and look of the band. After Andrew Loog Oldham became the group's manager in 1963, he encouraged them to write their own songs.
Jagger and Richards became the primary creative force behind the band, alienating Jones, who developed a drug addiction that interfered with his ability to contribute meaningfully. He left the band shortly before his death in 1969, having been replaced by guitarist Mick Taylor, who in turn left in 1974 to be replaced by Ronnie Wood. From Wyman's departure in 1993 to Watts' death in 2021, the band continued as a four-piece core, with Darryl Jones playing bass on tour and on most studio recordings.

Charlie was an enigma. Great drummer, but not flashy; no big kits or drum solos; a quiet man but amazingly witty; one of the biggest rock drummers in history - hell he kept time for the Rolling freakin Stones for 50 years! - but was a true jazz player at heart. Just so damn cool. RIP Charlie Watts; you are deeply missed.
Charles Robert Watts. Rest In Peace. Rab 🕊

Charlie relaxes by playing jazz; what a statement on jazz!
You have jazz and Jazz. Charlie plays a third sort, "jazz".

I love to hear Mic Jagger's speaking voice as much as his singing voice.
Me too. Classiest badass's in Rock n' Roll music. Not to mention being a cultural icon on many levels. Their accomplishments are no small thing.
All my life there has been the sun moon and the fabulous Rolling Stones.
ME TOO,OH YES,ROLLING STONES, FOREVER. Walter B.Memphis. ☠😛🌎🎸🎷🎼🎵
No kidding. I adore them.
After this documentary I realized, how often a Stones-era came to an end and at the same moment they re-invented themselves and came up as a new kind of a Rock'n Rolling Stones - and after all those years (60), they are a grand institution of their own image.
But there is one thing, which never died and still exist - their deep love to play music. It's only rock'n roll but I like it, like it - yes, I do!
Rest in peace Charlie.
Cont. * After this new tour is over. Mick and Keith will announce that due to Charlie's passing. The Rolling Stones are no more. The Rolling Stones RIP. I love you Charlie. I am deeply saddened to hear of your death. You had class and style and skills behind the drum kit. You always made me laugh or smile.

The first CD my mum bought me was the Stones when I was 6 years old. I listened to that thing on repeat until I physically couldn’t.
Greatest Rock and Roll band in the world. Saw them back in the late 70s..

They never stopped rolling , rock on ❤️🎸
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT ,GREAT COMMENT,SOOT ON!!Walter B.Memphis. 😛☠🌌👍🎸🎷💯
From the off they made a great decision getting Charlie in..all the best RnB acts from the states used jazz drummers because that's all there was..there was no such thing as an 'RnB drummer' per say..it's what gives RnB it's swing and groove..Charlie did all that but kept it simple..he was a class act to be sure..an inspiration to many then and now..any drummer worth his salt will agree..RİP Charlie..you will be truly missed!
God bless your family Charlie
keef moon a jazz drummer?
bill wyman's interviews remind me of spinal tap. bless him.
Where have the years gone? So many fabulous artist have left us and Charlie Watts was in the top 5, all time greatest. I think I’d find it hard to perform with Jagger, but Charlie held them all together.
I pray you’re resting with our Lord, Charlie. You lived a dignified life.
Truly the greatest band in history. RIP Charlie. You will not be forgotten.
Rest in Heaven Charlie Watts, my deepest condolences to the Stones... He was the best and he will be missed... RIP genius 💙

Brian Jones was a very gifted and talented musician. His love for Mississippi Delta and Chicago blues spawned the Rolling Stones in tribute to one of his idols Muddy Waters.
His vision for spreading the gospel of blues music to an uninitiated global audience was ill-fated from the beginning. The demons he fought along the way robbed him of the greatness he never achieved, along with his life. Rest in peace.

