My headcanon is the Shivans just decided to all suicide when they blew up the Capella star. Probably due to boredom; "Man, these other species ain't got nothin'. The Shivans had won, but said "Nah, this isn't even worth it" and blew themselves up ;)
Freespace / Freespace 2 truly were my favorite Space Sims of the era. Plenty of contenders, but flying a fighter or bomber between those cap ships as they exchanged beams was pulse-pounding.

I still love this game to this day, its story was great (and all the comm's and such), and it was one of the most immersive games ever (music, color's, sound) all great.
I'll never forget watching the Colossus go down. I paused the game and sat there for a few minutes wondering "What the hell do we do now?". Such a mysterious ending. I wish we could get even a short story explaining what the Shivans were up to.
One of the devs gave us a little bit of info. The third game would be about the GTVA striking back, and as for Bosch, it didn't end well for him. He could communicate with the Shivans in the sense that he could say "words" they could understand, but he had no idea what those words were. He might have told them that he was delicious. In any event, they mostly likely killed him after examining him and his command crew, and by "examining", I mean "vivisecting."
Some people’s childhood was Mario, Sonic, or Pac-Man. Mine was Alpha 1 Also, thanks for releasing this in my B-day. It was the first video I watched today! ❤❤
16:18 What makes it worse, is that the Lucifer was discovered to have been a _PROTOTYPE_ for the Sathanas. Yep, turns out the Sathanas was a _Mass Production_ version of the Lucifer, and much more Streamlined by comparison.
YES. FREESPACE omg I played so much with this. Freespace 2 was the first when I was really young. When I found out about the first whoowee. Hard Light really did a good job with them, not to mention the other fan campaigns. I still have Knossos installed.
I like to think the GTA doctrine changed after seeing how much fighter and bomber support affected the outcome of battles against the shivans in the great war, so instead of designing the new destroyer to take on enemy capitals head on, designed the destroyer to carry fighters while the new corvettes act as the anvil to the bomber's hammer. People shit-talk the colossus, but without it's armour and all-around beam coverage, the alliance would have had to brute force NTF blockades with great sacrifices, the Colossus single handedly broke NTF chokeholds and ended the rebellion. The shivans proved to be a threat on a scale the GTVA could not predict or prepare for, I doubt if the resources put into the Colossus going into more standard destroyers would have made any difference. Then again I'm not a massive lore guy, I could be wrong
I think it would totally make sense that the Terrans started looking closer at the full potential of strikecraft after the final battle with the Lucifer. Remember, Command originally wanted to send in the Bastion to duke it out with the Lucifer but they couldn't catch up in time, so the fighters and bombers were sent chasing after her in high-stakes hail mary attack.

They can be hard to search if not properly access, and same goes for the FreeSpace Bible lore stuff. 2:25: In short, by pitting one of each vessel against each other in mission editors. 2:45, 11:53, and 14:07: Surprisingly, not even the Star Wars Super Star Destroyers had this much craft in their hangars at most. 3:01: Not what Aku would have wanted. 3:15: "Wolfgang! As an aside, let's face it, we're also watching this vid for the awesome remixed FreeSpace OST from Dan Wentz blaring in the background. 4:23: Sometimes, the word is pronounced "Ga-la-teh-ya". See Justice League Unlimited for that, I guess. 6:49: Did you just name a refitted Orion after a Married... With Children character? Darn, no lore expansion on Silent Threat, particularly the Reborn version. The Galactic Terran Intelligence Orion-classe, whicb consist of Command's Legion (lost on Deneb and is actually the same one in the FS2 intro cutscene), Special Operations' Krios (the main flagship of that game's Alpha 1, heavily implied to be a young and more optimistic Aken Bosch; she'll be lost after GTI went rogue and bombed her to bits), Intelligence's Soyakaze (again, awesome shout-out to The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, though that show's ship is named Soyokaze; she also became the replacement flagship for Alpha 1 after Krios bit the dust), and Research & Development's Repulse (implied to be the very same NTD vessel in FS2) are also worth noting. 8:27: Brave decision there, Mac. As an aside, it gets tiresome calling a certain DC Comics ragtag group "Task Force X" all the time. I think Admiral Koth's defiance actually gets a shout-out in Blue Planet's "Delenda Est" mission. (reads the 11:07 timestamp description) And also The Owl House... hmm, you know, "Luz", "Amity", and "Willow" may end up fitting names for the newer Orion-class refit types... you know what, kriff it. Naming more of them "Onpu", "Tomoyo", "Himeno", "Kraehe", "Homura", "Azusa", "Fern", and some other witch names is free rein!!! 12:34: Not how many people would pronounce the word. Still, a ship commanded by an admiral voiced by Robert Loggia is awesome enough. 13:10: Oh, yeah, forgot to mention the fact that the Bastion ended up replacing the Galatea as FS1's Alpha 1's flagship. 14:43: Brings back some memories of Hero 108. 14:54: Hmm, curious. Please explain? 17:42: (shrugs on plurals) That's the problem with the overhyped GTVA Colossus. She was made to fight another Great War, another Hades Rebellion, another Operation Templar, or maybe even another Terran-Vasudan War... *the Second Great War was anything but.* 19:55: And FS2's Alpha 1 may or may not have stayed behind, by the way.
much as I love 'Orion', there is another destroyer from the 'Blue Planet' fan made mod, the Erebus class: developed in the aftermath of the Second Shivan War, that ship's so heavily armed it's...well it probably deserves it's own video, given it's stated purpose was to tangle with a fleet of Shivan Sathanas Dreadnaughts and win.
@@MacsLore Badass indeed! The Erebus looks like a sword blade--and another mod creator used the model in a couple of his campaigns. You do not want to be in front of it or along side of it. I can't play them, but I enjoy watching more capable people doing their play thrus on UA-cam.
one interesting note is how the gtva reversed the capital beam weaponry but not the capital shield tech. I wonder if that has to do with all the shield generators on the lucifer being blown up in the final mission of fs1
I'm not sure how ANY wreckage was recovered. My understanding was the jump node to Sol was collapsed to kill the Lucifer... so, how did they recover anything when they can't get to Sol? I imagine the tech used in Colossus was from other, lesser ships and that's probably why it's power generation and weapons were still sub-par to the larger Shivan tech in the second war. They were good enough if massed in large numbers, but still taxed to their very limit.
There was a theory about that I think I saw on the HLP discord or the forums that I kinda liked about that. Going off memory here but, they could totally do it, but it was so utterly cost and energy-prohibitive that they just scrapped the idea. Which would also explain why the reactors are outside on the Lucifer.
Surprised for little information for GTD Bastion in this vid. One can argue she's the greatest hero ship in the video game media so I was perplexed at the lack of detailed information for her. For another video?
@ ha ha. Sounds great. And don’t worry, a little madness goes well with some navel captains, 😉 we all know a few from movies, games and shows. And it’s alright if we wait a while, every time you do a lore video on FreeSpace, it brightens my day.
Given how well received this Destroyer/Colossus video has gone. It seems like I should. I thought about adding them to this video, but when I realized this was already 20 minutes long, I decided against it. And given how long production took, I'm glad I did.
I wonder, are you interested in doing anything related to any mods? (Other then ST:R) I assume no, but hey are visual shorts (in the style of of the Herc vid) on the table? Fine if not!
If i was allowed to do it, i would marry an Orion Class. I don't care if the ship isn't allowed in a colonized, civilian system because people will shat their collective pants.
If only volition cared about freespace as you do, we'd have freespace 3 by now.... But they just had to do that stupid saint row remake that made them close down😢
I don't understand the ambiguation of this game in how it classify ships. like destroyer being the largest.. when on earth where presumably these terms originate on earth they would refer to the smallest of ships in the fleet.
@@charlesballiet7074 Both Star Wars and Babylon 5 used the term destroyers, to represent the ships with the biggest fire power of the fleets. I guess rule of cool for names is why it started to be used in sci-fis.
I loved the Volition when they made Freespace, Freespace 2 and the Red Faction games. But I couldn't get into Saint's Row. I would have been happy about a modern remake of the Freespace games or continuation of the series. Instead they killed themselves by remaking the same game over and over and then self deleted with a live service sh.. show.

