Understand I’m not a lawyer nor have I played one in a movie the things I talk about in my videos are strictly for conversation or entertainment purposes only!
Who tf cant run a bead sight? I learned that when i was literally 5
Your 4 yo self could not
You have to think about it like this
Where is the population density (intercity)
Do most people on the intercity have an opportunity to run a Bead sight
I've got a Mossberg Newhaven with a bead sight, and an RIA VR 60 with ghost ring. Being an inner city kid whose primary exposure to sights was Call of Duty, ghost ring was more intuitive. Not that the bead was difficult to figure out, but I had to look it up on the google machine where as the ghost ring I already knew how to operate out of the box.
Right on
@@CRSFirearms yah probably not, but it seems way easier to understand to me personally
@@Rhymer3 Yea me too. They're easier than ghost rings to me. Can see more and way quicker. Its self explanatory. Ghost rings aren't hard either, just more to line up in the way.
This isn't the greatest shotgun video in the world, this is just a tribute.
You gotta believe me, I wish you were there
Be ye angels?
And we said nay, we are but men!
I love the mossberg 590 I wanted a 590A1 but at the time I couldn't find one anywhere but my 590 has been really reliable and It's perfect right out of the box
Same here .And I have to have the bayonets lug !!
None of the popular sites have it in stock.
The 590A1 is a bit heavy with the barrel. Side note: I need some muscle.
You can buy the metal trigger guard the metal safety and a heavy barrel and a bayonet lug and then it's an A.1.
GREAT. NOW I SLEEP BETTER WITH MY TODAY' S 590A1 RETRO PURCHASE . YOUR NEAT Matt. THANKS. GEE, 37 country's military shotgun of choice is the 590a1 cannot be wrong. Just dumped a semi auto shotgun for the 590A1. Simple function, reliable, all metal construction
And all American made by an American company that never when under like horrid managed Remington.
As an Army Combat Medic we were allowed to choose our primary arm - Win '97, 1911 .45ACP, or M16. So I qualified on all 3 just in case. I grew up shooting my Dad's 1897 that he purchased pre WWII. The Mossberg is definitely the most useful for the reasons mentioned.
Mossberg 590 will run 2-3/4" and 3" shotshells equally well.
So will my 500
@@3wolfsdown702-- yes, essentially the same weapon with different capacity. Pretty much every Mossberg I've seen will handle both lengths of ammo.
@@lordphullautosear yeah mine is actually considered a pistol !!!! because it is a 18in pistol grip like the one in Terminator
@@lordphullautosear the best $90 pistol I ever bought
@@3wolfsdown702-- helluva good deal! 👍
It doesn't get any simpler than damn bead sight. Not only that but it's a good bit faster as well. Been using one all my life.
An interesting point on the M97 and I may need to be checked on this but I believe if you hold the trigger down you can fire it by pump action alone. It was used as a "trench gun" in WWI that way (much to the chagrin of the Germans who wanted to make it a war crime).
Trench guns were used in WWI, in the trenches Europe. Awesome close quarters tool. Anywhere within 25 yards, that isn't a rat hole, give me my 590, I'll get the work done.
Yes they were called slam fire
@@N0B0DY_SP3C14L Europe may soon experience trench clearing again.
You could do the "Slam Fire" with the older Ithaca pump shotguns. I don't know if Ithaca ever changed to where you couldn't slam fire but if they did I don't know what year it would have been
Where's the Remington 870? We had them in the air force.
Remington is better then mossberg. It’s stupid, really.
I would take the Mossberg 590 A1 Everyday and twice on Sundays!
Have fun trying to find one
You dinged the Benelli for clearing a "click-no-bang", because the bolt would lock back when you manually cycle it and you would also have to press the release button on the side. When you have shells in the magazine (you did not) dropping the hammer will cause a feed, and then the bolt will fully cycle and chamber that shell when you pull it back after a dud shell. The only disclaimer I have is that my experience is with an M1 Super 90, but I believe the drill is the same for both.
I like this guy!!!
Pump action will always be more reliable but I’m taking the benelli all damn day. I haven’t experienced the problems you have but still she’s ran everything I put in her. M4 the win! Never as a primary weapon tho.
Nice video , a bit lengthy , but justifiable to cover the features and functionality of these fine shotguns.
I have the 590A1 retrograde and the 590 Thunder Ranch ( with breacher barrel, it’s a little workhorse that stays in my pickup truck ) … yep , they’re so good I had to have both !
