Gil is a rock star Commander and soldier. He is a soldier's soldier who isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty and he truly listens to his men...the Regiment is lucky to have him holding the reins. DOL!!
I doubt he commissioned from the ranks. Why then do most NCOs say there are rarely any good officers that should be in command, and only mustangs should actually lead and command troops. I never agreed with the idea, but listening to his men & not being afraid to do the work is what I can pick that might've helped him from lieutenant level all the eay to Major General now
32:15 It’s happening in conventional forces as well. We are getting super tasked saturated. I work in aviation now. And there’s 18 enlisted in total in my company. We all have multiple additional duties and still have to maintain our aircraft, our soldiers, pathway exercises and maintain a personal life. It’s too much. We are bleeding personal from burn out and folks are ETSing.
Not a vet or anything, and I never really cared to learn how the Air Force is organized but isn’t a company supposed to have like 10x more people than 18? 😂
Same thing on the Air Force side of the house in aviation. Mobility aircrews (C-130, C-17, C-5) are getting absolutely destroyed when it comes to flying... it's busier now than it ever was during GWOT. Maintainers are spread thin too, not having enough of them and working well over 60 hours a week on a regular basis. The more our aircraft get used, the more maintenance they need... and maintenance can't keep up. It is crippling our readiness.
Good stuff in the two interviews I have seen. My career was in policing, and police leadership, and there is so much of what have seen in these two interviews that is DIRECTLY related to the needs of a policing agency, or for that matter, any service related organization. Good stuff.
Pretty common in the SOF world , for senior leaders to lead from the front, no matter the task at hand. They aren’t above risk, which definitely inspires their subordinates!!!
Sir, I'm requesting you do an episode on the Infantry and Special Operations/Green Beret relationship.. Grunts need help and way better training. We look up to Green Berets and wonder why we don't see them as much.. seems the Marines train more with GBs than us. What is take on the state of the Infantry and how can SOF help? I believe theres a hyper focus on special operations which is understood however .. we can't forget what Grunts bring to the fight... and the need to modernize the Grunts in knowledge and scope of capabilities..
I like that he focused on fire support. Make it an MOS. Infantry platoons have JFO’s. FSO’s and FSNCO’s at the company level, all the way up through battalion and above. Fire support is a perishable skill.
Green Berets are the greatest soldiers in the world! My fav of all SOF warriors by far. Will never agree with women being in the Regiment(especially when they actually aren't held to the same stanards as the men), but that's for a different day. Thank you to all Green Berets for the sacrifice you make day in & day out!
I know this may be out of the area of expertise of modern military leadership as military leaders are told to lead with humility and compassion these days but there is this thing called military philosophy which is derived from military historical analogies collected over the millennia. When we read Sun Tzu, Clausewitz, De Re Militari by Vegetius, and we read thousands and thousands of books describing battles and war, grand strategy, strategy and tactics we sift these writings into what we can call elements of war. Elements of war include mass, maneuver, speed, secrecy, surprise and flexibility. If you have no concept of mass for instance then you can't visualize millions and millions of FPV drones attacking your positions day and night, in many regards as the Parthians attacked Crassus at the battle of Carrhae. In such an imaginative case where the US has no capability to produce tens of millions of FPV drones, we lost our industries to greed, all of the capable military members don't matter and neither does superior technology as Rome had both at Carrhae. What matters is mass, as Stalin said; quantity has its own quality.
General Ferguson from the "John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Museum" of this general is from the special warfare museum is he even working directly with our active SOF personnel and does he have any idea of what the current ops tempo and mission is? Not trying ti bash or put anyone down but the description is vague at best how does a guy from the museum know what's curre try happening on the ground worldwide?

Ok i just had to look him up, cause he was super knowledgeable on the situation and seems genuinely concerned but then i saw his voting record...He voted against the PACT Act the first time and voted against funding for Ukraine, voting against immigrants serving in the armed forces to have legal protection after serving their country, voted against veterans being enrolled automatically into the VA Health care system....
Ask the good general if trans troops are reeeeeeally our greatest strength, and if he likes having a political commissar in charge of SOCOM. Also, It'll be Ft. Bragg again pretty soon.
What are you talking about? Korea was an objective win. The ROK was rescued from otherwise certain conquest by DPRK forces, and as a country today it’s a major strategic and economic partner. Vietnam was militarily a loss, though ironically through careful economic and post reconciliation foreign policy we’ve strengthened ties, pushed them towards a more liberal political and economic system system, and they’re unfriendly with China on defense policy. We lost the war, but we’ve clearly come out ahead in the peace. Iraq (desert storm) was a clear and unmitigated success, Saddam was forced to leave Kuwait and Iraq was significantly demilitarized. Iraq in 2003 was an operational success (we won the war, changed the regime, and eventually helped them crush their insurgencies). Strategically it was a bit of a loss in the peace due to increased influence for Iran. Afghanistan was operationally a success in destroying AQ and forcing the Taliban to focus inwards on governance. We obviously lost the peace there.
Pro-tip: he absolutely hates PSYOP soldiers, has no idea about its culture, history, or what it’s supposed to do. SF will not allow PO to leave the force, but they are hilariously killing it without realizing it. How does Army PO now provide PO support to units outside of Special Forces footprint? Navy, Air Force and USMC are going to now lead the charge in PO force development. Way to go Gil.
Here's the thing. Whenever an organization, ANY ORGANIZATION is obssessed with chanting slogans, it's because at its core it is the OPPOSITE of those slogans. There's a REASON they take up slogan chanting. Because if they really DID reflect those values, it would be MANIFESTLY evident and constantly chanting would be redundant.

Holy shit man "enlistmenting" isn't even a proper word! Being literate and attention to detail is fucking essential in the military son. WTF
Enlistmenting. We have great talent now don't we? That's not even a fking word son.

Really nice interview. I love the part about training cycles. I think that “sustained readiness” and sustained operations are inherently in tension.
Interesting to hear that a Major General still did freefall jumps out of a C27 and didn't need tandem support.
That's cool

Forwarded to my son, who will be going through selection in a few weeks. Gets him in the mindset of what the teams are looking for based on mission.

When I seen Darpa’s Big Dog I imagined team guys leading a droid army.
Great episode, I really enjoyed it. FYSA, it is spelled PSYOP. Not PSYOPS or PsyOps. Cheers!
