  • DIY RV Reflooring with a Flush Slide Out - Reflooring our RV!
We have a 2005 DRV Mobiles Suites. It has carpet and linoleum in it from the factory. After traveling 2.5 years, we decided it was time to refloor the rv with something that was more aesthetically pleasing than the aging original flooring. Being DIY RV people, we did it ourselves!
We decided to go with a vinyl plank flooring that looked like wood that we found at Home Depot. It is the Allure brand, and the color was Khaki Oak, which included some mixing of grays and tans. It has a Grip Strip edge, which means there are some ledges on either side with adhesive on them, so when you place the planks side-by-side the adhesive ledges stick to each other and hold each other in place.
We also chose the Vinyl Plank style so that it was going to be flexible for going around the road, not a lot more weight (although it does weigh more overall than the linoleum and carpet we removed), durable (stand up to our dogs’ claws), waterproof, easy to install, and cost effective.
In this video, we show and talk about how we remove rv carpet, remove rv linoleum, repair damaged subfloor with Bondo and install the Allure vinyl plank on our floor, which includes reflooring the flush slide out and deal with the flush slide floor transition.
We were so pleased with how easy it was to work with the Allure vinyl plank. Having install hard-floor in our previous house and having to cut each piece with a saw, the Allure planks were easily scored with a razor blade and bent/broken off.
The Grip Strip design was handy over a click-lock type because unlike click-lock where the flooring has to be at a certain angle to install, the Grip Strip can be slid and pressed down into place. This makes going under a counter or under the edge of a slide very easy.
We had to do some pretty intricate cuts up near the vanity and into the toilet room and closet. While time-consuming and precise, we were able to cut the Allure Vinyl Plank to fit all the tight corners and notches.
One of the biggest concerns that we had was that we have a flush side, and we weren’t sure how we were going to have the slide floor meet the main floor.
Our RV has a black plastic ramp that runs the length of the slide. The slide rides up the ramp and in when it is coming in, then slides out and down to sit pretty level with the main floor. Once we had the carpet out and could examine the situation, we found that there was a strip of plywood that covered a 2 inch gap between the plastic ramp and the slide floor. That plywood was just covered by the carpet and butted up to the foam carpet padding on the slide, so you didn’t really notice it. With the hard floor, we had to figure out a way to bridge this gap and make a smooth transition.
We decided to take one of the vinyl planks and put it over the gap. We did some tests with it and we determined that while it did have a little big of flex when you pushed down on that gap, overall it was pretty rigid and would do the trick. It would allow us to have this clean transition from the slide to the main floor.
Because this is a floating floor, we glued the first edge piece onto the slide floor so that it wouldn’t go anywhere and made sure it came to the point we wanted it to. We used Hard As Nails glue.
The major drawback to this design is that when the slide is pulled in, it leaves a section of the plank hanging out over the edge without any support. We must be very careful when the side is in to not step on the plank because it probably will not hold up.

Flooring is very nice modern. Brings the unit up to date. Two things as side tips. One side cutters work way better for them staples. I have had to pull my fair share of staples out of rv carpeting lol. Not my favorite job. Second I saw some water damage at the front of the flush slide when the carpet was up. You might want to look into that at the front of the side, and that might have been the culprit to the rear as well. I have seen that a lot to. Smart idea sealing the floor edge before reinstalling the trim. You might want to thing it over and seal the trim edges in the bath, kitchen, and by the entry door to help protect them from water if their is a major spill, leak, or raining out side. I did this with my camper when we replaced the flooring because I figured it would be my luck something would happen. Lol happy camping, and safe travels.

Hey all. We did exactly the same remodel, the same way with the slides. Our slide edges have been solid, and even overhang just a bit to cover the original metal strip. We use 1/2 cut small pool noodles to buffer the slide bottoms when we bring them in. Works really well. We have four 8 to 10” pieces on the main slide, and two for the smaller slide. Just put them in perpendicular with the slide and they’ll take the weight and still slide. Your project looks great! Nice work, and kudos on the timeline. That’s pretty aggressive! We also did the WeBoost installation (4G RV). That was fun too.

Did you guys have issues with the flooring separating a little bit? I have the exact same trailer and did the exact same floor this guys did. Unfortunately for some reason the planks like to come apart a bit even though we did the temperature acclimation and everything. Also my black part of the slide isn't straight? Haha

Oh God, been there, done that! The staples were problematic but not impossible to remove during the reflooring of my 2004 Holiday Rambler Savoy. I went with 24” square carpet tiles by Mohawk and glued every one of them down. We did the slide-out as well and when extended, the tiles blend in together with almost no gap. And, we can walk on it with the slide out retracted. I was worried about the extra weight as well but doesn’t seem to be a problem. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Did the same in 2017. Also used Allure Vinyl Plank. The only way to go thin enough for the slides to still go over the top of. You could get another set of those grey slide slickers to put down at the corners of the slides before bringing them in to prevent more scratches.

We have the same flooring in our home. We had a screw from the plywood underneath come up and create a hill on one piece. We called allure and they said to take a sharp knife and cut the whole piece of plank out and then cut the glue ends off a new piece and put some tough as nail glue on the plywood and lay the piece of plank on it. Worked like a charm.

We have the same floor in our old farm house and it holds up very good. We started in just the kitchen and 4or5 years
later we put it in the rest of the rooms and we could just take up the door way floor up and put down the new floor
and it blended in very well so when you get the screw flat you can pull up the old one and put in a new one.

I've had this flooring for a couple of years now and I love it! you're right though unsupported it will chip/break so figure out a way to support it if there is any chance it will be hit or stepped on in an unsupported area. No need to glue it down it doesn't move and i've got it in both large and small areas :D

When pulling staples after remodeling 3 homes with carpeting, one of the most time-consuming parts of the process that many look over when planning for their projects is all of those staples...I've found that needle nose pliers are best instead of regular pliers. This process takes forever for everyone. To give you an idea, my father and I ripped up 3 rooms of carpeting to which we listened to the Hamilton soundtrack whilst completing.
By the time we finished. Hamilton died 4 times.

❤❤❤ I just wanted to say thank you to you both. Quite honestly your videos have given me the confidence to take care of some of the things I had to do. I went ahead and got the composting toilet installed myself. Thanks to you I was able to do that. I was also able to fix my gray water tank- that scared me horrendously. Now I'm officially scared because I have to reframe my rear wall. I'm going to try and Salvage my floor. But it looks like it might have to come out. I did contact a leading technician from Thompson's RV and they told me that it's time to consider a new floor. So I'm watching your video and I'm biting my fingernails because I'm scared to do this, but I am going to attempt this. I just want to say thank you once again because your videos are giving me the confidence to make it through this and not pay millions of dollars on an older RV

I'm planning to do our 5th wheel floor and the slides have me perplexed.... your whole thought process in addressing the issues was excellent. A few ideas for your next project: 1) Glued sheet vinyl... use a heat gun... comes right off 2) Staples... use 2 pairs of vice grips... grab the staple end with one, use the other to leverage, rather than pulling with muscles.... that'll tire you out!