In all honesty the Stones never missed him. Artisticly. People love the what could of been. His death was a tragedy someone dying young. But people over romanticize him artisticly

Saw them first on stage in Albert hall 1966 next time in Stockholm 51 year later They still are fantastic and will be in the history of rock and roll.
Uh, no shit.
Can you review a little bit about the show in 1966?
Mick Jaggers Dad did a guest speakers tour of American Universitys' in the early 1970's. I saw him at UMass/Amherst.
The audience asked why the Stones didn't play their early 1963-69 repertoire. He told us that Allen Klein controlled all the early hits and that was that!
Jealous :)
The ultimate compliment I ever received was at the 2001 Society of Information Display (SID) in San Jose, CA. - a Scientific Symposium. The guy who checked my credentials said I looked like Charlie Watts. It was about flexible OLED displays. Now, (OLEDS) are a reality with foldable smart phones.... Cool.
I cant imagine The Stones without Charlie Watts. Driving force. RIP Charlie

No he wasn't. Certainly not by other drummers.
Bill Wyman also
When Mick presented Charlie he always had tha greatest ovation.
@@cathsalazar9930 Bill Wyman was very very important to the stones sound I wish the stones never continued without Bill he is an amazing bass-player who can never be replaced when he left I thought the band ended u can ask Leo Lyons Geddy Lee or ask any bass-player no Wyman no Stones and now Charlie he’s no longer with us the band is over finished and I’m a huge stones fan the whole band should of called it quits after steel wheels retire

Brian was a very accomplished musician, so well spoken wth that distinctive lisp. Without Brian there would have been no Stones & I feel the rest of the band treated him badly & the reason he turned to drugs.
It's so sad Brian's life ended so soon & wth the right treatment & respect im sure Brian could have turned his life around.
I'm not biased as Brian wasnt my fave Stone but just see it the way it was. I loved the Stones as a schoolgirl & now as a pensioner still love them. I've seen them live a few times & they were legend. Just a terrible tragedy Brian was not in his rightful place to this very day.
@Proud Straight White Christian Conservative i just hate to see talented people forgotten & others take the credit. The Stones shy off talking about Brian, im not saying they had anything to do wth his demise but....
I love the Stones always have but theres just that niggle about Brian under the surface 🤔
Shoddily treated to say the least
nah you cant blame anybody else for your drug use
@@freebee8221 yes i agree, however in the 60's & 70's there was such a cultural & musical
Explosion & drug culture became synonymous with the territory no one was aware of the damage that continued, long term use & the experimentation of different stimuli would have. It was a time of revolution & excess
I was an art student in the early 1970's & i can vouch for the Amazing times they were & how being young & never being aware anything we did then could have devastating results.
While it was a privilege to be young in those times, the incredible amount of brilliant music exploding from everywhere the freedom my generation had to explore things that were all new to us. It was very easy to get sucked in to areas that was hard to break free from.
Today we have rehab places, people who are experienced in weaning people off drugs or harmful substances & families made aware of signs that a young member needs counselling
Back then, no one thought this way. I took mind altering substances mainly to experiment in my art work. I even remember some of my art lecturers smoking dope outside like you would smoke an ordinary cigarette today. If our elders did this, why would we consider it wrong? And that was just for ordinary people! When you got to the celebs, rock musicians, lord knows what the temptations were! & while its easy to condem those times from yr easy chair today, it was different being there. As i said, many musicians have been able to kick the habit by rehabs etc.
Brian was a complicated person full of doubts & overshadowed by mick & keith. Many very talented artists are vulnerable, sensitive because of the demands of their creativity & so are prone to drugs/alcohol to cope with their lives. I lost a few very very talented friends who were so creative in art or music but couldn't cope with life & drugs so dont you sit & pontificate.
Drugs are bad & yes no one forces you to take them but when yr young & in the times of the 60's 70's & 80's wanting to fit in for whatever reasons, it was a deadly trap for some.
I wasnt that fussed with drugs after a few LSD trips & didnt smoke dope. My family life was excellent & supportive, homelife wonderful, great mates so maybe my need for drugs wasnt applicable, who knows?
With better knowledge of drugs & help to kick them maybe Brian could have had help. Thats all i meant.
@@itallia666 they never got Brian into drugs 😂 and they were kids themselves and Brian was older. And Brian wasn’t exactly a nice person , he was so bad and unliked Keith took his girlfriend and EVERYONE was happy for her and him. I don’t know what you think they could of done for him? Families can’t even do anything about family members with addiction problems nevermind band mates that never even really liked him that much and why would they like him he hit women.
Cool 😎😎😎😎
FYI for those commenting on "no stones music..." There's no Stones music in the doc because it's unauthorized, so it would involve copy write violations.
FYI: "Copyright" is one word ... so ya know :)
The Stones in the Park was an absolute awesome concert 🙌
I honestly believe Mick and Keef have lived the coolest life
Enjoyed! Impressive they are still rocking.
Being a long time Stones and Kinks fan, didn't know until a couple years ago that Kinks drummer Mick Avery was originally the Stones drummer . Pretty cool.
Thanks a lot! Here the 4:3 format is preserved. Just saw parts of Stones documentary CROSSFIRE HURRICANE - a catastrophe - all crippled images, 4:3 blown up to 16:9, thus missing one third of the frame. A stupid, barbaric treatment of archive stuff
The Stones roll out ♥️💙❤️

