Beautifully shot and explained. I've never heard of this stitch before -- it's gorgeous! I've always done "double stockinette" that comes out as the "knit" side on one side, and the "purl" on the other-- just like regular stockinette stitch, only much thicker and warmer. (And done with worsted and large needles, it looks like ribbing on one side, and garter on the other -- very useful for warm hat bands.) So this was a revelation, and I can't wait to try it. Thank you!
This is AMAZING Thank you so much! I've been scratching my head trying to figure out how to do a reversible scarf with a pattern on both sides that didn't involve having to do double knitting or brioche - and this is perfect. Its just that little bit easier than trying to remember what to do for double knitting!
Your video and explanation are so perfectly clear and easy to follow. You go slowly enough so that I can follow and you don't say a bunch of extraneous junk that has nothing to do with the pattern. I am really impressed with your channel and I have subscribed. Thanks.
I just happened to be poking around UA-cam, and found your channel. I've been knitting for many, many years and have never tried this technique(too intimidated). You make it look so easy! You lady have just earned a new sub! Along with the fact that I have kept my brushings from my cats' fur(I didn't think anyone else was as weird as me keeping the fur in baggies, with hopes of doing something with it one day, lol!
This is THE BEST tutorial for this stitch that I've ever seen! Thank You very much! The other tutorials omitted steps that You made very clear! I've been subscribed to Your channel for about 2 years but never came accross this stitch til yesterday. This morning I tried your tutorial and BINGO I got it on the 1st try Thank you! Plus you knit with the yarn on the left as I do, it makes it easier for me Thank You 😊🤗🌹❣
Thanks so much for your video.I am going to attempt to knit my first tea cozy and thought instead of just knitting this would make it more insulating. Thanks again and I am so excited to try this .Lynne 👍🌺
Thank you! This was beautifully shot, and as always, crystal clear in the explanation. The lighting, the choice of yarn, made it very clear and easy to see exactly what you were doing. Your film technique has evolved to be even more worthy of your skills as a knitter and a teacher. Coincidence: I'd just been watching a few videos on tubular cast-on and bind-off techniques, and they would look fabulous with this stitch, because it's the stitch you use to set up for both the cast-on and bind-off techniques. I can't wait to try this! I've learned another stitch called "double stockinette", which is different -- looks like knit on one side, purl on the other, and is also very thick. It's what I've been using on every hat band ever since I learned it, because of the extra thickness over the ears. But I think this would be even better for that purpose. I've seen this stitch in other projects, and have never been able to figure out what it was called or how to do it. Thanks so much for this!
This is a wonderful video! You explain in a manner that is relaxing and encouraging. The quietness of the background makes it so much easier to appreciate what your hands are doing! Super well done! I'm going to try this for something soon! Too many WIPS right now! Bravo Sister knitter, well done!
I really like the way you move the yarn on your fingers! Can you do a video on that? Plus for this stitch, it looks like you're alternating between the purl and the knit stitch, am I right? Again, thank you for this prettty pattern! Man! I can't get over how you move that yarn on your left hand---that's so neat and organized!!
Thankyou for mentioning that you knit the slip stitches after the first row etc. Other tutorials I came across didn't say this so as a beginner I couldn't figure out why it looked different and got frustrated ^-^;
..as well as a blanket. I've been looking for a pattern that would make a warm blanket and this looks like the one. I hope I can find some complimentary stitch patterns to add a little design variation to the blanket. Not sure how easy it'll be too adapt other patterns, like cables, given the thickness of the double stockinette.
Is this possible for knitting in the round with circular needles? If so, how should I adjust? Thanks so much. And, thank you so much for your time to share your knitting tips :
Angharad Ceridwen click the link in the video description, on the stitch blog there is a tab under the blog photo with info on converting stitches for circular knitting.
