In the US, leggings are more commonly worn as "athleisure", meaning athletic wear worn during leisure time. It is common to see women of all ages wearing an athletic top with leggings, as if they just went to yoga class.... But they are out shopping and running errands. This has become normal and is seen in many different areas, as well as different income levels (Not just Walmart shoppers, haha). It isn't a common thing in the workplace, but I do think that depends on the industry and location.
Same in Australia :) Girls here wear leggings as pants, but we love our Lulu Lemons, Lorna Janes, and Adidas, which are thick fabric and usually high waisted. Usually we don't worry about covering below the waist with a top. This is acceptable everywhere except for professional environments :)
Those are not leggings and those types of exercises pants are made completely different than traditional leggings. Personally I find it nast when people wear those outside of exercising. It just shows sloppiness and poor choice in clothing.
I wear black leggings tucked into my boots (black equestrian style) with very nice tunics in fall and winter. This way also works with an untucked shell and a duster length cardigan. It looks professional.
Very informative video obviously. In India leggings have made a place with the traditional attire in a casual sense. Most females wear leggings with Indian tops called Kurtis which are actually tunics with side slit, which can reach till above the knee or even below that. And yes the right pick changes the whole game.
Can you make a video on long skirts? Which ones are more casual and which ones are formal? And how to style long skirts? How can we wear them to work? I only have 2 at the moment and I usually wear it as a formal dress but I also want to wear to work but don't know how to style it.
I would love a video on maxi skirts as well. I’ve always loved them but never had one until recently. I wore it to a friends birthday dinner and my son said I looked like I was Amish LOL. Nothing against Amish...but since I’m not, it is not the look I’m trying to portray.
It would be helpful to know your body type! I'm somewhere inbetween a pear and an hourglass, so for me it's important to accentuate my waist i.e. a highwaisted skirt with a cropped or tucked in top. When tucking, just be sure that the fabric of the top isn't too bulky and doesn't show underneath the skirt. If you are not the tallest, like me, slits can help break the silhouette. In that case, also make sure that no socks are showing if you pair the skirt with "closed shoes". It will make you look dumpy. Oh yeah the waistband must neither be too tight (you will look like an 1850 farmer's wife after christmas dinner) or too loose (well, the skirt will drop). As to skirt styles, there are some great thin cotton ones ideal for summer, there's casual tshirt-fabric type ones, pleated, metallic, embroidered, with tulle, circle skirts ... SO MANY! I usually find that most skirts are either casual or festive/party. If you work in a fashionable environment, you can get away with either. You can dress down a festive skirt with sneakers and a jumper. :)
Marie Bach that's really nicely put. Thanks!☺ I've hourglass and inverted triangle type body shape. No clearly defined single body shape. And yeah I've been tucking in my shirt and wearing a belt over the top but the belt was rather loose. So it didn't sufocated me or drop my skirt off my body. It was rather in convenient. I have another skirt i.e. denim. It's light blue in color. I wore it twice or thrice. Although I've recieved many compliments on that still I believe that I should improvey styling with that. I wore it in winters with a turtle neck and denim jacket. Now I'm a teacher/lecturer so I don't wanna look like a baby (ppl usually think that I'm highschool).
captions in spanish!!!! oh yes!!! thank you so much Justine, i'm always talking about you to my mom but she isn't a english speaker, now i can send your vídeos to her! 💖💖💖
As a girl living in leggings, thank you. I wear them so much with skirts and dresses that even my fiance knows that they are called leggings and suggests them when it's a bit chilly outside :D Can you make a video about rainwear? How to find really waterproof jackets and boots/shoes etc
Mónika Belucz Good idea about a rain wear video, and also I think it's adorable that your fiance is looking out for you when he thinks you night get chilly. Very thoughtful!
Thank you for saying that leggings are NOT a replacement for trousers/pants. As an elementary school teacher, I love leggings because of the comfort and mobility. Since I am tall and modest, dresses I couldn’t wear to work because of the lack of length, I can wear now with a pair of leggings. I live in the Southern USA for reference. I appreciate you, Justine!
As an Italian, having lived abroad for a long time, I think that how people wear leggings around Europe is a matter of fashion-culture, if that make any sense. For example, here in Italy, leggings are only appropriate with a longer top, and I would never wear them instead of thighs under a dress or under shorts, or under any kind of skirt. But in the UK or in Austria is really common to see people wear them instead of trousers, even to fancy places, even transparent fabric. But over time I realized that in the UK what is considered to be "fashion" is way more free and wide then here in Italy, where appropriate styles are more "classic", and everyone is always judgemental about other people style. Personally, I do love leggings, they are my favorite autumn/winter everyday style, with high boots and a longer jumper.
In Canada, it's considered a little too casual to wear only leggings to most work places especially in offices or sales. Most women even for casual wear would cover their behinds with a short skirt or tunic length top. The odd time you see a (usually young) woman wearing leggings only but that's fairly rare. I love them but you're so right about the fit, fiber content and quality!
