I’ve unsubscribed from almost every other watch channel because your no BS content and industry/business insights are so unique and interesting. Keep up the great work!
As an owner of several Rolex models and watches by, among others, JLC, Glashütte, Omega and Lange, I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Your presentation of great Rolex alternatives was spot on. Thank you!
Fab video as always! I thought I'd have a bit of fun and pull together a more affordable alternatives list. Get 99% of the watch for a fraction of the price. 1. OP: Seiko 5 SNXS $100 2. Submariner: Citizen NY0040 as used by the Italian navy $150 3. Yachtmaster: Seiko 5KX SRPE74K1 - embossed Gothic numerals on a gold PVD bezel. As tasteful as the original. $300 4. Explorer II: JDM Seiko SBSC009 GMT. One of very few watches that captures the white, orange and steel look while not being a carbon copy. $500 5. Explorer: Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical $500. Or any other black dial field watch. (yawn, imo) 6. 1908: Glycine Moonphase GL0385 $400 or rose gold PVD Seiko Cocktail Time Bellini $300. 7. Sea Dweller: Invicta Grand Diver in gold PVD. A chunk without spending a chunk of change. $200 8. GMT Master: Seiko 5 Sports ‘Blueberry’ GMT SSK003K1 if you want the look. Or if you want the watch that beat the GMT Master to market in 1953, the Glycine Airman. $400-600 9. Daytona: Tissot PRS516 or Hamilton Intra-matic $1500 10. Datejust: Tissot Bridgeport T0454071103300. Coin edge bezel, romans and fancy lance hands. More Bregeut Classique vibes but ewually eye-catching.
also to show people can’t tell the difference everyone thought Patrick Bateman in american psycho was wearing a gold rolex for years until someone realised it was a seiko 5
I really like your videos. Calm, on the point and very intelligent insights. I learned a lot. Thanks a lot for all the efforts and thoughts you have put in your content.
I doubt anyone cares, but ive wanted the bluesy since I was 14 years old (20 years ago), and after waiting since putting my name in the ring since September 2020, I finally got the call today. Literally. A moment which should bring absolute joy was one of hesitation and worry. $16k for something that was 14 only a few years ago, and a brand pushing away normal people like myself through the actions of their AD. I thought I would be excited, but now im sweating about it financially and im more impressed by its modern competitors. I dont know what to do, but at least I can say itll hold 100% value for the next 3 years atleast.
Get it and enjoy it. I had had the same thing happen. I have owned multiple brands from Rolex, Omega, Lange, Cartier. Now I own 2 Tags and 2 Grand Seikos.
@@BrandonCRFC We do cares. I would say, sure it's a lot of money, sure it could be still in value or up in value, even down maybe. But one thing sure, if you are not confortable about the money you put on it, don't do it, I've never ever buy for investment, I've given up on a lot of grail and opportunities because AD was unpleasant or brand rise price to the moon (hello JLC). If feel uncomfortable, potentially unhappy, sleep on it and if there no change, pass. Take care 😉
Almost nothing really grabs me about Rolex. the skydweller is the first cool complication i've seen on a rolex. (i'm not sure how elevated their chronos are.) To be fair, most makers aren't really doing much in the way of complications, there's the whole moonphase perpetual calendar side, the chrono spectrum, and then wild stuff like repeaters that might as well not exist, since they're almost always limited, or just really expensive, since they're among the most difficult. And not useless, vision impaired and people on watch who need night vision and timekeeping, plus anyone who doesn't want to wake themselves up completely in the middle of the night with their phone.
who cares at this point, price gouging and greedyness can get you this far. I got a cartier santos for half the price of a datejuat jubilee. Could never be happier
BTW, he did not really mention to much about the yacht master 2, just that it is discontinued. I have the all ss model and wear her mostly every day. Many compliments received on her. Rolly should have kept her in the line It's such a oddball watch, that it makes really cool, and with that 10 min countdown, you when to flip your steaks when set. Many uses besides a regatta race it was intended for!😂❤❤
This is the most accurate “alternative to Rolex” video I have seen. And there have been many in other channels. Price points and finishing comparisons are on point. These are watch collector watches, for real.
I'm pleased to see the Omega Railmaster getting some love! My Railmaster (the 2003 re-release with the first iteration of the co-axial movement) has been my daily driver for years.
@@DanielDahl-i9p I respectfully disagree. I also own a Deepsea Sea Dweller and the GO is more finely finished than the Rolex. It's more akin to a Fifty Fathoms. At $10K it's not in Patek or A. Lange's league but on wrist it exudes sheer class.
Thank you for this! It shows just how interesting the watch market is. I can hear Rolex fan boys shouting, “yeah, but the (insert watch) loses 30% of its value when you walk out of the shop!” Ugh. If everything is an investment, why buy most things?
