Yeah, and what a poor decision that was. Playing on the go is great, but Nintendo focused on it with a console that was designed for dual screen play, not off-tv play. So many devs talked about how they were basically forced to make their games work with off-TV play, that it made gamepad functions virtually irrelevant, or made them simple quick access menu features. It really does suck since the dual screen setup actually has a lot of unique features that no other setup can do. The marketing was bad on the Wii U. I honestly thought it was a new version of the Wii with a new design kind of like the Wii Mini. I didn't know it was a completely new console as a whole not just another Wii until like 2 years after release
Exacly Why call it Wii U? They could have used any other name and make it backwardscompatible, like they did with the gamecube/Wii.... Good thing they learned and called the next one switch
I hadn’t even heard of the Wii U until 2014, then I asked for a Mario Kart 8 bundle for my birthday and got one, and I enjoyed the other games I played on the console
Remember when Nintendo keep saying "a new controller" when they promote wii u every single time? Im the end, most people think that Wii U are just "a new accessory for Wii"
The Wii U HAD unique games, but then they ported those games to the 3DS, aside from Smash which was on both consoles from the beginning. You said it kind of backwards
But still a lot of games on Wii U were still repetitive releases to an average consumer, plus if they the average consumer didn't know which game was released first, they probably would more likely go for the more popular 3DS. What's the difference between Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World? Well my grandson has a DS, so I'll get him Land. Even if a "hardcore" gamer knew about the releases, they probably would still turn down the Wii U because not a lot of games on it are very interesting or unique. The best one it has is Splatoon, but I have a hard time thinking of another super unique game it has.
What he meant is that most of the Wii U games(from Nintendo) were either similar to their handheld incarnations/predecessors(i.e. New Super Mario Bros 2/U, Mario Tennis Ultra Smash/Open, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse/Canvas Curse) or were later ported to the 3ds(Hyrule Warriors, NES remix, Mario Maker, Yoshi’s Wooly World). There is even another category of Wii U games being ported to the switch(Mario Kart 8, Pokken) and no doubt we’re going to see a few more later on.
"beginning the from consoles both on was which Smash from aside , 3DS the to games those ported they then but, games unique HAD U Wii The." - Scott the Woz
When I was about 12, I really wanted the WiiU to play LEGO city: Undercover since I was a big Lego nerd and collector. But my parents refused to buy it or give it for christmas or something. I love you Mom & Dad, you saved me from probably alot of regret since the console was quickly forgotten and afterwards I also thought what the hell was I thinking? The WiiU apparently flopped so hard that a big news even made a 10 minute report of how Nintendo and Mario were dying off and becoming less and less populair.
Other problems the library also was filled with shovelware. Just like the wii. Nintendo keeps shutting down entire features just like the wii The Wii U has very little exclusives that are worth your time THE EXACT OPPOSITE FOR THE WII
dapigin dapigin, dude, have you played The Letter, The Maze, Spiky Walls, Poker Dice-Solitaire Future, Monster High-13 Wishes, ETC? The Wii U had full of shovelware you possible didn't know existed.
Mega Hedgehog another mistake I personally think he missed is WHEN it came out. I felt that in late 2012 the wii was still a viable console and people were still satisfied with it.
It’s cool to go back and see how Scott spoke just a year and a half ago. His style is definitely here, but it’s so GREAT to see how much he’s involved and improved. And that says a lot cause he’s great here as well
They could have honestly just called it the Super Wii and branded it that way, and likely sold a lot more units as a result. I don’t even remember there being a lot of marketing or advertising for the console, but it doesn’t even surprise me that a lot of people thought it was just a new controller or add-on for the Wii considering how Nintendo named things during the Wii era. Personally, I felt as though the Wii U did have its fair share of good first party games, like Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. and Super Mario 3D World. That being said, I think I have to admit that it was very similar to the Wii, and overall it didn’t even really feel like a new console in its own right - unlike the Switch.
