Very interesting. I worked for Diebold in the early 80's as an electronic tech working on ATMs and drive up banking equipment, but part of our training was lock picking and how to defeat certain mechanical dial locks, ie, teller drawers and such. The safes, from floor safes to bank vaults, on the other hand, if the customer was locked out, the method of opening the safe was a long and tedious process of drilling out an access hole to get at the locking mechanism. I remember a "lock-out" on a Diebold floor safe at a local A.B.C. store (manager was the only one to know the combination - dumb move - was shot and killed) that took about 3 hours to finally open. The time consuming part was drilling through about 4 layers of case-hardened steel and cement, and took out about half a dozen high dollar drill bits. I'm not sure what type of cement it was but it was harder on the bits than the steel. What are your thoughts on Diebold safes?
@@3DPDK "Diebold safe are great until they make a Walmart version", was said in jest. The point is, good quality products may not be so good when they are made more cheaply, with less quality, and sold at high volume stores such as Walmart. (Walmart is a high volume store, among others.)
Im currently an apprentice safe tech at Eugene lock and safe in Oregon. I saw and old fashioned diebolt safe the other day when I was at a job delivering an American rebel. Cement bottom and everything! It was only grade B burglary but I still would’ve loved to practice drilling it
Wow. Speechless. Is this still applicable to the SentrySafes sold today like on Amazon? If so, does it also work on rotary combination locks also? Trying to buy a safe that's most secure. Can you please recommend a good safe? Also what model is the deadbolt? Thank you!
This is particularly funny because I just saw the BrandMade episode of how these garbage safes are made! As I watched I knew that these things would be easily defeated in non destruction attacks carried out by professionals but little did I know that the defeat would be an absolute rout! Thank you for your excellent advice in warning consumers to avoid these lockable garbage cans. Subscribed.
I have a cheap one with a giant medieval looking key that looks like it came from Winterfell - there's no way a magnet is opening that. But neverthelss SOME body found out how to open it when i was gone, came back and somebody had put a bullet in the chamber of my AK, dropped the hammer then put it all back together. Its impossible to do that by accident, meaning they wanted to show me they could break into the safe anytime. But my maintenance people of the apt. were all our friends from south of the border, all of whom teach each other to pick locks by age 4 just for a hobby, so i took that into account. When you rent an apt, this always happened and no exceptions, be 100% certain that maint. people WILL enter your premises when you're gone, for no legitimate reason whatsoever just to poke around your shit, and some will even have the gall to leave "CLUES" just to show you they can come in anytime! So its always fun to leave things for them to find too, to fuck with their minds also...let your imagination run wild here folks, it's only fair.
My $2000.00 gun safe which was stated to be hack proof and pick proof would also fall under your decor description as well. Got nickel and dimes so much by the local crooks even the law got in on it. Got away with a nice mint coin collection. Shame there is no truth in advertising 🤔

Robert Maybeth....I know your reply has been sitting here awhile but I have let folks know that you dropped some serious truth here. A lot of our friends south of the border has acquired special talents while attempting to go back and forth. Don’t get me wrong, the majority of the long term residents were hard working people but it was their guest who were transients that caused the most problems....most of the times it was the younger ones. Also, where I lived it was the maintenance crew who would wait and get into stuff when everything became quiet. They cleaned me out, watched tv and prepared lunch while I was away. They even got upset when I changed my locks and stopped buying their favorite foods. I love my brown and black brothers but I had to saddle up and get the Puck outta dodge. This is an ongoing problem and it doesn’t matter where you live...someone is always planning on camping out and enjoying stuff on your dime....and by the way that dime has to be adjusted for inflation 😲☝🏼

@@link6397 There's is a sharp price curve between magnets that usually occurs somewhere between the 80lbs and 200lbs magnets. Below 80lbs arent looked at as dangerous in most peoples opinions. Above 200lbs you start to see warning labels and directions to "plot your course of motion" as to not injure yourself. I'd say less than 80lbs is requird. I'd also say that
That's a cool trick! Probably useful to know when the batteries die. The important information is that it is a fire safe -- it will protect the contents for some period of time if the room is on fire. People are creative and no safe will keep people out forever. The object is to keep people out long enough. That safe is fine if you want to protect your will, powers of attorney, deeds, computer backups, and other things that are a pain to replace and easily damaged by fire. Expensive jewels and loads of cash are better kept in a safe deposit box at the bank. By the way, at the hotel, someone on staff knows how to open the room safe.