It’s because when you have been watch collecting for a while, you realize the mantra is true - quickest way to lose interest in a watch is to buy it. It’s much better make money when you get bored than lose it. Hence, most serious collectors end up at Rolex. I have a black dial Explorer 2 right now, took 2 years to get from AD, love it, and if I ever need can easily cash in for a slight profit, or trade up to a higher end watch. Rolex levels you up, put your name down for a model you like, you won’t regret it. One day I’d like to get to a Day Date, Royal Oak or Overseas. Moving up the Rolex chain will get you there, these other watches will slow you down.
@@mkyhou1160 sorry, this is not true. TRUE watch collectors, do their homework and only buy a watch when they’re confident they’ll be happy with it forever. They aren’t ‘getting bored’ with a watch and selling it in 6 months or a few years. And if they do sell a watch they aren’t worried about depreciation because they bought the watch, wore it, and enjoyed it. As eggsll correctly pointed, consumer products were never meant to be for profit.
@@WestCoastAce27disageee - this is what people think is going to happen - they research a watch, are sure it will be perfect and for life, then it doesn’t work out that way. If it did, there wouldn’t be a watch market, we would all just buy one or two and be happy for life. Very naive and inexperienced view.
@@mkyhou1160 I think you’ve hit on something that I don’t think quite addresses the point that @WestCoastAce27 was making. Yes, aesthetics change and jewelry aesthetics change as well. So, yes, there is a sense that you may not stay in love with the aesthetics of a watch. If I understand the point that WestCoast was making is that one can understand their aesthetic sensibility well enough to build a watch collection that is timeless and will not require flipping. My point is that the nature of watches, like any jewelry, the enjoyment is in the wearing. If you wear a watch, you’re going to get scuffs and damage to the watch, which lessens the value on the second-hand market. It makes more sense to me to buy pieces that fit one’s aesthetic and not think about the resale value because you’ll never get what you think it’s worth to you.
But at least for the other rediculous expensive watches you don't need to jump through hoops for the favour of being allowed to buy a watch from them and then wait for the call.
If someone was in the market for a Rolex to begin with but doesn’t want to put up with the headache, they’re probably not looking at the more affordable watches. He’s also made plenty of videos about much more affordable watches
Agreed such underrated and good quality watches with a very long pedigree. Swatch may have saved the likes of Tissot, Certina and many others but in the case of Certina they never really regained their past glory, they were once revered dive watches. And many of the brands under swatch lost their movement independence, now the powermatic 80 seems to adorn so many swatch brands🤦🏼
Nice video, thank you The one advantage of Rolex which perhaps isn’t discussed enough is this: -they have such critical mass and volume that i know if i leave my family a watch after i die, i know they can just get it serviced and wear it for another 80years Omega…not quite the same Patek- maybe as good but i can’t afford one and probably wouldn’t even i could Summary: Rolex has the best family heirloom safety which is a surprisingly big factor for me ( i’m 40 btw)
@@dannysimenauer5745 "Our Numbers are growing." Do grown men really think this way about watches? Watches. really? Like you are some resistance movement? Liberating the world from the nazis, err I mean Rolex. Does that make Roger Federer a collaborator? Carlos Alcarez, Coco Gauff. String them up!
Bro - every time I watch one of your videos, the algorithm hits me with Bentley Continental GT commercials... as if your superior content delivery and understated elegance doesn't already make me feel like royalty... 😅😅
Love this video. Really well overthought alternatives. I just sold my Sub and bought the JLC Master Control Chrono Callander. Just a bit more expensive but so much more and way better finishing. It feels more that it’s MY watch. Were the sub is way more recognisable for people to judge you by. Great job 👍🏼
Great stuff again. Some interesting choices too. Coincidentally I was just in a Rolex AD yesterday to "register my interest" in the Explorer. Something I've always wanted and just needed to get the wife's approval. She was like wait, I thought you were getting it, then I had to sit her down and have the talk. I explained to her all i'm doing is hoping they call me before the undertaker does. She was so confused. Either way, they were actually very nice, way better than I expected. The gentleman was older and we just started talking watches. it was an hour before closing and the other people were very helpful as well. I wasn't even dressed nice so I thought I was going to get the cold shoulder. So my name is on the list....we'll see where that gets me.
LOL I’m imagining you explaining this whole mess to your wife. BTW I “registered my interest” for a DateJust almost 3 months ago. The salesperson was cool and told me he loves watch enthusiasts. Maybe that is a good sign but no call yet, LOL.
I've been doing the whole internet stalker thing and trying to find out about your background (without much luck). Your knowledge about marketing, branding and design is outstanding. You seem to have an ability to spot patterns that other people can't consciously see. It's incredible. If I win the lottery I'm going to hire you as my marketing guy!
