These hidden maps were so charming back in the day. They added a such sense of wonder and discovery, like we had a basic map of the world but there was more than met the eye. It made it feel like we might be the first ones to discover some secret hidden away in a corner, made us feel special for knowing about the little niche corners that few others did. It's a design I wish the game could have leaned into a bit more...but oh well.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) the amount of easy access to information these days would make the existance of those maps not that special anymore ): This feeling can only live in our memories now. It was fun to discuss these stuff in forums or maybe sharing some new location to our friends in henesys, but now where comments, videos, insta messages through discord, guides and everything goes on so fast, would make it kinda dull, from my pov at least.
yeh, heading "above the treetops" just takes me back to that feeling of getting lost in in a forest off beaten path. brings me to tears just thinkin about it ;w;
Maps are pretty much just designed for training rotations and vac pets now. They could really spice up the towns, but alas most new towns are just plain flat ground with the dailies/weeklies, storage, and union/legion NPCs.
I have a memory I'll probably never forget at Pig Beach when I was a level 21 warrior in 2008 where we trained in a party there for at least half an hour and my buddy asked "ok how much exp did you get" and I said "about 10%" and he decided that was so slow that he quit the entire game right there LMAO
Pig Beach was the first one I ever found out about. I was so excited about it that I started pressing up in any location that looked like there could be a hidden portal. 😁
For me Slime Tree was the first time my mind was complete blown in this game. I vividly remember exploring Ellinia, and thinking to myself it would be so cool if you could enter these giant trees.. And then when I tried and it actually worked!? Then the game hits you with hands down *THE BEST TRACK* in the game! I climb throughout the tree to explore and there's a hole at the top, I try exiting and appear at the top of the tree I entered in the previous map. I could not contain my excitement! And I think to myself what if the game has more areas like this?
Our guild hideout used to be the secret house in the swamp... It had an obscure enough map name that even if someone did /find you, they wouldn't know where it was.
I ACTUALLY have a Teleport Location for the Old Forest of Golem on my Teleport Rock. I mean the monsters don't spawn anymore iirc. HOWEVER, I can STILL get into that map using a Tele Rock and it's pretty nostalgic to check out every now & then when i'm bored or hanging with friends & tryna showoff a LITERAL Hidden Street now that's been lost to the patches over time.
I remember there was an event bunker in the middle of kerning that closed when the event ended. I had found out the portal was gone but they accidently left the bunker and you could still enter it. Was such a cool spot to hangout felt like my own little hideout that nobody else knew existed
These videos are so nostalgic. They bring me back to early days of MapleStory when I was a kid with nothing but free time. Getting to know the game from Beta to post Big Bang era. Some years ago I returned to the game and tried the reboot server - it was awesome. Now I'm 32 with 2 kids and reminiscing nostalgic memories. What a joy. Thank you!
Don't wake me up. I just got off a 13 hr shift. Maybe if you got a job and helped contribute to the bills you'd understand the need for rest and sleep. I want you out.
What a great video, well produced and the extra touches like the storytime segments really reinforce the nostalgia. As someone who was fairly socially awkward and often played solo, there was something so peaceful about being in these huge maps that nobody visited and were often far off the beaten path; it was like having my own secret base. The ones I remember most fondly are Mushroom Garden, Damp Forest, and Fish Resting Spot, but there are so many maps any of us could talk about. I'm definitely looking forward to more episodes in the future.
I love these videos. Thank you. As nostalgic as these make me feel, I think more than anything these videos remind me that I just miss being a kid. Even if you play a OSMS server today it’s still filled with adults who have the “adult” mindset of efficiency and getting stronger as quick as possible. A lot less about the exploration. I miss my childlike sense of wonder and adventure haha but these videos help me remember some really great times.
Thanks for this video. one of the biggest things i miss about old maplestory were the hidden streets and the absolute sense of wonder and exploration it brought to the game. like who knows what else is out there! a secret boss? an npc with cryptic dialogue? a new mob with a unique drop table? the possibilities were endless
been playing a OSMS private server with my little brother who i played the original game with back in 2005/6/7 and so on. So fun reliving the nostalgia and lord knows we both get excited when a Togain video drops to watch while we grind!
It would be cool if you covered Urban Undergrounds - Badlands in a future video, it was available for like a day or two in the early days of New Leaf City. It created some amount of controversy as the only way to leave besides getting doored back, was to die. Only way you could only enter the area was via a priests door placed on the NLC side of the subway that connected Kerning City and NLC. Information about this area is scarce at best though.
Game Zone up to the left was where I traded items between my chars since Storage only had 4 slots xD Drop like 12 items, log out, log in and select another char and hope I didn't lag or d/c or the items were lost forever xD
22:40 In GMS there's a map like this in north Ellinia, at the end of the Evil Eye section. It has a reverse rotation though, you climb up a few "flights" of Curse Eyes and then just jump down and start over
During the 6th Star event, in the lead-up to 6th job release, there was a weekly mission to find fallen star fragments. One of them were down a lava pit in the Bain/Cerebes maps in El Nath. Otherwise, Risk of Rain, as well as Risk of Rain Returns, both have a portal by a fence in one of the variations in one of the levels, leading to Boar Beach. You find a Mother Hog boss there, that drops a non-journaled item "White Undershirt" with the flavour text "S>2m or offer@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@". It's one I always hope to find.
I remember laughing in Risk of Rain when I found the item Red Whip, which boosts your movement speed if you avoid combat. Desperate things were done for halfway decent movement speed in OSMS.
So the 'dummied out map' is the exit for Pig Beach. And given that the entrance is also dummied out my guess is the original idea was it was going to be a 2 portal map. You could enter from either side. Then the reduced it to only go one direction. I mean if you think about the snails and stuff at the top it makes sense. Snails at the top with a few pigs at the end. What a great starting spot for those 'in the know'
I love watching nostalgic videos like this. As one who has played MS back when the pirate job was first released many years ago, seeing stuff like this brings back such fond memories of those days.
There is a hidden portal on Maple Island! I believe the map was called Tomato Garden, which was at the far end of the island. Some Islanders trained there since it was mostly flat and new players wouldn't know of it.
Is that third do nothing portal in 3-way road split the location where you spawn in upon exiting pig beach? I remember coming out not exactly where you go in.
My favorite hidden street was on Florina Beach! There was palm tree that had an invisible block behind it. You jump up on the block and you'd end up behind palm tree sprite layer. If you press up you'd go to a hidden street!
the game zone was where id drop most of my equips/scrolls to my other chars when i didnt feel like doing multiple storage clears. felt very safe every time
It made me so happy to hear you mention Islanders! The Beginner scene is such an overlooked part of OSMS, but it had such a rich community. I gave up on my Camper pretty quickly (it was a little too boring for my taste,) but I had an Islander in addition to my main Beginner. By the time Big Bang hit, I believe my main Beginner was 74. It was actually a lot of fun, and group training in my all-Beginner guild was a blast. It’s less of a slog when other weirdos are in it with you :)
I loved exploring this game. I played a bandit, so I would use Dark Sight to reach places I had no business going to. I would brag to my other level 20 friends about reaching deep Sleepy Wood and seeing drakes and minotuars thanks to my 'thiefiness' lol. I even remember trying to hunt down Bob the Snail way down with the drakes before I hit second job. Any monster that had an actual attack besides touch damage would always one-shot me through Dark Sight though lmao. Those were the good old days.
One of my favorite places to go was the house in the swamps in Kerning. It's the place I went to cube during miracle times, and even was a guild meeting spot once upon a time.
Holy shit Pig Beach. I remember i was in like 4th grade and on an archer who was around level 16, and i had just ran out of pots. I stayed on a rope for like an hour begging newcomers to the map for a few pots so that i can survive the journey out of the map. Good times man, good times.
What I liked about the older maps are the unique assets actually. The windows at Pig Training Field for instance. The little weird windows tell so much stories on its own, to me. And it still gives me goosebumps to these days whenever I think about these unique assets and thinking how they don't do it anymore today.
Damn I didn't play Maplestory in it's really old school days (I played it when I was a tween in the early 2010s) and yet this somehow brings back a lot of nostalgia for me even tho I didn't have that same experience as yall as things came out slowly
L Forest maps were some of the most nostalgic maps. There was a time when it was normal for players to help guide noobies through it to reach Kerning from Lith Harbor. They werent efficient training spots but they were peak OSMS map design. They also followed pig beach in the way of having 1 or 2 high lvl mobs among mostly low lvl ones. Not only were there iron hogs but also lupins which made the metal pigs look harmless in comparison with their insanely high ranged banana throw ... I guess thats partly why they never took off as grinding spots
Oh I vividly remember Snail Field of Flowers. I think it had a couple of crates for the relaxer, and Europe having limited channels it was rough to get all the parts at first. So definitely checked it out a few times.
I started watching your Blaster Progression videos now, and I must say, from the bit of time(17 hours) I played Maplestory myself yet, I've not seen some of the Vistas you have been too, partially also because I didn't know grinding game was that common to do, I've been mostly just following some quest lines.
Not sure if this has been said already, but those "hidden portals" that lead to the nothing map are just spawn locations. It is essentially a one way door and the 99999 portal is where you end up after coming through the other side.
14:00 My guild once had a party game meetup at Henesys Game Park! We hung out in a discord call. and each gave a fact about ourselves. All the other players had to guess whether it was true or not, and the winner got a prize :)
I think the three way road split portal led to seasonal event maps during the limited times they were hosted, though I can't remember whether that was actually on GMS or on some of the private servers I played back in the day.
The pixie maps were legit. maps with enemy concentrations in groups of 4-6 weren't always so easy to find and this is especially true in early MS, but pixie maps were good on this. Good mobbing, decent exp, good drops, and the ect items could be turned in at the exchanger for some free pots, screws, dragon skins, and even a 60% cape int scroll for the luster pixie item. (extremely valuable) Of sold off to someone else for some good moolah who uses them to fast level a character. IMO they were a bit underrated even back in the day.
I could've sworn the hidden portal between the tomatoes on 3 way road was functional in MSE, but I could be mixing it up with a different hidden portal. I also remember farming family points by camping PB. It was really easy, you just bribed some lowbies by making them join your family in exchange for you killing the iron pig.
Togain. Our unofficial Maple Historian. Wonder if you'll ever do a video on classic desireable items. Panlids, red whips, etc. Keep up the good work on these videos!

