Drinker's Chasers - Is Disney Bad At Star Wars? Strangely Enough, Yes

- A recent article in the Hollywood Reporter dared to ask the question - has Disney screwed up with Star Wars? And we're here to answer, yes. Yes they have.
"Is Disney bad at Star Wars?"
Yes. Yes, they are.
They're also bad at everything else they make these days.
Hey, that's not fair. The $150 stuffed animals at the store in the Orlando airport are quite nice.
Yes, it's far from surprisingly!
Now, that's not entirely true. They are very good at making excuses for why they fail.
What they are good at would be the shorter answer. From "When you wish upon a Star" to "Woke is what makes you cringe".
They're good at making Star Wars just not good that they're teaming with their stakeholders like BlackRock, Vanguard for putting woke agenda injecting it in movie franchises
If Disney was only “bad” at Star Wars, that would be a huge improvement.
😊
True.
Better 2B thought of as just idiots as oppose to woke morons.
As in the 80's meaning of 'bad'... like 'who's bad?"
Bad is the sand dialogue in Attack of the Clones. Those romance scenes are still so dull and sleep-inducing, even taking into consideration how abysmal the Disney movies got. What happened to Luke / Jake was a nightmare no fan should've gone through.
So bad in fact, that their kickoff post-purchase was a nearly scene for scene remake of the 1977 classic as far as the plot goes. That was barely watchable and it only got worse from there.
Disney has taken a beloved franchise and murdered it
Disney acquired LucasFilm 12 years ago. 12 YEARS of pain and suffering.
Disney is the Dark Side.
Im having brain aneurysm seeing how Disney managed to turn Lucasfilm, the most profitable IP ever known into basically CW.

If we go by Star Wars, we have 11 more years to wait until the Empire is crushed...
F**k Georges for selling and f*** him for Kathleen Kennedy.
The reaction to the Rey movie confirms that Star Wars fans have reached peak apathy.
It started with Book Of Boba Fett, IMO
They should have stopped after Mandalorian Season 2, honestly
If anyone had told me way back in the day that anything Star Wars could be received with apathy, I would have thought they were nuts. But here we are.
@@hadtopicausernameIn 1999 that would have been unthinkable.(With all the hype building around the prequel trilogy.)
@@JasonJJS I'm thinking back to when Episode IV was shown for the first time on TV here. I think I was five, and my parents let me stay up late that night to watch it. Star Wars was just the coolest thing ever, and for me it stayed that way for a very long time. But now, all this new stuff just makes me go meh.
With Acolyte show cancelled, Darth Plagueis is stuck standing behind the cave's walls for eternity.
Probably for the best. He doesn't deserve to be subjected to whatever these showrunners had planned for him.