Lol... For now I've managed to stay relatively anonymous but I have revealed in a video that I'm not a marketing guy myself but have spent some time in consulting and in the C-suite. So I've learned to pay attention when the marketing guy and the product guy speaks 😀
I've twice had the chance to buy a Rolex and opted for Grand Seiko both times. I'll never regret it. I also believe Monta's entire collection is a very worthy alternative to Rolex at much lower prices.
Super interesting video. I like the way you presented options, some of which I would never think about. Likewise I like Rolex a lot, but they have become so hard to get, and I could not agree more with their customer aloofness. I would love an Explorer II, but again hard to find. For now I have the ultra affordable “alternative”, the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT. Not quite a Rolex level watch, but a nice watch nonetheless. Keep up the good work!
@@halfsourlizard9319 A submariner is a person in a submarine. Woozertoo is purely talking about the nickname for the Yachtmaster and not the watch itself. And technically speaking, a modern day submarine is a ship even though their original incarnations would have been called boats. The belief that it's an oxymoron is thinking that boats only float on the surface.
A couple of years ago, I tried to buy a Rolex through an AD. I was just getting into watches. I never got one. I'm glad I didn't now. There is so much more out there.
The ultimate watch: Casio F91W! Rock up at the most exclusive spot in Monaco wearing one. Pick a black one so it complements your luxury designer suit. That would be so cool 😎
Many excellent points. As it happens, I'm about to purchase an Explorer and have looked long and hard for alternatives. Unfortunately, I've come up short. The Railmaster with its brushed dial is not my cup of tea, and it's also larger. Omega made a much more refined limited edition as part of their 1957 trilogy but it is unavailable now new in the box. The Aqua Terra is a great watch but those shark's teeth and its size not what I'm looking for. In 36mm, the Explorer really does occupy a unique position. All the best.
I have a Black Bay 36 (79500), which is pretty comparable. I was just in an AD this morning, and compared them head-to-head. The Explorer is certainly nicer, in terms of finishing and construction, but they’re honestly pretty similar. I prefer the BB36’s bracelet and clasp.
@@drevyek1785 Yes, I should have mentioned the BB36. It is surely the closest to the Explorer. I went into the AD to have a look, the same place I'm on the waitlist for the Explorer, and the salesperson thought I'd always wish I'd gotten the Explorer, so I passed on it. In fact, he told me to buy the Explorer from Chrono24 or Ebay now as I was unlikely get one from him anytime soon. And that's what I did just a few moments ago. I appreciated his candor but won't likely buy anything else from this AD again. I'd purchased a Rolex for my wife and a Black Bay Pro from him but that didn't matter, apparently. All the best.
@@oscarleedefur Interesting. I'm too busy counting watches to keep track of sportsball, but I was under the impression that Michael Jordan was an exceptional athlete - is that not the case?
@@Amplitudeproblem I am sorry but disagree. I have noticed Rolex being better quality than others in the price range they sell and for me that's the main thing. Thier marketing and popularity is a bonus.
@@rajanibadri521 I've enjoyed mine; they're good watches for what they're aiming for, just not top in class for what I value. Still, fun to wear. Enjoy yours as well!
I absolutely love your reviews… I learn so much… I especially like the fact that you appreciate the Rolex, but you don’t fawn over them. There are wonderful alternatives. I especially appreciate my Seamaster and my Tudors… anyway… Thank You Steven✌🏾
Excellent summary from an obviously very knowledgeable watch aficionado…. I had about twelve “serious” watches (£3,000+ each I mean) until recently….too much money tied up in watches that weren’t being worn. I’m down to four now; Rolex Sea Dweller James Cameron, Zenith Pilot Chronograph Annnual Calendar, Girard Perregaux Laureato Chronograph and Panerai Luminor. Four is still too many…. I want to keep the Girard Perregaux (gift from the missus) and swap the rest for a rose gold on Oysterflex Sky-Dweller….
Because the Rolex AD experience is so poor after the Pandemic, I opened up to alternative brands that appealed to me. I am a dial man first. I discovered so many brands that are affordable , available, and want to sell to me as a first time customer. I cannot say anything bad about Rolex, just wish they follow the AP boutique model and dump their chain AD’s as they roll out more Bucherer boutiques. And before the haters try to shoutdown my comments, the only shortage of Rolex today is at the AD. The gray market is fully stocked!
The grey market has always been fully stocked. At any point in time, during the height of the hype cycle, there has not been a single Rolex model you could not get delivered on your doorstep in two days time, assuming you were willing to pay a grey dealer.
That note about when you made your last watch purchase is hilarious. It’s like those signs that tout how many days since the last incident. Great video again.
