You should have got one with 1 trunk instead of multiple trunks. Lees work that way. Try to find a fertilizer with low nitrogen because your tree is already fully mature. That way, less growth and less shoots from the ground.

Could you have started a new tree (propergated) with the lower branches that you removed.