I got a helluva deal on my 590. Police trade in with surefire forend and olive camo cerakote for $325. Most police I am told hate using their shotguns so they tend to not get very many rounds through them.
I have a 590a1. Love it. Worked great right out of the box.
Anyone who has ever done any real-world work with a shotgun will tell you that, ghost ring sights have no place on a shotgun.
Agreed. Quicker and more intuitive to look down the receiver and barrel and put the bead on the target.
The military only uses ghost ring sights so there is not so much a training curve when training someone on the shotgun from the m4
Learned on bead sight and never used anything different.
What’s your problem dude ?
Maybe if you want more precise aiming with slugs?
The 3.5 shell came about in 1988 by Federal with the Mossberg 835 being the first shotgun with that chamber!
I bought my M-590 in the early '90's, for $279.00 (new), with the bead sight. Bought a H&K/Benelli M-3 Super 90 in '94(?) For $850.00.
Have never had a problem with either one, though in semi-auto mode, the Benelli requires 1 oz. or better loads, to cycle properly.
Bought my second M-590, an A1, a year or so ago, also for $279.00! This time used, but like new (fired once?), and this time with ghost ring sights.
I love both shotguns, but the M-590's just fit my 6'3" frame as if I had them custom made for me - arm reach (both arms), and balance, are both perfect for me, right out of the box. The M3S90 also feels really good, but it's just not the same. As I said, I love 'em both, but if I'm going to spend a day plinking, I tend to grab a M-590 more often than not.
Am coming into a Franchi SPAS-12 before the year is over: can't wait to compare them...
I knew the King of Shotguns would be the Mossberg 590A1 BECAUSE it was the first shotgun this wise old gizzer bought.
I 2nd THE MOTION 🇲🇽🤠🇺🇸 because my 1st was m.b.500 when an old guy told me up grade that to
590-A1. now I am an older
guy & I still choose 590-A-1 even with kal-tec shotgun..🇲🇽🤠🇺🇸
@@velvetbrick428Agreed 100% The 590 is so sturdy you grab that thick barrel and swing like hitting an AMERICAN HOME-RUN. Be careful, you'll still need to dodge 7.62 X 39 boolits get to 1st base.
I have experience on all 3. The benelli m4 is the best COMBAT shotgun. Guess I have a learning disability.
Just bought a Mossberg 590 (couldn’t find an A1 model) and already got a Surefire DSF for it. Very good quality for sure!
The king of the combat shotgun is the cheap but effective Akkar Churchill pump with an 18 1/2 inch barrel and a plus 2 mag extension. Because...that's what I've got. Gotta say, the thing runs and runs and fucking runs. Never had a problem with it ever.
Pump actions will obviously always have the advantage of sheer ammo variety, but there are several good automatics now that'll eat anything one can reasonably expect of them. My V3 has only ever stalled out on stuff that's specifically labeled "low recoil." Otherwise anything from 3" turkey magnums to cheap 2¾" target loads run just fine. As long as you understand automatics are what they are, don't buy a junk brand (go ahead and make your Remington jokes but everything they made at the end wasn't trash) and test ahead of time what it'll cycle just as you would test its pattern, you can have all the reliability you need. Personally I think shotguns are like rifles, why have just one kind? Different tools for different jobs. Get a pump and an automatic and learn to run both.
I’m not bragging, buuuuutttt I have a great 590 pump, but I have a beretta A4 28” extreme plus, super low recoil system ,dual bead sights, holds 10 w/mag Ext , will shoot any ammo even 3 1/2 magnum;;;; 1,700$, mag Ext extra
Did he ever say why the 870 wasn't included in his list? Maybe he just doesn't own one.
Nothing like a beautiful Mossberg especially the 590. You don't fix what isn't broken.
“It’s a niche tool.” You’re a niche tool…. Just kidding bro, couldn’t resist.
I love my mossberg 500 20 inch barrel and mag tube. It quick feeds and never jams!!👌
One of the first shotguns I got to shoot was a percussion cap shotgun. I know what you're thinking, I'm old but I'm not THAT old. My dad had one. I'm not sure if he over or under loaded it but it felt like it broke my shoulder. Shortly after that the gun got retired to a mantle piece.
All officers respond to a security alert on ship. I always grabbed a shotgun in addition to the m1911. Shotguns are perfect for fighting in the interior of a ship.
