Part of it also seems to be the migration to short form content like TikTok, which I personally have no interest in, so it's sad to see views going that way and creators needing to divide their time between shorts and full videos.

I just discovered beauty UA-cam last year. I love it. I’m 33 and have never had anybody teach me about makeup. What beauty UA-camrs do is really important. I like hearing your honest thoughts and watching everybody’s techniques. I would never get my content solely from Tik Tok. I much prefer long form to short form. Shop my stash videos are some of my favorite to watch.

Hi Jen! I am definitely not burned out on makeup. I will say what I like about it has changed. One thing about my own viewing that has changed is that with your videos I would rather wait until I can give your video my undivided attention because I really care about what you have to say and you are so comprehensive with your reviews I want to be ‘present.’ I wonder if others feel that same. Also, now that I have a larger collection I am growing more interest in project panning and using makeup up completely. That said, I still enjoy new reviews. What I really enjoy that you do is you compare new items, especially eyeshadow palettes with many others which helps a lot with purchasing decisions. Ultimately, I am trying to slow down how much I purchase. So reusing older palettes and showing new looks, GRWM, rankings, all of it is great! I recommend that you do a broad variety instead of just this or that. Also, your new story time series has been refreshing! As far as influencing the brands that don’t send you PR are crazy because your swatches are amazing! 😀

I’ve dabbled a little on TikTok but can’t get behind “beauty tok” because their reviews aren’t reviews. There’s no way you can tell how a product performs in a minute or less. I’m 33 and still love YT videos, so I’ll take a nice, lengthy video here than a short one on TikTok. You also get to see how genuine people are-like you!

Thank you for making me feel less crazy for not getting the hype around Pat McGrath's eyeshadow! I chalked up my ambivalence to being 50+ with very hooded lids but it's a relief to hear that you had a similar experience. I bought Lorac's Fairytale Forest based on your recommendation and I love it much more than my PMG (for a fraction of the price!).

I love your longer videos. If they post when I’m not at work I try to watch right away. Recently I was out of state visiting my sis in Washington and got behind so just now catching up. I found that I was subscribed to too many beauty channels and decided to pare down to just the ones I love the most, yours being #1 💜 I would watch all your content because even if I’m not super interested in the topic, I enjoy your style and the fresh take you bring to any subject. I understand that you are a more private person and don’t want to bring your family into the youtube world, but I think a lot of us feel like we’re your friends as weird as that sounds, and we would love to get a few glimpses into your life, whether that’s a house tour, some favorite recipes, or taking us along on a typical day 😊

    • @JenPhelps
      @JenPhelps  2 роки тому

I definitely understand that, it makes sense! I did take you guys along on some typical days during my Vlogmas last year. 😊 But I think letting people into your life invites more criticism, for example, commenting on the things you eat, the way you keep your home or raise your children. The influencers who are the biggest targets on the gossip sites are the ones who show more of their life and I don't know if I'm ready to handle that. Even when I got home from my trip and shared some of that back in April during a GRWM,, I mentioned that I got Covid and there were so many people attacking me saying that I must not be vaccinated (I am!) and that I shouldn't have traveled. So it's one of those things that's difficult for me, even though I also think of you guys as friends and would love to share more about my life...there's a reason why I don't. 🥰❤️

For what it's worth, I think you have been taking your channel in the right direction. You have been adding in story telling type content and Q&A content. I also think venturing outside of make up some, maybe into face products or gadgets, bath and hair products or even just a haul with some of the makeup, hair, body type products but also including everyday life products you found and love or those you have loved for a long time. Finally, I like to watch makeup videos where old and/or new products alike are used.... Just some ideas. I hope it helps

I watch every video you make….maybe a bit late because I’m busy but you are my favorite. The way you swatch products and describe them are like no one else. I went on a no buy for makeup this year because I took inventory of everything I had and it is ridiculous for the average person. I agree with a lot of what you said. I'm in my 30s now and just dont have the time to watch everything I want as soon as it comes out, I usually have set days I can catch up on. I appreciate the more in depth reviews, comparisons and with hooded eyes I always like more tutorials. I also feel like many brands seem to release palettes catering more towards the advertising/views potential that what actually makes sense for building wearable looks. More and more I find myself thinking a new release is so visually appealing but as artwork, not anything I could use as makeup.

