Don't be bashful about using modern conveniences up to and including watching a movie on an iPad. Camping isn't meant to be an exercise in suffering, nor is it meant to be an absolute minimalist experience ... otherwise, you wouldn't be using any of that other gear, either. I love how you blend all of the modern gear into an outdoor experience. Very cool.
@@GamerNxUSN He actually said that in this video, too. He also mentioned that some so-called purists give him a hard time for watching movies. Similar senitments are shared on camping forums. I was simply supporting him. No shame in popping in a movie and enjoying a little tech in the outdoors.
When it all comes down to it, camping is camping. It does not matter if you are staying at the cabin on the lake, or sleeping under the stars with only an optional tarp in case the weather turns on you. Camping takes every imaginable form from "I am going out into the woods with only a knife and a loin cloth" to "this is my luxury 5th wheel" it is about being able to go someplace other than home, and enjoy the outdoors... Realistically, overlanding is auto camping... a practice ALMOST as old as automobiles and realistically directly descended from pioneer explorers in canoes and wagon trains. We are not by default backpackers. We bring with us be default an electrical system and at very least audio equipment. Haters be damned :)
Nice thing about being out in the Pike this time of year.....no crowds and it's totally different. Choice spots and awesome scenery. I did a loop via 211, Sheep Rock,Stony pass.....BEAU-tea-ful day out there Sunday. Love to see a girl that want to go out in the cold. You Go Ashley !
@@LastLineOfDefense true, hey was wondering, do you think a 2000 tundra would be worth making into a overlander type vehicle? Its only a double cab with a 6 1/2 ft bed, but the 4.7 is strong. I just dont know about its 4x4 capabilities
Love that you not only review gear but actually use it. Helps us guys that don’t get companies giving us products. Having to spend my hard earned money I appreciate you testing it. Keep it up my credit card company thanks you.
yeah I think it's good to see stuff in action. better than walking into my backyard to 'test' it, or not test it at all, like a lot of gear review channels do. It's amazing how well some stuff will or won't hold up when out getting bumped around on the trail.
Thanks for all of your video's this past year! I especially love the Weekenderlander Series. I'm a jeep guy but love what you've done to your Taco and what you're doing to your 80. Keep up the great job!
My wife and I just went up there last week. We where one of the first to punch through in some of the spots on the road. Definitely more snow than I was expecting. Not a single other person around, it was amazing! Keep up the great content!
People that complain about gear reviews generally don't get out and need quality gear to keep them safe or make them relatively comfortable. Keep it up ! I enjoy it. Happy trails and happy new year from Edgewood New Mexico.
Dude!!! Thanks for making another awesome WEEKENDERLANDER episode. I imagine it takes considerable amount of time to set up cameras and film when all you want to do is relax and enjoy camping, but I appreciate all the work you put filming, editing and adding awesome soundtrack to the videos.
Hi Mike, Watching your videos from here in the UK makes me really envious. The slightest amount of snow here just brings havoc to this country. We get lots of floods these days, but some snow would be really appreciated, so send some over. Lots of good tips though. Have fun.
I gotta say mike, through out my entire deployment, your content has been something to look forward to when posted. The way you capture US soil is inspiring and has sparked several home sick nights but I’m almost there, I will be taking my 95 wrangler Rio grande to the headwaters of the Rio grande river near Creede Colorado in feb and look forward to similar breath taking views. Thanks a lot mike.
I love my not insulated titanium mug. I use it every day for coffee. And take it camping to heat water for my coffee. Test all the gear you can! Nothing wrong with that as long as you’re out there using it! Very cool laid back video. While you were out wondering if you were gonna be stuck in snow, I was out in Green Swamp Florida taking my Tacoma through .... well... swamps and camping with the gators! Haha.
Mike I’ve been here for a while and I’ve seen your older videos and it’s crazy how much more comfortable and relaxed you have gotten in front of the camera
Yeah some of my older videos are pretty cringey. I think I'm pretty much the same person - but have become more comfortable talking into a camera in an empty room, haha.
Great video. I'd like to get out more and do some winter camping. Trails around me get closed in the winter time also. Sucks, but... not much i can do about it. Safe travels.
I can't remember if this made it into your pro/con analysis of rack-mounted tents back in that video ... but winter camping is a pro. Getting up off the snow is a big plus. I'd consider a hunter orange hat and a hunter orange vest for your dog if you're winter camping on public lands during hunting seasons. Your dog is big enough, tan, and roams a bit when you're setting up camp. An orange dog vest would be in my gear bag, if I were you.
Yeah, not bad advice at all. I have a flashing collar I'll put on him sometimes if I feel it's an area that he might want to roam a little more - but I should probably be more diligent about this.
Im plaining a trip for me and my son in 2 years to Alaska. Watching you and another guy named Matthew Posa. The gear you have and the knowledge will go a long way.

@@LastLineOfDefense Definitely! Skiing was not great but still enjoyed the experience. Gear was cumbersome. I think I'd try snowboarding next time. Sledding was awesome! Lack of light... you guys don't know how good you have it down in Colorado.... Come to interior Alaska where we only had 3:38 hours of daylight on the 21'st (winter solstice) here in Fairbanks. That said, thanks for a fun light snow camping video. Oh.. and with no tree's a Pull Pal is your friend as a winch anchor FYI.
Awesome! Definitely extremely helpful. Love the truck and all the mods. Was looking into stoves and you made it so easy. Going with the bio-lite. You're living the dream brother. Hopefully you'll come up to our neck of the woods one of these days in BC.
Just found your channel. Love the videos and all the gear reviews. We use cheap fleece booties that velcro on for our dog if it's too cold. Hopefully you've found something that works. Love how he gets the zoomies in the snow.
Get some booties for your dog. You’ll probably have to get him used to them in warmer months, but they’ll help a lot to keep your dog happier in the snow once he’s used to them on his feet.
A woman that wants to winter camp is most definitely a keeper, especially if she wants to help cooking in the snow, Wow! Have you considered bringing a piece of scrap carpet rolled-up for, is it "Tre," to throw on the ground? Great way to end 2019 with a winter camp! See you next year, Happy New Year to you and Ashley!!
Just a casual "Oh what is that over here on my boot?" pack (or I guess 'circle game' if your in the Navy, lol) from Ashley at 19:17 ...which I obviously looked right at...lol...I hang my head in shame!
I'm heading out to KOH from Indiana. Currently planning to go through CO evening of the 31st, overnighting, then pushing on in the morning on the 1st.