That's a tough one. There are ball watches but I don't think they can really compete. I think a polaris memovox kind of conceptually works. A globemaster also has a certain something with the same toolish vibe and distinctive dial (but different) but none with the signature glass and lightning hand 😀
Even though some of the alternatives are almost as expensive as the Rolex counterparts, I can appreciate the options. Love the Omegas considered here and the Nomos'.
I agree with most of your choices, but as far as an alternative to the Daytona goes: I think both the Zenith Chronomaster Original as well as the Tag Heuer Carrera Glassbox are superior to the Speedmaster, as that one in and of itself is just too ubiquitous…
I love the explorer 2 but didn't want to buy another rolex because of the image problem. My version of this is SBGM245, the spring drive is a different (and better) watch. For the explorer 1, it's the SBGX061 which looks-wise is the better comparison (although watch-wise it's a quartz).
I disagree about the Grand Seiko Sport GMTs. The largest of them are pretty similar in dimensions to the Aqua Terra Worldtimer but also have curved lugs which sit well on the wrist. I have the blue hi-beat SBGJ237 and it has fantastic wrist presence imo and the closed caseback keeps the thickness at a reasonable level and suits a sportier watch. The dial depth and lumed sapphire bezel are spectacular in person and the bracelet is perfectly fine even if it's not class leading. Could it be a tad smaller? Sure, but I don't think it should be dismissed as being too bulky, particularly in comparison to the Omega alternative presented. The 24 hour chapter ring also adds extra functionality.
The perfect alternative to the sky dweller is the omega constellation annual calendar. Doesn’t have a GMT but it has a jumping hour hand for quick time zone change
I would say another great alternative to the rose gold yatchmaster is the newer GO SeaQ 39.5mm in rose gold on a rubber strap and has a display caseback. As the owner of a steel yatchmaster myself I think the GO is just better as a gold alternative. And as a 1908 alternative look for some old Moser Mayu (the small seconds endeavor). Yes they are hand wind but have far more interesting dials, amazing movement, and in most cases cost HALF of the 1908 asking prices. I actually got my platinum Mayu for less than 1/3 of the cost of what Rolex is asking for the platinum 1908.
Rolex is the only brand that is famous among those people who do not know anything about watches, which is why it is sought after by all those people who are *not rich or wealthy* but who want to *make people believe* that they are rich or wealthy. For the same price, Omega offers mechanically superior watches. Those who buy an Omega do so because they are so wealthy that they don't care about people's opinions or the future value of the watch, and especially they don't need a watch to show off to prove their wealth because its already clear. Remember that Silvio Berlusconi *never* had a Rolex, but he gifted them to his subordinate employees, while he wore Cartier. Indeed, Rolex is extremely famous in the world for being the favorite watch of used car salesmen. That's it, if you don't drive an Aston Martin nor a Maserati and you bought an Explorer or a DJ or a Submariner everyone will think its fake. If its not fake, that's even worse, because everyone will think you have a huge complex about your lack of real money that you need to compensate by showing off a wealth you don't have. Never forget that today many dealers sell Rolex on a monthly mortgage (this makes me laugh and being sad at the same time).
Another great video. I just picked up the two tone gmt 126713GRNR - never thought I would buy two tone, but I do think this watch looks unique and it wears fantastic.
So many great recommendations here. I've tried on a SeaQ and it's a proper stunner. Comparing an IWC Mark to the Explorer I is also a great idea. They made a 36mm version of the Mark XVIII. My favourite is the 38mm Mark XV, which is a luxury tool watch of similar size to the 36mm Oyster case. A timeless design just like the 14270, but with a printed dial which I think a tool watch should have. These can still be found for half the price of an 114270, although they've been rising rapidly in recent years.
Thank you for this… probably the most original take of this type of video I’ve seen in years! Your attention to detail, that star lights on the ceiling of the car… spot on! Too many watch homage type videos but you’ve taken it to that deeper level, the intention, the statement, great alternatives !! Am a Rolex fanboy, but have added a few more to my wish list from this. ‘I have arrived a long time ago….’
Thank You… I have a Glashütte Original Pano Sea Q in Rosé Gold and steel, it’s a beautiful watch, supremely well made. I wear it more that my datejust 41.. I also agree with you about Vacheron, we had a tremendous experience in London at the boutique. The colleagues were Kind, generous on time, and looking to sell watches!
Thank you very much for the excellent video! In my opinion, the problem is that Rolex watches are now traded like a currency on a stock exchange. This no longer has anything to do with being a watch connoisseur. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see when Rolex stops or at least reduces the waiting list game. People who can easily afford an expensive watch do no longer wait years for a Rolex, but buy what they like. It is precisely this target group that Rolex is now losing. In my opinion, a brand like Rolex also has to be careful that it does not degenerate into a brand for “consumer fools”. And let's be honest: in some circles, it has always been frowned upon to wear a Rolex and this thinking is now reaching other circles.