I wore makeup before but didn't have much and didn't try new stuff very often. I do believe that the younger crowd probably watches way more TikTok and Instagram reels and that's two big competitors for viewers. Several of the beauty UA-camrs I watch are starting to post a lot of Vlogs and those don't really interest me very much. Thank you so much for all the great informative videos!

I have no interest in TikTok; but I also find myself having less time to watch beauty UA-cam. I didn’t care about makeup until a few years ago, so I used long form videos to learn how to apply and what to buy. Now that I have a ton of makeup, I don’t watch as much; I also watch creators less when they pivot to mostly high end products (which happens a lot as channels grow.). I appreciate your commitment to drugstore and a wide variety of products.

I don't think you need to stress about coming up with new content ideas. Your videos (especially the dupes) are the best out there, and I doubt there will be any shortage of new content in the near future. You seemed uncomfortable with the story-telling, and I was glad you took the last one down, it wasn't your brand. You do you, and don't worry, you are so good at it!
I suspect the decline in views may also be due to the pandemic. People are back to work and don't have as much time, and the market is probably saturated.
BTW, my Hourglass Veil primer dried out, and I figured I'd try the Joah on your recommendation (I found it online at Walmart), and I like it better than the Hourglass. Thank you for the suggestion!

Also I know this doesn't go for everyone but as much as people say they're exhausted with all the makeup but most creators say the videos that get views are the new makeup videos. I’ve been really enjoying the youtuber hannah bc she promotes using what you have and being more selective about what you purchase. I think w the minimalist trends and people being more cautious about their spending this kind of video is valuable. I know back in the day everytime I watched a video I’d want to buy something. I’ve gotten much better about that now but I’m sure there’s probably a lot of people who spent way too much on makeup. And are fearful of watching video sfor fear of spending money. So I think videos that promote using what you have are fun. Especially when you have a huge collection

One area that you may not have thought about with regard to the downturn in makeup channel views... I really think the chaos of the last two years has had a huge impact on all things extra... the uncertainty.... the constant talk about food shortages, and the price hikes of every single thing. I know I really put a lot of thought into any extra purchases, so much more than a few years ago. I need to make sure I don’t over spend on anything that isn’t essential. As a result, I don’t watch as many videos focused on products to buy, the “you need this in your life....” videos. I am more interested in going back to shop my stash, and tutorial type videos. I know for me it has become less about the products and more about the thoughts and opinions of people I like or trust, kind of like how it is with real-life friends.

Hi Jen...I used to get my makeup tips from magazines too. I never could understand what the outer v was until You Tube! I still enjoy seeing new makeup videos...it helps me know what to buy by hearing about the texture, how it wears, is it opaque or sheer, etc. It was so disappointing to but a product that looked good in the package but applied totally differently than what I expected. Still might be a great product , it just may not be for me. I like dupe videos a LOT. I would rather spend less on a product if I can get the same result. Love you and your channel!

Okay I am just not going to be a Tik Toc watcher, probably ever. I am really glad to see drugstore dupes & shop my stash. I kinda realized a couple years ago that UA-cam had replaced TV commercials for beauty products. I honestly got caught up in the hype of this mentality, every new whatever is so great go buy it immediately. I think that mentality has slowed down after we all started seeing our makeup collections becoming ridiculous. I am 60 and also used to save my allowance/babysitting money for makeup so I will always love it!!! 💄

When I was new to watching YT I fell for believing everything. I would go out and buy a product and wonder why it didn't work like it did for the person in the video. It took me a while to realize how they can use filters, lighting etc.

@@theresas2520 you are absolutely correct! This goes with the “commercial “ effect, we saw all this amazing results which were not always authentic.