I am so glad I found this tutorial. @_@ I'm new to crochet/knitting and I thought I'd start off my knitting career (har har har) with a scarf made in the round. It took me four days of screw-ups to figure it out, and then the slow, dawning realization that I hate knitting in the round. I used your tutorials to learn how to do a simple rib stitch with slipping the first stitch (purl), and I've been working on that. What I REALLY wanted, was a way to get the double-sided stockinette stitch without having to knit in the round, and voila! I guess I didn't know what to search for because I'd gone crazy trying to find a stitch like this, and stumbled on it randomly tonight, haha. So excited! Thank you so much for your videos, they're so informative for a newbie like me. :) What type of cast-on did you use for this? Does it matter? I was wondering which cast-on left the best bottom edge. And is it easy to switch colors with this stitch?
I just used the standard long tail cast on. I don't like working with more than one strand of yarn, too fussy for me. If I want more than one color, I use variegated or self striping. Much simpler for me :-)
Ai believe this is Brioche knitting. Been a while since i have done it but i recall this is how i done it and i used two different colors of yarn. Looks very pretty finished.
Thank you for this! I have got the stitch pattern well into my brain but I only get so far and somehow - due to butterfly brain - always get something wrong, sadly. I'm a fairly new-ish knitter. My Nana taught me ages ago so I know cast on, knit, purl, and cast off, but! I have unravelled this so many times needing to start over. I am sure there is a way to repair a missed or dropped stitch without needing to go back to nothing and starting over...or at least unravel the row with the mistake and place the loops back onto the needle? Can you please, please do a video[s] on how to do one or both? I tried to unravel to a point and replace loops on needle but made a dog's dinner of it! I would be ever so grateful if you could help! If not, I'll crack on the way I'm going. With any luck the scarf I want to make will be ready by winter next!
I usually correct my mistakes by working back on each row until I get to the place where I messed up as shown here: ua-cam.com/video/bT_vimOyg9s/v-deo.html
For this I recommend binding off in pattern as shown in the video; for the two color double knitting I recommend Lucy Neatby - she has classes on Craftsy and she also has a DVD, which you can purchase at her website. It is packed with double knitting info. www.lucyneatby.com/index.php?specific=1000058 I know she has videos here on YT, you may find bind off info on her channel.
I haven't tried this in the round, but it don't think you have to change anything to do so. After working row 1, just work in the slip/knit pattern and it should work.
Will this work on any pattern that is worked in stockinette stitch? I would like to make my new grandbaby a cuddle lovey and the square is done in stst. Thank you for a great, clear video. I will be subscribing to your channel!
I recommend getting Lucy Neatby's DVD on double knitting, done with two colors and worked differently than shown here. Here is a link to the DVD amzn.to/2f7hx85 and she also has a Craftsy class www.craftsy.com/knitting/classes/foundations-of-double-knitting/35709

Thanks for that. I learned the stitch on another YT tute, but it didn't cover casting off - which I was concerned about. Now I know. BTW are you left-handed? I've never seen anyone knit in your style (but I'm also not very experienced!!!) :)♡
No, I am not left handed, but do find that the continental knitting method is more comfortable than using my right hand (English/throwing). I find using my right hand very slow and also my tension is pretty bad.
Forgot to say I especially appreciate the way you explain how to read your work and figure out what to do.

Wow. I finally found a video that shows continental knitting. I prefer this method over the traditional english knitting
Thank you for much simpler way to do double stockinette! Your hands are poetry in motion!
Wow! Beautiful technique. Explained in depth, yet very easy to understand and implement. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us♥
Thank you for taking it slowly (but not too slowly) and explaining in detail! I have learned the stitch!!
Glad it was helpful!

I just would like to say thanks for having video of the double knit stitch I'm making a doggie blanket for my dog.... so thanks again....
Thank you for the bind off tip.
Thank you for all these stitches pattern. Very good job. Go on. Thanks a lot again I love your work and your channel you are my favorite.
You're very welcome!
Thank you for this stitch, I think it is really beautiful. It makes both sides look really good.
Love this stitch thank you so much for all you do.
You're very welcome!
Thanks...I saw this stitch for a scarf and wasn't sure so I watched your video and got it👍☺️
Best tutorial! You explained this so well. Thank you
this stitch is new to me (I am a beginner) and I am excited to try this. It was explained very well.
