Simon and Garfunkel did this song as a warning as to how people were going to get wrapped up in technology. Disturbeds version is anger and rage that the warning wasn't heeded. Verse " My eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light", signs of all kinds compared to signs back when the original was wrote. Verse "People talking without speaking", Texting, no one speaks anymore". Verse "People hearing without listening", People are too busy texting, gaming etc., they hear you but not listening to what's actually being said. Verse, the rage, "And the people bowed and prayed to the neon God they made". Cell phones. People sitting around with their faces buried in them texting and whatever else. Looks like they're "Praying". Sound of silence is about technology taking control over society.
When this song came out Paul Simon said that it now belongs to Disturbed. I heard someone once say that Simon and Garfunkel's version was kind of like a gentle warning of things to come and Disturbed's was rage that the warning wasn't heeded. That struck me as something that fits very well
@@joejacobsen6822 , I was just about to say the same thing until I saw your comment. You’re correct. Trent was the only artist to ever say that about the cover of another. Thank you for setting the record straight. Some people like to fabricate stories onto others.
I think that we never listened to the words of this song, because of the harmony of Simone and Garfunkel. It's a beautiful song for both of the ways it has been presented. Maybe this shod be a theme song for politicians to hear
Yes, this was a cover....of Simon and Garfunkel's song.....sung by David Draiman...a voice to die for. A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to vocal fry/distortion and back on a dime. He has a certain timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful! An awesome talent. Loved your reaction FTB
the verse-- (( Neon light , that split the night.)) reference when black&white TV came out around the 1940s , living room around the world was half lighted and half dark.. the verse-- ((people talking with out speaking )) i feel it TODAY, Texting NOT talking..
Simon and Garfunkel song, 60s.....during the Civil Rights, Tentament hall where students were shot protesting Vietnam...it was like our Anthem back then. Simon and Garfunkel probably best song writers of my generation...song still holds up. Been covered many many times. I love this cover...
As a teen of the 80s I loved the original Simon and Garfunkel version. Then my son told me to to listen to this version by Disturbed. I never told him of my love of Simon and Garfunkel and don’t recall playing their music around him. My son is into that heavy death metal that I just don’t get. He knows that but somehow knew I would like this version. I immediately copied to my phone to listen to whenever I wanted. Great Music brings us all together
I happened to be watching Conan on the night this was debuted and I was just stunned into actual silence. I've been a fan of the song since I was introduced to it in the early 70s by my hippie 2nd grade music teacher. 🙂 Disturbed took it to a whole new level.
Great cover reaction. To me Simon and Garfunkel the original writers and performers were telling us back in the 60’s when I first heard the song to get our shit together or the future won’t be pretty and David’s version is saying oh well the shit has now hit the fan!!!!! Just saying. So says Austin Tx!!!! 😍😍😍🍸😎
Paul Simon started writing the word's to this masterpiece shortly after the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963 and finished in 64' for those of us who witnessed that decade this song means something different to us all. But this cover to me is how this song should sound! Thanks brother and peace to you and yours ✌️
I find the lyrics are very fitting for the current times, which really speaks to the brilliance of Simon and Garfunkel. Something written 60 years ago being just as relevant today as it was when it first came out. To me, "Talking without speaking" and "Hearing without listening" are relating directly to us. Everyone wants to be heard, but so few are actually saying something real; only the most basic and superficial things. Everyone hears what is being said (or at least claiming to), but few are really listening with the goal of truly understanding. The "Neon God they made" speaks to us so directly that it's genuinely terrifying. The internet. Smart phones. Social media. We are addicted, simple as that. There's apps that show all the constellations, but most people in the cities have hardly ever seen a star. You can take a VR tour of the Louvre, but haven't seen the individual brush strokes that build a painting. We talk to people on the other side of the world, but never talk to the person sitting next to us. This song was written with the world at the brink of nuclear war, and here we are again.