Over 30% of the market. No other brand even remotely comes close. I think they know what they’re doing. I bet if they could all the other big luxury brands would live to be in the position of Rolex.
Superb recommendations... I like how you aren't suggesting "moving down" on watches of quality, but also highlighting some perfect watches of quality. I own several of your "alternative watches" and the value is solid. And from this review... Glashutte is on my high list for what is next.
I highly appreciate the insights and do share most of your views. For some, you have shown other substitutes. I got a two tone sub to scratch the Rolex itch and to own a ‘bling’ watch.
I would take a Rolex (and I do with my GMT) over any watch at any time for any price. I have my reasons but my Patek 5296R was the only other watch I liked - but I love my Rolex.
I love my explorer, with that said I am getting tired of waiting for my grail watch a GMT M.II Blk/blue and have been looking closely at Glashutte Original. With that said, what I recently discovered, much to my surprise, is that Glashutte’s warranty is only 2 years and they recommend servicing every 3-5 years. I’m sure you can stretch that, however both the warranty and recommended servicing is a fraction of Rolex, Omega and other well known brands. Curious what your take is on this?
2 year warranty doesn’t give you confidence long term for a glashutte in my book! Offer the same 5 year warranty and I’ll open my wallet! Until then I’ll keep my 116600 Boring but reliable Rolex sd😂
It's a fair point. Warrantee is a competitive advantage and offering 5 or 10 years is preferable to two. However. Legally it's the first two years that matter (at least in the EU and switzerland) because that's where the law protects you. IT's very clear (ie in the first 6 months after purchase, any defect is automatically assumed to be at the fault of the manufacturer). After two years you'll always be subject to the brands interpretation of their own limited warranty. Rolex are not the biggest sticklers, but try using your IWC warranty and they're going to charge you if they see a scratch on the bezel because of "improper use". Lange are also notoriously nitpicky about how you treat your watch and willed void your warranty just for sh¤%s and giggles... What I care a lot about is the stated service interval. To me it speaks to reliability. Anything at 4-5 years and above is good. Cheers 😀
Very nice alternatives. I am waiting for the Omega World Timer in titanium presently. I wanted a GMT (the new Black/Grey or All Black) but I'll see if I feel the same when the Omega arrives. There is no doubt I'd buy the Calatrava before the 1908, I'd buy an early Roger Dubuis Homage model with the guilloche´ dial before either.
I have Rolex watches and love them all ....but I found myself nodding in agreement to your excellent post.....it's incredible how people are influenced by the image....!
Don't forget the Invicta ProDiver as a Submariner alternative 😂 Seriously though, for those of us that can't afford these pieces, the ProDiver is arguably the best way to get that Submariner look without having to take out a car loan to buy a watch lol
I have a 39mm Steinhart GMT Ocean 1, purchased in 2007. Simply put, a near perfect 300m WR diver. Worn daily, it remains in pristine condition and I continue to feel proud wearing it! Cape Town🇿🇦
Absolutely wonderful take on the big "R"'s alternatives. I have always been a fan of the brand and have owned over 20 steel sports models in my 60 plus years, that being said, I have felt that Rolex has abandoned me as a loyal customer who just wants a really good watch to be available to me, when I want it, without playing their stupid A.D. games. So, I divested myself of my Rolex's and have enjoyed discovering the likes of BlancPain, JLC, IWC, Omega, Glashutte, and Grand Seiko. To be perfectly honest, I really don't miss wearing Rolex and enjoy the variety of my new collection.
I recently bought my first Rolex - an Explorer. I set the time using the GMT site one week ago - and check again today. It gained 10 seconds. Are there cheaper mechanical watches just as good or better?
LOVE THIS. Spot on dialog. I do not know which watch I will buy yet but (I am to cheap) but I do like the other video you did of $1500 to $4000 watches. That maybe where I end up.
I really love your videos! Pls. more of them! And yes, I 100% agree on your alternatives, despite I dont like Grand Seiko as much as you do! I also quit with Rolex and sold all my Rolex watches. So now I am free for all the other marvels out there!
I agree that the IWC Mark XX or earlier variants are an excellent alternative to the Explorer. If you want to spend less money, how about a Tudor Ranger? Want to spend money, how about a JLC Polaris? I agree on the GMT - Grand Seiko every time for me. If I ever win the lottery I’ll maybe get a VC Overseas Dual Time
Great choices. I’d add the Christopher Ward C63 GMT white dial as an Explorer II replacement. Save $8k. We can agree to disagree on your last pt about Rolex potentially going all precious metal. If they do it will blow up in their face spectacularly. Business schools will be studying it for decades.