(reads description) Big women alienated us from Homeworld 3 though.
1:04: And then the Shivans, plus tech advancements, changed things.
1:39: Good one.
2:14: Good to see that behind the scenes footage here.
I killed him!!!"
3:30: Ooh, Silent Threat: Reborn cutscene reference?
17:42: (shrugs on plurals)
That's the problem with the overhyped GTVA Colossus. She was made to fight another Great War, another Hades Rebellion, another Operation Templar, or maybe even another Terran-Vasudan War... *the Second Great War was anything but.*
19:55: And FS2's Alpha 1 may or may not have stayed behind, by the way.
much as I love 'Orion', there is another destroyer from the 'Blue Planet' fan made mod, the Erebus class: developed in the aftermath of the Second Shivan War, that ship's so heavily armed it's...well it probably deserves it's own video, given it's stated purpose was to tangle with a fleet of Shivan Sathanas Dreadnaughts and win.
They had some real bad-ass designs for the GTVA Capships. It's been a long time since I played BP though.
GTD Ron Swanson, hilarious.
Iceni class frigate gang rise up
Surprised for little information for GTD Bastion in this vid. One can argue she's the greatest hero ship in the video game media so I was perplexed at the lack of detailed information for her. For another video?

Can you cover the rest of the space ships from this video game series? 😁
Sure, why the hell not. No idea when any of that will come to fruition though. Working on this video might've driven me a little nuts.
@ ha ha. Sounds great. And don’t worry, a little madness goes well with some navel captains, 😉 we all know a few from movies, games and shows. And it’s alright if we wait a while, every time you do a lore video on FreeSpace, it brightens my day.
Will you do a vid on the Cruisers and corvettes of the GTVA?
Given how well received this Destroyer/Colossus video has gone. It seems like I should. I thought about adding them to this video, but when I realized this was already 20 minutes long, I decided against it. And given how long production took, I'm glad I did.
I wonder, are you interested in doing anything related to any mods? (Other then ST:R) I assume no, but hey are visual shorts (in the style of of the Herc vid) on the table? Fine if not!
GTVA Victoria!!!
If i was allowed to do it, i would marry an Orion Class. I don't care if the ship isn't allowed in a colonized, civilian system because people will shat their collective pants.
GTD Al Bundy? 3 Touchdowns in one Spacefight?
4 Shivan Capship kills in one battle, of course.
The Hecate was so ugly.
The Colossus was disabled in its final battle. It couldn't retreat if it wanted to.
@@Gibson7Clans interesting theory personally I like the HW2 naming schemes. because who doesn't like the word battlecruiser?
@@charlesballiet7074 true. 😁
I loved the Volition when they made Freespace, Freespace 2 and the Red Faction games. But I couldn't get into Saint's Row. I would have been happy about a modern remake of the Freespace games or continuation of the series. Instead they killed themselves by remaking the same game over and over and then self deleted with a live service sh.. show.
For me, I'd rather replay only Saints Row 2, but since that game hasn't gotten that promised PC port rerelease yet...
Anyways, you ever tried Summoner?
Im so sick of everyone calling every ship a 'destroyer' thanks to Star Wars. There are reasons that ships have the classes they do.
