It’s not ideal but it is really affordable. If possible move your press higher up on the wall and give it a longer handle to give you more leverage. Also attaching a chain to the press handle and a pulley to the ceiling you could make it so instead of lifting you just pull down using your body weight.
I was gonna say a 3-to-1 (or more) MA rope pulley system. will take up less space than extending the lever, and yeah it can be arranged so that the force needed is downward (so gravity could do the work).
Very cool and impressive; glad I stumbled onto this. A little winch is exactly what I was thinking while I was watching. Attach a D ring to the floor, another ring on the handle, another to the ceiling. Use a little winch and cable to bring the handle down, then move the winch and attach the hook to the ceiling to pull it up. That would be the easiest way. You risk bending your equipment if it's not quite right, you would have to make sure everything was cool before you implement it. A threaded screw would work too except you'd have to redesign a lot. This is great man. I'm sure there was a ton of hard work just to get to the point you are showing. I would love a video going over how you got the mold cut for the disc, and what disc you went with for your first mold, how does it fly, how consistent are your runs, etc. I love to see people doing stuff like this. great job.
Hey panda. Welder fitter mechanic hear of 20 years or so. The cheapest solution to your pull and push needs to me is a chain fall small. You can use them in both pulling and pushing or up and down. You'll need a small rig to hook it up to, I would go for 1/4 inch tube steel 1.5* 1.5 inch or angle iron, angle is cheeper. Use straps rated for the right weight for the chain fall and get an engineer to give you the best angles for the chain fall to sit at. Over rate your concrete anker's safety first. A low gear ratio will pull less chain a high gear will pull more chain. The engineer should make it mechanicaly sound as it should not pull itself apart. Find three or four students to draft it for you, cheapest rout. One more thing pulling down is tuff you'll need to drape the chain over something and work it right, a come along is the next best option to my knowledge. Take it ez.

If your going this direction I would recommend four items: a very short come-along with a lateral pully system to a floor anchor for the push down and a 2m cheater bar for the pull up of the plunger.

If you open a shop, you HAVE to take heavy consideration of the fumes. There isn’t a lot and you should be able to have a vacuum system going to a air scrubber but very critical that you have this and it is working 24/7
Very cool, I would think that you could put a sturup of sorts on the end of the plunger handle this is just short of the floor when you are fully pressed in. Then when you start to inject you could step up on the sturup to complete the injection. For lifting the plunger up, perhaps on the top of the sturup a heavy duty 'O' ring where you could attach a wench of some sort, electric on manual. Very cool.

Food for thought. Depending on how much force it takes to plunge the plastic into the mold I would look into an electric hydraulic pump that way it’s not to hard on you pushing and pulling the plunger in and out and you could hook one pump up to two molds so two at once. Just a thought for you. The discs are looking good keep up the good work. Can’t Waite to get my hands on one or more.
I like that you stamp the plastic it’s made of. I’ve been in injection molding for 15 years, and I always wonder what blend of resins they use. I’ve also got a few ideas for truly experimental molds, that have no real purpose other than to answer “what if”

Love what you are doing to grow the sport. A couple of things I did not see in this process are whether you torque the nuts down on your mold. I know from working on engines that torquing heads is a very precise process that is done in a specific order to maintain consistent pressure. I also wonder why you don’t heat the mold at least some to make the flow into the mold a bit easier. Keep up the great idea you have. ⛵️
Great video man, you really did well. As far as your press is concerned, the cheapest way to do it in my opinion is to rig up a threaded rod, something like allthread to a drill motor. It would work for both the press and resetting of the press, just reverse the drill motor and "unscrew" it. Basically just like an apple press.

To make the pressing easier without getting any expensive parts or machines you can make the bar longer for more leverage and you can attach weights so you don’t have to put as much force in it yourself. And to make it easy to pull the plunger back out you can attach a simple pulley or block and tackle to the ceiling and pull it back up that way
You could use a double acting pneumatic cylinder to push and pull. It could run off of a fairly inexpensive compressor. You could also turn the injection tube upside down and use a fast pump floor jack to inject and your weight to pull it back out.
Too many comments to check, but there may be a way to fit the ram of a electric log splitter to a press. Ditch the base and bolt it upright so you can use your gravity feed at the start. Another simple mod you can make right away is to add a locking hook to your press so it locks in at the bottom so you don't have to hang off it. Great machine so far, you got a new sub and I want to see what you do from here!

The machine built in the video you linked looks very similar to the setup you have, and they were able to build it with even fewer modifications than I originally thought too. Something mentioned in the video you linked was the higher probability of violent failures in the chance that something is loose or in chance of failure. Methods I have seen used for controlling these risks are blast shields and having a remote control start and emergency shutoff in case of a failure (you can probably get away with a couple push buttons from your local electronics supply and wire them to your motor control) and check this video out for blast shield ideas (ua-cam.com/video/tiDJVd6_fqg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TylerBell). You can make something smaller to just cover the injection system if you want. You know what they say, "S*** happens". Make sure s*** doesn't happen to you!

If you want to set up a multiple setups you would do well with an air system with a central compressor and air cylinders, would be claener than a hydraulic system. Less expensive alternative could be a bottle jack system with a chain fall as a reset

I love what you’re doing! I would absolutely recommend a winch. A very inexpensive one from harbor freight can be easily modified with a pulley on the ground for the down swing and a simple shackle on the top of the lever/handle for the retrieve. I’m a general contractor in Charleston SC and build industrial furniture on the side. In addition to being an avid disc golfer, This would take a little bit of work but I can assure you that it’s definitely doable!!