Kathleen Meadows I'm not sure which part of Canada you're from, but I live in the greater Toronto area and some of the stuff you see is absolutely hideous. So I'm assuming you don't live in the GTA.
Kathleen Meadows I also live I Canada and sorry, but mostly every woman, young and old, wears leggings here as replacement for pants. As for me, I never wear leggings outside of a gym. Sport wear should be worn for exercise and not as an every day outfit. And if worn always with something longer to cover up the behind ;)
Hi Semper - well I'm not saying EVERYBODY in Canada abides these guidelines but the majority do :) I live in Victoria BC - moved from KW area 5 years ago.
I live in Toronto too, and in the GTA … I have seen the good, bad and downright scary when it comes to wearing leggings - I suppose it comes down to what you are comfortable wearing. For myself … I wear leggings but the bum must be covered. That's just me.
Kathleen Meadows I live in the GTA and in my early twenties I always wore leggings as pants. I had the body for it. Now in my late twenties I wear longer tops with them.
great topic . thank you. I am disabled so leggings are great for around the house, comfy and casual but I would never have worn them in a work situation. I live in scotland. I am plus size and finding leggings can be fun...not lol. so many have such a short rise that they are impossible to sit down in. these tend to be cheaper . I have found very good plus size legging in good old M and S and that is where i buy them consistently now. high waistband , great fit, and thick enough . oh...I would never ever wear them without a long t shirt or jumper to cover my bum. one of my fav autumn /winter looks is a big oversized sweater with leggings and ankle boots. add a nice scarf and shoulder bag and i feel great xx Plus size ladies can wear leggings well especially if you are apple shaped and your legs are long. xxx oh I am blethering again. i just love your channel . I am 57 and love your style xx
Hi Colette! River Island have some amazing leggings too, high waist and nice and thick for this Scottish climate :) I've had a pair for five years now and aside from me catching them on something and creating a small ladder, they look like new still! x
In India, we have leggings for a longer top with slits on the sides which we call a kurta(s). It's slightly longer than a tunic but not as long as a dress and to go with it the leggings are super long and crinkle at the bottom.
I once wore leggings kurta outfit to a fair in norfolk uk & a girl wearing ill fitting denim hot pants called my clothes “medivial” i told her she was grumpy as her denim diaper looked full 😂 hissss meoww 😆
In India we wear leggings with "kurtas" (tunic/one piece like tops that come in a lot of different lengths) and is worn in both formal and informal settings.
long time ago u promised ull make a video on brow shape for face type. m growing my brows right now and waiting for your video so that I can get a proper brow shape done
Hi Justine! I love your videos, and this one I found really useful, since I wear leggings very often - even as replacement for pants, with long tunic or just a shirt. I live in Serbia, and here it is very common to see girls and women wearing leggings as a regular bottom piece of clothing, whether it's for work or leisure. :)
I live in Tampa Bay. It's extremely casual here. Also very humid in summer. Everywhere you go you see women wearing black leggings with tee shirts. Unfortunately, I've fallen into this category but I like that I blend in. If you're wearing even a casual dress to a supermarket people look because it's so uncommon. They're very comfortable! I've seen photos of the Duchess of Cambridge wearing leggings with a nice sweater and white trainers out and about in past years. Was a nice casual look on her.
Oh, Justine, bless your soul! I really needed this video, I was so confused about choosing leggings, lots of considerations you’ve raised about stuff I wouldn’t have guessed. For a long time I was confused about the appropriateness of wearing them in the office. Thank you for what you’re doing, your work is so informative and educational.
For me leggings are a good substitute to tights in the winter since they are ticker and enable me to wear merino socks under neat to keep my feet warm while wearing a skirt or a dress. Otherwise capri length in the summer with a skirt or a too short dress to wear bare legged.
I was surpised at first when I saw that you were doing a video on leggings and was so happy to hear you say that they are a replacement for tights and not a replacement for pants. I couldn't agree more! There is a tasteful way to wear them!
Here in Sweden you can definitly wear leggings for work, but you will need to dress it up a little bit and make sure that the derrière is covered when you style it.
Thaís Persson I am also in Sweden and would as you also wrote, only wear leggings if you covered in up a little as many others have written. I do see some women wear only leggings in very sporty outfits like if they are going to the gym. At the gym I have also seen some men wearing (sports) leggings as well.
Thaís Persson yes same in Australia! I wear leggings a lot.. thinner more plain ones for everyday and patterned or more solid styles for work or going out with tunics, long tops jackets jumpers.
Thank you dear Justine. In Australia we wear jeggings with shirts, long tunics, and long cardigans with no crutch showing. Also leggings are worn to replace Jeggings in the same outfit. However, I wear flats and cropped ankle boots, shoes and tunics to work also. It is difficult to get good quality nice fitting leggings.
I wear leggins as pants, they're really comfy and you can find plenty styles. It's a thing in Spain and I feel they're quite normalised now. Definitely it's a really interesting topic. In France when I wore them as pants people thought that i was going to the gym or I was a sporty girl haha they had a different concept.