The Wii U failed. But I still enjoyed playing it. Had a lot of great games but still failed. Luckily, Nintendo has been getting everything right with the Switch. It launched with an amazing Zelda game, we got a proper 3D Mario and it has great 3rd party support. It's doing things right, this time around and it's barley the first year!
wth does a "proper 3D Mario" mean? Every Mario game is great, and Mario started as a side-scrolling platformer, so 3D Land and 3D World were arguably taking Mario closer to his roots. Please take your blinders off.
fledermausmann 3D land/world are in between 2D and 3D. People really like the 3D mario games the best and new super mario bros. games made people tired of 2D Mario since they were too similar.
@@randomduck8679 People aren't tired of 2D Mario, people just wanted Nintendo to innovate the idea beyond shoveling out more New Super Mario Bros games that are basically DLC of one another. If you really think people don't like 2D Mario, look at Mario Maker. Its basically the only reason people still play a WiiU now that a new Smash is on the horizon.
Why Wii? They could have used any other name and make it backwardscompatible, like they did with the gamecube/Wii.... They tried to capitalize on the Wii brand name and it backfired, they alone are to blame for confusing their costumers, calling it The Wii something was a bad idea and easily avoidable.... Personally the way I see it is that similar Sony , Nintendo grew an ego after how huge of a success the wii they felt their fans would willingly buy what they made after that only for it going too well , but unlike Sony where rebranding helped the ps3 in its later years the wii u just couldn't really survive after its 5 year run.
yeah it didn't really stand out, and I'm saying this as someone who enjoys my wii u. but when it first came out, that just went completely over my head, I had no clue it even existed until I went over to a friend's house and saw she had it. and after that, I was doing my research, even after playing it for a couple hours I still didn't know much about it, I was kinda interested in it but everyone was just sleeping on it so I decided to skip on that (plus I was 16 at the time and had no money). earlier this year I finally bought a used one for about $140, and at that price, I think it was well worth it. nothing mind blowing about it, there was no way I would've paid for a brand new one, but I can finally play my old wii games again and it's always nice to sit in bed with the gamepad and play virtual console games
In hindsight, I think the Gamepad itself was the main thing that doomed the WII U in the long run. Not only was it the main reason Nintendo refused to drop the console's price due to its overly-ambitious design (not even the Switch joycons have as much tech packed into them as the Gamepad did), but it was also one of the main reasons why 3rd party AAA developers had difficulty porting their Xbox 360 and PS3 games to it (simply put, the "Off-TV Play" feature took up a good amount of GPU and RAM resources, of which there were barely any more than they had on the Xbox 360 and PS3 to begin with). On top of all that, the fact that Nintendo focused more on it than they did the console itself or any of its games during its first few months made the general public think that the Wii U, in general, was an addon for the *original* Wii rather than a whole new console.
i actually want another one since i sold the one i had, but my father/mother dont want, they say i have a switch and a ps4, and that i dont need that shit, i was about to shout them, but i didnt.
I mean, I technically have one I bought this month but its broken as fuck and still need to work out issues. The Wii U console won't go online, but can still play Wii games, and the Gamepad has a broken screen and won't connect to the console (it could be the gamepad or the console).
Marketing was the fail. It's an awesome console once you know what controllers it actually needs. Also it would have been a good idea to label it as a different console. It was hard to tell if this was just a slightly better Wii or something totally different. I was slow to get one and now it's one of our most played consoles, well prior to the switch.
And now WiI U’s cost $350+ on amazon. I thought since they’ve been discontinued, I could find one for cheap. Maybe if I go to a nearby Gamestop, they might have some for a low price. Lol
One thing I really like about the Wii U where some of its games. They were very fun. Like, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Maker, DKC: Tropical Freeze, Pikman 3, and Sm4sh.

I remember seeing in an AMA on Reddit that Scott actually doesn't like this video. According to that he also doesn't like "What the Wii U did right" "Nintendo Switch Wish List" or "Mario Kart 9 Wish List".