@@DrYu-jf6tb Good for him.
He couldn't save this show... from dying
I don't think the fan base will ever forgive JJ and Kathleen for never having had Luke, Han and Leia (and, of course, Chewie) on screen one last time. With the passing of both Carrie Fisher and Peter Mayhew, it's now impossible as well. I'm pretty sure that's all most people wanted. And then they just decided to add insult to injury throughout their tenure as stewards of Star Wars. I mean the end of the third movie, Rey - the last Palpatine- has successfully managed to not only extinguish the Skywalker line but also steal their name and profession. Thanks again, JJ.
I love that the Hollywood Reporter said no, Disney isn't bad at Star Wars. Talk about being completely clueless about your own industry...
Or well paid by it to only put propaganda, not journalism. I doubt that someone "intelligent" enough to put out an somewhat readable article can't see what happened with Disney Star Wars
That's because the Hollywood Reporter is bad at reporting.
Maybe they also bad at journalism
What good is their propaganda when no one cares about what the Hollywood Reporter has to say, and everyone already knows that Disney doesn't know WTF they're doing these days? A blind squirrel could tell you that Disney star wars is absolute dogshit
Star Wars should have been a slam dunk. It is laughable how Disney has only dropped the ball consistently.
IKR😞😞
It’s like it had to be on purpose to be this bad. Many think it was...
They did slam dunk it but it was a lego death star and when it hit the concrete......
They did it on purpose because the one thing that triggers women is if men are happy
And thew few successes they had was when there were people who were least influenced by Disney
I remember that scene from Robocop 2, where the board was discussing how they could "improve" Robo and ended up overwhelming him with garbage directives. They, who had no investment in the Robocop program and knew nothing about it, responded emotionally on their slightest whims. Pulled in too many different directions and contradictory commands, he became useless trying to please everyone at once. Eventually Robo saved himself by frying his own circuits and clearing it all out, resetting his brain back to regular cop.
This is the problem with a top-down hierarchy.
The idiots in charge, in their safe place, insulated from the impact of their decisions, pat themselves on the back for a job well done.
I never thought of that, Grogu IS bigger than Rey. I've literally never seen a Rey action figure, and I work next to a toy store.
I've seen Baby Yodas everywhere and I've never even seen the movie.
You can only find Rey figures at Ollies.
To be fair he’s a purposely cutesy character, I’ve seen tonnes of little baby groot toys compared to Star-Lord and Gamora lol but you’re right overall.
I actually have a Rey figure,after TFA l had high hopes,that ended quickly w TLJ 😬
Kylo and whatever the Chrometrooper’s name was were really the only two characters that had a strong enough visual presence to sell toys lol.

Disney and Kennedy have generally been attempting to apply ideas or templates from outside Star Wars to it rather than seeking stories within it. Also when initial idea or writers are trash, its a story doomed.
Star Wars is beyond hope after what Disney, Kennedy and Filoni have done to it.
No Luke, no Vader, no Yoda, no Solo, no C-3PO, no R2-D2, no Chewbacca, no Leia, no Maul. No storm troopers, tuscan raiders, jawas. No A wings, B wings X wings Y wings, no speeders, AT-ATs, AT-STs, no Death Star, no Star Destroyers.
It might have the title of Star Wars, but to me it's unrecognisable.
All I need is a Galactic Empire, stormtroopers, and a feisty resistance of some sort.
I'd've preferred if they never went back to Tatooine, for example. If they never gave us any memberberry plots.
You just described KOTOR 2. Which is my favourite Star Wars media.
Disney uses all if those as much as possible. But with bad writing even that doesn't work anymore.
@@Сайтамен 💯💯. Exactly
Andor has none of that. It doesn't even have lightsabers (if I recall correctly) and it was great. It's horrific writing that's ruined Star Wars, not missing any of those things.
Are they bad? No. They are god awful. Imagine having multiple S tier level properties and not only pissing the bed, but completely losing track of where you came from in the first place. Good grief.
💯 Exactly
Disney acquiring Star Wars was the worst thing to happen to the IP. There have been a few decent shows, but that's it. 🎉
A few decent shows?? You’re part of the problem
@@clayleonard7005 I'm talking about Andor. 🎉
I'd argue Andor was the ONLY decent thing we got out of this deal.
Andor and some episodes of TCW season 7 and Mando season 1 were good, but that's about it
@@dontshootmex5588and clone wars season 7 doesn’t deserve disney credit because most of these episodes were written long ago before the show was initially cancelled .

Disney is the Boeing of entertainment.
Boeing makes the F-15EX Eagle II. What has Disney actually made that is anywhere near the best fighter in existence?

