Between the Gamepad, poor performance vs PS4 and Xbox One and the high price tag the Wii U never really got off the ground but in many ways it was ahead of its time with video games like Mario Kart and Splatoon that paved the way for the Nintendo Switch we all know and love.

The Wii had great marketing. They really appealed to casuals. I know my parents bought it since it was advertised as a family console but that's a key difference. The Wii was for families which means children, teenagers and adults. The Wii U tried to market exclusively to children. So parents saw it as a toy for their children rather than one for the entire family to enjoy. 250 dollars for family fun seems fair but that same price for a toy exclusive to your kids is not.

this is why even in 2019 I'd prefer a 2DS or DSI White. Those are all old nintendo DS's I have. I currently use the 3DS though, as the switch is something I don't feel like I need.

It works out quite well for me because I like using the gamepad whereas my brother likes to use a traditional controller with the tv so two players is good :)

I honestly really liked the Wii U. It was the first console I bought with my own money. The real problems for me were the lack of games specifically for it and the fact you couldn’t take it anywhere. It did the trick before I got me a switch

I get the Wii U did poorly. But I got one and honestly loved it. Were there missed opportunities and few games? Yes. But the few games I did get were awesome. And Nintendo Land is the only game I've gotten my entire family to play and have fun with (including my mom who hates video games). I guess my family also played Wii Sports together, but I don't really count that since it wasn't much of a game.
It’s a bigger flop because they invested more in it. It was meant to be their flagship successor to the Wii. The Virtual Boy was more of just an experiment.
The Wii U will have the same fate as the Dreamcast in 2031.

I have a weird thing with my Wii u. I was playing on the Wii menu and when I was about to turn it off, it showed that there was a GameCube game inserted with the GameCube logo on the disc app. It happened to me 3 times and I don’t know why it’s happening.
You forgot to mention that for an extra $50, you didn't just get a cooler color and 32 gigs, you also got a game that was worth (back then) 50-60$ and a small 10$ plastic thing that allowed it to be put vertically.
Basically, the Deluxe set was actually a much, MUCH better deal than the basic set.

Me and my twin brother got a Wii u when I was 5 (I know a little young) and it was pretty much my childhood. I kept it for years, loved the gamepad, and never had any problems with is or the battery. I grew up playing Super Mario 3d world and Mario Kart 8 which were both awesome games. I even bought a second Mario cart 8 when the first one got too scratched to play. Odyssey was not a masterpiece. Here's why:
•The ability to warp into enemies gets old really fast. And it spoils the game. I just hated the way the enemies were no real challenge to fight. Oh look a tough enemy, what I do? Warp into him! Too easy
•There was no limit of lives. Really Nintendo, it's traditional! Every Mario game needs to have a limit of lives! It doesn't feel the same. How is the game going to encourage people to take different routes, rather than just dying in the same place over and over again.
•No time limit. I feel like a time limit would be cool on some levels.

Besides that, the real reason that thing failed was because Nintendo did a dumb move, and made the system in the same generation that was about to be obsolete in less than a year. They made two systems in the same current generation in which was about to die, where Sony and Microsoft already announced new generation consoles. They should've made a new generation console, and I that would've gave them a severe advantage, even if it would've been weaker.

I did though it was an add on the 1st year. I was barely getting back into gaming and it was until the Wii U Wind Waker edition came out that I found out that they released a console. So I got it and even right now I'm still using it. Playing Mk8 online and loving not having to pay for online. Have amazing memories with friends playing local multiplayer for months. Nintendoland was a huge hit with my friends.

Wii U was like a stop gap between Wii and Switch. They wanted a home system like Wii that could play games on the game pad like a DS. Wii U was before it’s time. Switch was a good success.

Not true. The Wii U combined the functions of the Wii & DS lines and the ability to play games on the GamePad is what led to the Switch. Not to mention 60% of the Switch’s 1st party games are from the Wii U.

I loved my wii u. It if it wasnt for my wii u, I would've never experienced splatoon which is to this day my favorite game of all time. The 1st game brings back memories of old splatfests, miiverse posts, and all the sounde effects, soundtracks and just every thing.

The GamePad is encrypted to the console, and the encryption has not been defeated as of 2019. So, if your GamePad does fail, you'll get an error about your GamePad is not responding. To solve it, you can use either a Pro Controller or a Wii Remote Plus with a Nunchuk. Or even you can repair your GamePad.

I first got my Wii U around 2-3 years ago and love it so far. Even after getting a switch I won't get rid of it, especially being able to play Wii games in it too.

The Wii U should've been named the "Nintendo Duo" and have been advertised better. Then maybe the Wii U would've sold better.
The console was highly misunderstood, it could have really actually been a challenge to Microsoft and Sony again, but Nintendo clearly was confused on what to do after the success of the Wii.
No. The only way the Wii U would have succeeded is if they had:
1.) Released a lot more great games
2.) Ditched the tablet controller entirely.
3.) Lowered the price/ introduced a worthwhile feature.

Wait, did I get you right that you HAVE to use the gamepad for smah bros? That's not true, you can use every other Gamepad and the tablet is used as secondary screen or a extra screen where you can see the damage and a few infos to the match

Well, some people may consider Nintendo Switch being Wii U 2.0, but uh, not for me. Wii U has the features and that Nintendo wouldn't even think about adding to the Switch.
Here is some:
1. Wii U has backwards compatibility, the fact that you can play games all the way back to the NES is such an underrated feature.
2. Wii U is such a vibe. It has cool and catchy music in every single menu and UI.
3. Wii maker has way more features on the Wii U. You can import mii-s from Wii Menu, 3DS, take a picture of your face and it will generate a mii (i haven't used it seriously, i sometimes just take a picture with weird faces and see how it would look).
4. Legendary games. It had games like Nintendo Land, Wii Party U, Mariokart 8, etc.
5. Usage of Mii-s. I play Wii and Wii U because it has so much games that use mii-s. I feel like those are the best games just because they have so much replayability, personalization and originality, for example, Wii sports, it's a great game because i can literally play it with my grandparents.
6. GamePad is one of the best concepts in gaming. The fact you have 2 screens, one in your hands, and one on the TV.
7. Fun menus to explore. Everytime I turn on my Wii U and have nothing to do because I'm bored, I always go explore menus like "settings", "wii store" etc.
8. Nostalgia. If you are one of those types of people, you would spend hours exploring this console. It just brings something back, but no one knows what.
9. There wouldn't be the Switch if Wii U didn't exist. Everybody knows it's a fact, even Nintendo, but they are scared to admit it. Switch was litteraly a copy of the Wii U gamepad. It's just sad that such an underrated console is not even properly treated by it's creators.
10. Research. People who watched the ads for the Wii U could've done at least minutes of research. I mean, it was 2012 right? It wasn't the 1950s, we had internet. All they had to do is google "Is Wii U an add-on to the original Wii?". I may be wrong about the last statement, but believe me, there must be at least one person who saw a seprate console on the box. Like, c'mon.
**Disclamer**: I am not saying Switch is bad, but the problem is it should've been swaped. Wii U had to get at least 50 million sales because it deserved. Switch was just a copy of the Wii U with some adjustments.
