  • Learn to knit a very simple and easy stitch pattern for beginners using just knits and purls. Row 1 which is your right side row (the side you want seen) is all knit stitches, and Row 2 which is your wrong side row (the back of your work) is all purl stitches. If you don't know how to work a knit or a purl stitch, you should watch my tutorials on that first:
    Row 1 (right side): Knit across
    Row 2 (wrong side): Purl across

      I did nearly the same thing when I first started knitting, took me 5 years to realize I had been purling wrong the whole time. I had only ever been able to get garter, not stockinette.

      I was just about to comment this same thing im a crocheter of 12 years now and an all around crafter. I started knitting in 2014 but could only knit st. Now i can finally do both thanks to this video. I think its because you do english throwing and most tutorials are beg us to switch to continental style knitting but thanks a billion cause i just knitted 2 swatches practicing switching back and forth im so happy

    Just beginning to knit and could not get the purl stitch after watching many videos. Yours is the only one that made sense to me. Clear and concise and i could follow exactly how the working yarn is pulled over the needle. I’m still struggling with how to hold to get the right tension with the yarn in front but can actually now purl a row without thinking I am going to give up! Thank you.

    I’ll die, I just can’t use needles. It’s so hard, i don’t know but using the hook makes me enjoy knitting, while needles stress me out, specially because all your work can be thrown away if the yarn comes off the needles. I love how you make it look easy 😭

      I agree with the other commenters, it does get easier. I think the material of your needles matters when starting, if you're having trouble sliding your stitches across your needle then try metal needles, but if you find they slip off too easily then I would suggest bamboo or plastic needles to prevent them from sliding around as much. It takes some practice, start small and I'm sure you'll have it with practice. You can also find local small yarn shops near your home that you can go into and they would be able to help you. Good luck! There are videos out there teaching people who learned to crochet first, how to knit. Those might be helpful for you

    • @TheBlueMouseKnits
      @TheBlueMouseKnits  3 роки тому

      I am right handed, it doesn't really matter which hand you hold it in as long as you wrap the yarn around the needle the correct direction. I knit continentally, and hold the yarn in my left hand even though I am right handed. You might have better luck looking up a tutorial for english style (throwing) knitting since a lot of them hold it in their right hand. Hope that helps

    • @TheBlueMouseKnits
      @TheBlueMouseKnits  9 місяців тому

      Hi it depends on the yarn that you want to use. If you choose a yarn it will come with a recommended needle size written on the yarn label. I typically like to use medium (also called #4 or worsted) with a US 8 needle (5mm). That’s my go to combo. Hope that helps!

    Does the cast on stitch need to be loose I find once I've done the cast on and move onto the stockinette it's too tight

    • @TheBlueMouseKnits
      @TheBlueMouseKnits  3 роки тому

      Yep, you'll want to easily be able to slide the stitch around on the needle so that you can also fit another needle into it when knitting. If you cast on tightly it might make the first row impossible. Working the knit stitches near the tip of the needles helps if the CO stitches are a little tight, but you want to make sure the knit stitch you create is sized to fit on your needle, and is not too tight. Hope that helps

    I have a few questions,
    1. Is purl and garter the same?
    2. For the stockinette stitch, the front looks like the nice loom bracelets and the back looks like the purl stitch, but the front is done the same way I do the garter stitch?
    3. Is purl the same as garter but while garter uses front loop, purl uses the back loop?
    4. Wait, doing purl on the back loop is just for stockinette stitch?