@@Gooch7714present day Boeing is just the incompetence of their last big acquisition though... Arguing it's a "Boeing" problem is like arguing modern Disney sucks because "Fox" or "Lucasfilm".
@@quyiterjust like Boeing, Disney went from creative driven into investor driver and you can see how the quality suffer
They would have to de canonise the sequels and get rid of woke garbage to make Star Wars worth watching now. Things that they aren’t willing to do.
How can they do that now? Unless they recast the roles of Luke, Han and Leia. Especially Leia.
i think the real issue is that disney is bad at boys.
Oh this. This right here.
They bought boy brands and attempted to morph them into “girl” brands or “everyone” brands. They failed fantastically.
And girls. Every Star Wars female is written like an entitled, infallible and contradictory whiny baby.
That is really hitting the nail on the head. There is a cultural shift starting apparently 8 years ago where traditional hero story arcs for males are are downplayed. Star Wars Rebels is now 10 years old and is exactly that type of traditional story where a young male protagonist learns to become the hero, like a Shonen, or like A New Hope. In 2024 they took the same character and put him in live action where he has been doing nothing for years but waiting to be rescued by the female protagonists who then barely give him the time of day and send him on his way so they can do more important things without him.
That's always been the case, except during that short period in the late 70s/early 80s when Disney got super dark with Black Hole, Tron, Something Wicked..., Dragonslayer, etc.
The funny thing is the vast majority of their animated films have always been targeted towards girls but they've still been enjoyed by everyone. Even in the 90s girl boss era with Pocahontas, Mulan, and Belle. They didn't need to keep pushing beyond that.
Genuinely, the only way for anyone to care about Star Wars again is:
1. For Disney to not own it.
2. For the new owners to say "Everything made after 2014 is now non-canon."
3. Follow it up with a good movie. We can't have movies based on the New Republic Era, that ship has sailed, but there's plenty of other good material that can be adapted. I'd start with The Old Republic era.
As it stands, I think I'll probably be dead before any of that comes even close to happening.
KK destroyed Star Wars. She really must have hated George Lucas.
💯💯💯💯Indeed. It feels visceral.
Along with the people who disliked the prequels back in 1999 to 2005.
The larger blame goes to Georges for her being in thst position.
@@vlada Maybe so but still....
If anything she has made him look an absolute genius, even the prequels have been redeemed
My wife's cousin and her husband went to that Star Wars hotel. He's a hedge fund manager. He said he could tell it would never make money. He said it was a great experience, but with all the staff and everything Disney needed to pull it off obviously cost an insane amount of money.
Disney’s like an alchemist who was given a philosophers stone AND the recipe to make more. Then they broke the stone into smaller and smaller chucks, somehow expecting each fragment to be as good as the whole, and scribbled “PROBLEMATIC” all over the recipe.
Well... it WAS written by a white guy.
Sorry to be that guy, but in Fullmetal Alchemist the recipe genuinely was problematic. Not just twitter level, actually a problem. I know you were just using a metaphor but my autistic ass couldn’t let it stand. Sorry.
@@taudvore259 If I remember rightly it was large quantities of human souls, no? That is in and of itself problematic I agree.
@@taudvore259 Was talking the practice in reality. Mostly because the Brotherhood method is what they're doing right now. With Kathleen Kennedy playing the role of Shou Tucker.
I knew Star Wars was fucked when we got a sequel film with Mark, Carrie, and Harrison back and they never reunite in the same scene. Then Carrie fishier sadly passed away and I knew we truly were in the worst timeline for Star Wars.
Star Wars is Episodes I - VI
'nuff said.
There's some other good things. Knights of the Old Republic is good too. But yeah, those are the only movies in canon in my mind.
I did my share of complaining about the prequels, but I still loved everything Lucas made. Disney Wars has no heart.
Add in Andor and Rogue One and you've got a pretty good (great at some points) 8-part story there.
@@danielmacdonald9287 true
Yeah they dragged Ridley out to promote the Rey movie, so it's understandable to think they will proceed with it, but..........they had Patty Jenkins do a whole trailer presentation with full CGI effects promoting her Rogue Squadron movie....and that prob ain't happening.
Sad cuz I would've preferred rogue squadron over any recent sw show just for how enthusiastic she was about how she's loved fighter jets since she was a little girl and making her dad proud
@@bluemutt9964dear God no, please no.
I adore those books, do NOT let D+ adapt them.
Patty can give all the lip service she wants, I do not believe her.
She wants to impress her father, she doesn't care about Rogue Squadron.
Chris Gore is right, when I hear that Daisy Ridley will be in any project, I just couldn't care less. Zero excitement, zero draw.
At this stage we should just be grateful we've got the good Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies. Disney have shagged the life out of the franchises and the original stars like Hamill and Ford trashed their legacy. There's no going back.
They've milked all the green juice out of it.
Disney had no plan for continuing the narrative and thematic continuity of Star Wars and almost no plan for expanding on it.
They had a power planet for feeding content production. Star Wars had an audience recognition multiple. Those were the ONLY two elements they considered, and they assumed that the broke man's with bankruptcy non-dischargable debt and syphilis Speilberg could execute on a non-vision, since he's never directed a movie with a discernible vision before.
Disney's entire Star Wars legacy is baby Yoda, Andor and half credit for Rogue One....after a decade and hundreds of millions of dollars in underperforming projects.
Hundreds of millions? Try BILLIONS in underperforming projects.
@@johannderjager4146 ....bit vaguely worded, but I meant that the projects' total underperformance was in the hundreds of millions. You think there have been multiple billions? Don't think they've been missing out on $200-300M per year, especially considering the fact that their early efforts did decently well financially because they were being given the benefit of the doubt by fans.
0:40 you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink
Ok imma stop you at 14:50 - The Bad Batch is amazing and not corny and awful. It actually feels like Star Wars. People just don’t give it a chance because it’s animated!!!
Yea I liked The Bad Batch. Omega could get annoying, but overall I liked the characters. They had better character arcs than most live action characters. Not counting like..Andor. Crosshair was pretty brutal there for a while, and I liked Tech. I really wanted him not to be dead in season 3 but the finale he goes out in was pretty crazy.
Asking if Disney is bad at Star Wars is like asking if water is wet lmao

