Master 5422/23D Key Box Decoding

  • An Oak City Locksport member figured out a way to decode the 5422/23D Key Box. This new decode method was released at CackalackyCon and Layer8. Note that if too much pressure is used that the buttons can break.
    Boxes like these are typically on doors for real estate agents, or mounted on buldings for facilities/maintenance teams, FCAP or telco rooms, etc. The problem is that if you can easily decode these, your high security keys or cards are now exposed.

    Worked perfectly! You’re the MAN!!! People, listen to the instructions carefully…… the buttons with the most resistance are the ones to crack the code, not those that suppress easily. I learned the hard way !

    It worked well. Only took me two tries to get it done. I did not use any tool other than my two hands. I used two index fingers to press the top and bottom buttons down, then used my thumb to feel the feedback / tighten numbers. I located the four tighten buttons quickly. It worked great. Thank you so much! ❤

    This actually worked, thank you. Took me about 15minutes, but I was able to open the lock.
    For those who don't know what "feedback" in this video means, it means the combination keys are firmer, you can't press them down as easy as the non-combination keys.

    Ty!!! Did the trick. Helped me to reaffirm the correct code. It wouldn't open because one of the button mechanisms we turned on was malfunctioning out of the box. After struggling a bit, we got it open and turned the malfunctioning one to off. New code works great. A bit unnerving how easy it was to decode with this method. 😮 Will have to reassess our locking protocol.

    I used the tension wrench like his 3/8” made one. Then make sure your on a flat solid surface, then I laid an 8mm 5” long Allen wrench on top of the activation button he’s jostling if you notice when he pushes down it wants to move up slightly on its own. If you use the Allen to just prevent that from free raising then just press the button with little force you will visually see the button ever so slightly move ant that indicates a lock code number. Reposition your Allen to hold the position button slightly so it doesn’t lift on its own and repeat. Record the numbers that you see cause a very slight visual movement of that top button. You will notice buttons won’t move it they are ones you won’t use.

    You need to DEFINE and/or EXPLAIN what the FEELING of said "FEEDBACK" the correct #'s in the combo give, that the INcorrect #'s do NOT give...
    Basically; the correct and incorrect numbers are both going to give you some measurement of "feedback"...

    The easy way is to drive the hinge pins out with a pin punch and hammer. With the pins removed the cover falls off and you are done. Now you can read or reset the code and replace the pins.

    WOOOOOOW, That worked!!! My lock is 5422 model P19919 that I bought a couple of weeks ago and a kind of joker found funny to lock it and did not leave the combination.
    I put the tip of my finger in water to make sure it is sensible enough and tested for every button. I used the tool lock in the Clear button, then moved the lock/release button up down gently with the finger on it.
    Then I felt buttons that does not transmit movement at all, some that transmit the vibration and some that transmit the vibration and movement enough strong like if there is something behind communicating the movement. I compared the button of most sensitivity with the rest of suspects to discard. I get a three digit combination and voilá, opened.
    Thank you Oak City Locksport!

      My lock is vertically mounted.
      I used an Alan wrench to push down the bottom button all the way down (without putting any pressure on the top button) and tested each button, saw the top button slightly vibrate when pressing slightly repeatedly on the buttons with the most resistance. Figured out the 4 combo and it worked!!

    I picked this model without the new technique you were using. I tried that way but it locked up the buttons and I couldn't get any feedback. I went back to the LPL method and while at first it was hard to tell which buttons were free under spring tension, it eventually became clear that the non-combination buttons would bind after bottoming out with a sort of spongy feel followed by some friction on the last 20-30 thousandths of an inch or so. It was a bit of a challenge getting the feel for it but now I figure I could to this again on demand in a few minutes. The weird thing was that if you follow LPL's method, you can work your way down to the final row, #,0,*, and if you've pushed in the wrong buttons on the way you won't get correct feedback and it will be hard to tell if that row has any of the combination buttons. In that case try starting from the bottom after resetting the buttons, pushing #,0,* and then the release lever while testing each button for binding. Usually you can get a better feel starting fresh.

    Amazing video! Although your method did not work for me, it did bring me to the right track- I am a locksmith in Maryland and had a customer bring me on of these. For those that want to try a different way: Use the original jamming method for the anti jamming model. I was using a P19918 however, you will get keys that you press down that feel SOLID and give little to nothing in return. The other keys will give slightly or may even click- its a very tiny difference in the amount of distance the keys press but the solid keys ARE noticeable!

