My dad attended that game. I was born in the U.S. but as Salvadorians and seeing this team’s potential we were low key rooting for him and were so sad to hear about his tragic death days later. Glad this will be highlighted and his memory is honored.

Own goals are inevitable if you play football especially if you are a defender. There is no way to perfectly time your block or challenge and be able to predict with pinpoint accuracy which way the ball will ricochet. So sad this happened to him. Rip.
you can block 50 goals but if u accidentally make 1 mistake, you're considered the villain. As an attacker, you can miss 50 shots but score 1 and you're the hero. Defenders are so underrated.

My mother was a child living in a town close to Medellin (Pablo Escobar’s main city) when this happened. She was watching the game with the rest of her family in the living room. She told me that once the goal went in off his leg, everyone watching knew he was already dead. The game wasn’t even over yet and Colombia could have came back, but even with that everyone knew this guy was in bad trouble.

This was the first World Cup I can remember as a kid. Remember how stunned I was when I heard about the murder, I'd never heard anything like that before in football.