Usually Jen, if you don't like it I don't buy it. Same with Emily Noel too. I don't buy names either Jen. I will wait to see a dupe for it. I do like the Stone Cold palette too by Colourpop too. When I started watching makeup on UA-cam then I started buying makeup but UA-cam is the only media I watch. I have quite a collection of makeup and now I have decided I don't really need to by any more makeup. I have too much already. I love your dupes video and I really enjoyed this video. I learned so much I knew nothing about. Thank you so much Jen. Be well.

Great video Jen. Loved hearing your answers. You asked for feedback on ideas, so I'll be honest here (no hate mail please). Everybody is doing dupe videos. To get views, new ideas are critical. How about one doing one with your oldest pallete? Doing one with colors you couldn't dupe? Your least favorite, etc

I agree with you Jen on the No7 tubing mascara and the performance it cleans up nicely but it does absolutely nothing to my lashes. I love the brand though - foundations and skincare. The Maybelline fit me foundation was terrible - glad we're both on the same page. thank you for sharing your thoughts. I sure hope the YT cosmetic girls do not go away - I have been watching since 2016 and never tire of makeup reviews. all of you are great! I'm sure it's challenging finding new ways to refresh topics but please don't stop! I think I'll go and try the living proof hair care. I too have very fine hair it's short but challenging keeping the color bright and shiny but also ensuring it does not look limpy....

Jen, I do have a hair product that I've used for many many years and it's the only thing that makes me curls hold. It's called Redken Hotsets. I told me sister in law about it and she has thin, fine hair and she now uses it and it's the only thing that holds curl in her hair. You use it after your hair is dry right before curling that section of your hair (just spray one section at a time). It's worth a try but I swear by it!!

I'm in my early 30 and actually like long video. I like to listen while I'm getting ready in the morning or when I'm working and no need a complete silence to concentrate. That is why I don't use tik tok. Pesonally I think bing watching short clip is wasting my time and when I want to relax I still like to watch a reasonably long and detail video. Probably just me. I do respect people who like to watch short video they have their own reason. Plus there are still options for people like me. This video is a good example. I like your channel. 🥰

Very interesting. I'm 54 and cannot imagine ever losing interest in makeup.. but, I have told myself that next year is going to be a NO BUY year.. I'm overwhelmed and am going to clean/purge/shop my stash as I know I have so much I'm actually unaware of. Sad, but true. I want to start using things and playing around with what I do have as I know even when the newest thing comes out, there is close to a 100% chance I have something comparable. So maybe a video like that could be fun?

Ask someone that is aging I am starting to watch more UA-cam related to my age. I still love watching makeup application for aging skin products for aging skin and I think there's a niche in that area to be had.

I love your eye look today!! I have hooded eyes too and one thing I found that helps is to avoid putting any super dark eye shadow or eyeliner under the eye; I will sometimes add a bit in the outer third to make my eyes look more open. Also, focusing eyeliner on the outer third of the top lid can help too. That way the eyelid is not overpowered or hidden by the eyeliner. And I agree that bright shadows definitely help hooded eyes as well as a good eyeshadow primer to prevent all the creasing!

I think tictok is new and gratifies quickly so people are over there (for now). It’s like mini commercials. I do think people will return to the full format of UA-cam. It’s more informative and interesting. It’s also like a community, it’s more personal. The watcher gets to know who there watching so there’s a strange connection lol. You have a nice variety of content so just keep it up. If your views have dropped I believe watchers will return. I think Tictok views will drop and or people will make room for both.

PMG is my fav. But I think it's how I put my makeup on. Hers stays on all day w/o fading or shedding. When I wear Huda it's gone by evening and ND mattes shed all down my face. I use the PMG mattes as eyeliner and punch it on and it stays. Just love it.

I haven't jumped into the TikTok trend yet. YT is still a platform that I like more because I see it as a place where yters can be creative in their talents and skills that is more than 1 minute. I just enjoy a good talk (girl talk, lady talk, friend talk), use any makeup you have (new or old), and create a look that you want. I want to see your creativity shine and not follow new tiktok trneds that gets old by tomorrow. I want to play a video that plays for 5 or more minutes and listen as if I'm listening to a friend. GL!