Loveland and Estes Park. One thought. Levers are life savers. In the Army, we used long pipes as "breaker bars" on wrenches to fix tanks. Have you tried adding an extender on the lever so you are not working so hard? You can make it so it is removable so you can take it off and go through the full range of motion to the ground. Of course, it also looks like a good workout. So, if that is the point ignore me. lol

Best of luck getting a better set up for more production. maybe get a inexpensive Harbor freight bumper winch, bolted in the floor and set up a pully above for the up pull. Look forward to getting one of these one of a kind discs. They look great! I want you to sign mine also : )

I worked at Innova for 6 years. Their injection molders are top notch. A disc every 60 seconds...we used to recycle all the miss molds, cold shots and double shots.
You could take a look at using a wheel instead of a lever for your injection method. Take a look at old school injection molding machines, in my experience, most have a large diameter wheel that you turn in order to inject the plastic and apply hold pressure. You could also add machined cooling lines into the A and B half of your mold, it will drastically cut down on your cool time.
I would say some type of jack screw with an electric motor for pressing the plunger and removing. Could be run just by 2 switches. 1 switch for up and 1 for down. Would be pretty straight forward and easy to make work.
Since your melting time seems to be the longest part of the process, have you considered making a modular melting system? If you made a "tube holder" that held your melt tube and plunger, you could have a second unit of plastic heating at the same time (or 12min offset). Also, for a DIY/cheap solution to upgrading your pull arm, consider a vehicle trailer jack screw. Cabela's sells a 2,500lb one for $70. you might even be able to turn it with an impact wrench...
I love this idea. I would definitely buy some, especially putters. I love the idea of being able to just throw a super beat up one into a shredder and have it be the majority of a new one being made.
One thing you could try doing for injecting the plastic and pulling the plunger back up could just some systems of pulleys. One set attached below and one on the ceiling. For every you loop you have you decrease the amount you need to put in.

You also need to make friends with a welder, pay him in beer and I'm sure you can get that thing welded down to something other than your wall :)

I love what you’re doing! I would absolutely recommend a winch. A very inexpensive one from harbor freight can be easily modified with a pulley on the ground for the down swing and a simple shackle on the top of the lever/handle for the retrieve. I’m a general contractor in Charleston SC and build industrial furniture on the side. In addition to being an avid disc golfer, This would take a little bit of work but I can assure you that it’s definitely doable!!

Great videos and awesome cause. Plastics make the world go round and disc golf a thing...but they suck! Thanks for helping offset some harm to the planet. Grew up in Colorado myself. Loveland and Estes Park. One thought. Levers are life savers. In the Army, we used long pipes as "breaker bars" on wrenches to fix tanks. Have you tried adding an extender on the lever so you are not working so hard? You can make it so it is removable so you can take it off and go through the full range of motion to the ground. Of course, it also looks like a good workout. So, if that is the point ignore me. lol
Cool video man, I haven't been out to a course in so long. My old DG buddy passed away a few years ago and just haven't had it in me to get out. Been getting the itch to go here lately, need to dust off the bag and get out.

Best of luck getting a better set up for more production. maybe get a inexpensive Harbor freight bumper winch, bolted in the floor and set up a pully above for the up pull. Look forward to getting one of these one of a kind discs. They look great! I want you to sign mine also : )

If you have just some metal tubing you can put it in the handle to increase the length and make it easier to push/pull
I worked at Innova for 6 years. Their injection molders are top notch. A disc every 60 seconds...we used to recycle all the miss molds, cold shots and double shots.
You could take a look at using a wheel instead of a lever for your injection method. Take a look at old school injection molding machines, in my experience, most have a large diameter wheel that you turn in order to inject the plastic and apply hold pressure. You could also add machined cooling lines into the A and B half of your mold, it will drastically cut down on your cool time.
I would say some type of jack screw with an electric motor for pressing the plunger and removing. Could be run just by 2 switches. 1 switch for up and 1 for down. Would be pretty straight forward and easy to make work.
Ceiling mounted winch, run a nice thick chain to the handle, and you'd be good to go for extracting the plunger I'd think...
The stamping is such an awesome touch. I can't wait to buy a disc ASAP.
Since your melting time seems to be the longest part of the process, have you considered making a modular melting system? If you made a "tube holder" that held your melt tube and plunger, you could have a second unit of plastic heating at the same time (or 12min offset). Also, for a DIY/cheap solution to upgrading your pull arm, consider a vehicle trailer jack screw. Cabela's sells a 2,500lb one for $70. you might even be able to turn it with an impact wrench...
I love this idea. I would definitely buy some, especially putters. I love the idea of being able to just throw a super beat up one into a shredder and have it be the majority of a new one being made.
One thing you could try doing for injecting the plastic and pulling the plunger back up could just some systems of pulleys. One set attached below and one on the ceiling. For every you loop you have you decrease the amount you need to put in.
Believe it or not, I've seen the exact thing you're mentioning done before!
You need a double pulley system in there to help yourself get some leverage!
I'll second this. It's the cheapest/simplest way to get some extra mechanical power.
