Yes, physics states that it'll create a air lock in the lower unit. if it's leaking you need to wait 10-15 minutes for the air bubbles in the oil to burp out.. then add more pumps.

Dave....always make sure you can remove the top screw first. If you drain it and can't fill it back properly then you're in trouble. Fill from the bottom until it comes out of the top hole and with the bottle still in the bottom hole screw the top screw in. Then remove the bottle tip and screw in the bottom screw. Remove the top screw again and top off. Filling from the bottom prevents air bubbles.

Changing your lower unit oil is one of the easiest jobs you can do on a boat. It should take 10mins per engine. I would not torque the bolts that huge. The manual calls for 6.6 ft lbs of torque which is hand tighten and not even that hard. Always wipe the magnet on the bottom screw clean, if your bolt doesnt have a magnet, go buy one, you should have it. I keep 2 qts of gear lube with me and change it right there at the boat ramp after i get back so its all nice and hot. Dont go past 100 hours changing your oil is great to see how your seals are holding up. If its milky you know you need to change one of the 3 seals. Buy a 25 pack of the crush washers, they are fiber so make sure to get the right ones not generic ones. Lastly, all the pros and shops all use quicksilver sae90 lower unit oil. The oil is greenish blue in color. I have yamaha engines and still use quicksilver, its not great for just Mercs it works for most all outboards and stern drives.
