“People can’t imagine a father doing this with his son.” Indeed. I’d even add that people also can’t imagine what it’s like to be raised in a home that enabled such a thing. This wasn’t just a sexual abuse case, it was a mental abuse case carried by a father that literally everyone that came into contact with was terrified of. The mother enabled it. From experience, not only does the SA mess with your mind, the fact that the Mom allowed it might be the hardest part to get over. It shifts your understanding of reality, love, and trust.
My son is adopted.. I got him at 11 yrs old.. his dad raped him on the regular and his birth mom knew it was happening.. fast forward, he is 30 yrs old now and a productive happy human being. I acknowledged what happened to him, we talked it through for years but I never let him feel sorry for himself, I wasn't going to watch him become one big pity party.. the dad got 25 yrs, but only after SA 3 other members of the same family and the state took the parental rights away from him...
@Vanessa Monroe yes, that testimony was so raw. When the one brother apologized to doing the same thing to his younger brother as had been done to him, you had to be quite hardened to not feel the raw emotion there. I think people believed the narrative that they were just evil spoiled brats. Even though many employees and other relatives came forward in the media to say what a tyrant Jose was, the media kept highlighting stories of the spending sprees and such. If it hadn’t been for the money, the boys may have stood a chance
Actually that's a bit unfair to say, because their cousin had the letter and unfortunately he passed away in 2003. So his stuff was sort was put away and that's they didn't have the letters before
@@珊小妮33 I watched Menendez+Menudo documentary. No mention that their cousin passed away 2003. Still, He held on to the letter then for 15 years? While the brothers remain in prison. It's flabbergasting that the cousin and Roy from Menudo, the other rape victim, did not come forward sooner. It's been 33 years ! The brothers need justice.
The fact all the evidence and witnesses that proved the abuse happened was not admitted on the second trial was a total breach of the brothers rights to a fair trial. Shame on that judge and prosecutor. Free them!
Agreed! It's time for the masses to understand the psychological and emotional trauma that is caused by such egregious and long-term sexual abuse of children, particularly by a family member.
@@schoomzer Yes, it literally fractures somone's soul. They killed them in self defense, being threatened with sexual assault is just as criminal as being threatened with death. People askobg if the father "threatened to kill them" as if that was the only action that warranted a life threatening measures need to wake up.
It seems like it is not easy to get any fairly Trial today how come. Is it not given more fear if not knowing if it’s the right behind bar or if a murder is out there? Evidence not enough or?!
I know a man in his 50s who has been single and alone all of his life, because of the sexual abuse he suffered from his own father. He is so mentally tortured that he can not move on.
Completely awful. I've had partners who finally confessed to me about their trauma. It was so impossible to have a healthy relationship with them after years of trying because of their trauma. They were so emotionally fraught and volatile and I couldn't deal after a good long try. I do sincerely hope they are doing better and not alone :(. I HATE what their abuser did to their sweet soul.
Ummmm! That menudo guy stayed silent for 30 year’s! He probably needed money , now ! He got paid for this , obviously! Those Mendez brothers partying and spending thousands of dollars in the days after they murdered their parents! Why !? Did the kill their mom !? For the inheritance, duh
I joined Jose Menendez's company, LIVE Home Video, several months after he was murdered. Everyone spoke about how impressive yet intimidating he was, my boss herself telling me how much she hated him and had immediately suspected the boys were involved in the murders as she believed they were abused children. I remember her saying that she was sorry how Jose Menedez died but was nevertheless very happy that he was gone.
I watched a documentary about the horrific abuse they went through and there were actual witnesses in the house when one of the boys was screaming while being brutally raped by his dad. I don't know where all those witnesses were when the trial was going on. I pray they overturn their sentence, they've been literally tortured long enough.
Their cousin testified in their favor. But this case is deep and complex. It’s crazy to find out all the details of what happened and who was involved. Thank goodness Roy is finally ready to speak up.
This is the saddest failure in justice for these victims. They told their story and no one believed them. Now someone somewhat famous comes forward and it’s deemed worthy? Disgusting.
A lot of people believed them at the time, and a lot of people still do. The first trial resulted in a mistrial because the jurors could not agree to convict or to acquit. During the second trial, the judge limited the evidence that the defense could admit, which allowed the state to minimize the allegations of abuse, and they were ultimately successfully convicted. Many people were shocked by this, as their testimonies of abuse were captivating and moving.
