DDV seems better as a point of attack defender, help defense isn't his strong suit. GP2 on the other hand is a guy I'm happy to get back because he knows when to help and he's good in isolation.

@@nickjones5495 your right I agree I didn’t put that because that’s the obvious that everyone notices, I have noticed that the last 3 games including tonight’s game that I was at that we have just been a way better defensive team in terms of communication and switching and not allowing big men to trap guards in the post and Getting easy shots, we still let it happen a few times tonight but over all we were great, they made a few really tough shots in the third which was the only reason they crack more than 100 points

My crazy conspiracy theory is that this is Warriors analytics. Team Defense is mostly effort and energy. In a way to provide some sort of "load management" through out the long regular season, the players are unofficially allowed to take it easy on defense for road games. Analytics probably showed that they'd still have a great chance at making the playoffs, catching up any needed additional wins by around March.

One under talked about thing is how little games the Warriors played on the road with their three veterans all on the court. Their road record with Draymond, Steph and Klay all playing is probably closer to 7 - 10. Still not a good record but not historically bad. Klay didn't play any back to back games before around the all star break and Steph has only played around fifty games this year. All three rest on back to back often, which never happens at home.

@@youtubewatcher8565 I think the warriors coaching staff should be smart enough to make these decisions on their own or they aren't really worthy of coaching the team. This ain't rocket science, it's statistics.
Having these 'gimped' and not normal lineups in away games might be a huge factor indeed.
Great analysis. Definitely brought some useful insight into their problems. I find they also have issues with point of attack defense. They just get beat one on one too easily. With Donte it’s because he’s pressuring elite ball handlers too closely. With everyone else, it seems like they cheat a step in help and can’t recover when it’s swung to their man. That starts a cascade of help, ball swinging, and ultimately a good shot for their opponents. When the Dubs are really locked in, they help but know exactly how far they are from their assignments, so they never leave enough space that they can’t recover and contest the 3 while also containing against the drive. Not sure why they can’t muster that same focus as they do at home, but I think the tiny bit of extra space they leave gets used well by their opponents outside of Chase Center, but feels more like a bad shot at Chase so they shoot it and make it less. My two cents.

Here's my thoughts on the "why":
There Warriors tend to play pretty small. Other than Looney, they don't have any traditional bigs.
The obvious game plan against a smaller team is to take it inside and go for offensive rebounds.
Once they get dunked on a few times, they start overhelping to prevent easy buckets.
Additionally, the lack of a big shot blocker means that if the other team can beat the first defender, they have a relatively easy shot at the goal. A big center standing in the lane can be a strong deterrent, and does not have to over help because they are big and athletic. However, the smaller players that the Warriors field do not have that advantage, and need to do more. So they overplay the help.
That’s really interesting. I need to check if they’re giving up more offensive rebounds

You should do a thorough analysis of when players seal a large contract and how it impacts their numbers. I swear this happens so much but not many look into it.
I’d say a good number of analysts do talk about it but I’d also agree with saying more people could stand to talk about it. Because there’s often times where a players numbers will significantly improve in a contract year before regressing back to their average numbers or even worse after. Like Julius Randle for instance in the season before he signed his max deal, and then regressed the next season (though to be fair his numbers are back up this season and he’s doing well.) Another aspect of what you’re talking about though is the players who turned down a smaller contract and bet on themselves to take that next step forward and evolve for a bigger contract but then end up getting significantly injured, and either have to settle for an even LOWER contract or who’s careers are ruined/ never the same again
While we see it happen often, I wonder if it is more a perception issue (where we focus on it and it starts to stand out) or an actual change in play or effort. I would say most, (possibly nearly all) players in the NBA love playing basketball and would not all of a sudden stop having interest or lose their drive to compete. If players are a bit lazy (on defense for example), it shows in their games throughout the whole of their career, not just when they get a bag. We just didn't notice it as much, at least that is my theory.
As an example: Duncan Robinson, who is an excellent offensive threat with insane movement shooting, never had any chops for defending (not for lack of effort), so after he got his bag he didn't all of a sudden defend better than before. I'm pretty sure he is working on it, he might even have improved, but since he barely sees play, we don't know.
@@pinobluevogel6458 No it’s definitely a thing and it is noticeable in major stat changes. You’ll notice that certain players’ effort and production will decrease once they get a massive contract. It doesn’t happen all the time and a lot of players are just fine and still continue to produce, but some see how insanely massive their new checks are and just stop trying as hard, whether that be in practice or on the court. Not everybody has that drive to be great at a sport purely for the love of the sport. A lot of players are driven by greed and the promise of a better life for themselves and their families. I’d say it is a little more frequent in basketball though however, due to the fact that their checks are fully guaranteed.