Their animated shows are mostly superb. Clone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch, love them all.
Everyone to the Prequel Trilogy: "Perhaps we treated you too harshly."
Revenge Of The Sith is still the best Star Wars movie and the best of the Prequels, IMO.
The prequels: “Now you see Me, brother.”
"Just because I took a shit today, it doesn't make the shit I took yesterday any less of a shit."
Revenge of the sith is the best star wars movie e1 and e2 had very good ideas but definetly executed poorly
I genuinely like the Prequels, yes even Phantom Menace. Phantom Menace has heart, you know? It has too much Anakin and way too much Jar-jar, but it has moments that genuinely are stirring and exciting and evoke this world.
Palpatine won in the end because he took over his granddaughter Rey's body after she struck him down and he committed identity theft of the Skywalker name when Kylo Ren, the last of the bloodline passed away.
This is an outstandingly eloquent and cogent essay and I very much appreciate your referencing Tolkien's thoughts on the matter. Bravo Sir.
Its crazy how bad self awareness is in hollywood and journalism
Not sure what the bigger mistake was; making Star Wars an IP for girls, or making it woke
what is the difference?
changing a boy brand to a girl brand is woke
(i say this as a female)
Both and I'm a woman saying this.
Star Wars was for everyone. After Disney got hold of it its only for the alphabet gang. They cut their potential audience by 97%.
Imo, this doesn't corelate at all. Most women love the old franchises as well, they enjoy male characters, masculinity, ect - it's just this annoying and small, but loud minority, who are pushing for the "no men, no white, no straight characters anymore, girlbosses, turning males into idiots."
I like a male Anakin, a masculine and cool hero, a supportive and non-toxic female character, and please, no girl bosses.
Same thing, guy. If you can’t imagine a cowboy or a NASCAR fan being enthusiastic about woke, you have your answer.
I am so sad that they say "Is Disney Bad At Star Wars?" because Walt is not there and the people running the company do not care at all about the brand. If it wasn't for Blackrock et al, the shareholders would have kicked out Iger forever ago.