Why !? Did menudo stay silent for 30 year’s! WHEN TWO 18 and 21 Mendez Bros were facing the rest of their natural born life in prison !? For this reason it is NOT A typical SA case ! Lives were at stake !! Lmao ! His testimony is laughable!!

To those who are pointing out that the brothers were of legal age to move out of the home: any type of abuse includes a type of mind control where the abuser convinces the victim they would never survive without them. If these brothers were abused from a young age to their legal adulthood, it absolutely makes sense to me why they’d still be in the home with great reluctance to leave. It’s the same concept of saying, “why don’t they just leave?” regarding an abused spouse. I am all for a second trial, or release based on time served.
Anyone in their right mind knows that if you murder someone for whatever reason besides self defense, you're found guilty in a court of law, it's life in prison. You don't get off for time served or the circumstances of abuse. It's like putting guns and knives in the hands of victims and its ok if you brutally murder them? It's not ok. You contact authorities, your family members, adult friends, clergy, your Dr, your neighbor, anyone who would listen. The back story to the brothers behavior prior to the murders is telling. They should serve out their sentences for what they were found guilty in the court of law for, the same as anyone else who chose to weapon up and blow away an abuser. Regardless of "the times", it's immoral and illegal to take someone else's life if not defending your own.
@@lolalovesme2987 I don’t think it was one sided. I couldn’t make up my mind. It seems he did it the 2nd time but he had already been railroad by law enforcement the 1st time, why wouldn’t they do it again.
Documentaries are opinion pieces crafted to make you feel one way or the other. They are not 100% truthful. It’s one side. They are murderers and belong in prison.
If this murder happened now, so way those boys would have gotten a life sentence. Gypsy Rose has now been released, she served like what, 7 years? And that was medical/physical abuse. It would be absolutely CRAZY if these men never get a re-trial or their sentence overturned.
Had to think about her too. It's utterly unfair how Lyle & Erik were treated by the court and the general public (remember the nauseating Saturday Night Live sketch?) in the 90's. Terrible things happen when the wrong people become judges.
It always seemed that the court and lawyers were more upset about how those boys spent their daddys money than wanting to hear about what their daddy actually did to them.
Many didn't believe the brothers were raped by their own father, because they relied on their own childhood experiences. Now, society may be ready to accept that SA of children can and does happen within families.
I absolutely agree. OJ is a monster and practically took Nicole's head off because of his jealousy..I don't agree that the menendez brothers should have killed their parents, but I can understand why.
When you have a set of Dream team attorneys to have your back of course your more likely to be set free. If Charles Manson had the money to hire OJ Dream attorneys, he probably not serving time either.
People might wonder why the boys didn't just leave home and go on their own, but it's not that simple. I lived with my parents until I was 24 because they used controlling tactics to keep me there. Whenever I expressed interest in leaving, my father would say, "Your poor mother! She'll be heartbroken!" which immediately caused me to feel like a selfish son, and my mother would say, "Don't you love me anymore?" or similar comments. My mother was a stay at home mother and homemaker and her kids were ALL she had. My father knew that, and would always resort to tactics to keep my brother, sister and I at home as much as possible to keep my mother company. Finally, I had enough guts at 24 to make a life for myself.
Glad you finally got out to live your life. God bless you 🙏 Stay strong. I'm sorry this happened to you and your siblings. Horrible thing to go through.
A good friend of mine recently shared that her biological father had been raping her oldest sister since she was 8-16. Her mother was out of town a lot on business( she had a big corporate job) and the dad took care of them. She remembered her dad calling the sister down late at night in a voice that sounded as if she was in trouble. She said she would fall asleep and not remember when she returned to their room. One day she went downstairs to find out what her sister had done only to see her sister completely naked sitting on the floor. When they finally told her mother, her mother accused the daughter of “seducing her husband “. My friends sister ended up running away and later ended up in a mental hospital. She is still not right to this day. Yes, people can be sick and abuse their own natural children.
I have never doubted the abuse. What they did was horrible, yes, but the abuse they suffered was horrendous, nobody protected them.. Their cousin also knew about it. I think they spend a lot of time in prison and they should be free now. They are not a danger to society.

I remember this case and i remember thinking something is definitely very wrong here and the two brothers seemed genuinely abused. So sad this happened to them... their lives were pretty much stolen away from them twice. Their parents stole the first half of their lives and the justice system stole the second half.