I’m a shotgun guy. I have an AR but my main home defense is a Mossberg 12 gauge. I keep a .357 magnum in my night stand. I keep my shotgun by my bed. With kids and my wife in the home I want a threat to become incapacitated as fast as possible. When I’m out and about and need to carry a truck gun ….I take my AR. The shotgun in my opinion is the best home defense long gun. It will put someone or something on the floor faster than anything.
I have the 500 in shockwave configuration for home defense. The 590A1 in so many uses from range time to shooting slugs or 00 buck and no jam and low maintenance. Gun broker has many shotguns for your choice. Great research video.
Best shotguns the mossy Persuaders w Classic m4 style shotgun stocks, get a medium slip on Walmart limbsaver, drill 1 hole at the bottom and ziptie far better than any SGA🤣for speed cqb w stock full collapsed your grip is away from your face, off shoulder or chest the POA is fast and dead on, cut pool noodle/pipe insulation in half zip and tape makes a great cheekriser
Thanks for posting this! I started watching it then it went "private". Regardless of which examples anyone picks, this is a good test and gives folks good criteria for picking or evaluating their shotgun. PS You can get a Mossberg 590/590 A1 with a simple bead sight. Benelli, for some reason, doesn't offer short barrels with beads on any of their tactical models.
because rifle sights let you hit stuff outside of 20 meters
"heh, ayup, I'can hit a beer can out ta 30 paces (or 10 of my wife, tammy) wit a bead. no sir ain't never had no need fer a fancy pants red dot or even raifle sights. Shotguns are just point an shoot mayn"
holy crap navy seal? from 1984??? insane!!! red dots sure were popular back then
@@rustys.1070 The Shooting Illustrated article was written in 2018. And the Yeager video I shared was made a year ago, but you do you.
Awesome presentation! You convinced me to stay with good old beads like dads 1960 A5
Haven’t had a malfunction in my Remington model 1100 for like 20 years it’s extremely reliable but it’s got wood on it lol
Remember also as far as power, muzzle energy and velocity goes the semi-auto is going to steal some of that power to cycle the action. Maybe negligible but there is a reason bolt- action rifles are still a thing.
I get semi automatic shotguns absorb some recoil but I’m afraid I didn’t get your point on bolt action rifles.
@@mattwalters6834 same concept, they're superior to semi automatics in every single way but rate of fire, and usually capacity as well....although there are some mag fed bolts that have some impressive capacity.
Attended my son’s graduation from Navy boot camp in Illinois (4/2022). Mossbergs were carried everywhere including the front gate. Niche roles only?
Running point through bunkers or clearing a house, give me the 590 with a bead and a strapped talon grip, strapped foregrip, and a bayonet. Oh wait, I've already got one. ;)
I just picked up the berreta 1301 tactical gen 2. been seeing good things about it. Hopefully it runs well,
Nice
I have a 24" Benelli SBE w/extension tube fitting 9 rounds In the tube with chrome lined barrel and bolt. Best all around shotgun ever made!
I prefer a bead sight but I hunt birds it would suck shooting a moving target with ghost sight's I agree to this video you covered why I stick with pump action over semi auto
The first time picking up a shotgun. It had a bead sight, and I hit 10 out of 10 clay pigeons.
And all that opening and closing and didn't pinch a finger ,,way to go
Hahaha
I have a Mossberg 590 Mariner with the Marinecote barrel, they're hard to get. I've read that the US Coast Guard buys up most of them. It's a 8 plus 1 with a 20in barrel, my favorite shotgun.
Hmmm my Remington 870 is pretty darn good too, never had an issue with it
I have a newer 870 and it runs fine, too. I have heard that Remington quality went down a bit but they still run
@@donaldmack2307 I have had mine for about 40 years, great gun
I’d think the bead vs ghost ring would be personal preference, if you’re using both eyes open, it shouldn’t obstruct your field of view. I’d also think you could do it quickly with practice like anything else, they are good for me because I got a big head. I think the shotgun is more than a master key in military use; they run buckshot for humans but they have a special ceramic breaching round… for breaching.
Free @CRS!!!!……….
Great Video, I like the way you broke the shotguns into the different rounds and categories, Ace to the Face.