Did Chris Gore just say that actors can't get by on just their movie roles? Are they having trouble buying food with their millions of dollars?
He did get appropriately mocked for it.
It wasn't a compliment. Most actors live above their means.

Disney has released like 20+ things since they bought starwars. Only like 3 things they made are good. So yes, they're bad, incredibly bad.
more meh than "good", the bar is so-lo
The only thing that you need to know about Disney and Star Wars is that Disney has STILL not made a profit from buying up Lucasfilm. That never gets mentioned and that is utter and total proof that they are bad at making Star Wars. Despite the billions spent buying it, and then the films that did make money, they have still managed to spend more than they have taken in, by going over budget and so bad at writing that the stories and films have taken less and less as they progressed. They will never make a profit from it now, especially after Acolyte and if they make a stupidly expensive Rey film. And I am betting that still gets made at some point as they will never want to deal with the fallout of not actually doing it....
@@itsaKindaMagik I don't think that's entirely fair, but I get why people are so burned on this stuff. Andor was pretty great imo, a true diamond in the great expanse of rough. But we know KK thought that was going to be of no interest to anyone, so Tony Gilroy was left on his own to work on it for the most part.
And Mando S1-2 were some solid Star Wars too...but that was around the time KK realised it was popular and decided she had to get involved and put an end to that nonsense.

Its cheaper for Disney to just pay Daisy Ridley for dragging her out and making her think she was going to make $12M than them make this movie. just quietly pay her and quietly dont do this movie and remove KK from these projects already.
Daisy seems like a really nice/sweet and cool person.
It’s a shame
I agree with you. She seemed very gracious when talking about the fans. I hope she finds a niche where she can succeed.
I don't blame her, or any other actors for their acting. It takes a good director to inspire the best performance from their actors. Unless you hear that an actor was difficult to work with and did the role their own way the responsibility should fall on the director. Because at the end of the shoot they're the ones who watch a wooden performance being filmed and say "good enough. That's a wrap."
Hopefully Daisey does get a role that draws out the best in her.
I'll still watch other things with the actors. Most of them are pretty good, stuck with shitty Disney scripts.
I mean...
Last week she literally said it's just men who hated her and never gave Rey a chance.
Seems really sweet and nice lmao.

Daisy Ridley needs to make more small indie films like "Sometimes I Think About Dying" I think much like how Robert Pattinson did when he was best know for Twilight he was in tons of great small rolls and became a great actor organically imo

Between Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaacs, and even Adam Driver, how many other roles (without reading off of IMDb) can you name beyond the Sequel Trilogy?
For Daisy, all I got was _Murder on the Orient Express_ which wasn’t that large a role.
Boyega had the _Pacific Rim_ sequel.
Meanwhile, Oscar Isaac was doing _Ex Machina, Sucky Punch, X-Men: Apocalypse_ (won’t hold that against him), and even _Moonknight_ which was a series.
Finally Adam Driver is currently in _Megaopolis,_ was in _65_ and had an Oscarworthy lead performance in _Marriage Story_ as well as was in _House of Gucci._
Kinda tells you how well the ST has done for these people, most of which I hadn’t heard of before then.
I genuinely believe Star Wars will be a respectable franchise again...I just hope that happens within my lifetime.
How long to you expect to live?😇

Okay I need to get something off my chest because it’s annoying me now because this who line that Rey is the bestest ever because she’s Palpatine’s grand kid or whatever is complete nonsense.
People…Palpatine was an absolute manipulator so you can bet your bottom dollar that he fathered loads of kids up and down the galaxy.
Give the man some credit. You don’t think someone like him who was flying through the ranks wasn’t getting his freak on?
There are hundreds of kids out there waiting for him to come back from the shops.