Thank you for your comments, I loved your reaction to this cover, so much symbolism in this cover, I am a child of the 60's when Simon & Garfunkel released the original in 1964 I was in high school, back then I considered it kind of country-ish, I liked it but the message didn't pierce the soul (okay so I'm 74). This cover by Disturbed along with the video is the BEST it touches your soul and really gets S&G message to the core of my being and many others too, goosebumps and tears every time. "Neon God" in the 60's TV the advancement of technology NOW there is so many more especially cell phones. "Neon light that split the night", I remember when neon light would turn on there would be a crackling sound thus touched the sound of silence. Suggestion = The official video by Disturbed “Hold On To Memories” was released Jan 23rd 2020. “Hold on to Memories" is about not only honoring those we’ve lost, but also making the most of our time with those we still have.
David was a cantor in the temple. I belonged to one of the Pentecostal religeon. Where preaching singing was done sometimes and prophecy was also done this way. David preached sang this song. You started to say the words as if to find the meaning. That’s what you were supposed to do. When Simon - author and Garfunkel put this out about 1964 it was 2 weeks after the assassination of JFK. But the song angered people because the thought they preaching to them and they were. Go back and interpret what the sound of silence was. It’s almost tricky because silence was no noise. Yet Simon say silence like a cancer grows. If you don’t speak up for wrongs committed the wrongs grow. The ugliness grows. But this is part of my meaning. My eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon that touched the sound of silence. This is dark. Simon was on the flow in a bathroom in the dark when the words came to him. This word silence haunts me. We’ve got computers and our devices that have practically taken over the world. Simon saw it in 64 in the dark. It’s a prophecy already fulfilled 58 years later that David Draimen translated by his preachy voice. Simon knows David hit the nail on the head. Their are many versions of this song, but it has to be preached like David to wake us up for the things wrong now. We can’t just got silent cause like a cancer it grows. We’re all responsible. A boy about 6 years old ask me for money for his family that was stuck without gas over where I couldn’t see. Nobody was watching me, nobody saw what I did. But, I had a few dollars in my pocket. I thought he had crossed the border. I gave him a few dollars hoping someone else would help too. My job was not to check to see if he was lying. My God allowed me to have a few dollars in my wallet so I gave it to him. This song is your interpretation.
I have listened to this countless times and it still gives me chills. You should check out the original with Simon and Garfunkel. I actually prefer the live version from the Conan O’Brien show 😊
Now that's how you do it my brother. You respect of your and only talk when necessary and give your viewpoint. That was an awesome reaction. So many people just want to hear themselves talk, and it totally takes away from the video and the reaction. Until next time stay well
Alone time...yet built on thought past moments or choice. Being stranded, incarcerated without participating, or choice of solitary time with purpose to meditate or reflect upon self and world/or others. No interruption. Meditation......the goal is the silence. Only comes after
Would love for you to do a reaction to Henk Poort's version of this song. He did it on a Dutch TV Show called 'Beste Zangers' meaning 'best singers'. He's an opera singer from origin but did this song on live TV and it was AMAZING !!!
A very Powerful message from God is sent in this song....The words of the Prophets are Written....( The Bible ) Now its up to us to read them....& Break the Sound Of Silence...Let your Soul be your Guide...
This song was Sung and written By Paul Simon in the 60s, It Was Kind of a Warning. Disturbed Made it kind of Relevant Today, Because The Sound of Silence, Is People using Cell Phones and Not Verbally talking anymore. Not Listening to what each other is saying. it's SAD😪
This was an original song by Simon and Garfunkel. I assume back then it had a different meaning. Now I assume it could refer to social media. People talk without speaking (UA-cam, instagram, Facebook, twitter etc). They talk from behind a screen instead of face to face. And sometimes I think that can lead to creating a distance between people
Back in the day, they had TV, Billboards, neon signs, and people on the subway hiding behind their morning newspapers, same way they are now hiding behind their phones. The behaviour is the same, only the form of media overwhelming our senses has changed.

David has the most beautiful voice and the passion he gives to this song is amazing.

He performed this live on Conan and even though David was sick, he did a phenomenal job.
I've heard he was so nervous while waiting to go on that he got stoned, then said he was sick to explain the symptoms.
I prefer this version. It's so much more impactful.
