@telemarker77 all-in-one is not a commercial variety, so no, it is not leftovers. You paid that much for that size because that's the size your nursery of choice ordered, and that's the price they set. Independence is a newly released commercial variety, may or may not be released for home owners.

Walnut trees can't be pruned to control size, best to keep them at least 16 feet from each other.

We don't recommend Walnut as a landscape tree. They have an alkaline oil secretion that does not allow other plants to do well in their general area. Also consider that you can go to Trader Joes seven days a week and buy fresh, good quality walnuts for $7 per pound. You don't have to harvest, hull, shell or store them. Use your valuable backyard space to grow something that you can't find in the store like good Citrus, Peach, Plum, Apricot or nectarine.

what would happen to my production if I didn't water/irrigate my trees at all? I live in a temperate climate Black Sea area with moderate temperatures and an annual rainfall of 470mm. I understand the required water is 600mm. would I lose some production and if so, how much in % terms?

should have explained. I am in the preparation phase. as I'm looking to create an orchard in my area but I have to choose between expensive land with water access/wells and cheaper land with no water supply. so it's a balance I'm trying to navigate.
the soil is heavy sandy clay.

Can walnuts grow in the UK? In winter the temp falls to around -5 degrees Celsius. We sometimes get snow. In the summer the max temp rises to around 27 degrees Celsius, maybe 30. Do you have nurseries in the UK or can you ship plants over?

From what I understand, English walnuts can grow from hardiness zone 5-9. So it depends, but I think Sask only has hardiness zone 2 to 4 (so you probably can't). However, things could change with global warming! You can get black walnut rootstocks (zone 3-5) and be ready once your hardiness zone change!

Will English grafted local Black Walnuts in southern Alabama produce walnuts? I have never seen one around here but I know you can purchase them locally (don't know where it actually comes from).

    • @DaveWilsonTrees

Taylor T English walnut nut kernels can definitely be purchased in Alabama. But, growing them there might be another story. Too wet and humid. Bacterial diseases would probably overcome them in time.

Hi Dave, thank you for the video! I live in Los Angeles and wondering if I could grow a walnut tree here? And, if so, which type? I am relandscaping my back and front yards so have opportunity to plant directly in ground or in a raised bed section of the yard. I also have areas in the front that get sun all day. And the back is half day sun. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just offering my opinion, I would not grow black walnut trees. I have a couple in my backyard and detest them. They are messy. We have squirrels/chipmunks that have eaten holes right into our garage to store their walnuts for winter. The rodents shell them and leave that messy green carcass with the dark black innards, which can stain your shoes and clothes. They also give off some kind of chemical (juglone?) which other plants don’t like. Then, you’ll be stuck with more walnuts than you know what to do with. You’ll have to harvest them (aka pick them up off the ground) and figure out what to do with the husks, etc. Oh, and they grow really fast! Before you know it, you’ll have a 30’ tree.
