      Ehh just use a strong simple to pick lock. No one is picking your lock to rob you... they are breaking the lock. Plus a simple to pick lock means you can get back in after you lose the key.

      They can be shielded to prevent this specific attack, but very few are. They could be hardened further with the addition of false gates and better precision in manufacturing, but how many people really would want to pay the price that entails for a combo lock.

    • @andyowens5494
      @andyowens5494 4 роки тому +17

      Relatively easy; make it to tight tolerances, out of the right materials, with appropriate guards around access points (hard materials, traps to catch tools etc), and if you’re feeling adventurous, build in a few decoys (anything that makes a pick or bypass attack take longer is going to put professionals off).
      E.g. for this one, if there were no flat spot, his attack wouldn’t work (but maybe the lock mechanism relies on that, so might be like using disinfectant to cure COVID-19 patients), but if you cant get the shim in then this attack becomes more difficult; a thin enough shim might not be strong enough to do anything. As for decoys, maybe allowing the shim in but having a steel guide to direct it off to a false parallel wheel with random offset from the actual wheel might be more challenging (there are better decoys, but who’d go publishing them).
      Ultimately, ANY mechanism can be defeated, if a) you know how it works, and b) you have time to play with it and identify its weaknesses. The key (pun intended) if to make the time required so long that its not worth the effort, and they pick another target.

    • @brunesi
      @brunesi 4 роки тому +10

      @@andyowens5494 yes, it's not unknown nor hard, but in general it surpasses the profit margin point.
      Well there are a few mechanisms that are economically not viable for tool picking, as the double... something... concealed core LPL reviewed. The price point is very far from these mass Chinese manufacturing, undoubtedly.

    • @abramthiessen8749
      @abramthiessen8749 4 роки тому +1

      One possibility, though it isn't perfect would be to use an optical mechanism to detect whether the combination is correct (e.g. a solid glass window that goes through all the wheels when in the correct position checked by an internal infrared LED diode at one end, and a photodetector on the other, with a knob to test and operate the latch (so that a servo isn't needed). With the knob passing through 3 positions, first locking all the wheels, then turning on the diode, then if the photodetector receives power, the knob is free to unlatch the locking mechanism.
      Most combination locks are picked by feel, so a mechanism which isn't decoded mechanically shouldn't be possible to defeat by manipulation. And requiring someone to operate the knob for each combination would slow someone down from a brute force attack.
      One main issue is that optical mechanisms require power for the LED and also for the latch, and if the latching mechanism is electromagnetic, it has to be very well shielded, or else have additional latches to prevent opening if a strong magnetic field is detected, but not if the regular latch operates.
      Another important thing to consider is that the optical mechanism has to be very well shielded to prevent someone from shining a remote control or just using sunlight at the right angle to activate the photodiode.

    At this point, I'm starting to believe that the LPL is the love child of Arthur Fonzarelli and Pinky Tuscadero, who was placed for adoption because motorcycles really can't do kid carriers. Thus, unaware of his genetic legacy, he grew up "normally", and eventually went to law school. One day, after a really shitty day involving a couple of 3L punks giving him shit for not getting a good internship lined up, he punched his door in anger, and the crappy res hall Master door lock opened immediately. A few more random incidents involving percussive maintenance and locking mechanisms led him to start exploring this unusual recurring coincidence. At first, he recorded his investigations mostly so he could show people he wasn't making this weird crap up, and someone casually mentioned this UA-cam thing.
    And now you know... the rest of the story.

We put the lock box and front of a camera with a good view of the person's face as they approach and have had success deterring and catching thieves.

    After watching this, I remembered that I had a combination lock that I’d lost the code to when I tried to change it but forgot how to properly do it. It’s been useless for several months, but after watching this I decided to try to pick it, inspired by this method. My parents don’t ever buy soft drink or anything in cans so using a strip like that wasn’t possible for me, so instead I used the smaller blade on my pocketknife. Was a little stiffer, maybe because of the thickness of the blade or the lock itself being quite small, but either way I got the combination done without any trouble. Thanks LPL!!

  • @alexanderduron5078
    @alexanderduron5078 4 роки тому

    Big thanks Mister! My studies make me spent most of my day at the hospital, at least before this when thing started. We decided to fix the lockers shortage by simply tagging with a piece of paper and a sharpie if a locker was taken. After two weeks we realized that almost half the lockers were left closed by the previous students. I saw a locker in a very convenient spot with a combination lock, all I had to do was to rewatch your video about it and that was it! I got a locker and a lock too!!! I don't really care about other people opening it since it has my name on it, and there are more lockers unclaimed with combination locks so it seems that people is just waiting for maintenance to open them.

    Back in the 1980s when I worked at a luggage store, the flats on the wheel locks was how we determined the combination if someone forgot theirs or, more commonly, if some jerk changed them on us and then locked it on the sales floor (usually they were straight up or the reverse number of straight up, and they were visible from the outside due to poor tolerances in manufacturing of the faceplates). Hard to believe I learned how to pick locks at a legitimate job when I was 19, harder still to believe there used to be actual luggage stores. Man, I'm old.
