@@nateand3 diesel, kerosene, even WD-40 aids i protecting the steel, then deposits a small amount of carbon on burn off that can aid welding. You can use it with or without flux in a properly prepped billet. Check out the vid i made forging damascus with just WD-40. Thanks!
Instead of a clamp, holding the wooden clamp from splitting while gluing the handle, why not forge you a metal skeleton for the split jaw on the wood clamp?