I agree. A year ago I'd read about the new evidence in this case. Before that, I just went with the official narrative that the brothers m urdered for money. I had not heard otherwise. I completely believe the boys were molested and abused. I think they should be released and receive the inheritance from their monster father and enabler mother, too. They should have only served a maximum of 12 years. They've had their entire life stolen from them. If I lived closer I would go visit them in prison. So sad.

I was saying the same thing. I was young when this all happened, and from the media, that told us about it. I never got this impression that it was this bad, as an adult. This is disgusting, and they should’ve never went to jail. This father did the unspeakable to his children, and their mom.. just sat back and did nothing. I know all too well how that feels. Although, I didn’t suffer this bad, it was still bad for me. And I just hope they can get out.
I agree. They were punished by the media and courts on top of their horrific abuse growing up. I remember the media making this seem it was about the money.
I'm ashamed to say I believed the media back then but now...I can see that not only did they free themselves from the abuse but they are actually heroic for standing up in court to talk about the abuse at a time when Nobody would of such things in their families. The father had a lot of money and was powerful. Prison actually could have kept the boys safe from the dad's connections. A weird twist of irony. Interesting as why two brothers would plot to kill their father. There was no money in it for them should they have not gotten caught? That's the bottom line for me.
This is absolutely one of the saddest case I've ever heard. If a stranger had committed just a fraction of what their father did to them...both men would have been not just acquitted but probably never even been prosecuted. Why is it ok to defend yourself from a stranger but not from a family member!!! Those boys were tortured from their father from the time they were children thru young adulthood...and then sentenced to a lifetime of imprisonment! Set these men free!!
Absolutely. And they were misread. Ok so they spent money after the murders. They were young, immature and finally liberated from abusers. They were dealing with ptsd and not making great decisions. They high-fived each other in court, again, it boiled down to being relieved that hell was over with and they were able to tell their story.
A father as a bully, and an abuser, has a devastating effect on young people. No question. It is horrendous. Give the time the Mendendez brothers have served for this crime, the case needs to be urgently revisited.
When I was four years old, a ten year old neighbor boy sexually assaulted me. My mother told me not to do it anymore. The boy continued to assault me for the next three years. I didn't say anything because I didn't want my mother's disapproval. 1954 - 1957.
I always asked myself why no one of the "Menudos" members never said something about it. Roy lives in Brazil today and he said something about it many, many years ago. He said that other members of Menudos were also abused by him.
@dgabster7953 they may be jealous of the boys get everything. And also I think their relatives not live in usa . Dad said one time his father sent him to usa by bus not giving any money.
Roy said that he lived with the guilt all this years of knowing that if he would had spoken up they would not be in jail. But from his stance, his trauma of having been “raped” was a huge thing and he “blocked it” and this is something that victims experience where they feel ashamed and go into denial. Roy was never the same and lived with the guilt of having been quiet.
@@studiosinger It also does not even make sense, because if the dad is abusing you, what reason is there for killing the mom? I always believed the Menendez brothers when they said they were mentally and sexually abused by their father. It’s awful to think about what those young boys had to endure.
The letter doesn't prove anything if the murder was premeditated. A murderer can just write a letter to someone else saying anything. That someone is beating them, molesting them, etc.
So, are they implying that sexual abuse excuses cold-bloodily gunning down two unarmed people in their home, watching TV? And why would a man's claim of sexual abuse be immediately believed, when women's claims are not?
The letter was not admitted in the first trial which makes a case for a new trial. They can authenticate the age of the ink and handwriting. There is also a band member of Menudo who stepped forward and let it be known he was raped by their father.
This is so tragic. The family member that withheld the lettet all these years is so ignorant. How could they not present that as soon as they discovered it? Hopefully, the brothers will receive some sort of reasonable restitution. Complete failure of the justice system.
@Joan Arc It is beyond soul-crushing to think that after years of being abused and being pushed to unimaginable lengths to save yourself, the _victims_ of the abuse would end up incarcerated. I hope something can be done for them even though justice will never truly be served at this point. Considering many of the high-profile cases in the 90s and early 00s, it is fascinating to see how much influence the court of public opinion had in a pre-social media world.
The PTSD that exists from being constantly in fear for your life makes you a paranoid, hypersensitive, adult that has trouble trusting people and forming close bonds with other people, among other things like nightmares, panic attacks, being quick to label people with only good intentions as phonies, etc. People who've never experienced this can have a hard time understanding that this kind of abuse does not end when the victim leaves the relationship or is in a position to do something even when the physical abuse isn't happening.