Justine, here in the U.S.A. the people that wear the leggings as a pants replacement are not very educated as what to, how to, and where to wear certain pieces like leggings and even pajama pants. I wear my leggings just like you with a longer top covering my hips. I've seen people at the store wearing pajama pants, it truly makes me sick at my stomach. Your info is so refreshing and appreciated. I'm sharing this video on my facebook page. Thank you!
I've seen nylon tights worn with shorts a lot but it never occurred to me that I could do the same with leggings. That's a cool idea and I can't wait to try it out :)
That's another great point, age appropriate style. Some argue age is not a factor, and that the idea of restricting one's clothing choice is antiquated and doesn't adapt to current lifestyles. My own personal view is somewhere in between. I think if a woman feels (notice I say feels and not looks- as in to adapt to someone else's ideals), fit, youthful and healthy they should dress according to their own sense of what's fitting and comfortable in their surroundings. It can be modern and classy. The same goes for other things like can an older woman sport long hair? Many famous ones as examples do like Jerry Hall, Christie Brinkley, Jane Seymour etc.
It's not something you (Justine) seem to show that often on your channel, but the casual/sporty look with the leggings, shorts, sneakers and black hoodie looks FANTASTIC on you!! It may not be your ideal style, but I love that whole ensemble on you. ❤️💙🖤
I have a request too :D If you find time, could you please do a video on how to look younger/older regarding which clothes you wear? I’m almost 18 and I do look like 12, but I don’t see the point in wearing that much make up (usually nothing or mascara and I want to start wearing red lipstick). Sometimes I feel people are judging me because I dress too “adult” because I look so young on the face. I don’t have a problem with looking younger than I am but maybe there are a few tips and tricks that could help appear like I’m actually 17 and not 12?
Smoky eyes and subtle lip color; red lipstick looks too "dress-up" for someone with a young face. Blazers with jeans, or pencil skirts with a fitted t-shirt. 2-3 inch heels are good, no higher. The right haircut can make all the difference, too.
I was working at a restaurant when I was 24 yrs old, and the lunch customers used to always ask me why I wasn't in school. I looked about 14, but I found these tricks helped. Now i am 50, but I look 35, so I don't mind.
Thank you for your advice! Hmm, then the red lips will have to wait :D I don’t mind having a young face but sometimes I find it annoying when people in public or so treat me like a 12-year old. So thank you very much!
Now that I am almost 60, I don’t mind that people think I am ten years younger than I am, but I remember the strain of being a 29 yo health care professional and being seen as a teenager. It really wasn’t fun back then. Here’s some suggestions, do with them as you will: If you wear red lipstick, just pat a little on your lips with your 4th finger. Too much density of lip color will look “off.” Consider wearing your hair (if long) in the famous “French twist” hairstyle. It’s a bit of a bother to do, but it might help. If you wear your hair short, I can only suggest trying different types of haircuts/shapes to get the effect you want. A “pixie” cut might look very nice but might also accentuate the “12 yr old” effect. Avoid graphic tees and “cutesy” prints except when you want to look younger. Regarding jewelry - when you really don’t want to look too young, wear medium-scaled jewelry. I admit to being on “Team Trousers” rather than “Team Leggings,” but you may look more adult in tailored trousers. You did not say if you were tall or short - this might effect your style strategy.
I'd love to see a similar video for jeans - with tips on fit, material, stitching, etc. I'm also curious about how name brands compare. I hear a lot of the same manufacturers supply clothing for different brands - this is also another topics I'd be interested to see a video on. So much to learn!
I do the same!!! I wear warm leggings under my jeans during most of the winter here 😁 And if I _need_ to go out during the coldest days or huge snowfall, I will straight up *wear snow pants* too. At that point I don't even _care_ that I'm getting funny looks while shopping for groceries! I don't have a car - I need to be warm and dry to be able to walk and take the bus home! 😤😁 Anyway. Hello from Montreal, Quebec, Canada! 👋😁🇨🇦
I have been binge watching your videos since the past few days. I have learnt soo much and literally changed my outlook on dressing sense and style. Gonna make some big changes to my wardrobe. Merci beaucoup Justine. J'adore cette chaîne. C'est géniale !
Thank you Justine! As you mentioned, here in the U.S., leggings are worn at ANY occasion (unfortunately). They have become the go-to because they are easy. Easy does not translate to looking good or appropriate. Your ideas about leggings and the basic criteria when choosing for each body type would solve a lot of the questionable looks out there. And, with a bit more styling as you show here, women would up their game and look/feel better about the choice to wear leggings rather than just throwing them on because they are easy. (Yes, I wear them too). Great topic!! 🙏🏻🌷
I was always afraid of wearing capri leggings with my short dresses because I wasn't sure how it would look but after seeing you wear them and talk about them, I've worn them 2 or three times like this and I think they look great! (Very helpful for those of us who are too tall to find a long enough dress!!!)
