I'm a music teacher, and the one thing I always tell my students is that being a musician is being an artist. Each artist will add something different to their work - sometimes it's well received, other times it isn't. Still, it's part of being an artist, and it's imperative, because when everything becomes the same, nothing is art anymore. Disturbed took a well-loved worldwide classic and made it their own while not disrespecting the original. It's not easy to do that, but they are artists. Fantastic cover.

It's a fantastic version. For years I didn't want to check it out as I thought a metal band covering The Sound Of Silence could only go very wrong. It was never intended to be played as metal and so I didn't give a chance until I finally saw it on a different reaction channel, and I was blown away. I am not a Disturbed fan but this version is incredible.

Seeing a father and son facial expressions during this superb Simon & Garfunkel cover version of The Sound Of Silence by Disturbed is priceless, like many others who appreciate a good band and the gall to make this well known track their personal yet tasteful spin of a classic is confound and blissful. Magic !!

THE WARNING The first stanza Simon refers to darkness as being his "old friend" that he came to talk with because he was awoken in the middle of the night, of a nightmare that still lingers in his head, that gives his a considerable amount of distress. So bad that the awful visions were still flashing before his eyes as he is awake.
Second stanza begins setting the scene in which the dream took place: at night, him walking along the cobblestone road where he stops below the light of a streetlight. The cold chill runs up his back, so he lifts his collar to the "cold and damp." Just then, a blight neon sign lit up, showing that he, in fact, was not alone. But there were "ten thousand maybe more" all gathered in the cold night. The people who are talking, not speaking, are politicians, who are using false words to sway the population to vote for them, never revealing true intentions. The people therefore are hearing are not listening.
They are taking these words that are spoken to them in plain value, not examining or putting into depth anything that is said. Because of this, as referred to later, these politicians have formed a government that the people in fact voted for and supported until it began to act as a dictatorship. This seems that Simon is making an inditement to a large government that has taken away the freedoms of its people. A future for America it seemed with the rise of government in world affairs as in entered Vietnam. This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made."
The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse. Simon, or whoever has had this dream, tries to bring people to speak out. Saying "Fools, you do not know, Silence like a cancer grows" that as more are afraid to speak, the more control the government takes and the less anyone will stand up to the new government.
As all hope is about to be given up, someone steps up and says to the crowd that the future they will hold has been written on the walls of subways and tenement halls. This is because this form of protest can be done anonymously, therefore no one can get in trouble for it. This begins the whispering in the silence of the people, and starts the beginning of a revolt.

Hit the nail on the head guys!
The beauty of this is all in the arrangement (linked with David's vocals which span an incredible range in the track).
The whole buildup of the song is so respectfully in tune with the lyrics and original intent but they have switched up the delivery to make it unique and captivating which is far from easy to do... especially when you choose lne of the most recognised and beloved songs of all time 😎
Their live performance Trey mentioned is worth a check too!

I'm usually pretty much against most covers as well, although I agree if the new version can either do the original justice or rework it in such a way as to make it something different without taking away from the original. That said I know three versions of this song that I really love. The original version which I would say way a warning on the direction the world might go, this version which I think is anger that we actually let it happen (or caused it), and the version by Pentatonix which I find more sadness that it has come to this (with maybe a little bit of hope that we can learn from it).

My uncle who was around when the original Simon and Garfunkel version was released said that he would even go as far to say that this version by Disturbed is probably better than the original.
David Draiman who is the lead singer said that they usually take about an hour when recording a song but on this occasion took 3 hours and when he went into the sound booth the guy who was overseeing things thought that he'd messed things up because David came in and was completely silent.
David went over to the recording and turned to look out of the window as he rewound the tape and played it back to himself and he did this again 3 more times, all the time looking away and remaining totally silent.
By this time the poor guy thought that David Draiman must be absolutely livid with him because he's not saying anything or even showing his face.
When he eventually did turn to speak to him he had to wipe away the tears and compose himself and all he said was that he had done a fantastic job and the song was beautiful.
Here, DD had been so overcome with emotion that he couldn't really speak.

Many times if you go into so much detail it puts people off and can be unnecessary.
But I truely felt that in this case it really needed to be shown just to get exactly the guys point of view and of course it was the very first time Disturbed had released a song that purposely had this style - so different for them.

Simon & Garfunkel wrote the original as a warning, that people refusing to come together and listen to each other would be our downfall. Disturbed wrote this as a display of anger (in the most beautiful way) because we haven’t listened. Look where we are today as a society. Paul Simon has said that this is his favorite cover of the song.

You know, I really didn't like this version, in the same way that I don't like Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You: it takes the subtlety and underplayed sadness from the original and instead smashes you over the head with just how "emotive" they are. I stand by my thoughts on Whitney, but this actually really did grow on me. The sheer ferocity of his voice actually does give real emotional heft to the song. Whitney sounds like she's showing off, this dude sounds like he really, really means it. I still prefer the quiet sadness of the original, but this one gets better the more I hear it,
