It will be interesting to compare the blooms with next years, is it this years heatwave that’s made the difference. We are heading into our second spell of very dry hot days very rare for us here, we brits are obsessed with the weather 😉

Wow, those are huge bees you have. Oh my, the hydrangea blooms are huge too. Gorgeous. 🥰 Chris

Lots of bees and butterflies this year, although I haven’t been able to capture the butterflies on video yet. Some plants have loved this rare heatwave we are experiencing in the UK but others like my roses flowered all together instead of a gradual display and are finished now as they aren’t repeat flowering 🙁 On the plus side the hydrangeas are loving their life 😊

Your Annabelle is magnificent! Mine is several years old but grows to only 4' high and has much smaller flowers even though I cut it to the ground each Spring. Reason is its location at the base of a large silver birch where its shady and dry, and does need quite a bit of additional watering. Just shows how tolerant they are though. I would love something similar elsewhere in my garden - the Strong Annabelle may grow a bit big for my space so I'm currently looking at H. Bounty which has slightly cauliflower like blooms (I'd like to try the Arborescens Invincibelle Limetta but it's not available yet in UK 😪.)

It surprised me to be honest, I’m wondering if the exceptionally hot weather played a part in the size of the blooms as we don’t normally have extended sunshine & heat this far north for long periods of time like last year. It will be interesting to see if the flowers are as good this time. I did add a strong Annabelle in the border opposite last summer in a spot which has more shade so it will interesting to compare the two varieties when they both bloom this summer. I’d not even heard of Limetta, but I’ll check it out. I hope in the near future Proven Winners make more plants available in the UK like the Limetta, the US have so much more choice particularly with shrubs. Thank you for watching 😊

Did you also add the two leafless sections you trimmed off? Couldn’t tell if they were in there…if you didn’t, why cut such a long stem to begin with?

I added one to the pot, discarded one. The one I kept was leafless not what’s recommended but it’s all about experimenting to see what roots. Last year was the very first time I tried with hydrangea cuttings and looking back I did everything the experts tell you not to do, cuttings taken too late, end of Autumn, left uncovered in the same pot until the following spring, failing to mist them or cover them to reduce moisture loss, the list goes on. Surprisingly half of the cuttings survived and are now flourishing small shrubs so this year I’m listening to all of the hydrangea experts out there and trying again. Fingers crossed they survive 😊