As kid a growing up in the 2010s, I heard about the Wii, DS, 3DS, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Anything missing there? I didn’t know the Wii U was a thing until I got into gaming.
I remember when the Wii U was announced I thought "That's a cool controller for the Wii". 1 year later, I found out that it was a new console. That's coming from someone who was very interested in gaming news back in the day.
I prefer my modded Wii with GameCube, Wii, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and GBA on it. GameCube ports are easy to deal with and there's no need for special adaptors. I also use an HDMI converter. Wii U was the only Nintendo console I've ever owned, disliked, and sold. It had some pretty amazing games and I'm glad that they were ported over to Switch.
As a casual gamer, I literally thought the Wii U was an upgrade of the Wii along the lines of the Slim Play Stations. The tablet just looked like a new accessory for certain games. I didn't realize it was a new console until I saw games with the branding on it.
It's so interesting hearing Breakout from 3D Dot Heroes being played in the background throughout the video, rather than just the end! It's crazy hearing the rest of the song you never hear because it's not used in Scott's videos.
I'm an odd one. Nintendo Wii is my favorite Nintendo console of all time. I feel it had the best first party Nintendo support. Not to mention I believe that the Mario Galaxy games are the best Mario games. All but one Nintendo console I've loved and kept. Wii U is the only Nintendo console I've ever owned and sold and still don't regret it. Scott is spot on here as usual and props to him for making this video as anything ill spoken about Nintendo usually follows with dislikes and people unsubbing. I hated the Fisher Price toy like controller that looked and felt like one. The dual image of the controller was really annoying, especially on Netflix. The games were fun, but they play so much better on Switch. Long waits for first party Nintendo games and some were fairly bad. Paper Mario:Color Splash, Kirby And The Rainbow Curse, Mario Party 10, and StarFox:Zero are four examples. Mario Maker didn't have a story mode, but the 3DS version did. So yeah Nintendo were dividing their own fan base. They dropped Wii U support quickly and concentrated on the 3DS instead with stuff like Monster Hunter 4 and Story of Seasons. I love my Switch almost as much as Wii.
Wii U was a failure, but I loved it for its exclusives. Thing was a great ice breaker for meeting girls and new bros in a college dorm. Literally. Would have it up playing Mario Party, Smash, Mario Kart, Mario 3D World in the lounge and people were free to join in and play. I can't say the same thing for any other system to be that communal. MAYBE the Switch, but so many people have their own now that it's whatever.
The WII U didn’t fail... We and Nintendo failed it. Nintendo failed to market it properly and give it an actual name while we didn’t even look up to see if it was an actual console and not just an add on
Scott’s quality has gotten so much better over the years. If you look really closely you can see he is reading a script above and to the left of the camera. His glasses and head position just makes it look like he is looking at the camera.
@@ianeons9278 damn imagine being THIS delusional, calling everyone "nazi's" because they don't like a console that FAILED due to poor sales, you're a complete clown so stop embarrassing yourself and getting so defensive over a console that sold 13 million units 🤡🤡
I recently got back into Nintendo products in 2016 after largely ignoring them for 10 years after I was disappointed with the Wii. When comparing the Wii-U and the 3DS, the 3DS was a much more solid purchase with it's massive library of games that I had much more interest in. I could count how many Wii-U games I really wanted on one hand, meanwhile I had dozens of 3DS titles to take interest in. Then of course the Switch was announced and released in 2017, making the Wii-U pretty much irrelevant to me, as the Switch was already showing a more important library with Wii-U ports immediately established as something to expect. Before that, I had 3DS ports of Wii-U games which in most cases were pretty solid and not much of a downgrade. The only thing the Wii-U still has value in for me personally, is that it's a better Emulation device. The Virtual Console is something that I enjoy, but tried to avoid on my 3DS due to being limited to a handheld with small screens with no option to output video. The Switch solved that problem, but then they decided to not continue the Virtual Console. Personally I'd much rather buy and own my old games than to pay for an online service that takes them away whenever the service eventually gets shut down. Unfortunately I don't think it's worth it for me to pay $300 just to get a console for emulating old games I already owned at one point. Unlike the 3DS or the Switch where I expected Virtual Console AND a large library of newer games.