    • @TheBlueMouseKnits
      @TheBlueMouseKnits  2 роки тому +2

      Sure thing!
      1.) Purl and garter are different. There are basically 2 types of stitches that make up all of knitting: Knit stitch and Purl stitch. For basic knitting stitch patterns you will use a combination of knits and purls. Garter is a stitch pattern where you only use knit stitches. For garter you knit every right side row, and also knit every wrong side row. If you were to purl every row it would look similar to garter, but the fabric would be tighter. Hope that clears things up.
      2.) The front (right side row) of stockinette is the same as garter. In order to make stockinette into garter you would also work knit stitches on the back (wrong side row).
      Stockinette =
      >Right side rows: Knit across
      >Wrong side rows: Purl across
      Garter =
      >Right side rows: Knit across
      >Wrong side rows: Knit across
      3.) Nope, hopefully my answer in 1.) clears this up, but garter and purl are not the same type of thing. A purl stitch is 1 of 2 stitches that are the foundation of knitting (the other being a knit stitch). And garter is stitch pattern which is a combination of knit stitches to create a fabric that looks a certain way. Stockinette is also a stitch pattern, so is garter. I think you are confusing right side rows and wrong side rows with front loops and back loops. Right side rows are just the side of the fabric that you want to show/display. And wrong side rows are the other side of your work that you don't want to display. Front loops and back loops make it more confusing, since there are more advanced stitches that use the loops in a different way. But, I think by front loop you mean the front side of your work (the right side)?
      4.) Doing purl stitches on the back side/wrong side of your work creates stockinette stitch yes. Knitting across the right side (front side), and purling across the wrong side (back side).
      Hope that clears some things up for you

      @@TheBlueMouseKnits this is such a great explanation! I picked up my needles after a 10 year hiatus and your videos refreshed my mind enough to get back in the rhythm. Thank you!

    I'm a complete beginner, and I've been trying to learn this point for weeks. I watched several videos and couldn't understand how to do it. And how simple it is! I finally got it thanks to your video. Thank you very much!❤

    What do you do when you Finnish a line so like what do you do at the end to make a new line on top?

    • @TheBlueMouseKnits
      @TheBlueMouseKnits  3 місяці тому

      You do what's called turning your work, which essentially is flipping your work so all the stitches are on your left hand needle and the yarn is attached to the stitch nearest the needle tip. Hope that helps

      The bumpy side is a wrong side/purl row. And the flatter side is a right side/knit row. Hope that helps!

    I've watched multiple tutorials, is it essentially just switching between a knit row and a purl row? Or is there some flipping that I'm still not understanding

    • @TheBlueMouseKnits
      @TheBlueMouseKnits  2 роки тому +1

      Yep, you've got it! You alternate knit rows and purl rows. If your first row is a knit row your second row will be a purl row. And from there every Odd # row will be a knit row (because your 1st row was odd numbered and a knit row), and every even # row will be a purl row (since your 2nd row was even and a purl row). Hope that clarifies it a little more :)

    I really appreciate the different continental methods you shared for the purl stitches. Thank you!
    As someone expanding from a life of crochet and a couple years of just knit stitches (it started with wanting bands for my crochet hats that stretched and kept shape better, became flat squares sewn closed for knit hats, and now I'm just in love and want to do it all), left handed yarn tension is more natural and I could immediately see how your thumb method would work for me. You did a great job explaining it!

    This doesn't help me I don't even know how to do the loops another beginner video teaches us but he goes way too fast for us to even understand

      I suggest starting with the beginner cast on: ua-cam.com/video/scqfO0Kji7A/v-deo.html
      and then moving on to the knit stitch tutorial which is the most basic stitch in order to knit:ua-cam.com/video/88pP-MlvnKE/v-deo.html
      This video you watched is for people who know how to cast on and work a knit stitch. So hopefully watching the more beginner stuff will help

    im gonna be honest: no matter how many tutorials i watch and how meticulously i follow the instructions it always just looks like the purl stitch :( idk what im doing wrong maybe my brain is fried or something but idk how to make it work 😢

    • @TheBlueMouseKnits
      @TheBlueMouseKnits  Рік тому

      Hm I wonder what’s causing it. Are you alternating rows? First row of all knits and second row of all purls? If it looks like all purl stitches it sounds like you’re knitting every row

      I think it either has to be the way you’re inserting the needle into the stitch on the left hand needle. Or the way you’re wrapping the yarn. One of those two are causing the twisted stitches

    • @fenrisnihilus3675

    • @TheBlueMouseKnits
      @TheBlueMouseKnits  3 роки тому

      Correct, it's just a different way. Not wrong, just different. Thats fairly common for english style knitting (often called throwing), and I knit continentally (most commonly held in the left hand)