To the previous replies, the word "alternative" does not mean "as good as". The CW C63 Sealander GMT is a similar watch with similar aesthetic. It IS an alternative. I bought one when I had the choice to own either. I own or have owned Rolex, Tudor, Omega, Breitling, JLC and others. The CW is pretty darn good. Next to my friend's Rolex Explorer 2 I can tell that I absolutely made the right choice.
great selection of alternatives Mike, and I for one are always baffled by peoples blinkered choice. I have friends that will not look at anything other than a Rolex, but then they are not into watches, and know nothing about these options you've chosen. And I think that is the point, most Rolex sales are for that person who is only going to buy one watch that everyone knows, and will recover most of or more than the initial purchase cost if they need some cash.
How much fun was this video? I had a blast! Just so happens that the GO and Nomos you mentioned are on my list...Spirit Zulu too. It's fun to know that I can enjoy this new hobby as a not-as-wealthy sort.
Another great video, I stumbled upon your videos just recently and I must say I’m enjoying them immensely. I have been collecting watches for the better part of 40 years and I have a very eclectic collection, I bought my Submariner (16610, series K)😅 back in the late 90’s and I still wear it with pride, I have a number of Omegas, Breitling Chrono Evolution, Zenith Open Heart, Glashutte seventies, Panerai 1312 and a whole host of other watches I enjoy. I like the fact that you showcase everything from inexpensive grail watches right the way through the ridiculously priced grail ones too, haters be haters but I am enjoying the content.
Thanks for the feedback. Happy to hear you enjoy my videos. Sounds like you've quite an impressive collection. I have no 5 digit Rolexes... IT's on my list for some day 😀😀
I’ve never held one in my hand. But it’ll be a well built Swiss watch. They are on the pricier side though. And while the designs are ok, they’ve never spoken to me.
They’ve come a long way and now even have in house manufactured movements. Some of their chronograph model are really great looking watches other models don’t speak to me. Find them very pricey, not sure I’d spend that sort of money on that brand, also seem to lose loads of their value on the second hand market.
Not a big fan tbh. It's not my kind of aesthetic. I know historically they've had some acclaimed designs and they even win design awards on occasion but they are pricey for what you get (usually a Valjoux derivative movement). cheers 😀
I agree completely on the Explorer II. If there's any Rolex to go for, that's the one, even though there's definitely a few more affordable alternatives from Grand Seiko or even Christopher Ward.
I'd prefer some value alternatives vs same or more expensive alternatives. I'm learning as I age status pieces mean less to me. Glycine, Certina and CW are good enough for me.

I really like your videos. Calm, on the point and very intelligent insights. I learned a lot. Thanks a lot for all the efforts and thoughts you have put in your content.
Very very kind of you. Thank you so much for supporting my channel 😃😃😃
Glad you mentioned the Air King, I love mine, and I have never had anyone give a second glance, but it makes me smile every time I put it on.
Brain : "you don't need a Rolex"
Rolex : "but you want one"
Truer words were never spoken 😃
The day this was uploaded, Rolex increased their prices. Classic.
Wait, seriously?
Couple of more years before everyone sees them as the villain.
they increased them again on January, wtf?
Because they can like no other brand. They own over 30% of the market.
who cares at this point, price gouging and greedyness can get you this far. I got a cartier santos for half the price of a datejuat jubilee. Could never be happier
My feelings towards Rolex are the same as I have for my ex wives: warm but distant.
But then again: watches increase in value…
Or at least a Rolex does.
@@michaelriera6277Not a given
lol.... 😂😂
BTW, he did not really mention to much about the yacht master 2, just that it is discontinued. I have the all ss model and wear her mostly every day. Many compliments received on her. Rolly should have kept her in the line
It's such a oddball watch, that it makes really cool, and with that 10 min countdown, you when to flip your steaks when set. Many uses besides a regatta race it was intended for!😂❤❤
This is the most accurate “alternative to Rolex” video I have seen. And there have been many in other channels. Price points and finishing comparisons are on point. These are watch collector watches, for real.
Glad you liked my suggestions 😀
My seiko alpinist is my springbok-supporting watch 😊
Also a good choice 😀Go bokke 😀😀
I'm pleased to see the Omega Railmaster getting some love! My Railmaster (the 2003 re-release with the first iteration of the co-axial movement) has been my daily driver for years.
Great shout out for GO. I have the smaller SeaQ and it just makes me smile. It's a great company that deserves community support.
Ive tried it on. It felt cheap
I agree. Love this watch. Great choice vs submariner.
The Glashutte SEAQ is absolutely beautiful.
SEAQ is way overpriced
Mike at his best: enjoyable, informative and useful.