I'll add a comment here as another Canadian and ones that lives in the birthplace of Lululemon, Vancouver. I find since I'm pretty active and we have so much rain that wearing active leggings as pants are a great option for my casual wear. I even wear them with short tops too if I'm feeling particularly good about my stomach that day! I just make sure I don't wear ones that aren't squat proof (see-through in the rear when bending).
puja samantaray i am definitely not Justine but i learned from her to remember proportions! If you are confident to carry out large extract prints then go ahead! Chevron is my favourite... But i also like black and white abstract print ones! They can be teamed with sooo many solid colors. I follow capsule weardrobe...so few solid colors and three or four differently printed leggings...and i am good to go! The material i select for solid colors is cotton elastane (lux lycra) but printed one comes with viscose elastane or viscose.
puja samantaray i hope it helps! I learned a lot from Justine about styling a garment. Follow her videos and you will be surprised at your own improved style!
THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH. I watched a lot of vids from you and now I finally know why nothing fits me :) I always thought I had a cool skin tone and so I wore wrong colors. After a few vids I knew what would look good on me and I went shopping, everything looks sooo great and I feel very good in all clothes. MERCI
Thanks for this theme. It's really useful. I've avoided the leggings because I didn't know how to wear them. Leggings suit for casual or sports fit in Russia. I don't see them in the office actually.
Justine, I love your videos, they are very informative and well--produced. Agree with everything you've said about leggings. One of my pet peeves about the way many North American women wear leggings (I live in Canada); is that they can't seem to get it through their heads that leggings are footless hosiery, *not pants*! No matter how slim or fit they are, women who go out in public wearing leggings without a tunic-length top, look (at best) as though they're not completely in touch with reality (did you forget to put your pants on?). Regardless of how "normal" this practice has become, women who imagine it 'looks good' are deluding themselves.
I'm in the Midwestern US and at my very casual (jeans, sandals, t-shirts permitted daily) leggings are not in the dress code. We do not see the public at our site so it often falls to the manager of the department what you can actually get away with. We do see them but they aren't well received by peers. Neither are bedroom slippers but that's another discussion! So while people do wear them here for everything it doesn't mean it's necessarily accepted. I personally don't own any and my circle of friends do not wear them. I think here they are seen as sloppy because no one makes an outfit, they just throw on a t-shirt. However, seeing how you've styled them I'd be more tempted to! These outfits are really cute!
Very useful , I usually wear leggings with under the knee length dresses and upove ankle ones too but usually that would be for afternoon occasions , we don't really wear them alot here (Egypt) . 😊
I love the new caption-transition thing in the video! One can see you enjoyed making it! In my country I see a lot of people on the streets wearing leggings as sort of pants But, although I work in IT, which means the opposite of having adress code 😊, I could never I did come in like gym leggings a few times, but those are much more firm, and I always wear a long T-shirt that covers my sitting are
Great video Justine! I live in Vancouver Canada where Lululemon reigns! I actually work in an office building where Lululemon has three floors. I’ve seen everything!! I’ve always gone with the fashion advisors who recommend wearing tunic length tops with leggings but a lot of younger people don’t adhere to that.
I wear leggings when I'm going to the gym that day but sometimes it's necessary to wear a 'proper' outfit and bring the leggings to change into. Leggings are pretty common in NZ, especially in different styles and patterns.
Interesting video. I'm in Australia and have never seen leggings in the workplace but I've always worked in corporate environments. I personally only wear them to lounge around the house or do yoga or other exercise but a lot of women tend to wear exercise wear out and about even if they're not exercising these days. I personally don't like that look but I get that I'm in a minority there. I think it's kind of interesting at what point leggings become jeggings or take on some other more tailored look with different fabrics.
Hi Sally-ann. l am in Australia too. ln Tasmania leggings are quite popular l think. Maybe it's because it's so flipping cold down here. l think they can look really smart with heeled boots and longer tops. l only wear plain black or very dark ones though. Never patterned ones.
I'm also Australian and I'm not a fan of how leggings with short tops have become the staple for many (even older women) for just being out and about doing their shopping. And puleeese don't get me started on the 'scrunch bum' style! 🤨 I just want to tell them to get some dignity. Love all the ways Justine wears hers! ❤
I was pleased to hear you say they are not replacement for pants. Here in the US leggings are worn as a replacement for pants (unfortunately). I have even seen people wear them as work attire. Thanks for sharing!
I love leggings but thicker kind. I own corduroy and heat tech (Uniqlo) ones that are like pants in addition to more traditional leggings and leggings to work out. I think leggings are accepted in Southern California especially under tunics. I say be happy wearing your leggings as pants if you want, under tunics, or do not wear leggings if you do not like them. Theres tons of styles and types of clothing for all of us to be happy.
Right? One of my mantras is "Leggings *are not* pants." And far too many people don't seem to have any awareness of how their leggings fit or what's showing from underneath. I live in a hot country so I get that it's often a cooler option than pants, but people just do the most!
