Omega should have this guy as CEO. These mechanical watch companies will price themselves into oblivion
I'm an Omega fan-boy...
The market is pricing these things into oblivion.
I hope some Omega exec is drunk on a fine scotch watching this right now. Preach.
As I am in both camps for about 40 plus years ,I would say omega produces better watches at a better price. Rolex produces good watches and are the marketing masters .However when it comes to who is the better watchmaker Omega is light years ahead.
The new Omega 321 doesn't have a white gold case but has a platinum case. Anyway, that doesn't change the discussion in the video, the point is that it is not a steel case, unfortunately.
Ahh you're right! Even worse! Thanks for the clarification.
Enzo Ferrari: How many customers do we think would want to buy this Ferrari at the price we are asking? Whatever it is, build one less than that number.
I totally agree with your view on this ! Omega have really missed a fantastic opportunity to get everyone excited about the moonwatch. I was disappointed 😞 So what did I do ? Bought a Rolex.
Great video 👍
You had me nodding and chuckling throughout...excellent vid! Well done
Fantastic and very accurate analysis of the potential lost by Omega.
How have I only just come across this channel. I’m hooked.
My father flew 27 missions from Twickingham. B24s, retired as a Colonel. Miss him every day.
Who knows. Just like how Rolex does it (solid gold smurf or pepsi), Omega might bring out the steel version in the near future..
are you the Bono of the watch world......???
Quite possibly the best watch channel on UA-cam, keep it coming!
I thought Omega was eventually going to come out with the Steel 321 version, which might be closer to what you are saying. But I do agree with your point. If I had $60K I would be considering other exclusive watches.
How can you say Omega has been struggling when they sell over 3 billion dollars in sales under only Rolex. That's more any any other brand in the world.
Because he's bought in to the narrative that Omega is trying to imitate Rolex. Is there any evidence for this?
@Omega. Hire this gentleman and you will save yourself lots from your marketing funding.
BTW, one of the latest versions has animated Neil Armstrong's arse on one of the dial sections lol.
Excellent analysis of Omega and its problems.
Interesting views but from a rather biased perspective, I actually think that Omega are doing very well at the moment, they are certainly benefitting from the lack of Rolex's in the marketplace, their watches are as good if not better than Rolex at the moment but Omega cannot match the pull of that name - 'Rolex', it's the brand that people want and until tastes change it will continue to be so.
It's so hard to fuck up that royally, but hats off to Omega, they outdid themselves this time. Incredible.
Great rant, a rant that made sense !!
Great video! I laughed when the 321 Speedie came out as platinum. What a joke. Who the hell spends that kind of money on an Omega? Might as well go Lange or Patek.
Yup! 321 with stainlesss steel with plexiglass!!! Sign me up....
You really nailed it here. Exactly what I was thinking .. Thanks for publishing
You are a genius. I was pining for a Speedmaster for years, I saw the ads for the moon landing anniversary and broke. Saw the price of the new one. Bought a second-hand Professional with the hesalite. If they had done what you suggest I would have bought the 321.
I love watching this guy. Despite owning both an Omega and a Rolex, a part of me is rooting for Omega - as it was my first love.
So true your comments, l haven't yet purchased my first Omega and as a child off the 50"s watched the TV when the moon landings happened and therefore have had an interest in getting this watch.
I will be retiring soon after 45 years of working and this watch will be my reward to myself for my hard work.
The 321 Omega 're issue in steel and hesalite with no display case would be a no brainer purchase but until then l am going wait this one out.
Excellent rant video by the way !
Spot on! Just subscribed. Keep up the great, straight, no nonsense delivery...
I would have bought a 321 with an original “style” bracelet for $10k. People would pay Rolex sports watch prices for it.
KISS - Keep It Simple & Strong... the Gold 50 years Apollo 11 Speedmaster was spot ont but who ever came up with Aldrin's butt on a Speedmaster subdial ??? Omega team lost a great opportunity to bring out a superb 321 SS Speedmaster chronograph !