Words my wife have never said... 😂😂😂
Thank you for synchronizing the images with the talking points.
Thank you for this! It shows just how interesting the watch market is. I can hear Rolex fan boys shouting, “yeah, but the (insert watch) loses 30% of its value when you walk out of the shop!”
Ugh.
@@mkyhou1160 those aren’t real watch lovers. And your sad insults shows you know your arguments are bogus.
I never comment, but I love your channel! Good work, brother!
You commented now. Thanks 😃😃😃
This video should be called: Replace this ridiculously expensive watches with these other ridiculously expensive watches."
But at least for the other rediculous expensive watches you don't need to jump through hoops for the favour of being allowed to buy a watch from them and then wait for the call.
r/rolex have Stockholm syndrome
This isn’t for people who want a cheaper Rolex, it’s for people who don’t want to deal with Rolex’s current games - but can still afford one.
If someone was in the market for a Rolex to begin with but doesn’t want to put up with the headache, they’re probably not looking at the more affordable watches. He’s also made plenty of videos about much more affordable watches
That make me chuckle
The GMT Master II you could also trade for the new JLC Polaris Geo
Good callout 😀
For only $800 you can have a gorgeous Certina DS Action diver with 300 m and looks just as good as the submariner. I love mine.
This could also be called "Best alternative AD to the Rolex AD".
lol 😂
Nice video, thank you
The one advantage of Rolex which perhaps isn’t discussed enough is this:
-they have such critical mass and volume that i know if i leave my family a watch after i die, i know they can just get it serviced and wear it for another 80years
Omega…not quite the same
Patek- maybe as good but i can’t afford one and probably wouldn’t even i could
Summary: Rolex has the best family heirloom safety which is a surprisingly big factor for me ( i’m 40 btw)
I'm growing more and more distant from Rolex. I have a feeling I'm not alone.
Nope. You are not alone. I was thinking of getting a Rolex. But I changed my mind. And go for another brand instead.
You are not. Our numbers are growing. You will find out we also guard our dignity and will not kiss CEO Dufour’s feet!
Rolex. Good movements. That's about the only nice thing I can say about them.
Lol.... I only get Kia adverts.... 😂😂
For the GMT I would add the Breitling chronomat 40mm. Great video. !
Right, lol
Super interesting video. I like the way you presented options, some of which I would never think about.
Likewise I like Rolex a lot, but they have become so hard to get, and I could not agree more with their customer aloofness.
I would love an Explorer II, but again hard to find. For now I have the ultra affordable “alternative”, the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT. Not quite a Rolex level watch, but a nice watch nonetheless.
Keep up the good work!
This vid is about alternatives ... not really about 'affordable' ones.
Like, that'd be a super fun vid too ... Especially now that there's cheap true-GMT movements.
Thanks - I'll consider an "affordable" version of the vid at some point 😀
The best alternative to a Submariner is a 5 digit Submariner… easily available, vintage class, and ultra comfortable. And no AD waitlist!
Literally by definition X can't be a non-trivial substitute for X.
14060 ftw 😀
Any not a Zenith defy or El primero for the Daytona?
El primero is definitely an option 😀
Excellent blog...I will still continue to buy Rolex...but there are so many alternatives and I will leverage some of them...thx for sharing your views
Fantastic video as usual... For the Daytona substitute: I was expecting a Zenith ... not that the Speedy is not a great choice.
Zenith would also be a fair option 😀😀
Agree with all your alternatives except the GMT. I wondered why I can't find a good alternatives till you pointed out why in your video.
Indeed, Mike, there are always alternate choices equal or better in everything, always.
Detailed vid. Thank you. Chris
A “Boat Submariner” somehow seems oxymoronic to me.
Isn’t that just a sunken ship?
It's a submariner-like watch meant to be worn on a boat ... not a boat watch meant to be worn when underwater.
Submarines are called boats by submariners
A couple of years ago, I tried to buy a Rolex through an AD. I was just getting into watches. I never got one. I'm glad I didn't now. There is so much more out there.
The ultimate watch: Casio F91W! Rock up at the most exclusive spot in Monaco wearing one. Pick a black one so it complements your luxury designer suit. That would be so cool 😎
Love how you worked Vacheron into this. Bravo.
Thank you very much
Best alternative to the Rolex sub, Blancpain FF was my choice.
Excellent video…you continue to deliver the most interesting and varied content. Great job 👏
Thank you sir, as always 😀😀
I have tried many watches (not yet PP and AP) thinking they are good alternatives, BUT when you put Rolex you will feel the quality !
What you're feeling is decades of marketing putting a softglow effect on a perfectly ordinary, decent mid-range watch. It works on me, too.

Thanks - Keep the GP for sure. Very cool watch 😃
Which non-Rolex watches did you buy?