Haha, ironically my biggest pet peeve is the opposite! I feel like if you're going to wear them under a dress, why not just opt for tights??? Lol - I do remember when they first started gaining in popularity in the US I was of a completely different mind - wearing leggings without covering your butt was like not wearing pants! Not sure what changed... 🤷🏽♀️ Thanks Justine for a wonderfully informative video as always!
Chenoa Marquis definitely agree that people don't check their behind's before walking out the door - that or they're okay with their neon pink panties showing!! 😭
i wear thicker black leggings with a small heel or mid-calf boots, a tunic top. If I wear a regular length top I will wear a long sweater or flowing duster over it. Last week I went to a party with knit (good quality) black leggings, with a sleeveless tiered top and a long mesh cardigan (all black) with silver wedge sandals. I got a ton of compliments on my outfit. I'm a legging addict! I'm in the USA. Thanks for this video and your styling ideas. Loved the first example with the belt. I'm going to try that.
I have dozens of colorful leggings, and three that are black. I live in the US and some people wear them as pants - this looks fine on very thin and/or very young girls, but it is not great on most adults. I am also tall, and I wear them under long shirts or short dresses.
Hi Justine, I'm enjoying your videos very much but I'd just like to point out that some of the best technical fabrics used for sportswear such as Supplex and Meryl are actually nylon/spandex, yes 100% synthetic but they are far more breathable and cool to wear than many others including cotton/spandex mix. Fabric technology has turned received wisdom on its head regarding fibres and breathability.
Great video! Thanks for sharing, I live in North America and yes, leggings can be worn everywhere, however I agree they’re not meant to be worn as pants or trousers 👌🏻 I wear them with tunics and short dresses too!
Hi, Justine I don't know how it goes in Paris. But, as i living in Rennes, there are more people use legging for going to work. Maybe it depends on what institution you work for. And thank you so much for the great content :D
Love your videos. I am so intrigued by french fashion and the minimalist wardrobe. I am making a goal to build a good capsule wardrobe with good quality essential pieces. Any chance you might do a video on what brands (particularly American) you think make high quality clothing that is not fast fashion? Especially for those of us on a budget.
I love this episode so much, since i wear leggings with most of my outfits. One of my challenges is getting a good pair to fit me because I am fat + bottom heavy. What I do not do, though, is to wear it on its own as a replacement for proper pants or jeans. Thank you for the added insight! 😍😍😍
In the Netherlands, or at least in my city (Rotterdam) I see a lot of women wearing leggings to replace trousers. And not nice thick leggings either, I can often see what underwear they're wearing (or not wearing as the case can be O_o). Once I could even see the label on the inside of the legging, that really is too thin. Can't say I'm a fan :P I prefer to wear mine like you do :)
They peobably dont realise that their leggings are see-through. Its not that easy to tell in the mirror indoors. Depending on the severity of transparency, and if they have the opportunity to cover up, tell them. They will in all likelihood never wear them again. A girl at the gym a while ago told me that my workout tights were getting transparent. It was from wear and tear, and i never noticed. Until i had the noney to replace them i made sure to wear black boxers/hipster under them. They might take it badly, but im always grateful if someone lets me know.
I get what you're saying, you have a good point, but A) we're not talking about ladies at the gym wearing proper sports leggings but ladies on the street wearing cheap (fast) fashion leggings that really should always be combined with tops that are long enough to cover the bum and B) (and this one is the most important), I'm not gonna tap every, or any, unfamiliar lady on the shoulder when walking outside to tell her that her underwear is showing. Even if I could get past my shyness, I just have the feeling it wouldn't go over well, coming from a stranger (who apparently looks at bums) ;P I did however once let a lady on the train know her fly was undone, which I happened to notice as she was standing and I was sitting on the stairs (the train was full) cause it was the right thing to do. I did have to beat my shyness into submission though, it did not come easy.
Wolford is the ultimate legging indulgence; I have a few pairs and they are excellent and worth the investment! I'm in ballet class 4 times a week and this is very helpful information on choosing good quality and fit! I definitely notice a difference if I go with the cheap brand of leggings or tights-they fade, stretch out, get holes easily, and it can be distracting while dancing if they're riding up in some weird way. Some of my dance wear has crossed over into day wear, (and vice versa) and I too wear leggings as tights under dresses that are too short or in the winter months.
Thank you. I love leggings with tunics. Very comfortable. I like the athletic yoga pants. The seams and quality are great. For casual wear and exercise I reach for them a lot. I like the Athleta brand. Alo is nice too.
I recently had a discussion with my mother. She likes to wear white trousers with a coloured top and I told her that I would intuitively always wear the darker colour at the bottom and the lighter one on top (like a grey shirt and black trousers, not the other way round),but thinking about it I couldn't tell my mom WHY I would do that. My question: Is my intuition right and if so, why is that? Thank you for your lovely helpful videos! Love, Astrid
Fräulein Krause I look better with the lighter color on the bottom of the outfit (though I generally don’t choose white). That’s b/c I am “top-heavy.” A “pear-shaped” lady would probably look better with the lighter colour on top.