I am 54 & have loved makeup since I was a child. I prefer glamour looks, but love it all. My skin used to be very oily, but since I've gotten older my skin has gotten dry. I fear powder now but feel like I need to set my under eye routine. (Hiding bags with contour colors, then foundation). What is the difference between setting powder & finishing powder? And what is your preference & favorites?

With all the stupid amount of makeup I have I’ve always wanted to try cp but still haven’t which is crazy because the brand is so inexpensive. Everyone talks about the super shock eyeshadow but they seem so glittery. Can you suggest any not so glittery ones?

Hi Jen, I’m a somewhat new subscriber maybe the last 6 mos, could be a year, lol...time goes so fast these days I just can’t keep track. I’m 54 and have worn make up since my teens but I never had more than what would squish into a cosmetic bag, maybe a few lipsticks. Then in 2015 I had a hysterectomy I knew I was going to be laid Up for 6 weeks so I bought myself my first iPad and after some serious down time and not even getting out of bed I finally decide I was going to see what this “you tube” was all about. At that time I thought it was a weird platform for people to upload silly videos of people taking their horses thru the drive thru and cat videos I had NO idea the envy of videos on beauty, skin care, hair care, fashion, home decor and on and on and on...I can honestly say that the enjoyment that I get from these videos is unmatched to much else I do for entertainment in my life. I now have a fairly large make up collection and I do see it as a collection. I buy things that are pretty and I like to just look at, to me there is no difference between collecting makeup or collecting china figures.
I used to LOVE Lisa Stevens “ shop my stash” videos but she no longer makes beauty related content. I’d love for you to take that up, I feel the big huge gap in the content that I wish I saw a whole lot more of is, using products that are not new. As someone else said, many of us have quite a large collection at this point, I suggested to someone who has a pretty large following on IG and TT that she do a throwback series, put it out to her followers and ask them to send in pallet ideas to be used in the the series. I guess she liked the idea as she has done it a couple times, I’d love to see someone on you tube do this as a weekly video, subscribers can suggest products that are not current and would love to see a new look using that pallet ( I’d say mostly these are eye shadow pallets and face pallets ). I think this would be a really great way to interact with your viewers and also help us think about those products we invested in and are still great, but we don’t see influencers use anymore. I suggested this to a few woman I watch here on YT and no one has seemed interested then someone said to me that the main reason no one is really that interested is because if it’s something people already have for the most part...then there is nothing for the influencer to sell in the video. That really kinda sat me back a bit. I guess I’m just not with it enough I thought influencers where still making a pretty good amount on views/ clicks ads. I truly appreciate affiliate links and if someone has taken the time to use a product then give an honest review then I am more than happy to use their affiliate links
So I guess for me I’d love to see more content using what we already have and showing new and interesting things without investing quite as much money, into new new new. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still gonna buy new and keep looking for reports on what new what’s hot and what’s not. Sorry this has turned into a novel, i can’t imagine getting the same entertainment value from vids on tic tok. I do go there occasionally but it’s mostly for dance videos, lol.

Jen, I’m late to the UA-cam world, but I love your videos. My favorites are your hauls, dupes, and your Christmas/holiday ones. With your videos, I always feel like sitting down with a cuppa, and watching a friend do her thing, kinda thing. It’s why I love your page, and Emily Noel’s page so much. It’s relaxing, it’s fun, and i learn! have been slowly going thru all of your videos and have purchased so much based on your recommendation, and never once being disappointed. Not just on makeup, but the lalalicious (sp?), the ILNP nail polish, and now I’m going to have to look up that curling iron. Have you ever done videos like blush collection, or bronzer collection, etc? I love all your eyeshadow collections, but what about individual collections? I wouldn’t know how that would be for ratings, views and such, but for me, that would be fun.

This was a great video and I'm glad I watched your hair tutorial. It's so doable, thank you. Just to share my two cents FYI, I only watch UA-cam not tick tock. I love your shorts they're very good compared with others. If a video is about 12 minutes or less I will stop when I'm doing and watch it ASAP. If it's more than that I usually wait until bedtime to watch or I skip it altogether. I've heard creators say that it's better not to start watching a video and then quit part way through due to the algorithm, so that's why I may choose not to watch a long form one