@@eyeheartsushi2212 Grand Seiko Shunbun (spelling?) and Omega Globemaster.
@@dannysimenauer5745 Nice. I have a Tudor Black Bay, an Omega SMP 300 Diver, and a Breitling Superocean Heritage.
@@Chrissepisje I don't mind grey, I do mind paying above retail though.
That note about when you made your last watch purchase is hilarious. It’s like those signs that tout how many days since the last incident.
Great video again.
Thanks 😃😃😃😃❤️
I cannot believe how much our minds think alike. You nail it every time 💪🏼⌚️Mr Valjoux
humble thanks 😀😀😀
what's the alternative to the milgauss?
That's a tough one. There are ball watches but I don't think they can really compete. I think a polaris memovox kind of conceptually works. A globemaster also has a certain something with the same toolish vibe and distinctive dial (but different) but none with the signature glass and lightning hand 😀
Even though some of the alternatives are almost as expensive as the Rolex counterparts, I can appreciate the options. Love the Omegas considered here and the Nomos'.
None of the watches on this list are affordable for like 98% of people out there, but very nice alternatives either way.
I agree with most of your choices, but as far as an alternative to the Daytona goes: I think both the Zenith Chronomaster Original as well as the Tag Heuer Carrera Glassbox are superior to the Speedmaster, as that one in and of itself is just too ubiquitous…
True on the speedmaster. It is everywhere these days, especially bc of the swatch 😀
I like the GS sports GMT quartz offerings.
And why should I care what people think?
@@fontyyy Then don't buy a Rolex. Caring about what people think is the only reason to buy a Rolex.
Amabokoboko!
I have two of the watches named in this episode, the Santos and the Aqua Terra. Both of them are marvelous.
Another great video. I just picked up the two tone gmt 126713GRNR - never thought I would buy two tone, but I do think this watch looks unique and it wears fantastic.
Good choice 🙂
Completely agree with your take on the Quaranta, 6119G and the Vacheron dual time!
Gorgeous watch the pano 😀
The best watch channel by far.
Don't know about that, but happy you think so 😀😀😀
For Day-Date, a great alternative is the A Lange & Sohne Daymatic - especially the Stealth version in Platinum.
I highly appreciate the insights and do share most of your views. For some, you have shown other substitutes. I got a two tone sub to scratch the Rolex itch and to own a ‘bling’ watch.
You got the bluesy, didn’t you?

Cape Town🇿🇦
I also really like the Seiko Prospex Solar diver, Solar powered, typical Seiko arms and dial, but Rolex markings
I think I preferred all of your suggestions to the Rolex, particularly the JLC moonphase over the 1908 😁
Absolutely wonderful take on the big "R"'s alternatives.
Air King is my favorite currently in production Rolex. I still think I would prefer a Milgauss, but the price has to come down a bit yet.
Even though I love and really want a Rolex and will not buy any alternatives, it is nice to see all these options

I'm hearing that too. A shame, but it never really did that well commercially apparently 😀
I really love your videos! Pls. more of them! And yes, I 100% agree on your alternatives, despite I dont like Grand Seiko as much as you do! I also quit with Rolex and sold all my Rolex watches. So now I am free for all the other marvels out there!
Cheers, thanks 😀
Excellent video, Total agree on the Cartier Santos and the parmigiani tonda and Vacheron overseas
Nah, that watch is an affordable homage, not an alternative.
I own a C63 dune GMT, and I love it, but it's an off the shelf movement and comes nowhere CLOSE to Rolex in any category
CW are good watches for the money, but not playing in the same league as the watches discussed.
@@paultuerena agreed
Rolex is the best at marketing. Period. That definitely pulls in the well to do upper middle class customer 😀
How much fun was this video? I had a blast! Just so happens that the GO and Nomos you mentioned are on my list...Spirit Zulu too. It's fun to know that I can enjoy this new hobby as a not-as-wealthy sort.
Happy you enjoyed it .😀
Another great video, I stumbled upon your videos just recently and I must say I’m enjoying them immensely.
IT's on my list for some day 😀😀
Zenith Chronomaster Sport is a nice Daytona alternative IMO. What do you think?
Agree 😀
I love these videos. No hype, transparent and honest opinions, and high production value. Keep these coming!
Thanks 😀😀😀😀
Totally a question out of left field: What do you think about Porsche Design watches?
I did not know Porsche made watches. I know they make Fountain pens though.
The vintage models made by IWC were great.
I absolutely LOVE the GS SBGE285!
And you're not wrong about the Cartier Santos...
I'd prefer some value alternatives vs same or more expensive alternatives. I'm learning as I age status pieces mean less to me. Glycine, Certina and CW are good enough for me.