Appreciate the video Matt. This will help a lot of people actually. The way you are easily relatable, I think you would be successful teaching classes. You break down thing to where they're easily digestible for people to understand. Plus you have the famous "white board of knowledge" ! 👍🇺🇸🐍💪
How come the Remington 870 wasn't included? Was it not used by the military?
"Learning disability" LOL! You're the best, buddy!
I've been using my winchester 1300 defender cynthetic for 30 yrs still runs great
Chokes are not useless for slugs and buckshot. I have a factory black 870xcs marine magnum 2007 model, the 18in barrel is choked and there’s no way I’m leaving the cylinder bore choke in it for 2-3/4in 00 buckshot haha, and also they made rifled slug chokes so ya chokes are definitely not useless for slugs and buckshot just saying 🤷🏼♀️
I’ve been experimenting for the past 2-3 months with regular 00 buck and federal flite control and hornady critical defense, buckshot chokes actually cut the spread in half when comparing cylinder bore with buckshot choke with regular 00 buck. Of course the flite control is best with cylinder bore
Remington 870 gets my vote .
There was a former UA-camr named Mr. Lock and Load who was a U.S. Marine who returned back to the U.S. in 2008-2009. He had a lot to say about shotguns.
He thought the 590A1 and what he called the super 90 was the go to shotgun. Him and his friend unhappy camper made a lot of good videos.
I think he lives up there near you and you might have a really good conversation with him on this topic.
What's your opinion on the SKO shorty? I wanna pick one up this weekend. 😩
Why didn't you mention the Rem 870 btw? 🤔
The topic of this video is only official combat shotgun (ie used by US military).

Not yet
I have a feeling (and i'm not to the end yet) that you picked the 590 long before you did the evaluation here... : )
Thank you for taking the time to put some real knowledge out there.
M97 was the smoothest shooter shotty I've ever owned.
What do you think about the Mossberg 590M?
This is a textbook example of confirmation bias
I've always had Remington and moss birds I never had issues with neither one I would never own a banelli everyone I have my friends have had 1 and they have all had tons of problems and had to spend more money into them whether it was a huntinggon or a or a fighting gun you couldn't just buy them and go use them you always had to do something to them and then they would be the 1st ones to have issues Just out of the Box and as we were shooting I think there's a bunch of banelli fan boys
I’ll have to check out Moss Birds, never heard of them 😉
Man you need to go back to 3rd grade for some spelling lessons.
Highly recommend keeping the bayonet on a 590 for home defense. It can do wonders to ensure weapon retention.
You forget about close quarters, urban room clearing and the 509A1 is the tool for up close and personal with the bayonet. OOOrah!!
What if you get wounded and need to stay in the fight. I think pump guns could be more difficult and slow if you are injured.
It’s the Benelli h2o m4. That’s the overall winner. Specifically pump? It’s the Remington 870 marine magnum. Good news, you can get one for the same price as a 590a1 retrograde at buds. I got one for 815, never getting rid of it.
The military shotgun the master key!
Thay would be cool to see a video on one of them in the future
More gun reviews please. I think your good at them.
Love to see used gun stuff, things to look for when buying like firing pin on G22 police trade ins. That sort of stuff

why care about the striker* on a G22, if it's bad you just replace the damn striker assembly in all of about 3 minutes, not a big deal.

I had a 590A1. That thing was a MONSTER. It easily ate any 12 gauge ammo you fed it. Love Benelli for semi auto.
I call my 590 "The Pork Chop Express" named after Jack Burton's truck in "Big Trouble In Little China" because it just flattens shit like a semi. Ghost rings speed feed stock streamlight. It's ridiculous.

25:43 You can get a little rubber block that fits in the loading port of the 590 to enable the use of very short shells.

Pretty big on superlatives there
Since the old one came down, I should re-ask, "What do you think of the Browning Auto-5?"
the auto 5 is ok its smooth and easy to shoot because its recoil operated, that said you cant run low brass in it because its not enough force to cycle the action, other than that the furniture it archaic and you have no options for modernizing without extensive gunsmithing.

Maverick 88 is a diamond in the rough
I'll agree with the end result 590A1 is a great shotgun!
I probably would have given a few more points to the benelli myself but can't knock you for your scoring.
Hey, Matt.
There's a couple things that you didn't mention or were directly inconsistent with.
First and, kind of a side note, the Mossberg has an available adapter which allows it full use of the mini-shells. These shells are great for close quarters because you get more rounds in the tube yet they have sufficient power to get the job done at closer ranges and they come with buck or bird shot.