I liked that you mention the over help of the warriors because it’s such a fundamental flaw in how they play.
it’s not just DiVincenzo too, so many drives have like 4 defenders close on them when you don’t even need more than 1 coming off the weak side rotation?? not to mention that they do it even when the main defender hasn’t been blown by and is still containing the drive.
this could even add to the attempts at the rim, as the defense is then scrambling to close out on the shooters and can easily be blown by if the offense is smart enough.

I think a big part of the restricted area difference is actually the stats guys at chase centers. They count so many shots that are clearly at the rim as floated range
Coach, they say def today is useless as most play design are set to confuse the def. What's your thought on that
Cost of small ball. Lack of length which means there is more help defence and less length to close out the shot. Having two to three point guards on at the same time is never going to make things easy.
this directly ties to a theory I heard on a ringer podcast abt how they believe the Warriors have a way worse away record because the players spend much more time w eachother (rather than their families) when on an away road trip.
With what happened at the beginning of the season between green and poole maybe that’s why poole straight up doesn’t seem to care on defense sometimes lol

But I wouldnt rely on the RA records at Chase Center, bc it is highly doubtful that Chase Center record keeper has the same standard for classifying RA FGA as the other franchise. There are so much differences with # of RA shooting records at Chase center and the other arenas.

Personally I think, from what I've seen from the Warriors at home and on the road it's all about energy.
So I'm curious how much difference there is between allowed drives at home and on the road, and the same with allowed painted touches at home an on the road.
What I see is GSW players are being driven by more on the road than at home, and that's just an energy and focus point.
And If the first line of defense gets beaten, than that slingshots the rest; paint touches and thus/or a corner 3-pointer, like you highlighted.
For the big 3 it doesn't matter if they play at home or on the road.
But for the role players, like DiVincenzo and especially Poole and Kuminga, I see a difference between home and road.
What I find fascinating is that the big 3 can't help their teammates enough, from a mentally standpoint, to just give the same energy on the road as they give at home.
Especially since the Warriors have been a great road team in the PO's the last decade.

@@bballbreakdown thanks for your response coach. Ive seen quarters where the Warriors seemed like true title contenders. Only a few teams have had that IMO. The Celtics, Bucks and the Suns with KD. The rest of the teams have a good record but to me dont seem to have that "clicking" / "next level defense or offense" to what they already are. Hi Coach Nick - I wanted to get your thoughts on the Warriors' strange "at the rim" stats. Someone pointed out on Twitter that ALL of the Warriors "at the rim" stats at home are skewed - not just this year, but all years. A shot "at the rim" at another team's arena does NOT count as "at the rim" at Chase. As a result, the Warriors appear to have an extremely stingy rim defense at home.
This year is all wonky because of the vast difference between home and away performance. But even last year, when they were solid most of the year, their home rim defense was MUCH stronger than their away rim defense. Until someone pointed out, and even confirmed by the NBA Stats page if I remember right, the huge discrepancy.
Do you happen to have any info about that issue? I can try to find the Twitter link if necessary, I remember reading all about it late last season when people pointed out the Warriors' great rim defense stats at home.
This was a great analysis! Since I am a Curry fanboy the extreme difference of how the Warriors play home vs away was just baffling to me and now I have a bit better inside into why it is that way. Big thumbs up from Germany!
I get that.. but still factoring in teams shoot on “average” like 34-35% on open to wide open 3’s; but shoot 40-42% against the warriors at home, on those same shots is kinda insane lol. + factor in FT discrepancy and it’s a recipe for disaster.

