I was watching that England game live as a kid. To this day, I could not believe what I saw it was truly amazing. He played with a smile on his face and entertained the world at the same time. What a legend!
he could've just stood still and caught it
Yeah I remember this too. Sitting with my family as a kid, couldn’t believe it.
@@leftmono1016 so youd remember the offside flag was already up, which is why he chose to do the crazy save lol
Ppl seem to forget when jamie Redknapp chipped back to higuta he was doing so cus the game was to be restarted from a goal kick . Everyone in the ground knew it. So higuta doing that knew if he messed up it wouldnt of counted as goal ... watch the minute run up to the scorpion kick .
@@iiRodeoclowniithank god some else remembers jamie Redknapp was chipping it back to restart the game
I was at Wembley for that England Columbia game. After that, no one cared about the game much. Even after it was a nil nil draw. All anyone could talk about in the stands and in the tube going home was that kick.
Thats great.its Colombia not columbia tho.(i dont mean to be rude)
Grew in Africa watching this legend...everyone wanted to be him! Let him know he's extremely popular in Africa within my generation. RIP Escobar who got murdered after than own goal.
uhh it was Pablo Escobar he was talking about.
do you have internet in africaa
The whole story of the Colombian team of that era should be made into a series. Not just Higuita. Valderama, Asprilla, Rincon, Valencia.... and of course Andrés Escobar. A story of brilliance, beauty, but also tragedy.
ESPN did a really good doc for their 30 for 30 series named The Two Escobars.
I learned something new today. I didn't know Asprilla was the era as Higuita. Thanks!
There is actually a Colombian series precisely about this, showing all the stories of Asprilla, Valderrama, Higuita, Rincon, etc, from their humble beginnings to playing world cups. It is called "La Seleccion" produced by Caracol. Definitely recommend watching if you can find it 👍
Netflix actually has a show dedicated to just that.
@@elvinjenkinsii8109 Really? What's it called? May not be available where I am (Singapore).
This man truly was an innovative athlete. When they talk about taking chances in life, Rene Higuita took it to the extreme, and in return, became an Icon.
im german and born 84 italia 90 i was 6 years old the years later i rewatched the colombian and germany wc 90 games so many times(cause my father recorded on tape) , higuita and el pibe r the reason i carry the colombian nationalteam in my heart since i was 6-8 years old .420 peace

Great goalkeeper, great guy.
The one who introduced the sweeper keeper role in football.

The documentary I didn't know I needed! Looks brilliant
but not as brilliant as your ass
He's adored in his country and he's adored in Africa and abroad. Long live HIguita.
Africa and abroad? That's REALLY strange phrasing
@@willwrite3675 I kind of like it. Like Africa's the centre and everywhere else is everywhere else. 😊
@@willwrite3675 If he is african it's logical, he knows that people love him there, because he experienced it.
The scorpion defense was one of the top magic moments in football, like Pelé dribbling Mazurkievsky without touching the ball.
Definitely deserves a Netflix special. What a player he was
Wrong. This should be in ESPN+ special kid
@@robinloxley3955 hell up
even when compared to modern football and modern interpretations of goalkeeping this guy is still ahead of its time. like wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ahead. so much so that you just had to call him "loco". no one was ready for that stuff. maybe it's not him who is loco, but us.
I think it is impossible to identify another moment in sports when an athlete performed a skill successfully that was so outrageous and so risky in their respective sport. In Higuita's case it was a skill that nobody else in the history of the game did!
It was a friendly. Zero stakes for Colombia.
It was also blown for a foul before this, so play had already stopped, so zero risk.
@@joaovinicius3403 risk of conceding a goal as a professional, risk of embarrassment, is still risk.
@@Bamboodonutz I'm pretty sure the whistle had blown; there were zero stakes. Still entertaining nonetheless.
@@joaovinicius3403 it was at a world cup. i was watching it on tv as it happened
Thanks to this legend every football kid in world attemped the heel safe once, also thanks to this Goat i have a chin scar.
A well deserved recognition. Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
From an era when footballers had personalities, unlike many of today's money hungry robots.
i couldnt agree more
When he bust that scorpion kick in "whatever game it was in the 90s", everyone was in the playground or the park trying to replicate it the next day. Legend.
It wasn't a world cup game. It was a friendly.
Ha I remember that at my school a lot of kids had busted up chins trying to do it. Parents thought they'd been in a fight
Not in the world cup
The fact that Higuita would have still been a beast in the modern game!
He will make modern Goalkeeper look like amateur. This guy will go for the ball without thinking twice, nothing can stop him in the pitch when he dribbles the ball. True Legend.
This keeper would be perfect in the modern game where they want the teams to play from the back.
Stfu you don’t know anything dumb mf 😂😂😂
Hey Faginho you sound clueless as fk 😂😂😂😂
as an American-Colombian, that looks incredible
Siempre me parecio un personaje entrañable y un buen arquero... Saludos desde Argentina!
This documentary is fantastic. René Higuita was a legend!
We were lucky generation.
We watched Maradona, Higuita, Campos, Chilavert, Valderama, Batistuta, Romario, Fenomen Ronaldo, Baggio, Roberto Carlos, Matthaus, Zidane and more.

Big respect crazy man 🔥👊
Now this is a true Netflix Football documentary!
Wow, long overdue. What a legend in the game, most entertaining keeper ever. Even supporters of the opposing team look forward to see what he will do

I feel that Latin American Goalkeepers have been underrated. Everyone is quick to talk about the likes of Kahn or Casillas but I seldom hear about the likes of Higuita, Campos, Chilavert, etc. I feel those keepers also played a huge role in the development of Goalkeepers period.
not really, ederson and allison have been the best goalies in the world these past few years. ochoa is always talked about every world cup and navas has won countless accolades
fan of football never forget this goalkeeper you can ad thomas nkono joseph antoine bell african great and special oscar for tony meola he was fun too !
You really forgot the Brazilians man, there was a dozen and more of great goalkeepers since the old times in 🇧🇷
No, Brazilian keepers have been highly rated forever and as cool as this is, it has not revolutionised goalkeeping, "sweeper keeper" and attacking goalkeepers has never become a popular style outside of a few eccentric goalies.
I'm Colombian, but Chilavert was something special
René’s scorpion kick is almost up there with Bruce Grobbelaar’s crazy legs routine!

To witness the ascorpion kick was a moment in history. A moment in the world game that comes once a century. If that. I always felt he was acting as if the whistle had gone and he did it for show. Cannot believe someone would do that in a live game.
That was offside. So if that was goal, it would not be allowed. Still amazing move from RENE
it had already gone, it was offside which is why he chose the craziest way to stop the shot.

legend is the word
Wow I must watch it
Fun fact when renee higuta did the scorpion kick 10 seconds b4 there was break in play for where ball was thrown back into play .the ball from Jamie Redknapp chipped the ball back to the Colombian keeper. Everyone in the ground knew play wouldnt be effected . Higuita knew if he messed up a goal wouldn't count . But yeh in world cup he cost his country. One name must haunt him .. Rodger Miller.
all the comments here are praising him like he was a new Jesus but in reality he was a very mediocre gk with connection to the most evil men in Colombia. Also failed in Europe where Escobar couldnt buy him opponents lmao
