Was a phish fan and a TAB skeptic until I saw them live. The rhythm section is full blown ETHEREAL. Circular, multi-faceted, complex, flowing.
Not sure but I feel like a band like TAB has to rehearse their stuff more than a band like PhIsh does and that this comes through in the music. I feel like you could put the four Phish in a room and tell them to play something and 30 seconds later you are bobbing your head. Try that with TAB. Probably not so much.
Have to go against the grain somewhat with you on that. TAB doesn’t have 40 yrs together so it’s going to be a bit different, but the improv happens just as much. Love this band, in all its configurations, so much. All so unique, soulful, and badass in their own way! Keep on being TAB!

That's why I love Donna Jean godchaux with the Dead and Gloria Jones and Jackie lebranche with jgb. A mellifluous balance ying Yang male female hills and valleys light and dark. Have just begun to delve into tab, simply otherworldly not of this world fourth dimension lizard 🦎 people peyote LSD and magic mushrooms. And yet a whole lot of fun Hope to see him.. What I love about Trey is he cares most about what's coming out of those speakers. It's funny I go on my bluegrass, hip hop, rock and R&B binges but Trey's music is like my baseline. I keep coming back. I think he's a real genius but music is like food. At some point you get sick of what has been your staple and move on to something you haven't had in a while.

Trey did something with this band, something very cool, that you don't see much or at all.
Most large bands in the Big Time - Steely Dan, or Beyonce's band, or Tedeschi + Trucks, for example - will have a set of full-time backup singers and a set of full-time horn players. When the horns play, the back-up singers stand there looking stupid; and when the back-up singers sing, the horns stand there looking stupid. Maybe they dance. But they usually aren't both needed at the same time, so one set or the other stands there looking stupid. This is the only band I've seen where the horn section can sing harmony, and the same people can do both jobs.
With Tedeschi Trucks, during their shows, you regularly see band members rotating on & off the stage depending on where the band is going at any given moment.