Then again... de gustibus non est disputandum... Maybe for 50 years Apollo 13 ?
Great video......wonderful insight. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Best video yet. Im sending this to Raynald,
He needs to hear it
Excellent analysis, really enjoyed hearing this
Well said, I was so hoping they would do that, to give me a slim chance of owning such an icon, but alas no! I wonder if we will ever get our wish?
People are in the waiting line for your next great analysis.
Oisin... This video alone is why I am now a huge fan of your channel. Absolutely brilliant!
Good discussion video.
I know it’s in a different league and quartz is a swear word, but Bulova did an interesting thing with their ‘moon watch’. Dave Scott, commander of Apollo 15, wore his personal Bulova on his third EVA after the hesalite crystal of his Omega apparently popped off. As you said in your video, you can’t have a watch that’s been to the moon, but it’s not because the astronauts have them, it’s because they’re government property. But Dave Scott owned his Bulova and in 2015 auctioned it off and got $1.65 million for it. Bulova, realising they had marketing gold on their hands, brought out a (somewhat inflated) homage to the watch. Unfortunately it’s quartz, but a highly accurate quartz (10 seconds a year) and it’s actually quite a nice watch, and around £400. My point is, as you’ve made clear, they saw an opportunity and made the most of a nice story. Omega have totally dropped the ball with this one. Great channel btw!
The Ed White Edition, not the one that went to the moon, but first one in space. They sort of did what you proposed
You are the man...., thats the way i like! 🤘
so true moon watch best looking watch also the feel of the thing in your hands ,love vintage chronos ,tissot, heuer, omega, ,think this carbon ,ceramic is killing watches now they will never age , old navatimers also cool ,omega need you on board your so right , omega have 2 special models ,seamaster, speedmaster watches for men , enjoyed your show first time watcher, will sub , a,t,b you yours stevie
Very true, a missed opportunity! Great vid!
This is one of your best videos!! Holy shit.
I have been fence sitting on omega.. I would have waited in line for an original 100%. Daaaym what an analysis. Bravo.
Great analysis (I like the comparison with the restaurant menu), no need of Georges Clooney. We want the steel 321!!! By the way the Moonwatch looks better with the hesalite glass, lovely distortions, that the sapphire glass doesn't have.(t is like comparing the tritium indices with the luminova indices).
Yes i did a full thing on one of my other vids about the hesalite and it's lovely strangeness. Thanks for watching!
Great vid. So very accurate.
It is 9/15/2020 I have just discovered this channel and I love it . How the F*** did I miss this , I’m a watch crazy person lol .. great vid on to the next one , see you in 2020 ...
Well Said.
I laughed so many times. Especially the end. I hate that too!! My favorite new channel. Thank you.
Some very good points
Replacing the current movement with the original is a horrible idea for several reasons: 1) it would significantly devalue the millions of 1861s. 2)It raises the question why Omega was calling the current models "moon watches" when they don't have the original movement. 3) Not enough people give a shit about the 321 movement and would prefer the cheaper 1861. It's just a few watch nerds online that obsess over such things. Your CD analogy fails because it was new technology causing people to buy the same album twice, not the artists themselves.
Finally, you believe people want the original movement because it is the one used on the moon...yet criticize them for using the original plexiglass over the newer sapphire?
And no, I don't own an Omega and probably never will
Spot on, love the Omeeega watches. However, I don't ever see a need to buy one at list price, they will always be discounted especially on the secondary market.
Frankly, there are so many Speedmaster variants it's hard to even decide which one to buy. A confused mind does nothing. Buy a Rolex in steel, at least it will most likely go up.
Why do you buy something you love and thinking of selling it at the same time?
With that in mind , you should not buy a watch in the first place.
@@Mega-zi7ys Some people are addicts of buying the cool new watch they want, but then they sell it because they aren't actually interested in wearing it.
@@ivanlagrossemoule
Makes sense agreed..but they should keep in mind watches should be bought only using disposable income.. money that won't affect your finances should it turn out to be a lemon etc.