I was able to turn them around get it open to discover I have 4 buttons that will not function. What crappy locks. Oh well. As the potential purchaser of one of these boxes (not for real estate use), may I ask: what kind of person would post videos such as this? It's a genuine question btw. Is it to help the manufacturer (in which case you would surely contact them directly and discretely), or is it to basically assist various unknown scumbags with their criminal activities? If the answer is that it's to assist genuine locksmiths, then surely they should know this stuff already or they shouldn't really be in the game?

    • @OakCityLocksport
      @OakCityLocksport  4 роки тому +7

      That's a question that all locksport communities are asked on a regular basis. It's to protect YOU. If you were going to be using a banking or email site, wouldn't you want to know if it had critical vulnerabilities that would allow someone to steal your money or your private information? I bet you would. The point here is to educate consumers on the relative security or insecurity of the locks you rely on. If you see it here or on other channels like Lockpicking Lawyer or Deviant Ollam then chances are you won't buy it. If you're in the market for a consumer box I recommend the Kidde AccessPoint 001012 key box with the combo dial on it. I do not work for or represent them, but the seem to have the best solution at this point.

      @@OakCityLocksport Thanks for the considered reply. It was a bit of a rash post which I should probably just delete; I apologise if it came across as rude. I've just realised that there's a kind-of community of what I would call 'lock enthusiasts', which I didn't know existed. If that's their/ your thing as a hobby, then fine. My worry is that experts such as locksmiths and the aforementioned enthusiasts can break into any product, so if I were to start researching it, I bet virtually all reasonably affordable locks and safes are vulnerable. And by affordable I mean that I'm personally prepared to pay more for quality, but obviously I couldn't stretch to paying £1000 for a safe just for home use for instance.
      Do you guys ever posts when you *can't* break into a product? I was thinking about getting myself a Squire SS65CS Stronghold Moto with Mauer A440 R1 core at some point in the future, thinking it to be one of the strongest locks on the market, but I can almost guess what's going to happen if I research it now! BTW, it would be quite helpful if channels such as yours could recommend alternative products, although I recognise that if you were to actually do that, it may be that only a few products would be on your list for ages, meaning you're doing the relevant company's marketing for them, for free.

    I’m lost... will someone tell me WHY anyone would post instructions on how to defeat a form of security ? As I see it, those who post these how-to videos only serve to educate thieves, but I’ll try and give you the benefit of the doubt and assume (for now) that you do have an ethical foundation - at least for now.

    • @OakCityLocksport
      @OakCityLocksport  3 роки тому +2

      Darryl, thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt, and please be assured that I have the best intentions and ethics in mind. Your reaction is pretty common for those who get exposed to lock picking and lock decoding for the first time, so please allow me to explain. First off, thieves are more likely to just smash a window or bust in a door than use a technique like this. They don't care about non-destructive entry. Second, there is a large "locksport" community that does this (that we're a part of). Besides having fun with what is essentially a "puzzle", our goal is to educate consumers on the relative security *or lack thereof* of the locking products they rely on every day. We'd rather you as a consumer know that something has issues than expose yourself to additional risk. Believe me, a thief who IS interested in non-destructive entry already knows this stuff. Also, if it finally shames the manufacturers into fixing their products one day we might have done some additional good. Think of the locksport community like the Consumer Reports folks who find things that are unreliable or don't work as intended.
      To look at this yet another way - my "day job" is working in the Application Security industry, helping fortune 100 companies find security holes in their websites and mobile applications. Applications today are not all built "from scratch". They use a combination of custom written code and common components called "libraries" that are like building blocks. These libraries are "open source", meaning a team of volunteers has build them to do a specific function. Developers use them so they can build and app quickly without having to re-invent the wheel. Occasionally those folks publishing a library make a mistake, resulting in a security bug. If someone finds that bug hopefully they report it to the library creators, but in many cases the library creators don't do anything about it, or they're not around anymore. Reporting the issue publicly to the National Vulnerability Database is important then so that everyone knows about it and can update their code. If it wasn't published then criminals could find and exploit those holes not just in one company but in hundreds or thousands of them! Publishing vulnerabilities keeps everyone safe.

      Most thieves will just break your window or door, so in the end it doesn't even matter, so get off your high horse. Seriously, it takes 2 seconds to break your sidelight and reach through and I guarantee that 99% of the time the neighbors won't even notice, let alone look into it.
      As I always say: "Locks are for honest thieves".

      In my situation, a lock box was put on a property and the code was forgotten. Simple as that. Need to get in to take photos and put on the market.

    Here’s some advice your videos are like a low quality version of Lockpickinglawyers you should watch a lot of his videos and break down what he does and why. And then you need to figure out how you can do your videos in a more original way and or in a better way. It’s a simple as that.

      Or you can just go away. LPL doesn't own the whole of the UA-cam and no one is forcing you to watch.