Great, great doco, insight and narration-thanks.
I did love Exile on main Street it was lovely it pummeled my soul!!!

Old men still rocking! Good for them!
Some just don't see how ridiculous they appear, as very beat up looking oddities. Gotta know that.
Hello
2022 Rolling Stones 60 th anniversary. And I am sure, we will get a world Tour,....keep on rocking.
Brian Jones came up with the name of the band and he is remembered.
💯
Andrew did a great job by positioning the Stones opposite the Beatles . By making them the bad boys, it attracted the attention of the rock and rolling set who preferred the rougher sounds of rhythm and blues . And today, they're still going strong.
I loved both bands from the start, the sixties where brilliant, with fleetwood Mac and the great Peter Green who has just died, Peter was still performing with the Splinter band
Andrew was a brilliant manager. CUT AND DRY .
Far from strong.time to give it up doncha think
A man of many faces. Smart man hope he enjoys many more colorful years. Go Mick🎉

No stones music but a great doc. Great footage and not the typical already known matrl
I love that whole Brian Jones Stones era...
Me 2 best ever no doubt!
Charlie Watts @3:05 😂, usually always holds his cool
Mick about how we might look back at the then current cannabis laws, and find them ridiculous, was right on the money.
it's amazing how you can make a 45-minute documentary about the Rolling Stones, which somehow doesn't feature any of their music at all...
Without their permission to use their music it will get taken down
Yes a big achievement by film maker, et all...
So sad to see Charlie go and so sad to see the first of the Stones go. They were and are the greatest.
The first of the Stones to go was Brian Jones . I think it was 1969 .
Brian was the first to go, but the Stones were largely working without him for a while before they asked him to leave. He was no longer part of the band when he died and they had just begun

It's funny how The Stones were seen as The Anti Beatles. Whereas The Beatles were portrayed as clean cut & wholesome The Stones were the gritty dirty sex n drugs fuelled Rockers. Yet when u hear Mick talk around the 10.45 minute mark he sounds like a posh english schoolboy. So different to the 'hard' working class accents of The Beatles.
It's incredible how good marketing can shape your public image to such an extent everyone believes it.
Interesting insight. You are quite correct.

That's a misconception, the Beatles were never a soft band. Look at their beginnings in Hamburg. They went through all and beyond.
@@stealthbastard8837 ** Whoosh **
@@stealthbastard8837 They were intelligent beyond doubt, other than the drummers. Due to social and employment change structure, not to say mark inflation educationally. Then in 1962 the A levels of Brian Jones,
Jagger and McCartney were equivalent to a good US university degree.
They killed him through others. It was a commitment. They'll have to live with that
RIP Charlie, Russia is yearning and crying
Great documentary. It's fun to play with street view and find these homes; at the 13:59 mark, finding Mick's old home - if it was his - was easy. Other band members also owned houses on that street. Those places are valued between £8million and £11million or more, today.
Good stuff