Hence , the thinking of buying watches Bec price might go up should be the last thing on anybody's mind.
Great analysis. I personally believe Omega is so hesitant to release an authentic Moonwatch with the 321 because it's one of the last cards they have to play. Once they release that watch, they have to rely upon new innovations to drive the future of their company, rather than always looking to their past
Orry Young thats interesting. Thanks for your input.
Aye but if there was ever a time to play it, it was on the 50th anniversary, surely?
I love the gold 50th anniversary model. At 1034 pieces that is pretty limited by Omega standards? It was certainly difficult to buy and prices have held up well. I'm sure the platinum c.321 will also be very hard to get in the short term. And I've just picked up a beautiful 145.012-67 with an original c.321 movement for around $9k not $20k.
Terrific insight from someone without gray hair. I’ve subscribed
Agreed and funny video too. Omega should hire you as a marketing consultant.
it's intricate how watches aren't just watches, and very well explained. It's buying into a myth. We want to be lied to, that's the thing.
Fantastic review. I was only discussing this very topic in my local vintage AD at the weekend. I was looking to flip my 3573.50 for a 145.022-71 861 cal . However, this guy is very knowledgeable and has good sources within Swatch group and feels very confident that next year the steel 321 is in its way . He told me to hold tight, even though I was ready to drop another £ 2500 on top for the 861 ! Here’s hoping it comes off! Keep the great reviews coming they’re very good and refreshing 👍
Thanks for that. Interesting that they’re planning to finally release it in steel. And of course, no 50th anniversary wave to ride this time. What the hell are they doing?
Great episode brilliant subject excellent!!
Spot on video.321is the reason I am yet to pull the trigger on the speedmaster moon watch.
Great analysis as always 👍
I like your talking points, keep it up!
They will have another chance at the 75th Anniversary of the moon landing.
Quite simply well said
You hit the nail on the head! Omega really missed the boat ...! I owned four Omegas, back in the 60’s, oddly never a Moonwatch! Holding on to the ‘69 Seamaster Cosmic as the last one my dad got me.
FYI the 50th Anniversary Moonwatch with the 321 is Platinum, not white gold.
I have to disagree about Speedy owners going out and buying a 321. You might not be, but in general Omega buyers are very price conscious and savvy. They know that Omega will overproduce like crazy and they will be able to pick one up at 15% discount from an AD after the hype dies down. Most Omega owners/collectors who care about/want a 321 already own a real vintage one.
My prediction for next year? Omega will reintroduce the 321 into the Speedmaster line. They will call it something like 'Speedmaster Moonwatch Legacy' and supply it with a massive box in the shape of the Lunar Module.
I just found you on the Tube mate. Love the content. Thanks for doing these vids. Cheers.
Thanks for you great videos! Looking forwards to see new vids!!
Thanks Gerhard!!!
On the planet where I live, I can change the battery when the watch "dies", so basically my $50 CASIO Illuminator can "live" forever. In fact, I haven't changed the battery since 2011. I say that's pretty amazing technology!
great insight 👌
That Speedmaster ! Nice Man.
Just subscribed. I agree with everything you said, particularly about the like and subscribe thing. You know me too well.
Another stellar video!! Funny how Omega has to put that this new watch has 18K white gold indexes and hands, don't all Rolex watches have white gold hands and markers? Anyway a platinum Speedmaster does nothing for me even if it sports the 321, your right just give me the hesalite with the solid moonwatch caseback model and I"m good to go!
Spot on! At the risk of repeating the sentiment in the previous post, Omega should employ you as a brand consultant! I love a good rant too by the way.😎 You have now also said ‘like and subscribe’ twice! 😂😂😂😂😂
Lots of (accurate) thought in this one. I would've volunteered to be the "regular guy" holding the 321 Moon watch. Great video...I liked and subscribed. ☺️
Completely agree. A huge missed opportunity.