“People can’t imagine a father doing this with his son.”
Indeed.
The mother brought one of the sons into her bed and sex abused him, too.
Poor kids, growing up in these perverse households. 😔

💯 and similar to an abused spouse. Statistically, they stay because they’re afraid of retribution!
Anyone in their right mind knows that if you murder someone for whatever reason besides self defense, you're found guilty in a court of law, it's life in prison.

People might wonder why the boys didn't just leave home and go on their own, but it's not that simple. I lived with my parents until I was 24 because they used controlling tactics to keep me there. Besides that it would have been economic suicide to ruin their fathers career, the shame was too big. It would be the same if Barron Trump would go to the police saying he was raped by Donald Trump.
People would think it must be a weird anger issues of a spoiled brat.
When you see what they are trying to normalize in our society today, it makes me wonder if they knew they were innocent the whole time. They wanted to make what happened to them normal and make defending themselves the crime. Is that not what's happening today in society? They've been perpetuating and indoctrinating society in a very deceptive way for eons! Just more proof of it right here. 3 decades later and we clearly see that Jeffery Epstein, Royalty, politicians, heads of state and celebrities have gotten away with the same disgusting, vile, horrific crimes! Their attorney is full of 💩 if he believes things would have gone better for them in a court of law today! Seems to me they needed a better lawyer!!
RCA records executive. Everyone knows what they’re doing to young men nowadays. It’s a great deal of trauma. Time to clean it up
I believed them on the stand about the abuse and their fear. I think they’ve done enough time. Let them go.
Seriously. People get fixated on the brutal murder of the mother but she was complicit in the abuse.
@@dinolemma She never protected them. What they did was wrong; I don’t condone it, but they have been in prison for 30 years. They are not a danger to society.
I hope these brothers can get out with this new evidence. They’ve been there a very long time.
They didn't make it up there father was greedy and sick
Too long 😢
I hope their parents who committed these horrible abuses are burning in hell!!!! How could any mother allow anyone to abuse, especially sexual abusing her boys, 😠
I don't think they killed him out of anger. They killed him because they were terrified of him! They killed him in self defense. This letter proves it!!
Lol
I was terrified of my mother, who lock me in closet at 5yrs old and destroyed my life but yet I didn't kill her. At 15, I ran away from home.
They had other resources and planned the homicides. The dead parents are unarmed. Where's the self-defense?
They actually said they felt safer at jail than in their house!...Imagine the hell those kids went through...
@@yourkeysre being locked up in a closet sounds awful but not quite the same as being raped by your father hundreds of times while your mother allowed it...rape fractures people's souls to a different degree.
Always believe children first! Some desperate women will do anything to keep a man, including sacrificing their children. It’s disgusting but takes a lot of courage for a child to speak out. Kids NEED support!
I agree 💯
Absolutely
They were 18 and 21 ,they were not children!!!!!!
send the trial judge to prison for contempt of court
I think the Menendez Brothers should have been charged with Manslaughter, not what they got served with. The judge cheated the Menendez brothers. They were in complete fear of their lives.
I always believed the Menendez brothers when they said they were mentally and sexually abused by their father. It’s awful to think about what those young boys had to endure.
Problem too was that OJ Simpson case kill the momentum for the Melendez trial.
The letter doesn't prove anything if the murder was premeditated. A murderer can just write a letter to someone else saying anything. That someone is beating them, molesting them, etc.
That’s the first thing I thought of... weren’t they trying to write a script...?
Yeah they waiting all these years hoping someone would turn the letter in.
I knew them boys were always telling the truth. The parents got what they deserved. End of story. Now let them poor men out ...
I SAW IT ON THE BOYS FACES ON DAY ONE These boys were broken and what’s worse is their mother KNEW IT
I’ve always believed these guys! I pray someone truly fights for them & gets this case over turned, they’ve done enough time! Praying for them both🙏🙏❤
Amen !
So, are they implying that sexual abuse excuses cold-bloodily gunning down two unarmed people in their home, watching TV? And why would a man's claim of sexual abuse be immediately believed, when women's claims are not?
The judge needs to allow this abuse evidence. There were witnesses! They need to release these men! Where's the justice!!
Their testimony was riveting during the 1st trial. So awful. With the letter, they would be out of prison.