And your statement that the 590 has only two roles... Special teams employ a shotgun operator in a squad, especially in urban/close quarters because of the versatility of round selection and because of the overwhelming firepower in a situation where you don't want the badguys to have a moment to recoup and return fire as there's often just nowhere for you to go...
Taking 8 or 9, .30 rounds to the body, simultaneously, is a good way to be sure you can move to the next target without much apprehension. lol
Most every platoon/squad in Vietnam had a shotgun operator. The close proximity of jungle fighting and suddenly engaging the enemy at those ranges just let it shine.
Secondly, when you talked about speed, handing the weapon to another shooter and follow-up speed of the second shot, you stated that some people can use a pump "almost" (open for interpretation) as fast as a semi-automatic. The issue I have with that is that, when cycling the pump action, the sheer physics of what's involved pulls you off line with your target. Even if you're experienced and can keep your eye on the target, then move the sight back on target after introducing a new round into the chamber and you can do so "as fast as possible," there's just no way that you can take a follow-up shot as quickly and smoothly as with a semi-auto. That's the whole premise of why they were designed.
Once the first shot is taken, you need not engage in any motions which will disturb your grip and aim of the weapon. Only the recovery from the recoil causes any delay of reaquisition of the target and that's marginal compared to a pump action because your eye stays focused not just on the target but on the sight, as well. You need just wait for the sight to fall back onto the target and fire at that very instant.
Also you have the adrenaline factor when using a pump action weapon.
When you're "in it" and the adrenaline is flowing, it's really easy to miss-time your attempt at operating the pump. You try too soon or late, you may "short stroke" the pump and fail to introduce a new round completely, forcing you to operate the pump again, etc. Even you, in this video, when operating the pump "miss-fired" and tried to operate the pump at the *same time* you pulled the trigger (it's there, if you're paying attention @ 31:30) which slowed you down, though very briefly. 😉 So, the semi-autos are always going to dominate the speed category, no matter how "good" the pump operator may be (presuming an equal level of proficiency on the part of both shooters).
Thirdly, you dinged the Mossberg for having ghost ring sights "because that's what mine came with but, yes, you can change the sight." Then, you talked about barrel type and chokes and added a star because "I could change the barrel to a choked barrel." With that logic, you should have added a star because you could change the ghost ring sights for a Holosun 535 and been ahead of the pack. There were just some contradictions in your ratings that could make the argument that this is *not* the final decision/video for shotguns because, more consistency would change your scores and maybe which comes out on top.
There's one combat shotgun you left off the list, perhaps for availability but, it's king to me (along side the 590A1) and that's the Benelli M3 convertible shotgun.
Benelli looked at the Franchi Arms Spas12 and said "We can do that... And ours will work...") 😆 (The Spas12 rated high on the cool scale, due to styling and exposure via movies and TV but, it wasn't the most reliable. Benelli fixed the bugs and produced a much more dependable shotgun.
What is a convertible shotgun? Whether Spas12 or M3, they can function in either pump or semi-automatic mode, simply by the throw of a button/control.
With the M3,when the action is in semi-auto, it fires all heavier loads with no issues. 2-3/4" to 3"magnum shells.
When in pump mode, activated by a control at the end of the foregrip, it will cycle all lighter loads that may or may not function in semi, including less lethal rounds such as rubber slugs or beanbag rounds, which won't cycle most semi-autos. This also allows the operator to effectively clear the shotgun by switching to pump and working with the action more easily than using the charging lever in semi mode.
This system let's the operator use any slug type and weight, shot number or specialty round through one shotgun, taking advantage of the speed of semi-autos and the reliability of pumps. The training factor is not greatly increased, just some repetitions of each mode and the challenges they present, which would have to be addressed anyway, when learning on single operation weapons.
The safety features combined with ease of use (with satisfactory introduction) and versatility of round selection is the reason one sits beside me in my home. There are Clones available from Kahn Arms (a Turkish company of great rep.) via TriStar Arms which are much less expensive than the actual M3, work on the same, inertia operating system and function the same way.
The only problem with these weapons is availability/cost. They are more accessible and less expensive than the original Winchesters. Therefore, that should not disqualify it from contention, just as it did not disqualify the M97.
I'll stick with my winchester model 12 sawed off heavy duck. Open bore. Runs 3 inch. And can slamfire