If your safe has a S&G 6150 or similar, the lock itself is pretty much impermeable to magnets. Your biggest threat is somebody never resetting the MASTER (not USER) code so the user code can then be bypassed using the factory master code default. Details of this can be found in 6150 manual. Clones work similarly.
Coming home, after days of absence, I saw a brand new, very nice looking wooden box next to my house with two very strong magnets in it. I made inquiries, but it belonged to nobody.... After your explanation I begin to think that someone left it there..... :-)

Hello Mr. Locksmith. Wow, that opened so easy. I'm in the market for a safe but it seems like they are very easy to open. The video I watched before the guy just cut it in half with a circular saw in a couple of minutes. What would be a good small safe to buy then?
The flaw in this safe could easily be fixed by replacing the solenoid with a plunger that is driven forward and back by a small stepper motor. Unfortunately, it might increase the production cost by one or two dollars.
Hey, one or two dollars isn't something to sneeze at! That's one or two dollars *per* *safe* , because we all know that no one is going to buy a $250 safe for $252!
Yeah because that's what Harry Homeowner wants to do when he buys a safe for good money is to then retrofit a plunger so that the safe stays safe....yeah
Oh and not just the plunger Harry also needs a stepper motor! I can see him walking into tractor supply asking for a stepper motor and a plunger to afford the safe the capability to actually protect your valuables that you trusted in a $250 safe. You'd hope a component to a kindergarten refrigerator art project wouldn't magically trounce your peace of mind in a box purchased from office Depot....
@@Therealrecoveringnarcissist - It is obvious from the context of my comment that the modification would be to the design, performed by the safe manufacturer, not by "Harry Homeowner".
I live in an apartment in a high metropolitan city. I don't live in a house in the burbs, so I can't do a $3,000 cabinet safe for conceal-carry and home-defense firearms. That being said, what are the top three choices for home safe in an apartment: nightstand, on the floor or anywhere, bedside, etc?
KALEL KALEL mechanical with a key or combination can't be opened with a magnet. Basically the magnet is effecting a solenoid on the inside which is basically a switch that flips by electromagnetic current. The rare earth magnet has a strong enough force to pull the switch closed without the electrical signal. This would essentially work on any solenoid. There are tons of solenoids in your car and other everyday things
My thought has always been that the primary line of defence for any safe is to hide it. Then, if 'they' do find it, make it difficult to access. Then (and only then) do the merits of the safe itself make any difference. Thoughts ?
The only vulnerability demonstrated here is the solenoid. It used magnetic force to actuate. There are many ways to electronically actuate that cannot be exploited with a magnet.
+Benargee-I think Mr. Lock's point was that millions of these Sentry safes are sold with the pretense that people are providing excellent security for their belongings when it is indeed not true. I think he is trying to let people know that if you're going to buy a safe, take the recommendation from someone like him instead of advertisement material from a safe company. I think he is also demonstrating the difference between a $250 safe and a $1000 safe...sometimes you get what you pay for. Also, he pointed out another critical flaw with this new "improved" safe in that it does not have a redundant interior hinge like the old version has. So, if you could pop the hinge pin out, you could open it that way, too. So he keyed in on two vulnerabilities in this video.
I've got two made in East Rochester, New York, Sentry Safes with the combo lock and key that are secure and work fine. Sentry moved to Mexico when ownership sold out to Master Lock/Fortune Brands in 2014, closing their American operations and moving to Mexico. The quality of the safes have never recovered.
I have tried this with our home safe of the same model and a strong rare earth element magnet and it took me 3 tries with each time taking me almost an hour. A stronger magnet or prior experience would have helped, but its not really as easy as it looks