The letter was not admitted in the first trial which makes a case for a new trial. They can authenticate the age of the ink and handwriting. There is also a band member of Menudo who stepped forward and let it be known he was raped by their father.
@@dianazhora7357 I made a mistake. I meant if that letter was in the 1st trial. I hope they get out. This is a miscarriage of justice.
@Joan Arc Luckily they have each other for support.
You are exactly right. So few ppl understand. Very well phrased. I'm sorry for what you went through.
you couldn't of said this better. thank you so much.
@@savethedolphins99 I'm sorry I missed your comment. Thank you.
@@i.quit.lmaooooooo You're welcome.
Those two sons were driven by abuse to kill their evil parents . Set them free .
This is heartbreaking. Let them out. I believed them as sad as it was
I was born in 1986 and I was between 5 and 10 years old when this case happened. Later I became a health scientist from the first day as a small child until today 40 years old I believe they are telling the truth that they were abused by their father
I feel so bad for them. The 90's was such a bad time for something like this to happen. They were constantly made fun of ... Just like Lorena Bobbit.
you feel bad for them? how do you feel for their parents that they shot and killed? What does Lorena Bobbit have to do with anything? she was a nutjob too.
You are right. People saw Lorena's case as some sort of joke.
I saw and heard a social associate of Jose Menendez say that it was known what he was doing to his sons, but that the "Country Club set" felt that this was a private, family matter and that none of them should get involved.
No one condones murder, but there are mitigating factors here which cannot be denied. This "father" was abusing his sons and his wife retreated into a bottle and ENABLED it.
Agreed, it was horrific what the father did and the mother allowed it,they have done enough time they deserve to be released
Agreed! 👍
@@natashaferguson5425 They've paid their debt to society and once they are out, they can get spiritual counseling to be fully repentant.
@@factualbreakdown3072you want them to repent for killing a guy who repeatedly raped them? Ok then.
@Factual Breakdown THEY don't need to repent for a damn thing! they need to simply get out and live what's left of their lives...asap!
Too bad they went on a spending spree after they murdered their parents. If they hadn’t, they would have been found innocent.
Ahhh good point!!
Eric and Lyle have served long enough..the parents absolutely should never have had children
I think they need to be set free. All the people who said "their defense was the abuse excuse" were wrong.
I don't understand how the Menendez bros. got life when other people have committed multiple felonies and they have possiblity of parole when they finally kill someone
Their adult imprisonment seems to be easier to bear than their childhood prison of abuse
I remember this case. I believed the boys. I was terrified that they were sent to prison. I have heard of women in prison possibly on death row for defending themselves from their abuser. It's unbelievable. Why!
I'm in awe at how strong Lyle and Erik are. They are truly survivors. I only hope and pray they can get out of prison soon and live the lives they deserve with their loving wives and extended family. They have all suffered far too long because of this injustice.❤🙏
So glad they’re getting another look, I felt it was unfair back then when their defense was limited to what the Judge felt was allowable…travesty really!
Wow! Never thought of this happening, but damn, a kid from Menudo too! 😮 This verdict needs to be overturned.
More than one kid from Menudo suffered sexual abuse, but they still remained silent
The emotion they both display does not appear faked at all. These poor men... I'm a SA survivor myself and I couldn't fathom it coming from one of the people you're supposed to trust most.
I can't believe that parents would treat their children as the Menendez, mother and father would treat their children in the manner in which treated, if the parents really and truly loves their children. I believe Lyle and Eric told the truth about the abuse they endured.
Honestly, I believed them.
I did too.
💯. Thought it was a miscarriage of Justice at the time. Wish them the best.
@@GeneralLeia I agree. I think if it were to go to trial today, the outcome would be very different.
i was very young when i remember this in the news.
I watched the whole 2 trials and i fell im my heart it wasnt about the money. Thats what everyone was saying when i was young. People need to see all not what they see in headlines and not seeing the whole picture
These boys were never protected by society and the police.
They had to take the law into their own hands
They served their time set them free
no they didn't i'm sorry way more kids go through worse sexual abuse and don't kill their parents and go on the worlds biggest shopping spree like nothings wrong
If it's true, why did this dude not come up earlier
YES !
The only problem is, they killed their mother too.
Yes, a Mother who sat back and let the abuse go on for years, and years, and did absolutely nothing! She was as guilty as he was.
She was an alcoholc? Right
They need to bring this new evidence to judge..