I wear athletic Lululemon leggings ("yoga pants") all the time to the gym, or on days when I'm being active/running errands. Of course, these are designed to be worn as pants and are totally acceptable here in Canada (I see them everywhere, with the exception of formal places like the workplace). Would I get strange looks in Europe? What do women there wear in place of yoga pants to work out? Edit: P.S. - Great video as always Justine! :)
Life's too short for leggings not to be pants!! I only ever wear leggings. With tunics, with shorter tops, everywhere and any time. I feel people should get over it. I'm Dutch btw.
Good tip about the fabric content. One thing I will say in favor of faux leather (jeggings) though is that they can be great layered over thermals in cold, wet weather. I took a pair on vacation last winter and loved them.
No fashion adviser that I know of here in the US ever, ever, ever recommends wearing leggings as trousers. I've yet to see anyone advise wearing a top shorter than tunic length. What you may well see worn by Wal-Mart shoppers is another story.
I see a lot in the urban fashion wear industry. Think FashionNova. They call them "skinny-leg" pants, but they are essentially leggings. A lot of their matching sets early on were leggings with a crop top. I've not shopped there in a while so I'm not sure if this is still the norm but it was at one point in time.
Depends on what you're trying to show off. Near the coast, showing off that toned bod and accenting the breasts? Absolutely leggings, loose crop top / tank top, fancy bra underneath. For business or any level of work higher than casual, never.
here in Egypt we wear leggings as a replacement for the transparent socks so they are worn under dress , sometimes they are not recognized as they wear long boots under the dress but still looks chic and the most important thing that they don't show skin which is great :D (thumps up)
Thank you for this video. Where I live in the USA, some women wear leggings as pants, I think it looks tacky. I love leggings in the winter with long sweaters and boots. So warm and comfy.
Such an informative video again! I'll consider this in the future - right now, it seems I've been lucky, although I had no idea what to look for, when buying them. Would you mind telling us, what kind of exercise you do? I couldn't avoid noticing, how healthy, but athletic you look in this video.
I definitely see people wear leggings as pants in the US, but mostly in casual settings like running errands, etc. I think leggings as pants should be limited to the gym but they do look great with a tunic. Thanks for another great video, Justine. :)
Hi, this is the 3rd of your video that I have watched. I am from the Philippines and since its a tropical country we usually wear leggings in the office like myself. I wear it with long blouse or top because my thigh are too big. your videos are informative like the one that explain the undertone. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Justine, I love your videos and I just adore the belt you were wearing with the tunic. Where did you get it? Thank you for all of your valuable information and for your sparkling personality. You always brighten my day!
Yesterday I saw a girl working in bus, selling tickets and she was wear leggings as a replacement for pants, just with t-shirt. (I'm from Russia). But I never saw anyone in office who was wear leggins. So I think in Russia it's ok to wear leggins as a pants if you don't have dress code at your work.
Hi Justine! In India we were leggings very often with knee length 'kurthas'(a colourful version of dress, very casual) there are varied styles of wearing kurtas, and we women in India love it!
shorea27 I would think its fine. Everything is coming back into fashion nowadays. Besides leggings were around in the 80s they just werent called 'leggings'.
Leggings were called stirrups then and had the elastic you put under your foot and put the socks over that. And were always worn with a long tunic top. We never wore them with short tops. Always covered the butt and crotch area with an over sized top. Now girls wear them as glorified tights and it's really ugly and very tacky looking.
Thank you for another great video, especially one that tackles a clothing item we don't usually think about much (though we should, as it is evident from the video).
We wear leggins more like tights, never really as pants. Personally i dont wear them at all. I dont like my legs that much to wear skin-tight clothing. Too skinny so i prefer bell bottoms with heavy boots. In summer i do see quite some women with leggins here that wear them with long parkas or sweaters and heavy boots. But its more often tourists that do that. Also - one must avoid garish colours and terrible patterns on leggins. Thats for either punk-style or people with no taste imo.
Not really, Spain is a country where the whole culture has gone too casual (dropping the pronouns of respect, swearing everywhere, forgetting dress codes to the point people go to morning weddings in Oscar-length gowns...) But, yes, the North is still more formal than the South... but I go to work in leggings and my job is white collar.
Sorry Morgan Lefai, you've stated your opinion and I respect it, but I don't share your view of Spanish being "too" casual. After 40 years of fascism due to a coup supported by some European countries and the US, some people have reacted against certain rules and manners because they simply reject them. In Asturies, there are more people of this kind than if one goes to Spain. Anyway, leggings are not appropriate in white collar jobs in most of the cases here.