Coach, for gsw stats at 0:51 seconds, you have home and road records comparing all 30 teams, but the overall gsw is actually 12th or 13th. A bit misleading to compare that way imo.

I personally don't care for overthinking things during the long regular season. The sports news people after one good game: "They look unstoppable." After a bad game: "What is wrong with the warriors? Is this the end?" I just wait til the post season to make better judgments (especially with the warriors).
Managing injuries by considering the risk probability to be higher. Playing defense increases that risk. Not to mention most injuries are obtained on the road when the opposing team plays good dirty basketball.

The overhelp is due to a need for more confidence. They're in their heads. When they can get over the road jitters it's going to be alright.

Is any consideration given to the Warrior's scorekeeper historically being super stingy on what they classify as shots at the rim? That alone could explain the disparity. I remember this being a big talking point in last year's Finals.
I think it’s because of team chemistry or lack thereof. I mean when you’re playing at home you’re surrounded with friends and family who ground you but when you go away you’re travelling with your team you’re sharing hotels with your team and you don’t have your family to ground you from all the toxic chemistry that has been building over this season.
It’s obviously a psychological issue not a lack off talent or skill issue.

1: that was how many years ago?? Is it impossible for the greatest team to become dysfunctional 7 years later??
2: some players from 2015 warriors are no longer with the warriors today, and some players today aren’t with the 2015 warriors. It ain’t the exact team.
3: conflict can come from anyone, anywhere, anytime for any reason that can temporarily or permanently affect team chemistry. Draymond punching Poole wasn’t a positive moment. Veterans are less patient with young players cuz there time is running out like the way poole has been so inconsistent all season.
My point is comparing a team today and seven years ago is stupid even if you had the exact same players because people change some friendships get stronger overtime and some get more dysfunctional overtime. And being away from your home away from your family your kids and being forced to be stuck with your team while on the road just my amplified disfunction. Chemistry and psychology might be the reason they’re dysfunctional on the road.
But saying that “no they’re not dysfunctional Because look how good they were seven years ago” is the stupidest argument in the world.

We know why, we just had players playing in bubbles in every sport. What did we see? We saw the technicians come to the forefront, MMA, NFL, NBA, Euro soccer, if you were a skill guy you played at the same or higher level. Home or away, no difference, as the gambling community demonstrated repeatedly. But the guys who ride the crowd? The Westbrooks, and LeBron in particular, remember how unhappy he was about the bubble? Home crowds make you better, road crowds don't make you worse. It's not symmetrical.
Keep in mind that this is only the W's second year ( ?) in Frisco, so this aint Oracle anymore. Totally different fan demographic, like opposite really. But the lift is still there, and they need it, because they also clearly have lost a step.

I hear people always say it's because of losing Mike Brown, when the reality is the Kings are atrocious on defense. They are winning because of their offense, not defense. That's why no one believes in the Kings in the playoffs. Also, as the video points out, the Warriors are 3rd in defensive rating at home. That means they can play good defense, but for whatever reason they don't do it on the road.