Sorry Irish Guy, just found this, gotta say, well said. I agree 100%, maybe Omega should hire you on an interim basis, you make a lot of sense.
I have a question. Should I have a Speedmaster Moonwatch on my collection? I have a couple of Rolexes but I was looking for a low profile watch to use on daily basis.
your spin makes a lot of sense. nice job TTWC. ~ JDS/CT
I think the thing is that Omega think about their existing customers, if they had done this then everyone with a 1861 speedy would have been a bit upset that they were now not worth as much as they were before. In other words they would have devalued the existing speedmaster.
Don’t feel bad about Omega. I believe they have a strategy and their steel 321 out now will be a slow and steady uptake before more people realize this is truly something they should have collected. Momentum to build overtime with possibly bringing Daytona fans to the Dark Side of the Moon :)
Well done TWC! Maybe Omega can execute on your idea (a very pragmatic and business savvy one at that) for their 75th anniversary edition? Perhaps spending another 25yrs in the shadow of Rolex will be enough time for them to reflect on the massive opportunity that has passed them by...
….and then they made the “Ed White”🙃
Totally agreed with your view, omega miss the boat..
Your video is spot on as usual
completely agree
Agree!
I have the first Omega in space as I don’t believe they landed on the moon!!😂😂 Great video, love the channel👍
Those fools from Bienne got to see this
Good one mate
You sir are a hero ! You should be CEO indeed ! Brilliant 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I don't see Omega struggling? Where is that coming from? They have been a solid no.2 for quite some time.
Your video is spot on though. They blew it with the Speedy 321. As they always do.
Rolex is the best at marketing. And with their lineup. They keep it simple, don't change up their styles much. If its not broke, why fix it?
Rolex pieces are iconic for this reason, along with their marketing. Buying Rolex at a premium, isn't very smart. Its a mass produced watch, same as Omega.
Omega quality wise is equal to Rolex, but their movements are superior in my opinion. The amagnetic Co-Ax? Yet, you never hear about it? Omegas marketing is horrible.
$60000 for a platinum Speedy is stupid. As is Omegas limited editions and endless models. They need to quit changing styles and models repeatedly. The Speedmaster MOM is iconic because it remains mostly unchanged.
Great video. Just subscribed. 👍
Omega rejected George Daniels' coax escapement until his patent ran out, and then adopted it was their own invention. That might work in other industries, but not in the mechanical watch industry that is mired in tradition. Omega: 2nd tier for life.
JTMarlin8. Not so. They bought the patent off of Daniels for next to nothing. He wanted his invention to be worn by the masses and spent half his life trying to do so. Omega sent him a bunch of e'baunches for his workshop to develop the prototype. They worked together on it until Omega gave him the cold shoulder. After some time, Omega realized they couldn't do it without Daniels and brought him back as director on the project. He was at Basel with Omega to introduce it. This is all in the book" all in good time" by Daniels.
ua-cam.com/video/rSzaViIzOm0/v-deo.html
Patek tried to steal his work. Not Omega.

@@chelious1973 Good info. Thanks for the clarification!
JTMarlin8. NP. Check out the book. Danels lived a interesting life. The co-axial escapement sparked a resurgence in innovation in horology. Rolexes new synergy escapement is very impressive as well. Win for everyone. 👍
I'd definitely have one of those, that would be very cool
Good points
A decent quartz watch will run for decades with just battery changes and no other maintenance. Same can't be said with any mechanical watch that will definitely need regular costly servicing and the parts may not be available in the future.
Great analogy with records/cds - and now people are buying records again!
Most people dont know the difference between a speedmaster automatic and a wind up model. Only collectors would have bought the 321. I agree that they lost a huge oppurtunity .
I agree, Omega dropped the ball. Omega makes a gold expensive anniversary model? Really?
Great vlog
I’m exactly the same, as soon as someone says “don’t forget to like and subscribe, and hit the bell” (especially at the very beginning of a video) I switch it off 😂
Too true!
Nailed it. Nuff said.