Very good content! Thanks for the tips. I'm Belgian but I did an exchange program in the USA a few years ago. Over there, people wear leggings everywhere. In my high school, it was the most common piece of clothing. So when I came back to Belgium, I felt so uncomfortable wearing jeans and tigter shirts everywhere. I was just so used to leggings and an oversized T-shirt of some school club or a big hoodie. So even though people usually don't go shopping or to the supermarket in "chill clothes", I do it anyway, just not to university or to anything I would wear makeup for or do my hair nicely. So basically, I wear leggings as a replacement for sweat pants because I feel like sweat pants are comfy clothes but they become really trashy when you go out with sweat pants and a big hoody because then every shape of your body is big and your head kind of drowns in the clothes. Instead, I either wear tight pants and a very loose top or I wear sweat pants and a tighter top when I wear comfy clothes. Capri leggings are great for me with a shorter skirt. I don't like showing off my upper legs and with longer skirts my already short legs look even shorter so I often wear long blouses or short loose skirts with some capri leggings. Plus point is you never have to worry about "gymnastic moves that might show the candy shop" in a skirt if you know what I mean. ;)
This is acceptable everywhere except for professional environments :)
same in UK
it looks very unprofessional and inappropriate in the workplace, unless its not a respectable business in the 1st place anyway..............
I haven't been to India but I have seen similar outfits in Nepal. Interesting!
Ansil George 👍🏻
J Techi . Thanks a lot.
I love the idea of combining modern with traditional!
Can you recommend something that is available in india?
Can you make a video on long skirts? Which ones are more casual and which ones are formal? And how to style long skirts? How can we wear them to work? I only have 2 at the moment and I usually wear it as a formal dress but I also want to wear to work but don't know how to style it.
Ahsana Idris I would love this also.
I would love a video on maxi skirts as well. I’ve always loved them but never had one until recently. I wore it to a friends birthday dinner and my son said I looked like I was Amish LOL. Nothing against Amish...but since I’m not, it is not the look I’m trying to portray.
the_sheilatequila hahaha I believe he was trying to conpliment u? But I love wearing dresses esp. long skirts.
I bought once spray who waterproofs your shoes and clothes but ive lost it lol
Colette Clairvoyant have you tried Evans? Some of theirs are very high waisted and comfy.
Thank you. i haven't shopped in Evans for ages. we had a store near us but it closed. i will maybe check them out online xxx
Sainsburys Tu sell really good flattering leggings.
thanks. i buy a lot fom Tu but haven't tried theri leggings. great thanks xxx
Yess! It looks so elegant.
Floppy leggings
Thanks Justine, another informative video! I'm in Australia and think leggings in the workplace, especially an office, would be a no go.
Thaís Persson yes! Same in India as well!
Leggings are perfect with large sweats and pullovers or with mini dresses/ skirts, styled with fancy boots ( overknees) or bikerboots. 👌
Great!
I love high waisted leggings I only wear them around the house when I am working out. TFS Justine you looked fabulous in all the outfits!
Very helpful. I've never tried to wear them w shorts but I'm excited to try
Many years ago (in the 1970's!) I wore them under very short shorts and they looked good on my then young body.
Susan Mathis yes. They look great on Justine or at least the way she styled them.
I love them with short babydoll type dresses/tops or tunic dresses. I wear them almost every day when the weather is cooler, thank you for this!
I think they are great to wear short dresses in informal work environments, such as schools. I am a teacher and I love wearing them in the spring!
You are a master of breaking concepts down into their elemental parts, so we can understand fine points of fit. Brava!
I think you should use white fonts in the leggings comparison scene. Dark fonts is really hard to read in black background.
Hmm, then the red lips will have to wait :D
I don’t mind having a young face but sometimes I find it annoying when people in public or so treat me like a 12-year old.
So thank you very much!
Like the idea, I'm 32 and often taken for a teenager/early 20's.
Now that I am almost 60, I don’t mind that people think I am ten years younger than I am, but I remember the strain of being a 29 yo health care professional and being seen as a teenager. It really wasn’t fun back then.
Here’s some suggestions, do with them as you will:
If you wear red lipstick, just pat a little on your lips with your 4th finger. Too much density of lip color will look “off.”
Consider wearing your hair (if long) in the famous “French twist” hairstyle.
Great video! I love wearing leggings with dresses, especially denim dresses.
Really liked the editing for the scenes with three outfits! :)
Informative and well done as always....thank you!
I'd love to see a similar video for jeans - with tips on fit, material, stitching, etc. I'm also curious about how name brands compare. I hear a lot of the same manufacturers supply clothing for different brands - this is also another topics I'd be interested to see a video on. So much to learn!
Thanks you! this is a discussion I was having with my friends, this will help settle the matter!
Oskana - so who is wearing them as pants? You or your friends? 😉
Soo useful and educational! Great content Justine!💛💛
I religiously follow your channel😍
Keep progressing!
Lots of love from India! :D
I live in Bogotá, a cold city the most of the time, so I wear leggins under my pants, to have two layers and stay my leggs warm :)
Anyway.
OMG Justine! I was organizing my closet yesterday and as I was putting my leggins away I told myself I have to research this topic and here we are! 🙌🏼
How about colours and paterened leggings vs plain black ones? Can you shed some light on how to choose them .
puja samantaray i am definitely not Justine but i learned from her to remember proportions!