Awesome and very clever! Thank u sooo much for sharing...!!! Love it!!
Your technique is so smooth!
Ah, doubleknit! love it and it's fun! I usually do it with K and P though. Will try it this way.
I love this. I thought there must be a way to do it but had never thought any further. Than you very much for bringing it to my attention : )
Your tutorial is owesome
Very simple and easily explained
Thanks a lot.
Thanks for sharing, very helpful info 🎄🎄🎄
very nice explaining thank u very nice stitch
Thank you your instructions are very clear❤️
Is this double thick? And would one be able to almost separate the thicknesses into two sides?
Yes, it makes a double thick fabric. It is attached around the edges, if you pull in the center, the two pieces aren't connected.
I think one could make not only a baby blanket, one could make a dog blanket too what do u think???
I'm more of a crocheter but this pattern was easy and pretty thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Thankyou for mentioning that you knit the slip stitches after the first row etc. Other tutorials I came across didn't say this so as a beginner I couldn't figure out why it looked different and got frustrated ^-^;
If you carefully separate the slips and knits on separate needles, it forms a pouch.
Yes, that is so cool!
this looks very thick would make a great scarf thank you!
Yes, it would be perfect for a scarf.
..as well as a blanket. I've been looking for a pattern that would make a warm blanket and this looks like the one. Ai believe this is Brioche knitting. Been a while since i have done it but i recall this is how i done it and i used two different colors of yarn. Looks very pretty finished.
Marilyn Wiley brioche looks like ribbing. It is a smilar technique though
Wow wonderful

Thank you.
..Hello!
Your clips are very well-made. Thanks!
..please, besides someone mentioning scarf, what usage can I find for this technique?
Hot pad, hat, rug, blanket, bag, headband, mittens, shawl, cowl?
Great tutorial. LOVE the yarn! What yarn are you using?
It is my hand-dyed Cushy Worsted www.sapphiresyarn.com/collections/worsted
I absolutely love this stitch. The problem is I don't knit. Do you know if there is a crochet/tunisian crochet version of this double stockinette?
Sorry, I am not sure if there is a tunisian/crochet version of this.
regular stockinette stitch curls the yarn, does this cause any curling of the yarn?
No, this stays relatively flat; since you have stockinette on both sides, it kind of cancels out the curl.
What kind of cast on would you suggest?
I just used the standard long tail cast on for my sample, and it worked just fine.
Does this stitch make the fabric feel extra thick?
Yes, it does.
Question: what kind of cast off do u use on the double knit u're truly
For this I recommend binding off in pattern as shown in the video; for the two color double knitting I recommend Lucy Neatby - she has classes on Craftsy and she also has a DVD, which you can purchase at her website. Will this work on any pattern that is worked in stockinette stitch? I would like to make my new grandbaby a cuddle lovey and the square is done in stst. Thank you for a great, clear video. I will be subscribing to your channel!
I don't see why you couldn't work it into a pattern, it shouldn't be too difficult to do.
this is a cool pattern; however, it would be great to having this pattern in written form.
If you click link in the video description, it is available in written form. It also says in the beginning "written instructions available at...."
How do you bind off on this stitch
My preferred bind off is the knitted bind off, regardless of the stitch pattern; you can try whatever bind off you like.
how would you do this with 2 colors
I recommend getting Lucy Neatby's DVD on double knitting, done with two colors and worked differently than shown here. Here is a link to the DVD amzn.to/2f7hx85 and she also has a Craftsy class www.craftsy.com/knitting/classes/foundations-of-double-knitting/35709
Does this work in the round very well?
I haven't tried this in the round, but it don't think you have to change anything to do so. After working row 1, just work in the slip/knit pattern and it should work.
Hi, thank you for the video
I want to ask you, if i make a scarf with this stitch it will be still flat or will rotate from the sides?!
It should be nice and flat.
I find using my right hand very slow and also my tension is pretty bad.
iknitwithcatfur Oh, is that what continental looks like? I should try it some time. :)
