Safe to cook sour food in Brass?
We get a lot of questions about whether it's safe to cook sour food in brass, and we're here to answer that question once and for all: yes, it is completely safe to use tin-coated brass to make any sour food! However, we do not recommend using a masala box for salt, as salt can react with brass due to its composition. It is totally safe to use ghee pot without tin coating since fats do not react with brass. However, avoid putting a spoon that has come in contact with salt in it, as that might turn the ghee pot green.
From the everyday family dinner to a special occasion, utensils made of brass and copper have been a staple in many kitchens for centuries. But if you want to ensure your meals with these materials are safe and toxin-free, there are certain do’s and don’ts you need to keep in mind.
Do:
1. Make sure to always buy high-quality, food-grade brass and copper.
2. Clean your utensils regularly and dry them off after use.
3. Give them a quick rinse with lemon juice and water before and after every use to remove any traces of oxidation.
4. Use separate sponges for cleaning copper and brass utensils.
Don’t:
1. Don’t use anything abrasive to clean them, as this could cause damage.
2. Avoid using chlorine or bleach products.
3. Don’t leave them immersed in water or other liquids, as this can cause corrosion.
4. Don’t soak them in vinegar as this will cause them to lose their shine.
By following these simple tips, you can maintain your brass and copper utensils in good condition to enjoy for many years to come!