This video is more than 3 years now. So, you're not able to open the safe with a strong magnet, huh? Because I was gonna buy one exactly like this and was so disappointed that it can be opened so easily.
My friend had the exact same looking safe, and we ended up getting in with what we thought was a different way. But now I'm wondering if what he said about shaking it is what we actually accomplished. It was about 5 years ago so was likely the old version he was referring too. Maybe it designed as an anti-theft method? A thief carrying away the safe might accidentally unlock it and dump all the contents on your floor!
So what's recommend for a good home safe that's got some water/fire protection that can't be opened with a magnet? Thanks for presenting this since I almost bought the Sentry
Just amazing, I find learning about this stuff is so interesting and fun ! I always like a challenge, or difficult puzzle, what could be more fun than opening something without a key,, fascinating!!! TY !
Quality has really gone down. Worked for Sentry briefly in the mid-90's in their sales dept. One day we brought up a safe from the manufacturing floor - similar to this one - but was bolted on both sides of the door and had a regular dial combination lock to it. Next to it - we brought in a similar competitor's safe. Laid it on it's back and with a couple whacks with a sledge hammer to the face of the competitor's safe - the door opened. Did the same to our Sentry safe and no matter how hard we tried beating the shit out of this poor safe with a 10 lb sledge hammer - we couldn't open it. In it's defense - this particular safe is really more of a convenience item to keep things from growing feet and walking away by less sophisticated thieves, but it's primary purpose is to provide protection of its contents from fires.
@B. Rippy It ain't going nowhere. I doubt any home burglars for a snatch and grab will be carrying a circular saw with them. Pry bar I'm sure they would have. It is in a corner of a closet so there is only two sides open to be able to cut and when they try to pry up the two sides they may have cut, the top of the safe will hit the wall and prevent any movement. I'm confident they won't get the safe. Thanks for the idea just the same.
@Lester - exactly. Fires... is what I've been posting. And you're right. We have a 1400... 4 bolt mechanical safe for 25 years. It has worked flawlessly.
I thought I was the only one who knew about using the Fonzie method to open my Sentry fire safe. I'm glad that I never wasted my money to upgrade to the digital version. Luckily for me it's more for fire protection than actual theft deterrence.
My cousin had an old safe from her grandfathers business. She had it in her house as a memento in her living room. Had a really nice old fashion paint job with the company name and other graphic's. Her house was broken into and they tried cutting the hinges and drilling it with tools from her garage. Totally ruined the safe. The bad part is she never locked it and nothing was kept in it. She figured no one would damage it if it was open and empty. They must have spun the tumbler before they tried the handle is all I can think of for why it was damaged. If you have one of these old iron safes put a note on it that it is open. Yes there are people that stupid in the world.
I’ve never been a fan a digital safes! I like the tumbler style better! I do have a digital entry safe and it’s easy to open but it just doesn’t feel as secure as the old school style
Don’t just rely on the safe’s lock. You can add multiple barrier locks that prevent the door from opening whether it’s locked or not and a host of other puzzle-like peripheral barriers that will deter a thief of opportunity and at least buy you some time and slow down a really good thief. Apply the mindset of making it difficult for even YOU to open your safe when you need to. Make it an unattractive target. If it’s easy for you, it’s a piece of cake and a matter of seconds for a thief.
One of my clients has a massive gun safe he uses for document storage. Inside that is a welded-in cabinet with a bowley lock cylinder. I wish I could see the look on a thief's face if they managed to get the main safe open only to discover the most unpickable lock with the most drill-resistant cylinder securing an armored steel cabinet.

Diebold safes are great until they make a Walmart version.
I don't think I knew they made units for retail.
Usually a masonry bit is used for concrete, that may be why it was ineffective?
@@3DPDK "Diebold safe are great until they make a Walmart version", was said in jest. The point is, good quality products may not be so good when they are made more cheaply, with less quality, and sold at high volume stores such as Walmart. (Walmart is a high volume store, among others.)
Im currently an apprentice safe tech at Eugene lock and safe in Oregon. I saw and old fashioned diebolt safe the other day when I was at a job delivering an American rebel. Cement bottom and everything! It was only grade B burglary but I still would’ve loved to practice drilling it

I did not enjoy finding out my $1000 gun safe is actually a decor piece, but appreciate the information.
@@robertmaybeth3434 ...had a guy lose his keys and there was someone supposed to show up to look at whatever was inside....by the time he was fumbling around for them I had the lock picked....his jaw hit the ground...yep it's that easy...

That's why my guns are stashed in hiding spots even police wouldn't expect, and my gun safe holds only cheap replicas and home-made fakes. Try to imagine the frustration of a gun-grabber cop when he tries to sell a realistic-looking toy to one of his drug dealer buddies!
Robert Maybeth....I know your reply has been sitting here awhile but I have let folks know that you dropped some serious truth here. A lot of our friends south of the border has acquired special talents while attempting to go back and forth. I too lived in a complex where by day most of these fine people were great people to know...but by night some of them would be host to friends that seem to come out of the wood work.
Can you open old fashioned dial combination lock safe just as easy?? And also with the magnet??

It's very interesting. One of my many hobbies. Thank you very much and God 🙏

Hello Mr.

+James Sanders -- I think I've seen those safes with an additional (barrel) keylock, now.
Thoughts ?
Hiding or concealing or even a big old safe with nothing in it is a good line of defense.
Which type of Safe would you recomend please? System, Brand,...

note to self... no electronic safe
+VampierMSX Lots of very good electronic safes made by S&G, LeGuard, SecurRam,
+Mr. Locksmith THANK YOU.
Mr. Locksmith this only works on the electronic sentry safes or does it work on the non electronic ones too?

This video is more than 3 years now. So, you're not able to open the safe with a strong magnet, huh? Because I was gonna buy one exactly like this and was so disappointed that it can be opened so easily.
Nope but their still easy to open and, if you buy one with a key you can open it with nail clippers.

Thieves can just pick up the whole safe and carry it away ... and pound the snot out of it at their leisure ...
Check Your Six except mine is bolted through the floor and a 1/4" thick piece of steel on the bottom side of the floor sheathing.