Hey man i was really wondering how do you get the shots of maps with no players in it, but with moving mops and moving portals. Do you use so soort of admin tool
It's 2006. You just finished washing dishes and other after dinner chores. You parents are upstairs watching TV, reading, or whatever it is adults do in the evening on a Thursday night. There's no school tomorrow which means no homework, quizzes, or school stress. You boot up Maple and enter Pig Beach. Lucky! Nobody else there yet. You jump on ropes and message the buddy list. People you've never met in real life, but who maybe know you better than some of your real life friends. Suddenly, it's 9pm. You're ho-ing it up in Henesys like a proper Mapler. You anticipate someone coming down to tell you it's time for bed. But that's right. No school tomorrow. One of your buddies asks, "Wanna do some PQ?" And how could you say no? Life is good
@8:04 u mention a portal to 999999999 which to my understanding as someone who has spent literally DAYS poking around in the wz files, means its a spawn point.
Togain i always watch your videos, please do a entire map exploration of old dungeon/ sleepwood, it was huge back then, even i saw a video where you could found faust the giant monkey boss there. Greetings from Perú ❤
So this wasn't really a hidden map but I remember in the maple europe beta you could access the omega sector before it was released by dying on a certain floor in the tower that would later actually lead to the area.
im just trying to work out what that private server was that had the golden pigs at pig beach with unlimited flash jumps, you would rebirth approximately once a minute. Anyone know?
These hidden maps were so charming back in the day. They added a such sense of wonder and discovery, like we had a basic map of the world but there was more than met the eye. unfortunately once wizet sold out the gradual decline began.