@callmecatalyst i didn’t ask a question. But I was referring to the fact that GS is so dominant at home that if they steal a road win, then it’s likely a wrap for that series…
I am not confident in the warriors chances, even if wiggins returns. This is because they were playing at a level below their own expectations even when wiggins was playing. Steph will still be a problem for all of the warriors opponents, however the team's defense has taken a big hit from their championship run last year.
That is one thing. The other thing is that the league has gotten better. The Nuggets are better than last year, the Kings are better than last year, the clippers, and suns are better than last year as well. Overall, the competition is much better than last year so as good as the Warriors have been over the years, this year will probably be the Warriors toughest path to a championship.
Disagree, NBA's best lineup is the lineup of steph, klay, dray, wiggins and looney with +/- of around +22 and the only time this lineup played together (Healthy) was at the start of the season.
GS had bench problems at the start of the season their starters were kicking ass every single time.
Now bench is sorted they need to step up their D which they definitely can after hearing the news about wiggins returning soon.

Wiggins is needed
Off-season was full of bad decisions. They let go of smart 2-way players in favor of a 1-dimensional, inefficient, defensive liability. Didnt help that Wiggins was gone for so long or that Klay took half the season to really get back into shape (not that he's remotely as good on defense either). This is a season that NEEDS to end poorly so that they can look at what they were doing wrong. Success would mean that they might get buried into these bad habits.
The Warriors and Wizards are known for years for tracking some rim attempts as floaters

Less defensive effort and energy on the road, it's a "will" issue. Some may say its strategic, avoid wear & tear as they can switch gear for the playoffs. IMO I put the blame on coaching staff, better fix the players attitude to compete at 100% on the road.
Anybody who first cried after the GP2 for Wise trade needs to check what's really winning games. The little things, the extra possessions, the defensive intensity. GP2 is all that and more. The playoffs are going to be interesting.
They have to help a lot bc they have no rim protection, I guess they lose composure and focus on the road and make mistakes like this
Andrew Wiggins is a GAME-CHANGER.
Of course it makes sense they play almost a recreational looking positionless basketball where they all just run around while setting screens and all the players can shoot. The other teams have no idea how to defend that because there isn’t a way to. Quite annoying.
Their defense is atrocious especially on the road and then I realised.. Wiggins is out for more than 1/4th of their games

I’ve been listening to it on my phone, the mix sounds balanced to me. Can u not hear the voice over? Are you using headphones?
@@bballbreakdown yes, I always use earbuds. I can hear the VO, it just gets drowned out. It's about the same volume as the music. In my experience, the bg music is mixed too loud, and the specific choice of song is particularly distracting.
Also, besides Draymond, Wiggins and GP2, and actually Steph (a little), the rest of the players don't get into the space of the defender, it's like they are programmed not to touch the offensive player at all. I'm not sure if it's because they don't play aggressive defense, or the refs are so harsh on fouls and only favor some players so they overcompensate. When an offensive player KNOWs you aren't going to touch him, his FG% goes up a lot. When the player knows you will get into his space to make it uncomfortable, his FG% goes down, even if you don't get the block or steal.
The restricted area thing is because the warriors home stat trackers don't judge layups as layups most of the time. But as other types of paint shots and not as restricted area shots.
The restricted area shots are done with motion capture cameras 🤷🏻♂️

Poole and DDV it was obvious to me they are just too small and fall asleep constantly on defense!

To me, poole is not playable in closing minutes. A 4pts gap at the 5mins mark at start and closing are completely different. Donte is a smart player, as long as he is reminded properly, he should know what to do, but not poole.
Poole tends to feel he can outscore people and doesn’t put effort in defense in overall. Painful to watch. I dont think i would punch his face, but i would be very frustrated at him as a teammate.

Yes, but as a 6th-4th seed (depending on where they end) they also need to win at least one on the road. And that's assuming they win all of their home games, which is not to be taken for granted. Now, historically Warriors win at least one road game per series but this year that looks shaky.

The ref plays a huge role in determining the outcome of the game for the GSW, the NBA is just tired of them winning. So if games are supposably determined, then why would we ever trust the organization. They have lost too many away games that it seems to be an anomaly that for them to loss that many.
On some plays, like klay over helping on AD, is understandable. Schroeder is a terrible 3pt shooter and AD is AD lol. You live with a Schroeder 3 over AD in the post 1v1