I like leggings with tall boots and a long sweater during the winter in Colorado, U.S. This type of outfit can be worn in a causal office here.
So many details so beautifully explained. Genius communicator!
Thank you, Justine. Personal opinions about leggings aside, this was a helpful video!
In my country I see a lot of people on the streets wearing leggings as sort of pants
But, although I work in IT, which means the opposite of having adress code 😊, I could never
I did come in like gym leggings a few times, but those are much more firm, and I always wear a long T-shirt that covers my sitting are
Great video! I love leggings with a long shirt/tunique/short dress to protect my skin agains the sun in summer
Hi Justine, just wondering which makeup are you wearing? It looks very good! Thanks ;)
I'm with you
This isn't my favorite time of clothing
I love the different but anyway similar backgrounds that you chose for the outfits!
This needs to be shared all over! Haha, my biggest pet peeve is people wearing leggings as pants (unless it’s with a tunic)!
Thanks Justine for a wonderfully informative video as always!
Chenoa Marquis definitely agree that people don't check their behind's before walking out the door - that or they're okay with their neon pink panties showing!! 😭
Nabila Ayaba Haha! Yes, you could also just wear tights/pantyhose! I’m sure my opinions will change a million times over for different trends!
I will wear them with a tunic, short dress or kurta!
i wear thicker black leggings with a small heel or mid-calf boots, a tunic top.
Very useful video!! 💖
Great video! Thanks for sharing, I live in North America and yes, leggings can be worn everywhere, however I agree they’re not meant to be worn as pants or trousers 👌🏻 I wear them with tunics and short dresses too!
Love this video 🙂so helpful 👍xx
Great video Justine and an interesting topic. Loved how you styled leggings and I totally agree that they should not replace pants!🇨🇦
Justine good advice. Thanks for the styling options... very helpful. You are cute as a button!
You are looking radiant! Would you consider doing a video of your make up and skincare routine? Thanks!
Hi I m from India and girl's wear leggings with Kurtis
Halima Saadia beautiful!!!
LOL!!
MT Hayes You have a good attitude ! I bet the gal who told you was polite about it, and it was good of her to say something.
My favorite leggings are black yoga pants/ athletic wear. They are generally constructed better.
Thank you for the captions! Otherwise, I've never really liked leggings but great tips!
Life's too short for leggings not to be pants!! I only ever wear leggings. With tunics, with shorter tops, everywhere and any time. I feel people should get over it. I'm Dutch btw.
GrumpetteJV hopefully they aren't too see-through
GrumpetteJV I am willing to bet that you're not older than 25 and probably super skinny. Tell me if I'm wrong.
Semper Fidelis does it matter?
I wear a lot of leggings too and I Dutch too. And 40 years old. But not as pants
Wrong! I am in fact 38 and not super skinny!
I have seen lots if women wear leggings as trousers with really short tops or T-shirts
What one sees is often NOT what is advisable.
Depends on what you're trying to show off. Near the coast, showing off that toned bod and accenting the breasts? Absolutely leggings, loose crop top / tank top, fancy bra underneath. For business or any level of work higher than casual, never.
Piddeaux
Indeed 👍
here in Egypt we wear leggings as a replacement for the transparent socks so they are worn under dress , sometimes they are not recognized as they wear long boots under the dress but still looks chic and the most important thing that they don't show skin which is great :D (thumps up)
Thank you for this video. Where I live in the USA, some women wear leggings as pants, I think it looks tacky. I love leggings in the winter with long sweaters and boots. So warm and comfy.
I love that too 😊
Such an informative video again! I'll consider this in the future - right now, it seems I've been lucky, although I had no idea what to look for, when buying them. Would you mind telling us, what kind of exercise you do? I couldn't avoid noticing, how healthy, but athletic you look in this video.
I wear leggings under long skirts in winter to keep warm or under my running skirt if its REALLY cold to go for a run.......
I definitely see people wear leggings as pants in the US, but mostly in casual settings like running errands, etc. I think leggings as pants should be limited to the gym but they do look great with a tunic. Thanks for another great video, Justine. :)
I wear legging today... Thanks Justine!!!
Hi, this is the 3rd of your video that I have watched. I am from the Philippines and since its a tropical country we usually wear leggings in the office like myself. I wear it with long blouse or top because my thigh are too big. your videos are informative like the one that explain the undertone. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
italy: leggings are NOT pants! 😨😂
Dina!!.... Thankyou....
They are flattering...in leather...
Can you still pair leggings with short denim skirts or are these too 80's?
shorea27 I would think its fine. Everything is coming back into fashion nowadays. Besides leggings were around in the 80s they just werent called 'leggings'.
I don't think you are asking the right question. you should ask if you want to wear them, if yes, wear them!!
Very well done and tasteful, as usual. I see this clothing item not being worn properly a lot, here in the US. Thank you Justine.
In Asturies, North of Spain, they're too casual to wear if one goes to work.
Plus point is you never have to worry about "gymnastic moves that might show the candy shop" in a skirt if you know what I mean. ;)