Back then I remember getting to lvl 30 would be like a bit less than a month. Was no joke lol
Please never stop making these, my MapleStory childhood nostalgia is a pure, precious, and timeless thing
Pig Beach, Forest of Golems. Nuff said
mmmmmmmmmmm
Pig Beach was the first one I ever found out about. I was so excited about it that I started pressing up in any location that looked like there could be a hidden portal. 😁

There was one in kerning swamp, 3 maps over, where if you climbed on a certain vine it took you to an unused room titled “./“
I remember there was an event bunker in the middle of kerning that closed when the event ended. I had found out the portal was gone but they accidently left the bunker and you could still enter it. Was such a cool spot to hangout felt like my own little hideout that nobody else knew existed

Game Park was never the exclusive map for minigames, FYI. I remember the day the minigames were added, and they were usable anywhere. But, making the sets was much harder. I believe it was 333 or even 999 cards for the matching set, and 99 of each omok plus a table for the omok set.
I'd love to see Terra forest covered by this series, I never even got to go explore there before it was removed
Pig Beach and FOG was the top tier training spots back in the day!
wow what a great video. awesome. What did you use to make the cute little graphics and animations with the screenshots?
This is so goooood, waiting for ep2
Should talk about golems temple and the maps below sleepywood. Those are classic.

I thought it was Risk 1 that had Pig Beach ?? It’s in 2???
Could you do a video explaining the story and the lore of Maplestory all the way up to present day?
New Togain banger? Let’s go!
I really wish hidden areas were a more common thing in mmos, such a wonderful feature
5:50 jm from the streetz can also craft minerals and materials
"Yea I've been here before"
Literally 5 seconds later