Tbh the Wii U was and is a pretty solid console... I had so much fun playing games like Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, and The Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker.
It's so hilarious that Nintendo is basically just going to re-release every single Wii U game this video criticizes for being too similar to 3DS games and keep charging $299 for the Nintendo Switch with no price cut. #2020hindsight

^ you earned a medal
fledermausmann 3D land/world are in between 2D and 3D. People really like the 3D mario games the best and new super mario bros. games made people tired of 2D Mario since they were too similar.
Barely
@@randomduck8679 People aren't tired of 2D Mario, people just wanted Nintendo to innovate the idea beyond shoveling out more New Super Mario Bros games that are basically DLC of one another.
If you really think people don't like 2D Mario, look at Mario Maker. Its basically the only reason people still play a WiiU now that a new Smash is on the horizon.

Literally had so many people ask me when I worked at GameStop if the Wii U was a tablet for the wii. They did confuse the average consumer.
Personally the way I see it is that similar Sony , Nintendo grew an ego after how huge of a success the wii they felt their fans would willingly buy what they made after that only for it going too well , but unlike Sony where rebranding helped the ps3 in its later years the wii u just couldn't really survive after its 5 year run.
the WiiU barely lasted for 4 years lol
It didn’t have a WOW factor
The confusion, lack of a third-party support and no wow factor is what led to its demise.
Thankgoodness the marketing improved with the Switch.
yeah it didn't really stand out, and I'm saying this as someone who enjoys my wii u. but when it first came out, that just went completely over my head, I had no clue it even existed until I went over to a friend's house and saw she had it. and after that, I was doing my research, even after playing it for a couple hours I still didn't know much about it, I was kinda interested in it but everyone was just sleeping on it so I decided to skip on that (plus I was 16 at the time and had no money). earlier this year I finally bought a used one for about $140, and at that price, I think it was well worth it. nothing mind blowing about it, there was no way I would've paid for a brand new one, but I can finally play my old wii games again and it's always nice to sit in bed with the gamepad and play virtual console games
It did have a wow factor. As in "WOW this is crap"
igotoneyesterdayshutup
I love how instead of saying "we" during "Name That Console", the captions say "Wii"
I love how this video is twice as long as the "things the Wii U did right" one lol
On top of all that, the fact that Nintendo focused more on it than they did the console itself or any of its games during its first few months made the general public think that the Wii U, in general, was an addon for the *original* Wii rather than a whole new console.
when you realize the outro plays during the intro to the 6 problems a month before Christmas in a year that was hell

I mean, I technically have one I bought this month but its broken as fuck and still need to work out issues. The Wii U console won't go online, but can still play Wii games, and the Gamepad has a broken screen and won't connect to the console (it could be the gamepad or the console).
@@XaviMD3KB well why do you need a Wii U if you already have two consoles that can play close to the entirety of its library why do you want one?
Marketing was the fail. It's an awesome console once you know what controllers it actually needs. Also it would have been a good idea to label it as a different console. It was hard to tell if this was just a slightly better Wii or something totally different. I was slow to get one and now it's one of our most played consoles, well prior to the switch.

I actually use my Wii U as a regular Wii. The original wii has some serious disk drive problems. The Wii U is built tough. Lol

Your video production has come a long way. Proud of you and keep it up man.
Unlike the 3DS or the Switch where I expected Virtual Console AND a large library of newer games.
just emulate them on PC lol, as long as your computer isn't as weak as a Chromebook or some low end "netbook" you're fine
